The Graveyard Club: Revenge Game

Rate this book
Definitive horror master R.L. Stine introduces a new cast of devilish teens in a brand new graphic novella!

Parker West is a senior at Grave’s End High, in the sleepy town of Grave’s End, a town surrounded by cemeteries. A place where swarms of bats fill the sky every night, and kids play hide-and-seek amongst tombstones. But none of that feels odd to the locals-- Grave’s End is as sleepy and dead as they come. A lonely hill on the edge of the town in the graveyard becomes the local hangout spot for Parker and his group of friends. They goof off, plan schemes, and form a secret club… the Graveyard Club. Members have to be daring and unafraid to wreak a relatively harmless amount of havoc in the name of fun. But one night, after getting into an argument with a local cop, the kids find themselves in a prank war. But what starts off as mostly harmless practical jokes and tricks escalates into attacks that might put these kids in real, life-threatening danger if they won’t back down first… and Parker’s never been one to give up without a fight. Beloved author R.L. Stine (Goosebumps, Fear Street, Stuff of Nightmares), who put a nostalgic sense of dread in our hearts as children, returns with a brand new original graphic novella–a coming of age horror story for generations new and old.

Graves End is a so-called boring town surrounded by cemeteries. Parker West is a senior at Grave’s End High School. Swarms of bats fill the sky every night, but that doesn’t stop Parker and his friends from hanging out on a hill on the edge of the town in a graveyard. They plan schemes and form a secret club. After getting into an argument with a local police officer and being bullied by his son, practical jokes soon turn into dangerous attacks. Later in this graphic novel, the horror part comes into play.

The characters had depth, but I didn’t connect with the main character. Arson and scorpions are not a prank. The reveal for the person responsible for the acts happening to Parker was overly obvious. The story does eventually get to the horror part which I thought was better than the dangerous attacks earlier in the book. The ending has a thread for a follow-up book, but the main part of the story was resolved. On the plus side, I thought the illustrations by Carola Borelli were excellent.

Overall, this has an okay plot, but few surprise twists. It’s a quick read with great atmospheric illustrations. I was obviously not the target audience for this book.

BOOM!Box and R.L. Stine provided a complimentary digital copy of this novel via Booktrovert. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own. The publication date was September 17, 2024.

Bad.

This story is bonkers. The pranks START at breaking bones and arson and only escalate from there!!! Why does no one take these antics seriously?! Students breaking bones?! A live animal left in someone’s locker??? FUCKING SCORPIONS?!?! The corpse was one too far. The way they just moved it out of the car? Is there truly NO ONE else on the police to handle any of this????

Also how can you be friends for life if you literally don’t even fucking know HER DAD WAS WITH YOURS AND THEY DISAPPEARED TOGETHER?!? WTF PARKER?!?

There was no plot beyond prank war because cop and cop son are shitty people. Like why is this happening? Where is Parker’s mom?? There is no basis for friendship. Backstory is crammed into the dialogue but it never adds anything! It left me with no answers and more questions. Why does cop hate Parker’s family??? How do these kids know each other? Why did Parker used to ignore Patti?

ps. I loved that Patti and Rhonda only existed as sexy lamps to further Parker’s story! Love my graphic novels with a healthy dose of toxic misogyny.

"is it possible to die of boredom"

apparently not or I would be long gone after this one. The most unrealistic characters (although their designs were really cool), the most outlandish "antics", and the plot was nothing short of pointless. This whole book felt like a really really bad CreepyPasta made by a 12-yr old that has no idea how teens or adults actually act

I’m on my phone so this will be a quicker one. I guess Stine is done with Stuff of Nightmares as he's moving on to YA comics with these. More are planned as this is actually an ongoing story with the same cast. Whoa, he's evolving.

This is set in Graves End, as a bores group of misfits hangs in the Graveyard and deals with being outcasts. The local bully and his cop dad especially hate Parker and this turns into a crazy prank war.

I enjoyed this. And that's mostly because it feels like classic Stine YA. It has some intensity, beer and some mature things but not a lot for gore and kills. It's like classic fear street where the YA Ness comes from them being teens and the threat of dark stuff.

No swearing but little romance either which is good. It's more about the pranks than horror which can be annoying but i like how far it went. This bully is an insane hater and his Dad is classic Stine ACAB stuff.

Characters are fine if underused or unhinged in places. This is a part 1 as we get backgrounds about the mysteries in town. Like how Parker's father vanished which gives us some mild emotion.

There's a villain reveal and the motive is classic but out of nowhere and weak. I both love and dislike it at tge same time. Climax is sudden but I like the cliffhanger.

Artwork is good but solid angular designs and colors that sell some intense moments. It's an odd one that has some old Stine tricks but feels classic in a way that made it enjoyable.

The next one will likely fill gaps to make this complete but it feels undercooked right now. Still, it's fun if you're into classic Fear Street. It's evolved a bit but not a lot and here it works okay.

So yeah, it's fun enough. Interested in the next.

Next read will be the next Halloween one, see ya then.

We follow our protagonist Parker and his friends in small town America as they embark on a back and forth prank war with a local bully and his father who happens to be the Sheriff. This felt very much like an extremely condensed Fear Street book, There was some real stakes which was welcome and while it was a fun quick read, it lacked any real substance or intrigue and the "reveal" was quite obvious. I did think the artwork was pretty good though.

Being a huge R.L. Stine fan, I was really hype for this one. While the first issue has its moments, it doesn't quite reach the heights of classic horror comics. The pacing feels a bit off, and the April 2025 wait for issue #2 isn't helping its case.

The artwork was well done, but I felt the coloring wasn't. Everything felt dull with the exceptions of panels that were completely red.

The story itself was okay, with great horror elements. However, the characters didn't feel developed. I felt characters - examples being Ray-Ray and Billy-Roy - were very stereotyped and just thrown in to add extra tension.

My biggest issue was that I wasn't surprised by the big reveal of who was responsible for all the crap happening to Parker.

There were also a few other issues. When the true culprit is revealed, I understood his basic motivation, but I don't think it was thought out enough - at least for me. There is also a scene during the final fight where the culprit is hovering over Parker with a knife, but in the next panel they're standing across from each other. That inconsistency was confusing and annoying.

I do like the cliffhanger ending though. It provides a bigger mystery for the gang to investigate in the next issue.

The Graveyard Club: Revenge Game #1 is a Boom Studios oversized comic written by R.L. Stine, illustrated by Carola Borelli, and colors by Francesco Segala.

The sleepy town of Graves End is surrounded by graveyards with very little else to do. A group of social outcasts spend most of their free time hanging out in the cemeteries and are dubbed The Graveyard Club. When one of the town cops starts harassing club, and issues escalate at school by the cop’s son, all parties involved start a game of revenge that begins to escalate to a point of no return.

With this book being oversized and the next issue not slated until April of 2025, this feels more like a series of graphic novels aimed at a teenage audience. I think readers of Goosebumps and Fear Street will find some nostalgia here on Stine’s style of writing because it has not evolved from the 1990s. The dialogue is pretty hokey with the adults in particular coming off as cringey “Haw haw.” The main story is wrapped up tidy by the end of the issue, but future story points are touched upon for further issues including a somewhat cliff hanger. The art is decent through the book with a few scenes that stand out as impressive.

I think I will continue to read the series as I was such a fan of Goosebumps and Stine as a kid, but this is definitely not a must read book.

R.L. Stine's name brings up massive nostalgia for anyone who grew up reading Goosebumps, seriously, the Mask one is legendary! So, coming into The Graveyard Club by Stine and Carola Borelli, you have a high expectation for a fun, spooky time. Unfortunately, this one is sadly pretty bad overall. The problems start right away with the writing; the dialogue is really bad, often feeling unnatural or just clumsy. Compounding that, the characters make frustrating choices because their motivations are bad and confusing, making it really hard to root for anyone or care about the outcome of the plot. Which is a damn shame.

The narrative structure doesn't help either, as the plot is way too jumpy and the pacing is all over the place. It's hard to follow the story's flow, and by the end, I was totally lost on who this book was even for or what age group this is written for. The art is okay but uninspiring, it gets the job done but doesn't add any flair or atmosphere to distract from the story issues. Ultimately, despite the creator's legacy, this title completely misses the mark. It's an unfortunately rough read, earning a low 1.5 out of 5.

"We’re not breaking any laws— Your face is breaking the ugly law."

RL Stine dabbles in the bizarre world of graphic novels and it almost pays off.

This started off really good. The storyline was interesting, the high school drama was very believable and fun, the mystery was crazy, and the revenge plot was interesting. Then the big reveal happened, wasn’t shocking, and it came to light too quickly.

Even though this wasn’t my favorite, it was still entertaining. I’ll read everything Stine puts out, so I’m ready for volume 2!

eARC from publisher

Stine's comics only work when they're retro, because he's retro. Remember that time Margaret Atwood wrote Angel Catbird and it was such a throwback? This is like that. Everyone tells you obvious things in blunt, unrealistic ways. The pacing's off. The story's clichéd. The captions disappear. Stine isn't a comic writer, and it shows.

He's a sweet man, but someone needs to bring him into the 21st century, or else help him honor his roots. I'd be happy either way.

This graphic novel totally surprised me in the best way. It’s creepy, funny, and nostalgic all at once, like a modern Goosebumps. The story moves fast but still keeps you guessing, and the characters feel real enough to root for. The art style is bold and moody with just the right pop of color, which fits the eerie vibe perfectly. It’s the kind of graphic novel you finish in one sitting and then immediately want to lend to a friend. Five stars from me, I absolutely loved it and look forward to more in the series!

Thank you netgalley for giving me access to this eARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
A group of teens who hangout in a graveyard and get back at the people who bully them until one day while looking for their fathers who disappeared 5 years prior they stumble upon an ancient evil.

This was an okay read, wasn't good, wasn't bad, it just was. A perfect pallete cleanser and to get one step closer to your book goal.
Ngl, the police sheriff was extra childish and so was his son. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Amazingly illustrated and feels true to R.L.’s style.

BUT, without spoilers:

The story overall feels “good” not “great”. There are great concepts but the execution leaves some things to be desired. The big dramatic moments are weakened by the lack of developed dialogue. Which often had me having to re-read certain pages to understand what had happened.

Additionally, there are (too obvious) foreshadowing moments put out there. As if to say, “hey remember me! This is important for later!” But meanwhile, the comic itself is too short and the release date of the next issue is months away for someone to really care about the details. (Which is another concerning thing.)

To summarize I’d say the comic feels rushed at. Which as a longtime fan, is slightly disappointing! But, I’d say this is a great read for a younger teen audience who are looking to bridge the gap into darker horror material.

And as always, boom knocks it out of the park with their presentation of the comic, but if that’s the best part of it. What are we really doing?

I would like to thank Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC.

I was looking for a fun fun and spooky read and this seemed to my alley. This really calls on some horror from my childhood. However I do wish more development was put into the storytelling. The story is very lacking and felt all over the place. We also get some pranks that really get out of hand with no lasting consequences to the overall story. I really wish there was some time spent exploring this, but unfortunately it was just left feeling like there were few things that would impact the story overall. We also don't really get to know the characters. I would have loved to be able to spend more time getting to know them because there is a lot of potential for this book. I will say I enjoyed the art style. For me it felt a bit nostalgic at times. I really enjoyed the art and how the setting was portrayed.

Had seen the local library pick this up and figured I’d give it a look, especially after how much I liked the recent GN adaptation of The Haunted Mask. This seems to be an original concept by Stine and it’s just okay. The characters all feel a bit stiff, the idea of an overarching mystery feels a bit undercooked, and the “twist” involving the antagonist was predictable and not very exciting. The art is fine, but I’m not sure this would click with kids in the way Stine’s older books do. A big reason is the guttering effect — when you have to imagine the horror, it works in more primal levels than if you just show an image of say a rotting corpse in a car. It’s just not as terrifying when it’s less abstracted.

I read the Barnes and Noble exclusive edition. I don’t know what the bonus content was but there’s a side story to the main book, artist drawings and preview of an old Stuff of Nightmares story.

The quality of this book feels very poor, you might be better off with a digital copy.

The story has a Fear Street vibe to it. Group of friends get into a prank war that gets out of hand. The final act kinda comes from nowhere but I guess it makes sense.

There’s a side story involving missing dads and killer bats. The next book is announced for spring and seems to lean into the bat side.

Promising new comic series linked to R. L. Stine ("Goosebumps") following a group of teenagers living in a town surrounded by graveyards and called "Gravesend". Story is quite short but sets the scene for the characters and a potential arching storyline. While setting may sound dark, the tone is lighter while mysterious. The comic may draw inspiration from other known comics but does not feel like a rehash of content. Shame next issue is not until April 2025!!!

If this was a little longer allowing for more detail and depth to the plot, this would have been 4 stars. I liked the setting and the setup but felt like each scene was rushed and stunted. With this graphic novel being so short, readers don't have enough time to really get to know the characters.

But this is a good start to a series and I think teen readers will enjoy it.

Thank you to NetGalley.

Something was off for me on this. It didn’t feel like this was actually Stine’s work, or rather, some of his best work.

The storyline was mediocre. The illustrations weren’t even Stine-worthy.

I would say I’m being very generous by giving this a 3* rating. On second thought…it’s a worthy 2*

I think this has great potential to become a hit amongst teens. The first book has some cool art, but a flat story. I think the overall idea could become the next Riverdale or Sabrina if Stine can produce more of his beloved horror.
