Haikyu!! #2
Haikyu!! (3-in-1 Edition), Vol. 2: Includes vols. 4, 5 & 6

MIENTRAS NOSOTROS PRACTICAMOS A MUERTE...

August 17, 2026I’m on a journey to find manga titles to add to our school’s k-8 library. Similarly to the first three volumes, I feel this collection (volumes 4-6) is absolutely appropriate for our grade 7/8 students!
If you, too, are looking to add this to your library, here are a few things worth noting:
1. A few times in the manga, one character refers to a few team managers as “hot chicks.” I don’t personally see a problem with this. It makes sense for the character.
2. In volume 6, the coach tells the high school team to think of their game as “the first sip of an ice-cold beer after a long day… the refreshing taste of that first gulp is in a realm of awesome deliciousness all its own!”
Underage drinking does come up in early YA, so I don’t feel there is a concern here, but I figured I would mention it. If this is a red flag for your collection development, find comfort in the fact that the assistant manager immediately asks the coach to give an example that minors would understand.
VERDICT: This one is going in our collection! Haikyu! has such great messaging about working hard and being there for one another. I like that it might also challenge young readers on their definition of success.
The volume 4-6 collection ended on a cliff hanger, so I plan to keep reading more chapters until I find a place in the story that makes sense for us to stop collecting volumes for our library.

Don’t really have any comments. Still love the small cute and funny moments that happen in the background of the panels sometimes; usually always involving Hinata.
4.5 stars. I’ve finally caught up to what I watched in the anime so this volume was completely new to me. I love the little moments between Hinata and Kageyama…they’re hilarious. I still think it’s cute and funny that Hinata hides behind his taller teammates when he gets intimidated.
Even though it stinks to see the players struggle, it’s kinda nice that Kageyama isn’t perfect. It’s a bit annoying that he seems to be the perfect player when the others are just as good in their own ways.

These volumes were very good. The matches were written with a lot of details and the author explained volleyball terms very well for those of us with rudimentary knowledge of the sport. I will admit Asahi’s storyline with Date Tech did make me emotional. When Asahi and Hinata were speaking after, I did shed a few tears. I am excited to read what happens next and that is what any good author should achieve.

Incredible characters and characterisation, intelligent and understood depiction of the sport.
Action and art that sets a high bar for modern sports shonen.
Paced well and treats the reader with respect and intelligence.

The setting is good and the introductions and building up of a goal and the plays. I learned more about the sport as the story continued.

How dare it end like that! Right on a cliffhanger, darn you! And I have to wait until Tuesday to pick up the next one, too....
Like in the last group of volumes, this was really fun! Tanaka and Hinata are still my favorites, though Asahi is also really fun. Oh, and Kenma, from what little we've seen of him so far. And Nishinoya kind of reminds me of myself sometimes lol. Great characters in this series, really!
Content wise, I have very few things to note. Words such as cr*p and d*mmit/d*amn were used, though mostly in the more intense situations. And one of the players from Nekoma, Taketora Yamamoto (if I can spell right), kept talking about "hot chick managers" and seemed to instantly have a thing for Karasuno's manager, Kiyoko Shimizu, in vol. 4. Very brief, I didn't have a problem with it, but other people might so I thought I'd bring it up.
Overall, the characters are great and I'm loving the story! Still clean for the most part.
