In a not so distant future, genetic engineering is outlawed, the country is ruled by an elected dictatorship, and trials are government-sponsored entertainment. Can one man raise his voice against the system? Should he even try?"The Protest" is a short story about government oppression, bioethics, and personal courage.
A short story; the first published short, as far as I can tell, by this author that is not of the DAVE RIGGLER series. This is a foray into the realm of science fiction, taking on the ethics of the future of human genetic modification.
PRISONER 4123M is charged for his role in the August 13, 2115 protests demanding the right for parents to choose the genetic profile of their offspring in direct contradiction of laws banning any such human genetic modification. In addition, he is charged with engaging in such activity on the blastocyst of DAVID AND KARIN HELMS.
Standing firm on his conviction as a Doctor, and sworn to 'heal' people, PRISONER 4123M contends that genetic modification is consistent with, and mandated by his philosophy of a healer of mankind; healing that goes beyond merely fixing the problems that arise, but healing by doing away with problems before they arise.
THE PROTEST is a story well within my preferred realm of literature; tackling the ethics of tomorrow as they begin to be formed today through the legal processes. I would truly enjoy reading more material by Mr. Hartman in this realm
