Taro Sakamoto was once a legendary hit man considered the greatest of all time. Bad guys feared him! Assassins revered him! But then one day he quit, got married, and had a baby. He’s now living the quiet life as the owner of a neighborhood store, but how long can Sakamoto enjoy his days of retirement before his past catches up to him?!
A young Sakamoto and his classmates' mission to assassinate Kindaka goes sideways, and they now find themselves somehow working with their intended target to protect some VIPs from an assassination plot. They later learn that Kindaka is part of a special assassination group known as the Order! Can they survive the onslaught of hit men that lies in wait?!
This is fine, if you like this story so far you will like this volume. I mean there is this big fight and yet much of this flashback story & fighting just felt like filler. We are getting even more new characters that I really don't care about even with their backstory. You even know who is not in danger in these stories because they are the characters telling the story from their past.
I finally caught up with the story after months of taking it slow.
Review :
The problem with Sakamoto Days is the same as the rest of its contemporaries ; not giving itself enough room to breathe.
While I understand & appreciate the nature of the battle shonen genre, I refuse to accommodate the notion that there has to be a bit of action in every chapter for the story to be able to capture the reader's interest in the long term. Some of the pioneers never did that so why should the new gen? Why has it become a norm? When did we normalize such a form of storytelling?
Sakamoto Days brazenly takes the backseat when it comes to properly exploring the characters & dilly dally around the very themes it sets out to tackle with misplaced humor that robs almost every scene of seriousness & gravity of the assassin business, thereby making key moments somewhat forgettable.
But credit where credit is due, action sequences are extremely well done. If a character is getting punched on a page, you can feel the impact wafting over you like a shockwave.
The panels are artistic and the author doesn't miss a beat when it comes to harnessing the double page spreads to drive the point home.
If you're the type to enjoy back to back action, this is right up your alley.
Nothing too special but it was an enjoyable read. The flashback regarding Sakamoto and Uzuki's past ends and it was great to learn more about the past, especially about Rion Akao. In the present, two new strong characters are introduced and it's pretty much X (and his assassins) vs The Order. The last few chapters were good, I'm getting warmed up to Hyo as well.
A great palate cleanser to reset your mind between the previous and next mental task. It is funny, but not ha-ha funny like Way of the Househusband, it is more subtle. The absolutely over-the-top fight scenes between a convenience store clerk and the hit-men sent to assassinate him are just that.
The action scenes and wide background shots are amazing artwork.
Since there will be more characters involved in the battle with Slur, i believe the vol after this will get more intense. Can’t wait for next volume in Indonesia. Let’s go!
I love Sakamoto Days!!! The conclusion of the Past arc rolls beautifully into the start of the Thailand arc and I am so hyped for the group in focus here🔥 each volume adds more and more layers to this fascinating plot so many excellent characters with unique motives
“Working hard isn’t painful. What’s painful is facing moments of failure.”
The pace in this entry feels heavier and more suffocating than what we usually get from the series. Where humor usually cuts through the tension, this time the fights and conversations carry more weight, with hardly any comic relief. Characters are tested in ways that go beyond clever fight choreography, pushing them to confront questions of loyalty, survival, and the cost of caring about others in such a ruthless profession. The action sequences still have that trademark inventiveness, but they’re underpinned by a sense of loss and consequence that lingers even after the panels turn.
What makes this volume stand out is how much it leans into the past while tying it to the present. Relationships that seemed like side notes earlier suddenly gain gravity, and the blurred line between friend and enemy becomes more pressing. Trust, betrayal, and the idea of what it means ‘to protect someone’ get pushed to the forefront, and the emotional weight lands hard. It feels like the series is shifting gears from being primarily action-driven to something darker and more layered, though it still manages to be thrilling at every turn.
The closing chapters set the stage for an arc that feels both dangerous and heartbreaking. The mystery surrounding certain characters deepens, leaving the reader questioning motives and outcomes in a way that makes the wait for the next volume almost unbearable. While some may miss the lighter tone of earlier entries, there’s no denying that this installment raises the bar in intensity.
2025 Me last year was lying to myself saying I didn’t really like the artwork. I love the artwork. What was I going off about
2024 I’ve been thinking about the artwork. I don’t think it’s awful but I’m not like awestruck by it either. I think it’s about average? Maybe? Idk. I like the character designs a lot. I like the single page art. I think what makes this fun is the personalities.
is red hair girl gonna do anything anymore? I feel bad for her, she's a part of the main unit but she didn't even crack the top 10 in the popularity poll. Maybe I'm to blame, i dont even know her name.
so sakamoto seems to have come to terms with rion’s death, but nagumo is determined to dig deeper?? i hope she’s alive but if she is it looks like she’s an enemy
Chapter 118: Aren't you afraid of dying? I didn't now how much time you guys had. I was just thinking about the fastest way to kill him without moving. In other words, you're afraid of us dying! Huh? I hope you can keep finding more people to care about. How came? It makes us better fighters. That is, for types like you and me.
Chapter 118: What if you had to weigh the people you care about against other people's lives? What would you do? I'd kill whoever I had to without hesitation to protect Akira. Even if it meant killing my own heart.
Chapter 118: Killing yourself... I want to be strong too.

Chapter 121: For eight years, there was no trace of her. And then, just a few months ago, there was a record of her accessing the JAA site. What? Rion Akao issued the billion-yen bounty on Sakamoto's head.

What's painful is facing moments of failure. But I trained every day until I bled. All to one day stand side by side with the genius monsters.
"I don't understand what he's talking about. Does that make me stupid?"
With this, I have caught up to the current volume releases in Japan. Yay!
I read this one too soon after the previous volume so I don't remember if the flashback arc ended here or there. I think here. Anyway, the arc was good, but it was kinda just wheel-spinning. It doesn't teach us anything too new about Slur other than a) he didn't like killing and b) Rion seemed to teach him to fight for his friends. This leads into the intro of two to four new members of Slur's group ("to four" because we see two, and two more are alluded to, but don't yet make appearances). The most important thing is that Rion is assumed to be secretly alive, which isn't really something we needed the flashback for, but whatever. It's a balance between "this doesn't add anything to the Whole" but "it's good on its own," which is okay for a manga arc. I mean, I judge other manga more harshly for having seemingly disconnected arcs, but my favorite manga is Dragon Ball in which Buu has nothing to do with Freeza or Cell. So....
I forgot to mention last volume, but the reason Sakamoto, Nagumo, and Rion were "punished" by being sent on the mission for The Order was apparently because they reveal themselves to civilians too much. But then they spent the entire rest of the arc going wild in public. I mention it here because the same thing is happening now that we're back in the present. Well, it's been happening the entire manga, honestly.
This was partly true with Rion and it's true with the new woman Kumanori as well: Suzuki-sensei has something like an Akutami-esque art-style that strongly favors male characters. So Rion is kinda hot, but restricted to the sausage-fest-y way Suzuki draws women. Kumanori reminds me a lot of the chick in JJK who can pull the sky around her body; she's hotter than many other women in the manga, but would definitely look way better if drawn by Oda / Horikoshi / Tabata.
It's way funny how dudes on MangaPlus would say they want women to step on them, then Kumanori's entrance to the battle against Heisuke and Hyo has her landing on a dude and crushing him into a bloody mess.

This volume has a good mix of character development and action. We finish off Sakamoto's flashback finding out what happened with Akao and Uzuki (or did we?). Then we get back to the present with Sakamoto and team heading off to find Rion before all hell breaks loose. But of course, all hell breaks loose a little too quickly. While I enjoyed the action just as soon as they landed in Thailand, this could have benefitted from taking it a bit slower. Sometimes, a little tension is nice to help set things up before everything gets really heated. However, I found that I really enjoyed the team up between Heisuke and Hyo, a pairing I never thought I would see. I wasn't a fan of Hyo before, but he's surprisingly grown on me and I hope we get to see more of this character.
There are a lot of characters though, and some of them are feeling like they're getting the DBZ treatment, as in other characters are becoming too strong and the story too complicated for everyone to tag along.
The flashback continues into the pages of volume 14. The flashback concludes within the volume and is very entertaining as well as enlightening. What we learn seems very interesting and to me gives some serious foreshadowing but did not feel all that weighty as I reflect. But what I will say, was I was entertained the entire time, and that has to count heavily for something. There are some heavy revelations, but they are not substantiated in this volume…as what is the fun in the reveal if it is too quickly proven in an assassin graphic novel? Kudos to Yuto Suzuki for injected the story with this heart pounding volume!
4.25/5 I really appreciate the backstory that we are getting in the flashback arc. In this volume, we finish up that arc, which provides more information about Slur and his connection to Sakamoto, Nagumo, and Akira's aunt. It provides some more questions that I cannot wait to have answered. The story then shifts into a new arc with our protagonists fully going after Slur. We also get introduced to some more of Slur's group. I appreciate the variety of characters in this story and how each one uses a unique technique to fight.
I am enjoying that this volume is picking up from the last one, amidst a flashback story and in mid action as Young Sakamoto and Co. are in mid mission.
I'm surprised by the reveal, even though I knew it would come, beca se I didn't think Kindaka's involvement with the Order was quite this way and while I don't want to spoil it, the specifics of it is what surprised me.
Three stars because as much as I enjoyed this, it felt like filler to me, and a good one because it answers questions while raising new ones. I really can't wait for the next volume as this was again, left on a cliffhanger.

With this volume the flashback ends, and I think the ending raises a lot of questions. It is, however, still a very satisfactory ending in my opinion because I just can't wait for those questions to be answered. This volume even has a very big bombshell drop that I think is just jaw dropping for first time readers. Also, the small interactions Hyo has with a main character of ours I think are very nice and sweet :)
wow. grief really does catch up to you at the most random of days because why did this volume force me to confront my own? losing a friend is never easy, let alone the circumstances that led sakamoto and nagumo to lose theirs. i couldn’t stop crying at the heaviness this brought me —
to my dear friend, and to rion akao, you were a good person. no, you were the best. you were a force of nature. and if you were still here, you would have been unstoppable.
