There exists a forgotten breed of children in the urban undergrounds of New York City. They are shape shifters, shadow walkers, guardians, shamans, and medicine people. They call themselves the forgotten ones or “tribes.” They are the heralds of an ancient gene pool, but they haven’t been forgotten. Something is hunting them.
It’s Mara Pearson’s sixteenth birthday. Her mother is missing and she’s discovered that she’s a shape shifter. During her search she discovers the recent teenage abductions in the neighborhood may have a dark connection with her mother’s disappearance. Desperate to find answers, she joins the 11207 tribe, a group of magical misfits who agree to help her. When the tribe’s leader is struck down by a hidden enemy, Mara is forced to take over. Mara will have to rescue a tribe member, find her mother, and stop a mystical menace in her neighborhood. Dirty cops, angry drug lords, and rival tribes will be child’s play by comparison. Mara will soon discover that keeping one’s promises isn’t as easy as she thought.
I believe fiction has the power to change the world.
Once upon a time i was a child who lived in the truancy office. It was a book that kept my attention when school couldn't. The ideas and concepts in stories expanded my thinking and exposed me to new ways to live and grow.
Why do I write? I write to give a voice to the voiceless. I write because it's the quickest way to infect a country with your ideas and viewpoints. I write because I have a need to share what I dream about and what weighs on my mind in the middle of the night.
I write so that someone out there won't feel so alone.
Mara was a normal girl who is a bit of a loner. The hottest guy at school doesn't know her and she doesn't have many friends. Yet she has always had her mother by her side and she knew that no matter what, she'd always have her mother with her. Until her mother disappeared. And she didn't run-away-disappear. She literally disappeared, leaving absolutely no memory of her even existing in everyone's minds, except for Mara. Mara must learn why her mother disappeared and how she can get back, but there's much more going on. It turns out Mara is a shape shifter and must help the 11207 tribe which will help her find her mother, yet there are many people who want Mara stopped before she finds out the truth.
This book sounded really good. As in, I honestly couldn't wait to read it and learn about Mara's powers and the tribes. The book didn't turn out like I hoped. It was confusing and there were so many characters it was hard to keep track of them all. Some characters were mentioned once and then I immediately forgot about them. If some characters that didn't do anything except cause confusion were taken it, the book would have made more sense.
The plot was kinda confusing too. It took a lot of twists and turns and there were a ton of sub-plots. If the book kept a clear focus and didn't focus too much on other things, I would have enjoyed the book more.
I did like all the different powers of the people in the tribes and the concept of the tribes and the Keepers were really interesting. I would have loved to learn more about them, but there wasn't much of an explanation. Some things weren't elaborated and some things didn't seem to have much of a point, almost as if they were filler. I'm sure in the sequel, things will make a lot more sense.
The plot was original and entertaining except for including some seemingly pointless details. If some things were elaborated on more, I definitely would have enjoyed this book more. I do want to read the sequel and find out more about what happens to Mara.
Mara has just turned sixteen and her mother has disappeared. As she hunts for her she realizes her life is about to change. She is one of the Forgotten ones or Tribes as they call themselves. Children who have powers, are shifters, shadow walkers and more. Mara is a shifter and as she hunts for her mother she never really knows who to trust. Kids have been disappearing and it all may be tied in with her mother disappearing. She has to face drug lords, rival tribes, dirty cops and more. The tribe she joins is a mixture of kids and the leader gets took down. It seems Mara is a special forgotten one and everyone wants her for different reasons. She has to try and save her mother, stop the bad guys and figure out what she wants.
have read many books with all types of different characters and this one is an enjoyable one. t is a little different from the others I read and I love the plot. Mara is no way prepared for what is thrust on her and while I will say one or two times she got on my nerves I still liked her. She has to figure things out and is never sure who to trust. Her enemies could be her friends and her friends her enemies. She is young so I will give her a little break about going boy crazy at times even when I would think her mind should be on other things. I do like when she steps up and does what is right and enjoyed the action scenes. The plot is a good one and I hope to see the other tribes and what goes on with them. If I would change anything in this it would be to give info on just a few characters. At times it seemed there was to many but as this is the first book the author has to lay down the background. I will be reading the next one for sure.
(I received a free copy of this book from Aspendawn Books, through NetGalley, in exchange for a review).
(This review may contain spoilers).
I have a few mixed feelings about this book. Ideally, I would have given this 3.5 stars. It's not quite at four stars, I'm afraid.
The blurb of this book sounded really good and interesting, but I couldn't quite get into this book as easily as some of the other books. I liked the different powers, but I didn't think there was nearly enough information about it.
I was a bit disappointed in Mara's interactions with the guys. She kind of seemed to lose her mind when she was around a good-looking guy. I did think that a lot of the other characters weren't as well-developed. I kept getting confused with some of them.
Some of the interactions between the different characters were really interesting and I did like the whole Keeper-thing. I just... had no idea what the point was. It seemed really cruel to just abandon the children - and also a bit silly.
I think I would have liked to see a bit more explanation about everything. The amount of characters and their motivations were still confusing. I think they could have been combined into a fewer amount of characters.
I would be interested in seeing what will happen to the characters in this book in the future. This was an entertaining read, even though there were quite a few errors in the book as well. I think there could have been a bit more proof-reading.
Mara's mom disappears one day, and I mean really disappears. No authority figures seem to really care and a series of increasingly bizarre encounters ensues. Apparently the Poles have realigned and now people have powers. People are introduced and forgotten immediately. She gets attacked a LOT. Eventually she joins up with a tribe of misfits (hence the name) who say they'll help her.
Honestly, I felt that there was a lot of potential plot-wise here, but the execution was pretty poor. I found it honestly a little hard to follow. I think if a few plot-lines/characters had been dropped, it would have been a lot more cohesive. It was just too much for a first book. Also, Mara's reactions to a lot of things were really odd. There was a lot of telling vs. showing. I never really felt her grief about her mother disappearing.
There's still potential here, but it definitely needs a of fine tuning.
When I first read the the blurb it immediately got my attention. The plot was original and full of potential but unfortunately the book didn’t live up to the expectations. Mara wasn’t a bad written characters but I would have love to connect more with her, she’s going thought so many things but we barely catch a glimpse of her feelings thought the book. I I also felt like a lot of the other characters weren't really well developed and they were so many the I kept getting confused with some of them, I think the author should have put less characters and give them more consistance.
Still with some polishing the story could be great and I’m definitely looking forward to read the next book in the serie.
