I was really excited when I heard about Before Demon Slayer, but I was quickly disappointed by this lackluster manga.

Overhunter Hunter: 3 stars - This story is the one that Demon Slayer was based on. It was interesting to see how different features of this story were used in the main series. The main character was really cool and it was fun to see a strong demon slayer with physical disabilities. I loved getting to see Lady Tamayo, but I’m glad that Gotouge ultimately took another direction in regards to her relationship with Muzan. I also think the character design is a lot better in the main series.

The Monjushiro Brothers: 2 stars - The bug concept was a little creepy and not my cup of tea, so this story didn’t work for me. The ending also felt really confusing. I liked the brothers’ personalities though and I have some guesses about which characters they might have influenced in the Demon Slayer series.

A Man Called Ribs: 2 stars - This story fell really flat for me. It was a creative idea, but I wasn’t fond of any of the characters.

Zigzag from Haeniwa: 2 stars - I really liked Zigzag’s design, but I hated his personality. He was like Gojo but if Gojo was a terrible human. I enjoyed the idea of a human not being able to use his powers because of a curse, so the idea behind this story was a solid base for a story, but it definitely needed something more to make the story more interesting.

This collection provides some insight on both Koyoharu Gotouge’s evolution as a storyteller as well as their inspirations for “Demon Slayer”.

As a reader and a fan, I always find it interesting to see how an author has grown and developed their craft over time.

Here, readers get to see some of the considerations Gotouge makes when crafting a story as well as how those considerations have changed over time. I found it particularly interesting to see how Gotouge has been playing around with the idea of creating a new kind of selfless protagonist for a while. In this collection, you can see several prototypes for Tanjiro.

These collections always make me feel like I’m wandering around inside the author’s head. Early concepts and percolating ideas abound. Many things were clearly scrapped—but, just as many core elements remain.

It’s truly fascinating.

Definitely recommend for fans of “Demon Slayer”. I think most readers would at least be interested in seeing the humble beginnings of such a now beloved author in the genre~

Je ne suis pas une grande adepte des recueils d’histoires courtes comme celui ci. Ce n’est pas forcément quelque chose que j’aime énormément. Mais de temps en temps je me laisse tenter quand même, on n’est pas à l’abri d’une belle surprise! Celui là me tentait énormément étant donné que le mangaka est celui de Demon Slayer, un de mes mangas préférés. J’avais très envie de découvrir d’autres histoires de ce mangaka. Même si le format histoire courte n’est pas mon préféré. Comme je m’en doutais je ressors de cette lecture tout de même très mitigé.

Ce qui me gêne le plus dans ce format d’histoires courtes c’est justement le fait qu’elles soient courtes qui me dérange. J’ai toujours la sensation que ce n’est pas développé, les histoires manquent de profondeurs, c’est toujours vu en surface, il nous manque des éléments etc.. Et c’est ce qu’il s’est passé ici. Les histoires ne sont pas mauvaises, bien au contraire je les ai trouvés intéressantes. Mais comme je viens de l’expliquer, le fait que ce soit très court nous laisse un peu perplexe. J’aurais aimé qu’elles soient bien plus développés que ça, que l’on nous offre plus de profondeur, plus de développement.

La première historie est dans le même univers que Demon Slayer. Et j’ai trouvé ça très sympa. Les trois autres sont totalement inédites. Si les histoires en elle même étaient assez chouette à lire, j’ai tout de même regretté une chose. Graphiquement parlant, je n’ai pas trouvé ça incroyable. J’ai trouvé ça même assez brouillon en fait. C’est très bizarre comme sensation mais c’est vraiment ce que j’ai ressenti au moment de ma lecture. Et j’ai trouvé ça très dommage tout de même.

On retrouve tout de même la patte du mangaka. Chaque histoire à son côté fantastique et horrifique. Et on ne peut le nier, il a tout de même un vrai talent pour offrir des histoires très sombres. J’ai beaucoup aimé l’histoire avec les deux frères, c’est celle que j’ai trouvé la plus « horrible » d’ailleurs. J’ai eu une préférence pour la dernière celle sur ZigZag, beaucoup d’humour ressort de celle là et j’ai vraiment apprécier la découvrir. Chaque histoire est vraiment sympa à lire et à son petit truc à elle. Même si je suis restée un peu perplexe suite à ma lecture, ça reste un petit recueil qui reste plaisant à découvrir.

Beautiful drawings. Slightly weak on story telling but I was happy to see how these characters in earlier works form the idea of Demon Slayer. It felt good to trace how Koyoharu Gotouge develops idea that eventually became Demon Slayer, while never losing one’s style from the very beginning.

Quelle che ho preferito sono state la seconda "i fratelli monjushiro" e l'ultima "haeniwa-zigzag".

Era la prima volta che leggevo qualcosa di Gotouge e quello che ho letto mi ha messo ancora più voglia di leggere Demon Slayer 😎 Ho sentito da molto dire che lo stile del mangaka non è bello.... a me è piaciuto sicuramente in questo volume è uno stile alle prime armi. Ma anche così a me non è dispiaciuto per questo Demon Slayer mi attira ancora di più! Perché leggendolo avrei modo di vedere lo stile del mangaka rafforzarsi e cambiare🤗

🔹Mᴏɴᴊᴜsʜɪʀᴏ Kʏᴜᴅᴀɪ: Dos hermanos con un linaje familiar de asesinos, es contratado por una niña para vengar a su padre. Pero lo que ella no sabe es que las habilidades de estos sicarios supera cualquier habilidad humana. Es la historia que más me gustó 😃

🔸Rᴏᴋᴋᴏᴛsᴜ-sᴀɴ: modificando la idea del ángel de la guarda, el protagonista de esta historia tiene el deber de purificar a las personas de los malos sentimientos y exorcizarlos. Está acompañado de un kappa que le pertenecia al purificador que le salvó la vida.

🔹Hᴀᴇɴɪᴡᴀ ɴᴏ ᴢɪɢᴢᴀɢ: un sicario que tiene el poder de matar a las personas mediante las palabras provoca suicidios en masa y depende del protagonista, un ser egocéntrico y de pocas pulgas, evitar que eso siga ocurriendo. Al igual que en la historia anterior, él es un rompedor de maldiciones.

Interesantes y diversos para pasar el rato, y tener algo más del autor para conocer un poco sus intereses e inspiraciones.

1. Pemburuan Melampau
Cerita dia agak mengelirukan pada mulanya. Ianya diakui sendiri oleh pelukis. Lagipun karya ni dilukis tanpa editor. Lukisan pun agak carca merba. Komik Demon Slayer berdasarkan karya inilah. Kisah pasal perlawanan antara setan dan pemburu setan.

2. Adik-Beradik Monjushiro
Dua beradik raksasa. Mereka ni pembunuh upahan. Diupah oleh seorang budak perempuan untuk membunuh pembunuh ayahnya. Begitulah ringkasan cerita ni.

3. Si Rusuk
Perempuan penjaga rumah kanak2 yatim Aiji'in dalam cerita Si Rusuk ni juga ada dalam cerita Adik-beradik Monjushiro. Semesta yang sama. Tapi ni kisah pasal perawat pula. Perawat yang merawat orang yang dijangkiti tenaga jahat yang boleh menyebabkan orang itu hilang akal.

4. Zigzag Dari Haeniwa
Kisah si Zigzag ni paling menarik antara keempat2 cerita dalam koleksi ni. Zigzag bekerja sebagai pelerai sumpahan. Dia ada kelebihan mengawal tumbesaran tumbuh2an. Kelebihan itu digunakan untuk mencari dan mengajar pembuat sumpahan dan orang yang mengupah pembuat sumpahan. Walaupun dia tak sudi buat kerja keadilan tapi dia terpaksa lakukannya sebab dia sendiri pun disumpah untuk berbuat baik. Seronok jugak kalau karya ni dijadikan karya bersiri dan latar belakang dunia sumpahan Zigzag ni dikembangkan.

Termine el año leyendo una colección de cuentos cortos y comienzo el año leyendo otra colección de cuentos cortos. Debo decir que lo principal de todo es que me he quedado con ganas de más y eso siempre es una buena señal. Me ha gustado mucho ver los orígenes de kimetsu no yaiba y reconocer personajes, pero por lejos mi historia favorita ha sido la de Rokkotsu-san. La historia, la estética, el cuento completo me ha gustado muchísimo y seguiría leyendo del personaje sin dudarlo! Una bonita colección donde se ve la esencia de Gotouge y una buena lectura rápida y amena para comenzar el año.

Just like the collection of Tatsuki Fujimoto's early works, Koyoharu Gotouge's pre-Demon Slayer work is a great little volume. Outside of the one-shot that was later developed into Demon Slayer, it's fascinating to see an artist's early work, knowing how it evolved and also how they stayed true to certain elements. It's oddly reassuring to know that reading Gotouge's work makes the reader ask "Wow, seriously, who hurt you?". It's a fascinating parade of trauma processed through art, and an odd sense of justice that somehow remains a recurring theme through their work. (I received an ARC of this title from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.)

It is very interesting to see the genesis of Gotouge's work prior to Demon Slayer. You can see little bits of it in every story as if these short stories were the "training arc" before a fully serialised series representing the final battle.

As interesting as it is, you can see why these shorts weren't picked up to be series in their own right. They aren't as clear-cut as concepts, as you'll see in other one-shot manga chapters.

I always love seeing mangaka's one shots as it shows different facets of them. It's also cool to see what influenced them and how they transformed they art style or storytelling. I recommend this for people into darker stories.

These short stories are all very fun and interesting. Some of these I was very surprised to know that they didn’t get picked up. A couple of them made sense that they didn’t get picked up because they were a little lame but 1 or 2 of these stories are incredible. A pretty fun manga.

Non so voi, ma io adoro conoscere i retroscena di un autore, e in particolare scoprire cosa si nasconde dietro la sua opera più celebre!
Questa raccolta di racconti offre un’interessante panoramica sullo stile di Koyoharu Gotouge attraverso le sue prime pubblicazioni, delle quali lei stessa dice di vergognarsi perché le considera storie imperfette e giovanili, ma che in realtà nascondono un potenziale incredibile.
Il primo racconto, “A caccia del cacciatore”, pone le basi per quello che poi sarebbe diventato “Demon Slayer”; è emozionante vedere una prima bozza della storia che tutti conosciamo oggi.
A seguire troviamo “I fratelli Monjushiro”, che rivela una trama particolare e intricata che sarebbe bello vedere sviluppata anch’essa in una serie a sè stante: due fratelli possiedono dei poteri sovrannaturali, derivati da un ‘insetto interiore’, che usano per assassinare criminali su commissione.
Il terzo racconto, “Rokkotsu”, narra le vicende del ‘purificatore’ Abara, un ragazzo che dedica la propria vita ad alleggerire le persone dal peso delle emozioni negative che fanno lentamente marcire. In poche pagine Koyoharu Gotouge riesce a far commuovere il lettore delineando dei personaggi profondi e perfettamente caratterizzati.
Infine, troviamo il racconto “Haeniwa-Zig Zag”, che vede a sua volta un ragazzo come protagonista, in questo caso però uno “sciogli-magie” con il compito di annullare le maledizioni che mettono in pericolo le persone.
Tutti i racconti hanno lo stesso filo conduttore dei poteri sovrannaturali e della lotta tra il bene e il male, ma nonostante ciò a modo loro sono coinvolgenti ed originali!
Ho apprezzato tantissimo questa lettura e spero che anche le altre tre trame vengano approfondite in futuro ~

Całą treść tomiku w bardzo dużym uproszczeniu można byłoby określić mianem mrocznej fantastyki, w której czytelnik może się doszukiwać jakieś głębi fabularnej. Na planszach mangi pojawiają się demony (i inne potwory), różnorakie emocje, wyrazista akcja i wieloznaczne cierpienie człowieka. Treść do nazbyt rozrywkowych więc nie należy, ale klimat ten powinien spodobać się fanom autora.

Dodatkowym powodem, dla którego warto sięgnąć po tę jednotomówkę, jest otwierająca ją historia (Zabójca łapczywych drapieżców). Jest to bowiem nic innego jak pierwowzór serii Kimetsu no Yaiba. To właśnie to krótkie opowiadanie przerodziło się później w bardziej złożoną serię, którą pokochały miliony czytelników na całym świecie. Na dalszych stronach odbiorca znajdzie jeszcze trzy dość specyficzne opowiadania. Każde z nich podąża własną drogą, jednocześnie łączą je niektóre elementy charakterystyczne dla twórcy, chociażby mocno wyrazisty mrok.

Wszystkie zebrane tu historie mają więc w sobie to „coś”, co sprawia, że mogą one zaciekawić czytelnika (zdecydowanie jednak nie każdego). Należy jednak pamiętać o tym, że jest to zbiór krótkich one-shotów. Nie ma więc tu mowy o nadmiernym rozwijaniu fabuły, poruszaniu wielu wątków czy głębszej prezentacji bohaterów. Całość opowieści najczęściej zamyka się w kilkunastu stronach, pozostawiając wiele niedopowiedzeń....

Un tomo bastante interesante que demuestra que el autor sabe crear conceptos muy atractivos. Porque esa fue lo que se mantuvo constante en las 4 historias que tiene este tomo. Las 4 conceptualmente me encantaron:
-Kagarigari: historia que da origen a Kimetsu no Yaiba, que termina siendo bastante redonda por si sola. Es interesante ver los elementos que se mantuvieron desde este one shot a la obra. Aunque me parece un acierto hacerle los cambios que se hicieron para llevarlo a la serie, me gustó mucho la historia que cuenta acá. (4 estrellas)
-Monjushiro Kyodai: es quizas la que menos me gusta, pero tiene su mérito. Es muy divertida. De eso no hay duda. Pero no llega allenarme del todo (3 estrellas)
-Rokkotsu-san: mi favorita del tomo sin duda. El concepto me encanta. El protagonista también. Y como va desarrollando todo me gusta. Funciona bien, en mi opinión. Se quedó un poco corta y ese es su único defecto. Necesitaba un poco mas de tiempo para que fuese mejor. (4 estrellas)
-Haeniwa no Zigzag: una buena historia para cerrar el tomo. Me hizo acordar un poco a Jujutsu Kaisen, que me encanta. Así que fue muy placentera la historia. El prota por momentos me caía un poco pesado, pero no mucho. (4 estrellas)

Ha llegado a mi vida en el momento idóneo.

Gotouge es une artista al que tengo muchísimo cariño. Guardianes de la Noche me ayudó muchísimo en su día y es una obra que siempre tendrá un lugar especial en mi corazón.

Ahora, que he empezado a hacer comics (llevo tres historias de momento, casi justo las que presenta en este tomo), he empezado a apreciar más este arte al entender los procesos con más claridad.

Y puedo ver la esencia de este autore. Y me gusta muchísimo. Nunca lo sabrá, pero estoy muy agradecida porque haya decidido dedicar su vida a contar historias. Sus historias me llenan el corazón como ninguna otra lo hace.

PD: los personajes de esta obra.......sus diseños son TOP TIER y omg son todos como muy lindos y andróginos I WANT THEIR GENDER???? Also me he enamorado de señor mampara saldría con el 100% quiero darle (1) besito o más si me deja 😳

Le doy esta calificación porque es como una versión medio bizarra de demon slayer y me causó mucha gracia jajajs.

Monjushiro Kyodai - 3 ⭐️
La calificación tiene una razón y es que se nota que está pensado como un primer capítulo de una historia por lo que sentí que no hubo algo realmente interesante, me estaban presentando personajes y ya. Igual me cayó muy bien el chico del piano y el dibujo de la hermana menor también me gustó mucho.

No se si ponerle 5 estrellas porque no te digo que LO AME pero me gustó mucho porque tiene bastante humor y, aunque el protagonista sea un antiheroe, creo que eso le da el toque para ser interesante.
Fue mi one shot favorito del libro. Estaría para que lo serialize jajajsj. 👀👀

Mis primeras lecturas del año suelen ser ligeritas y también las acabo en menos de 24hrs, para darme un empujón al reto lector. De momento la fórmula funciona.

Como siempre pasa es un relato de historias cortas, algunas me gustan más que otras. En este caso las dos últimas creo que fueron mis favoritas. Me gustó mucho ver cómo las diferentes historias tienen algunos puntos en común y temas que se repiten. A pesar de que todas son historias autoconclusivas, tienen el potencial de ser algo más y creo que nada puede ser más halagador que una historia que me deje con ganas de más.

Una estrellita de la puntuación es toda para la primera historia en donde se ven los bases/guiños que se convertirían después en Kimetsu No Yaiba ♥

Before Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba continues the current thread of digging through the archives of now famous manga creators and see what old shames they are hiding. First off this is better than Four Lives Remain which was basically the same story four times. The first story is the prototype for Demon Slayer which for many is the main reason to buy this. However, it isn't a great story with a lot of the actual world building and general information missing. The same can be said about all the stories, no real set up or explanations. It also doesn't help that some come off as Jujutsu Kaisen clones. A solid collection which is only going to appeal to fans of Demon Slayer

amo el artstyle de gotouge, sobre todo cómo maneja las texturas (x ej en los kimono);
mi cuento fav fue el 2do, me re gustó el final;
el 3er cuento empezó bien y la idea era original pero fue un flop el desarollo;
el final del ult cuento me dio gracia;
