NO NOT MY FOUND FAMILY BEING FORCIBLY TORN APART😭😱💔
so many things happened in this volume as the series rushes towards its end, and i am devastated.
su-won and hak finally have a conversation alone, and hak confronts su-won for his actions from volume one. hak also learns from su-won that all of the dragon warriors aside from zeno die young, and he is devastated by the news.

4.5 stars.
At this point, I've come to accept that Yona of the Dawn is not exactly happy and sunny right now, but I was still not prepared for the heartbreaking pain that this volume would inflict on me.
I've been nursing this feeling of impending doom for a little while, but it feels like said doom is coating every page now, and it really makes it hard to read through every new chapter.
Not to say that the story is not as incredibly compelling and meaningful as it has always been, because it is, and with every new development things only become more and more revelatory and intriguing; maybe it is precisely because of how deep we're on the lore and mystery that everything else feels so highly, deeply fated and claustrophobic.
While there is so much that I appreciate and down-right adore about this volume, the interactions between Hak and Soo-won take front and center this time around.
Calling emotionally charged what there is between these two would be an understatement, and it certainly does nothing but become more and more complicated, and maybe it's because of exactly that reason that I can never get enough of them.
They certainly know how to always break my heart.
Both of them were so vulnerable and raw, and despite myself, even Soo-won really struck my heartstrings with his parts.
As dark as things can get in this series, and lately they've really been on a roll, I'm grateful to Kusanagi for always sneaking a dash of humor to make everything that little bit more palatable.
Sure, there weren't many occasions for laughter to sprout this time around, but the few situations that lend themselves to it were nothing if not completely hilarious and heartwarming in the most unique of ways.
It just really seems impossible to not find a kernel of enjoyment when I love the characters so dearly.
One thing is for certain, though, I'm not looking forward to continue in this path we've been on lately, even if I am really invested and desperate for things to go back to the happy old days.

“I made that wish once. I wanted to show her off. I wanted to tell the bastards that chased her out of the castle, ‘Look. This is Princess Yona. She hacked off her hair and took up the sword in order to protect this country. She’s the strongest person I know. Feast your eyes on our Princess’. At long last, he probably sees the princess as his equal. Why does he again make my dream come true in the worst possible way imaginable?”

“In the first place, you say that the princess back then wasn’t good enough, but isn’t it just that you couldn’t see her potential? It’s not that the princess couldn’t do anything. She worked herself to death and made her dormant abilities her own! You chase her away, and once she comes back, you want to selfishly make her ruler now that you can use her?! When will you be done toying with her?!”

“Lineage barely matters. There are even enemies who you feel bowing your head at because after all is said and done, we just happened to be born in different places.”

MY HEART CANNOT TAKE THIS
After the intense political plotting of the last few volumes, we focus back in on some incredibly emotional story beats for Suwon & Hak and Yona & the Dragons & Yun. I have no idea where the story is going from here. I am emotionally compromised. I will not be prepared for whenever we get a focus on my baby Sinha.
AND WHAT THE FUCK DID SU-WON SAY TO HAK?????

I feel that it’s very fitting Yona of the Dawn (Akatsuki no Yona) was not only one of my first reads in 2025, but the first manga. Love this series and these characters so much. My reading year is off to a great start.

This has to be the saddest AkaYona volume to date. With the end of the manga coming so fast, absolutely everything feels so intense and completely heartbreaking. Everyone gets separated and they’re all so worried about each other, and this completely breaks me. I genuinely don’t know how I will handle this manga being over.
The plot doesn’t even progress that much in this volume, but the characters are trying to handle the horrible events that happened in the previous chapters. And this will truly remind everyone and the reader just how… mortal they all are. I can’t even talk a lot about about anything happening in it because it would go spoilery really fast, but it gets easier to realise the outcome of it all. Everyone is pushed to their limit. They won’t all make it alive. And they’ll have to face the outcomes of this war.
I’m truly not ready for the end.

It doesn’t matter what form you’re in, brother. Just come back to us.
Screaming, crying, throwing up—I think I need coffee to calm my nerves down. This is a hell of a stressing volume and I’ve been crying a lot. (Fuck this shit, I’m tired of crying)

The little note in the back of this volume about the cover after what happened in this volume is just foul 😭😭
On a side note, I don’t see this series wrapping up any time soon. I am very concerned about how I’m going to make room for more because 42 is already a little absurd (not saying that I didn’t enjoy all 42+ volume, it is just a lot to invest on one series).

"After my death, Yona is to be Kohka's next ruler."
Stupid Su-Won. He may be right about how Yona wouldn't have been able to rule Kohka as a sheltered princess, but still. As her friend, he could've believed in her like Hak did.
"It doesn't matter what form you're in, brother. Just come back to us." Ahh...Hak called Jaeha his brother 😭❤️
"But if I never see any of them again, I don't know how I'll bear it." Aww Yun 😭💔. I hope there will be a happy ending to all this (I'm sure there will be...there just has to be). No way does this end with Yona, Hak and Yun alone without the dragons. I refuse to believe Jaeha is gone forever.

um HELLO?!?! THAT ENDING?! MY JAEHA?! WHAT THE FRICK FRACK.
Plot: slowly progressing.
Romance: standstill
Politics: heavy
Anger at Suwon: high.
RECAP: Dragons are missing, Yona and Hak want to go looking. Hak and Suwon talk, Suwon says he wants Yona to be the next ruler and then tells Hak he's sick with the crimson illness. Yona, Hak, and Gija leave to find the other three. Yun stays back and cries. Yona has dreams that it's too late. They run into Hak's fake wife and kids and then run into Jaeha who is less human. Villagers revolt and Jaeha vanishes.
