Az and her parents are on a month long vacation away from their pride. One day while Az is swimming in a secluded spot she saves a drowning girl which leads to her meeting Tate. A gorgeous boy, a swimmer like Az and definitely human. Despite knowing that her interactions with humans must always be superficial she can't deny the attraction and growing feeling for him. Resisting those is doubly hard when there is no doubt in Tate's mind about what he wants, and that is to be with Az. This vacation will lead Az on a path she never in her life imagined taking.
I absolutely loved this novella. Despite its shortness it was a well rounded story, with plenty of interesting characters and heart pounding moments. Previously in the Firelight series Az has been a pretty bland character, she didn't really stick out and draw my attention. But in Breatless I was pleasantly surprised by her. I got to know her fears and wishes, how she feels about living in the pride. I really like her and her parents. They're very different from other adults in their pride. They let their daughter form her own opinions about humans and chose her own way of life. Tate was also great. He managed to make quite an impression on me in such a short a time. My brain is spinning from ideas of what happens with him and Az after Breathless.
I am curious as to the time placement of this novella. It's marked as 3.5, meaning it takes place after Hidden, the last book in the series, but based on things Az mentions about Jacinda ans Cassian it feels like it takes place before Firelight, the first book in the series. Either way, this was an unexpectedly good read and I would love to get to know more about Az and Tate.

Not good. The heroine (Az) was a bland, insecure, loner Mary Sue who'd never had a boyfriend or done anything memorable or exciting — just the usual boring bitch. Anyway the 'plot' was her going on holiday and meeting the most beautiful boy that ever was, and you know the rest. There's insta-wuv, a bitchy 'slutty' ex and just all around general lameness. The heroine was like every YA heroine that ever was and the hero was like every YA hero that ever was. There was no real story unless of course you think Az whinging about her pathetic life or fangirling over the 'hawt' guy counts as a story. Just boring — a rubbish uninspired romance, a rubbish non 'plot' and a rubbish stereotypical heroine. Rubbish.

Sometimes, I don't look forward to novellas that involve side-characters from a much loved book series. In most cases, I've grown to love those main characters so much that it seems that a short story centered around the protagonist's best friend--I can usually count on it being a bit underwhelming. Well...I had so little faith with this novella in particular. Breathless was just as awesome and a wonderful compliment to the Firelight trilogy and I want MORE!!
Once I got started into this short story, I really liked getting to know Azure, Jacinda's best friend from the Firelight trilogy. Az didn't have a huge role in the primary books but I quickly got the feeling that she might have an interesting story herself. I found her inner voice was refreshingly real and honest. She was initially a little naive when it came to human interaction...sort of like being a visitor to another country but her inner confidence held her quite well. Az was very loyal to her parents and her pride, which also added to her integrity.
However, 'karma' was a word that kept popping in my head while I was reading Breathless. If you recall, Az was a little harsh with Jacinda in her choice of soul-mates once the pride found out that Jacinda had fallen for a human boy (Will) in the primary books. Well...Karma IS a bitch, isn't it?!
Az and her parents rented a cottage on the lake for the summer in order for Az to begin interacting with humans for the first time and learn how to control her Draki in preparation for her tour the following year. Self-admittedly a little skittish (actually, a lot, initially) around non-Draki folk, little did she realize she would meet someone who really noticed HER. Az had always been considered sort of unremarkable amongst her pride. No boys ever came calling on her--she never stood out with anyone. But she was about to come across someone who found her totally remarkable, beautiful and amazing...and that boy who saw all of this in her was Tate.
There was nothing to not love about Tate. He was charming, gorgeous and an all around GREAT guy! No bad boy in him...but that's ok. He totally suited the 'good guy' persona very well. He seemed genuine and without a lot of baggage (although he had some). There was just enough backstory on him to get a feel for who he was...and he was just perfect and I soooo wanted him and Az to work things out!
I really loved Az's parents too and her relationship with them. As a parent myself, it's hard to cut those strings and let them make their own decisions. I loved how they trusted her and gave her the room she needed to make those decisions that would affect the rest of her life. That says a lot about Az too...that her parents could indeed extend that kind of trust to her without being careless or indifferent about her life.
My only complaint was that I wanted more! I really missed the Draki world once I finished Hidden--this was a great teaser--and I would welcome more stories about our favourite characters because it would seem they are ALL plenty interesting. And I won't be so quick to make up my mind before reading another novella...especially where this series is concerned.

Un libro cliché
Empiezo diciendo que jamás he leído la serie Firelight, porque hacerlo de otra forma no sería justo.
También diré que la sinopsis del libro deja en claro que es una novela individual a la saga, y puede leerse sin conocer los libros principales. Eso es cierto.
Pues bien, como lo menciono al inicio, la historia es totalmente cliché: la adolescente inexperta ycaliente que se enamora del adolescente experto, guapo y musculoso. Eso no es "malo" en un sentido propiamente dicho, pero sobra decir que no gana puntos por originalidad.
Los personajes son totalmente huecos, en todos sentidos posibles. Y, aunque reconozco que al ser una historia corta no podemos exigir una gran evolución, lo cierto es que pudo haberse hecho más. Y es que no se ha hecho ni siquiera lo mínimo para darle un poquito de veracidad a los protagonistas
Finalmente, la escritura de la autora es muy amateur, incluso para ser una historia juvenil. Y ese es el punto de todo el asunto, lo explico: un autor puede tener la historia más cliché, los personajes más cliché, los giros de trama más cliché, y aún así conseguir que el libro sea bueno. ¿Cómo? Con una buena narrativa.
Pero esta autora no la tiene.
Lo Mejor: El libro es fluido, y podemos terminarlo en una tarde...
Lo Peor: … es fluido porque en realidad no tiene nada que contar.

I liked how with this one Az is starting to stretch her wings and how her parents are giving her the space to do that. They are there for her if she needs help, but it seems like they are willing to let her learn from the school of hard knocks too.
The romance between Az and Tate was sweet. I liked that they kept in touch and have hope that they can find more.

A víte co? Novelka z pohledu Azurky se mi líbila víc, jak celá série. Byla to fajn oddychovka. Tate je sympaťák a bylo fajn vidět i tu více rebelskou stránku vodní Drakie. Zdálo se mi totiž, že ve společnosti Jacindy je Az spíše zakřiknutá. Škoda, že to nebylo delší!

Breathless es una historia corta con la que podremos conocer un poquito mejor a uno de los personajes de la trilogía, Az. Además aparecen nuevos personajes como los amigos que conoce en el pueblo, donde Az está pasando un tiempo con sus padres y estos últimos, que no se dan a conocer en la trilogía principal.
"El miedo no será mi guía. Solo seguiré a mi corazón."
Os recomiendo esta breve novela que complementa la trilogía, y que os hará pasar un buen rato🤗

It wasn't bad, it was just average. A typical story of young summer love, with a hint of fantasy/paranormal and not much depth to it. Not my cuppa tbh.
It literally took me less than two hours to read, so if you're into this kind of book you should try it out. Won't take long to read.

Zbožňuju svět drakií! O to víc mě mrzí, že ze série i novely autorka s takovým talentem nedokázala vyždímat víc. :( Ale bylo fajn si její styl a její dílko připomenout. :)

There are a few authors whom I feel can write both adult (romance) books, and YA books flawlessly. As in these few authors are ones I feel like they know how to write hot scenes without them being adult romance kind of scenes. There's nothing wrong with a good adult romance, I just don't enjoy reading those scenes in YA books. You can have an ultra hot YA scene without making it adult, and Sophie Jordan is an author who does that perfectly! Wow can she write HOT! Let me just say, Breathless did in deed leave me feeling Breathless, pun indeed.
I'm a huge fan of Sophie's and was sad to see the Firelight series come to an end this year. It's one of those series I absolutely love, and this novella is a great addition to the series. I loved Az's character from the series, but I enjoyed reading about her own story and her handling a situation she gets herself into. I loved that this story takes place outside the pride, and with her parents. It definitely puts Az in a rather tough place when she inadvertently gets involved with humans. *sigh* Ah Tate. I think Tate might give Will a run for his money, because this boy does not give up when he wants something, and that something is Az.
Without giving anything away, I will say I enjoyed that no matter how much Az fought against pride law, her heart, and her wanting to not get involved, she can't deny what she feels for Tate. Tate himself is not someone who will let Az run away. I liked that Az's parent's played a small, yet important role in a decision she makes. I LOVED that hot character chemistry that Sophie Jordan can write so well. It's F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S! If you're read this series, you HAVE TO GET THIS NOVELLA! My only compliant with it, is it needs to be a book, and not a novella. I wanted more of Az's story.

¡Me encantó este tomo! La verdad es que le tenía muy pocas expectativas porque sabía que cambiaba el narrador y era demasiado cortito. Lo leí porque no me quería perder nada de la saga, pero suponía que iba a ser una especie de re-telling contado desde otra perspectiva. Jamás me imaginé que me iba a gustar tanto, incluso más que el tercer y último libro de la saga. Amé la personalidad y forma de narrar de Azure, la mejor amiga de Jacinda, y me encantó conocer a su Draki interior de agua. Realmente sentí que la perspectiva de Az fue una bocanada de aire fresco porque Jacinda ya me tenía un poco cansada con sus planteos heroicos. Empaticé mucho más con Az y me encantó la trama y la historia de amor que protagonizó. Tate está peligrosamente cerca de Will en el podio de personajes favoritos de la saga y sentí que la relación no fue para nada forzada ni apresurada. Temí que en tan pocas hojas no pudieran conquistarme los personajes, pero es evidente que Sophie es muy buena para hacer que me enamore de sus personajes. Sentí que tuvo un buen cierre aunque me quedé con ganas de más.
En conclusión, si leyeron la saga, NO se pueden perder este tomo que, aunque es cortito, es super adictivo y tiene una trama hermosa.

Esta fue una historia muy dulce y tierna. Me gusto conocer a la enigmatica y la gran amiga de Jacinda, Az. Pero al igual que la novela principal, el romance es demasiado a peimera vista. Es muy interesante y bastante entretenido.

This was cute! It was fun getting to know Az a bit more. I could see this novella being more of a prequel to the original series or an intro/taster of the world of draki. Very fast paced insta love for sure but still sweet and fun to read.

Well... Recuerdo la saga con mucho cariño y me encantó recordar el mundo de los drakis. Me gusta el mundo que la autora creó, los dragones me fascinan.
Sin embargo, años después de haber leído los libros anteriores me puedo dar cuenta que este tipo de historias con romances y dramas adolescentes ya no son para mi.

Reseñado en mi blog Nanny Books
Cuando leí esta saga, hace ya varios años, quedé totalmente encantada por las poderosas drakis, aquellos seres "dragones" capaces de convertirse en humanos a su antojo. Con Breathless volvemos a sumergirnos en ese mundo, en compañía de Az, la mejor amiga de Jacinda, nuestra antigua protagonista.
Az nunca fue una chica que sobresaliera. Siempre se sintió una más del montón. Por eso le resulta extraño que un bello y atlético humano la miré de manera especial. Ambos comparten un profundo y sincero amor por el agua.
Narrada en primera persona, conoceremos a fondo los sentimientos de Az y lograremos simpatizar inmediatamente con ella. Para ser una draki, es muy sencilla y modesta... y jamás ha estado enamorada. Un verano junto al lago y un chico guapo, el argumento es sencillo, pero muy efectivo. Jordan logra envolvernos en este romance prohibido y, aunque tiene un final muy abierto, podemos suspirar de amor a cada instante. Muy ameno, se lee de un tirón en un par de horas.
La novela es muy breve, no llega a las cien páginas, y sin embargo, es muy entretenida y cautivadora. Se separa enormemente de las líneas de la saga principal, y no sabremos nada nuevo acerca de los viejos personajes, pero aún así te engancha nombrándolos de vez en cuando. ¡Vamos Sophie, yo quiero mi historia con Cassian!
Como protagonista, Az es muy simpática y aunque tiene un breve momento de histeria, se lo perdonamos rápido, porque llega a subsanar su error fácilmente. Troy tiene sus momentos intensos, es un buen galán y sabe ser caballero sin ahogarnos de aburrimiento. Los personajes secundarios son casi anecdóticos y bastante clichés.
La relación de amor entre los chicos es casi instantánea, aunque tendrá que pasar por alguna que otra dificultad, para luego llegar a ese final que... ¡pssss, si no fuera por el Epílogo me estaría muriendo de la incertidumbre!
Breathless es un librito sencillo, que lamentablemente solo se encuentra disponible en ebook, que nos salpica un poco del mundo draki y nos hace soñar por un ratito con las aventuras que florecen en verano. Recomendado.

Boy is a state champion swimmer, girl is a dragon shapeshifter whose special power involves a deep connection with water. They have an instant, magical, love-at-first-sight, Romeo and Juliet-esque connection (much like Jacinda and Will from the equally horrible Firelight). Boy knows her for less than a WEEK (and only spends a couple of hours with here within that time frame) and is fully ready to begin a long term relationship with her after she leaves when her vacation is over. Girl's parents are somehow somewhat chill with all of this. Girl, after very little hesitation, AGREES. God.
The worst part of reading Sophie Jordan's books is that she really isn't that bad of a writer. Her general prose is quite natural and well written but when romance, normal teenage issues and general world building come into play, it all goes downhill from there. It's like watching a wave wash away a sand castle you spent an hour building. Disappointing and hella annoying. Why I even read this when I pretty much hated the entire Firelight series is beyond me, but it's been a boring summer so I kinda just said fuck it. I am currently regretting my choice.

She was a little naive when it came to human interaction but her inner confidence held up ok. Az is very loyal to her parents and her pride, which also adds to her integrity.
This story deals with Az on vacation among humans! who we all know from reading the previous books that Az isn't too fond of ...lol....as she gives her friend a good deal of grief for falling for a human! She is there to learn to deal with humans before she has too live among them for a whole year.
Az being a water Draki spends lots of time in the water to blend in like most kids on vacation until a girl hits her head and almost drowns and Az rescues her and meets Tate a gorgeous human boy Az thinks she has no reason to talk to again but cant help herself from seeking out again and again.
This book was amazing! I really really enjoyed it. Sophie Jordan has a way of sucking you right into the story so that it is done before you even realized you started reading it and makes it so real that you are sure by the end that Draki do exist. I really hope she continues to write more in the series and i cant wait to see how the series is portrayed on film!

This was ok, I guess. Everyone else seems to love it. I liked Az, she seems different enough from Jacinda that I didn't feel like I was reading about the same person, which is generally how I feel when I read these spin offs. Usually there is no difference between the characters and it seems pointless.
I was surprised that this takes place before Firelight, and since that is not explicitly pointed out in the beginning, I was kind of confused. And really, if this takes place before Firelight, it doesn't really make any sense. Because I've read Firelight and Az acts completely judgmental and offended at Jacinda regarding her feelings/actions towards Will. When apparently, she should be the most understanding person Jacinda could talk to.
And what's up with all the draki girls getting all hot and heavy within three seconds of meeting human boys? I mean, I remember being 15 or 16 or whatever, but jeez. So, I dunno. I wasn't overly impressed, but it is just a novella. And Az is interesting, so it's worth a shot. Maybe I'll give it 2.5 stars.

I liked seeing another character's POV. Problem was that, and maybe I'm wrong, but this seems to take place BEFORE Firelight, not after it, which ruins all the continuity because in the original series, Az hasn't met and fallen for a human boy. If this does in fact take place AFTER, then it still is weird because wouldn't they not be as afraid of humans after meeting Will and everything? So that really ruined this for me. Also, I just didn't feel like they really like each other enough to be that into things because it felt like it was only about attraction, not love. Maybe it's because, as a short novella, the author just didn't really get into the characters to make me feel what they felt.
Another thing that drove me crazy was how unoriginal and cliche this felt. The descriptions were what I've read in a billion other books, as were the characters and their backstories. And then who seriously yells out every person's name in their group just so the main character can learn their names?

I've never really picked these books up, though they get recommended to me constantly because everyone who knows me knows that dragons are my thing. But these books just seemed like any other generic YA setup but this time, there's dragons! And I'm not here for that. But after reading this, I see I may have been a little too quick to judge. The unabashed insta-love in this was laughable but most books I've read as of late that haven't been able to make me care about the characters in over 400 pages. This book managed to make me do that in what, 84? I really like Azure's voice and the writing style, in general. I feel like I may need to reconsider my stance on this series.

This novella took my breath away. I believe it takes place before the Firelight series. The writing draws me right in and I was taken by Az, her water Draki and Tate. If you can keep in mind that this story has nothing to do with Jacinda, takes place somewhere else, with a different set of characters, I believe you will thoroughly enjoy this book.

No aporta nada a la trilogía, no es para nada indispensable, de todas maneras se disfruta.
El romance prohibido es lo único en lo que se basa el libro, lo que lo hace simple. Me agradó su relación, pero ella parecía más encantada en el hecho de que alguien se fijara en ella, que en quién se estaba fijando.
Es entretenido, pero nada más.

This is actually a 2.5 for one reason only. INSTA-LOVE. I hate hate hate it! UGH! This is a novella. Limiting amount of pages. And somehow, the main character decides she's madly in love with this guy! I mean, basically everything else was awesome but I just can't get past the insta-love!
