I really wanted to like this but I was confused most of the time. This volume captures three stories in an episodic format: the Trix manipulating Stella to help them open a forbidden book; Musa’s and Madame Greta’s feelings; and Bloom and Musa’s new job.

Starting off this volume, I loved the character introductions because it’s a good summary. However it was quite lengthy, so I hope the latter volumes shorten it. The first story with the Trix was chaotic, mean and evil. I liked how they kept it consistent and the Trix just cared about their own benefit. It really made them seem like true antagonists and I appreciated how the story doesn’t try to sugarcoat it. However half way into this story, it starts to get confusing with sudden jumps and unexplained events.

This continues in the second and third story as well, and eventually I started questioning if I missed things in previous volumes such as, Mitril’s introduction or Riven and Musa’s interaction. I felt like although the story does a good job incorporating multiple characters from the show, their sudden appearances and unexplained relationship changes, makes this series a companion to the show, rather than a supporting or abridged series.

I always love the color schemes used in this series because it’s so colorful. It’s able to relay emotions using cold or warm colors, as well as expertly used them to define character personalities and settings. The character designs aren’t anything unique, but I did find the artwork a bit disorderly at times. For example, some characters randomly had slightly larger feet; weird head structures or facial emotions that seemed rushed; or backgrounds that were suddenly missing items. Also, the speech bubble placements were my enemy because they were all over the place in this volume. That’s likely the fault of the varying panel sizes, which isn’t a bad thing but it’s just poorly planned, in my perspective.

Overall, I’m still going to continue this series because I did enjoy the show and I do still want to give this series another chance. This volume feels like it was doing a bit too much and is definitely glazing over the finer details. I would recommend giving this series a go if you’ve watched the show already.

I loved how they incorporated different characters and different events and it’s not exactly like the tv show!! I hope they never stop making these. Best books of the year definitely
