George Lawson (1749-1820) was for forty-nine years the minister of the Scottish Succession church in Selkirk. He became renowned as a writer alongside his preaching, producing commentaries on Ruth, Esther, the lives of David and Joseph, together with this commentary on Proverbs.

The pastoral warmth of Lawson is very evident in this commentary. Passages with evangelistic potential are given attention but its great value lies in the wealth of practical comment aimed at Christian believers. It is readable, not being an overly technical treatment of Proverbs, but with material to furnish preachers with much food for thought.

If it has a weakness it is that Lawson does not always see the ways in which the proverbs are grouped; this leads to comment based on the most obvious thrust of a passage. Repeated proverbs therefore become reiterations of earlier points rather than having something unique to say within a new context.

First published shortly after his death in 1821, this edition has been completely re-typeset for issue as an eBook and has links at the head of each chapter to quickly find the comments on any particular verse in the book.
