i really liked the breadth of material covered in this book and the author's approach to a capsule wardrobe (longevity > trends, invest in quality, play around with rules, all body types are welcome), but a lot of the material felt surface level and left me wanting more. the biggest value i got from this book was the itemized list of capsule wardrobe basics, the end-of-chapter reflection questions, and the list of questions to ask yourself before buying a new garment.
also, a nitpick, but the author's style manifesto template is quite long-winded, and i think choosing only 3 adjectives would be simpler and more concise. (her exact manifesto template so you get what i mean: _ and _with a touch of _ to give a _ feel that is _and _)
~about that surface level criticism~ some of the chapters felt too short to really delve into the topics at hand and get into the nitty gritty. most of them consist of the author's opinion on the chapter's topic (like fashion rules, tweaking outfits, balance/proportions), then some examples of what she means or a few tips, next chapter, rinse and repeat. i would've liked to see a more structured approach to chapters that assumes the reader wants a more in depth break down of the concepts and will refer back to the book over time.
ex: give us lists of items you recommend pairing together to give good balance/structure or a list of color pairings that go together well for inspiration, not just a few illustrated examples.
areas where i would've particularly appreciated more depth:
- when choosing a material, what fabric types are best for what properties? (coolness, waterproofing, anti-piling, warmth, draping, anti-wrinkle, breathability etc.). she says it will depend on what the wearer is looking for, but she doesn't provide any guidance here on how to choose.
- deciphering care symbols on garments, like for laundering. this is usually covered in textile courses.
- what accessories does she recommend for a capsule wardrobe? i was hoping for a list similar to the one in her "basics" chapter.
