Excerpt: I STOOD THERE LIKE an idiot and let it happen. It was as if he knew, as if he were there in the room with us. She and I were in the living room, ready to go, almost out the door. The phone rang. It was for Margie. She left my side to take the call. "It's her ex-boyfriend," someone said. I watched the color drain from her face. I should have taken the phone from her and hung it up; but I didn't know any better, I was a nice guy then. So I stood there and let it happen.
