To fulfill his promise, Morio takes Yukiko on an exciting seaside drive for her very first trip to the beach. There, she learns about the beautiful and terrifying wonders of the ocean. Then, Morio finally meets Yukiko’s dad—who’s convinced that his little girl shouldn’t be dating a delinquent! What kinds of troubles and adventures await Morio and Yukiko in this final volume?
What an absolutely adorable series! From start to finish, it was really good. The characters are all very likeable, and the relationships are just perfect. I actually can't wait to re-read at some point in the future.
This last volume kind of has the vibe of a series that was suddenly cancelled, and so had to wrap up all of its loose ends (I don't think that's actually the case, at least according to what I saw on the English side of Google, but it does feel that way for me). So much important plot happens in this last (incredibly thick) volume that it kind of makes a lot of what we've done up to this point feel like dilly-dallying. We meet the parent/grandparent, get our driver's license, go on multiple trips, get over unrequited crushes, tour college campuses, go for our GED, etc etc... it kind of makes me sad that these important things weren't done more organically throughout the books. I think it fits, though, for a manga which generally bit off more than it could chew in terms of balancing the plot and its relevant themes.
In general, I feel like this whole series is a 2.5-3 star overall. It tried. It tried so damn hard. It was pleasant and easy to read... but it got lost in the weeds of its own messaging quite a lot, to where I feel like telling an actual story with plot points was left behind. I would love to say that this manga is a great introduction to allyship for young people, but I feel like this series isn't even good for that, because its messaging sometimes IS a bit harmful or misguided (like Shishio saying he might be into girls someday even though he's gay). But you can see how hard the mangaka is trying and I really do applaud them for taking on such strong ideas during their first publication -- you can tell they really do care about these issues and I admire and applaud them for that. I won't say that this manga didn't help open my mind to be more aware of other ways of thinking and living, too. It's not a failure for me, but it's no resounding success either.
Nevertheless, I did enjoy the ride and I'm glad I got on, even if things were a bit bumpy.
This book is THICK because there's a lot to wrap up before this series is over.
It's summertime! And summertime means beaches and fireworks! Yukiko and Kurokawa go on a trip to the beach and it's super adorable to see Yukiko experience something amazing and new. Kurokawa meets Yukiko's dad which is a whole different way of looking at discrimination, specifically from someone who desperately doesn't want to be. Yukiko and Kurokawa go on their first overnight trip together and we've got a great example of how to communicate with your partner. Izumi has to figure out her own love life because being a Shishio fangirl for the rest of her life isn't healthy. Then Yukiko meets Kurokawa's granny; there's a couple more cameos from other characters and their "what are you going to do next?" moments and we wrap up this lovely story.
Overall, I learned a lot and I implemented some of it into my workplace (I worked in a library) plus the leading couple are really unique and offer a rarely seen look at the life of people with disabilities. A+ A++ even.
I really enjoyed this series. Yes, at points it becomes a bit heavy handed with it's message of acceptances and disabilities but at the same time it's so heartwarming and touching, and a positive vibe throughout that really made me enjoy the story and the characters especially.
This volume has them go to a cave on their first real vacation together and it's both cute and well done. The ending is a bit of a let down, feeling too simple and not enough tied up. But overall I enjoyed this series and will re-read down the line!
this review is for the whole series (volume 1 - 8):
i wonder how i even managed to stumble upon this gem of a manga.
srsly one of the most wholesome things i’ve ever read. i ended up reading for hours straight until 2 am.
learned so many things about blindness and disabilities.
i feel like my world just got expanded thanks to the characters.
yukiko, aono, morio, sora, shishio and all the others i can’t recall, you’ve made me laugh and cry!! both in sadness and happiness!! thank you so much!!!
The final volume of a fantastic series. It ends in the same way the series has progressed by showing another obstacle the Yukiko and Kurokawa faced in their relationship. This time they have to deal with Yukiko's father and going out on their first trip together as a couple. It's a perfect mixture of sweet and emotional this series was known for and I am sad to see it end.
This is the perfect length for a shounen contemporary romance for me. I got all the sweet and squeal worthy moments, without things veering too far off track. Loved how this series ended, and would recommend the series as a whole!
The ending to Love in Sight feels like the beginning of a new chapter and that’s awesome. People get their happy ending and I get left wanting more, and that’s how it should be. I hope more people read this so I have more people to talk about it with. Will be recommending the series to my friends for sure
