When Scarlet finds herself doomed to eternal punishment in Hell for a sinful life she can’t even remember, Satan himself offers her a deal: return to earth and kill one marked sinner per day…as his GRIM REAPER!
Using the power of Hell, Scarlet quickly learns the ropes of being a reaper: bring in one sinner per day, regardless of their sins, and avoid the ninth circle herself. This work brings her into the path of Chase, a disgraced former detective trying to solve a high-level case that seems wrapped up in Scarlet’s former life. Scarlet decides to partner with Chase to find the answers to her locked memories—as long as Chase doesn’t discover Scarlet’s bloodstained bargain with Satan first.
This volume collects episodes 1–16 of the popular WEBTOON, exclusive never-before-seen content, and a bonus short story!
This was such a strong beginning to the series! I'm totally hooked on the characters and the storyline, and the cliffhanger definitely has me excited for the next one. Great art, too, if a little busy at times (though that may have been the watermark on the arc file). Can't wait for more!
This was a pretty quick read and I'm definitely interested in the premise. I'm not sure how I feel about the pacing yet. It was faster, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it felt like it didn't work completely for the flow of the story/world building. I do plan to read future volumes, so that could change as the story develops.

Wow, what a great little start. A concept that's not super unique, but it's held up by a nice art style, some REALLY good character chemistry, and an intriguing plot filled with mystery.
Who is/was Scarlet? What did she do to get sentenced to the ninth level of hell, where only the worst people end up? What's the deal with Detective Chase and Case X, and the dead woman who looks just like Scarlet? And who the hell are the Red Spades?
Each person that Scarlet sets out to reap is a sinner, but she isn't able to sweep them all under that one blanket label. A mother trying to save her son from suffering in a terrible, misguided attempt of love, a serial killer apathetic towards the terrible world, a woman who loves snails...
This little volume has comedy in spades as well, with Satan being a truly awful little fuckboy type, and Chase's utter nerd identity mixing with his love of his (admittedly rather cute) ugly cat. Scarlet's a no-nonsense type of woman--- but she's in such a sticky situation, teaming up with a detective when she's literally killing sinners once a day, every day.
I really enjoyed some of the "horror" panels in this, I can't wait to see what might develop out of this. Looking forward to a volume 2.

This is the print publishing of a Webtoon series. The art style ranges at times from simple and lacking to striking and stylized action. The story is very interesting, though, and when I finished the volume, I immediately went to Webtoon to pick up where I left off so I could get through the cliffhanger it left me on.
This volume collects the first six chapters of this Webtoon along with additional bonus content. Once again, an striking cover and an interesting concept is often enough for me to check out a new collection of a manga.
First impressions, the use of color, or lack thereof in some places, really raises the level on the artwork (which I can easily envision as an anime series) and story-telling. I like too that the art style shifts a bit when we are given flashbacks on characters. This subtle nuance makes for a varied read.
The story itself, naturally, has a violent angle to it. After all, we are dealing with the work of a grim reaper. The author does infuse the story with a bit of mystery and intrigue revolving around Scarlet and Chase's pasts, which should be explored further in future volumes. The reader is also provided with some moral themes to consider. What constitutes a sin? When are these actions justifiable?
If you're looking for a comic read that is a bit out of the ordinary, this one might be for you.
Pre-release review. i'm the grim reaper has been a particular read and experience that has followed me throughout the years—especially in the love of its fandom. it's more than worthy of a physical book and—if it comes to it eventually—an adaption.
i can't wait to see scarlet again, in her season one glory. i am also dreading to see chase's face again, at least he likely won't have a spherical head here. adios. or whatever.
I read a text post once that went something like, “If I died and went to hell, it’d take me a week to realize I wasn’t at work anymore.”
Wonder how that applies if your job IS actually hell?
Anyway.
Guess that’s for Scarlet here to find out.
After waking up in hell with no memory of how she got there or who she even is, Scarlet is faced with a big choice—face her punishment for being an epic sinner of epics sins she can’t remember committing or work for Satan as a Grim Reaper, reaping souls and taking names. Not really a choice, actually.
Scarlet is tasked with reaping one dinner a day or else face the ninth circle of hell herself. Seems an easy enough task. That is, until she gets herself tangled up with Chase—a disgraced detective following up on a mysterious death case, the victim bearing a striking resemblance to Scarlet herself.
Could working with Chase be the key to unlocking Scarlet’s past?
This type of story is definitely my jam.
I’ve got very few notes. I love a fun, bloody reaper story. Reapers and underworld lore are some of my personal favorite things. I’m always fascinated by a new reimagining of both.
So, I’m looking forward to reading more of this story.
In addition to the mystery and the reaper motifs, this story also has a really edgy and dynamic, aesthetic art style. A lot of how the characters and their powers are designed reminds me of FMA Pride’s monster form meets RWBY.
If any of that appeals to you, I’d definitely recommend picking up this first volume~
Scarlet wakes up in line for assignment to her place in hell. Obviously she realizes that she is dead, but has no recollection of her past life or even her real name. Satan has assigned her to the ninth level, the lowest, home to the truly evil. But she is so special that he offers her an out - act as a Grim Reaper for him, dispatching one sinner a day to hell. Seeing no alternative, Scarlet agrees and is sent back to earth.
As a Grim Reaper she sees a red X marked on those sinners destined to be harvested. But not all sinners are created equal, and Scarlet has some pangs of remorse at some of her victims. And then she meets Chase, a former detective, who is trying to solve Case X, which involves a corpse that looks exactly like Scarlet. Could this be her original body? Is this the path to finding out who she was and what she did to be condemned?
An excellent beginning to an intriguing storyline.
Absolutely delicious chuuni edgelord comic with some real - quite prescient, even - thematic meat to it. Some of the humor doesn't entirely land, and the backgrounds (while brilliantly simple and effective in setting the vibe) are used a little sparingly for my tastes. Still, I generally like the writing, and I really like the character designs, aesthetic, and comic direction. Very strong first volume, this.
I accidentally read the second book before the first. So here I am in order to fix that oopsie!
I’m very much enjoying a proper introduction into the book as now I know why the fight scene between scarlet and the bunny rabbit happens in the second book and how in the world Chase meets Scarlet. I’m looking forward to reading the third book!
Favourite character: Lightstalker, Banisher of the Void

I'm the Grim Reaper, Vol. 1 by Graveweaver is a gripping and visually striking manga that hooks readers from the first page. The premise is as dark as it is intriguing: Scarlet, condemned to Hell for unknown sins, is offered a grim deal by Satan himself. Her mission? To become his reaper on Earth, tasked with taking the lives of one marked sinner each day.
The artwork is spectacular, capturing the eerie and somber atmosphere of Hell and the action-packed sequences on Earth. Graveweaver’s illustrations bring Scarlet’s grim journey to life with haunting detail and dynamic scenes that keep readers engaged.
Scarlet's character is compelling. Her struggle with her lost memories and her drive to avoid eternal damnation make her a relatable and complex protagonist. Her interactions with Chase, a disgraced former detective entangled in her mysterious past, add layers of intrigue and suspense to the narrative. Their partnership, fraught with secrets and potential betrayal, propels the story forward, making it hard to put the book down.
The pacing is well-balanced, blending intense action with moments of introspection. Graveweaver deftly explores themes of redemption, guilt, and the nature of sin without slowing down the story’s momentum. This volume sets up a fascinating world with high stakes, leaving readers eager for the next installment.
While the plot can occasionally feel predictable, the execution and character development more than make up for it. Scarlet's evolution as a reaper and her quest for answers keep the narrative fresh and engaging.
Overall, I'm the Grim Reaper, Vol. 1 is a darkly enchanting start to what promises to be a thrilling series. Fans of supernatural manga with strong female leads and moral complexities will find this first volume an absolute treat.
So this is a Webtoon, huh? Fantastic, another series I can struggle to read online vs. having to wait for the physical release!
I say this keeping in mind that the web comic version hasn't been updated for publication, example:
The physical edition has updated this to be a little more clear:
My main thing is, besides that scrolling comics are much harder for me to read, is the discrepancies shown here. I haven't read any of the Webtoon version beyond checking the first episode to see if there were any big changes, but that bothers me a little, like with Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint for specific scenes or unOrdinary and its... slur... It means the physical copies are the official "final" editions, which is aggravating when I'm out of habit of keeping those around unless I *REALLY LOVE FIVE-STAR A++ ADORE* a series, especially since a lot of how I can justify getting new books is I donate the ones I've finished reading (or even ones I haven't finished reading).
Anyway.
Convoluted set-up where The Worst Sinner* dies and is given the option to become the Grim Reaper, I guess for shits and giggles. As Grim Reaper, "Scarlet" must fulfill a quota to reap [read: KILL] one Sinner—conveniently marked with an X—per day, or be sentenced to oblivion for all eternity. Not sure what happened to prior reapers, or how things were managed if Scarlet is the first? I mean, it's ONLY the first book, after all.
Like... it's fine. It's better than three-star but definitely not five-star. I like the artwork, and I'm interested (so far) in seeing how it pans out. Will I keep it around? Doubtful.
Even though the Lightie bonus comic is adorable. :D
*not Worst of ALL TIME, but one the Devil has been eyeing for a while
Edit to add: I'm retroactively mad about inclusion of the whole Christian Heaven/Hell set-up where every soul is rewarded/punished ETERNALLY for their actions in practically a blink of an eye. Sure, there's no way to tell this specific story otherwise, but I hate it. More than that, I hate that Scarlet's Hell is my Hell, in retrospect—oblivion is basically what I expect, but not a CONSCIOUS one. There are some days where my mind does the equivalent of dividing by zero when I contemplate exactly this (or, more specifically, what if *literally nothing including time and space* existed), and it takes all my effort to shove things into my head along the lines of, "No point thinking about that since things DO exist, regardless of others' best efforts" so my head will normalise and stop torturing me.
I think that's the main reason I deducted a star, the whole Heaven/Hell dichotomy that I just can't abide. Not tagging it "Christian," though, because I don't know that this story or the characters are specifically "Christian" Heaven/Hell even though that's the one that comes to mind first. (Are there others? Sure, they just have other names I don't feel like listing.)
Putting it out there, you're welcome and I'm sorry if I made your brain divide by zero.
A grim-toned dark horror mystery-adventure following a soul condemned to Hell for a sinful life they can't even remember, but offered a deal: return to Earth on condition that they kill one marked sinner per day, as the Devil's Grim Reaper! Scarlet (as she decides to call herself) has no choice but to agree, but as she starts bumping off sinners, she finds that not all of their crimes are what she would call heinous. Then her work has her crossing paths with a marked man who turns out to be a disgraced former detective trying to solve the high-level case that she died in. She decides to partner with him to find answers about her forgotten life...as long as he doesn't find out about her deal with the Devil. Straightforward plot that advances at a good pace, bringing up questions of doubt and guilt (did that last sinner really deserve to go to Hell? But *I* don't want to end up in Hell... :S) and questions of what constitutes sin or sinfulness, with the added mystery of Scarlet's past and her new partner's disgrace. The tone is grim--though there's no gratuitous gore--the setting a city mired in corruption. The first volume ends on a cliffhanger with the strong possibility of important revelations to come in the next volume.
Content concerns: occasional swearing (F-bombs), murder (including murder of a child, though off-screen and never seen) though not presented with gratuitous gore, corrupt authorities (bribes etc); no nudity/makeout/sex scenes yet (a few flashes of bare midriffs while changing clothes)
I first read these episodes on WEBTOON. I enjoyed seeing Graveweaver's additional artwork in the printed version. In the early episodes, I had difficulty understanding Chase's motivations. But that eventually becomes clear. And, sorry Chase, your pet is the ugliest cat I've ever seen.

Thanks to NetGalley for an e-arc in exchange of my honest review!
the character art is vastly different from what I was expecting from the cover and not my style, but the background art was amazing...whenever it would be included and not just be grayscale. Remembering this was a Webtoon first made a lot of sense for the art style, though. The plot is interesting enough for me to want to continue and caught me off guard a couple times, but it is moving extremely fast where a lot of the tension is just swooped away. I do really like the philosophical moments especially being right next to silly little moments that help bond the characters, so I definitely feel like this has potential and I will keep reading but my hope aren't super high for where this can go right now
Our main lead just died and was dragged to hell where she met the devil who gives her a choice: be his grim reaper or get sent to the ninth circle of hell for eternity because apparently she's the worst of the worst sinners. She (of course) agrees to the less painful option and is now on a quota of one sinner per day and her only indicator is a red X on her targets. No clue what they did to deserve it, or what their punishment will be, just pick a target and do the job.
Now under the alias Scarlet, she's also searching for her own secrets. Because she doesn't remember how she died... or what she did that was so horrible... There's a lot of character questions, a lot of world building questions, and a lot of worry over the consequences of Scarlet's choice. Great start so far and I'm highly curious to see where this goes.
I received an eARC of this title through NetGalley in return for an honest review.
This was a cool start to a graphic novel. I like the idea that the main character does not remember how they got to be such a bad person to where they were sent to hell in the first place, but it seems like you will slowly learn about that as you go. This volume also ends in a big cliffhanger, which is good for publication purposes, but bad for a reader who just want to know the answers!
The characters were interesting, a grim reaper teaming up with someone who has sinned. Wanting to know what both of them have done to get where they are is intriguing. The art is well done and there are comic relief moments amidst the darkness of the plot and story.
Scarlet had just been appointed the role of a grim reaper. She had no other choice but to accept, otherwise she will be sent to the deepest circle of hell: oblivion. All she has to do is meet her quota everyday by killing 1 sinner marked with an X. But things get even more interesting when a mysterious detective shows up, X and all.
Fun concept. The story is doing a really good job in exploring different types of evil and what is a sin and questioning morality. I’m enjoying the psychological queries. As well as the analogy of a capitalist society.
The art is giving comic with webtoon. I do like that the whole story is coloured. The abstract hell art is also super cool.
OMG! *flails* This was so cool! About a girl who has, apparently as she cannot remember and no one not even the devil will tell her, committed such terrible crimes she would go straight to the deepest and worst pits of hell... unless she becomes the personal grim reaper. From there on it is bringing sinners to hell, meeting a guy who is also a sinner but also a detective and I loved seeing them get more and more friendly (though his fashion is questionable and I still have many questions about him), super awesome powers, moral questions, and then that ending. I need more. Desperately need more. The art was so cool!
Loved this! I haven’t spent much time on WEBTOON but I can say that everything I’ve read from there so far has been great.
This is an excellent blend of humor and a crisis of morality as “Scarlet” buys her relative freedom from purgatory by becoming the Grim Reaper and delivering the souls of sinners to Satan. She teams up with a detective who seems good on the outside, yet bears the mark of a sinner. All goes well until Scarlet questions why some people are labeled as sinners and what she did in her human life to put her in this position.
2.5/3 Stars (rounded up to 3). So the cover of this is impressive, that’s what immediately drew me to this manga! However, I’m not sure this webtoon turned manga lives up to its cover art. I liked the intentional style shifts of art as the story progressed through POVs and flashbacks. The juxtaposition of light and dark colors is paired really well with the narrative too. But for me, the story as a whole was a little clumsy. The pacing was sporadic and I had a hard time sticking with this narrative. Thank you VIZ Media, GRAVEWEAVER, and NetGalley for providing an eARC for review!
Like, at some points it feels interesting. And then at other points, it feels like maybe an edgy fifteen year old wrote it. The art leaves a lot to be desired. At times, I think Scarlet particularly looks cool and interesting, but then I look at almost every other character and I'm ... disappointed. I guess Satan looks cool sometimes, too.
I don't know if I am going to continue on with this. I kind of wish the art was a little more to my liking because I feel like I would be more inclined to continue the story.
VIZ Media provided an early and honest review. 3 Stars I'm really interested in the overall concept! It’s a blend of humor and a crisis of morality as our FMC delivers marked souls to the devil. I saw some reviews saying the art style was a bit flat, but I still liked it. I'm not too sure how I feel about the pacing. It was a little too fast paced for me to really get into the world. I think this has a lot of potential, and I plan to read future volumes!
Interesting. I like the plot and the characters. Very interesting storyline. The girl dies and becomes a grim reaper in order to not face her punishment in hell so she has to dispose of one sinner a day. She doesn't know what she did in her life to get such a punishment so she'll gladly do this. along the way she meets this would be detective who is also a sinner. she's using him for the time being but is also growing close to him. I'm interested to see where this series goes.
Thank you, Viz Media & NetGalley, for this arc. Here is my honest review in exchange for the arc. A mixture of humorous, wacky and utterly dark. The art style is very flat, which isn't bad, but not what I'm used to. I feel very torn with it all: the flow of the story, the concept, the art & the future of the plot.
I've always loved the idea of the grim reaper and this webtoon has sparked that love again, that art style and use of colour is so vibrant and scarlet is such a good MC along with chase bringing some comedy along. I can't wait to see her relationship build with him and Satan and watch her learn about her past. (Read in one sitting I loved it that much)
