What’s a rose when compared to the flowering of real love?
It’s Valentine’s Day, the busiest day of the year for Christopher, mild-mannered owner of Petals to the Metal, the florist shop on the dangerous side of the city’s tracks. With a mountain of deliveries to make and no sign of his casual driver, Christopher knows he is about to die when a loud motorbike pulls up outside and a behemoth of man, heavily tattooed and muscled like a steroid freak, strides through the entrance. Will Christopher die by bullet, knife, or beating? When the stranger turns on the charm, Christopher realizes he may actually die of desire.
Naughty or nice? Sugar or Spice? Whatever way you like it, Barry Lowe writes M/M Romance and Erotica that’s as addictive and satisfying as your morning cup of coffee. If you like it short and sweet with a happy ending then saucy romance is for you. But if you like a stronger brew with fetish, cuckold relationships, taboo, and all things steamy then try the Erotica – but watch out for the heat!
The premise of the story was very cute. Christopher owns a flower shop, and it is Valentine's Day, one of the busiest days for the shop, but Christopher's delivery driver had not shown up, leaving him in the lurch. Then, a man wearing only leather pants, covered in tattoos and piercings, and who resembles a mountain shows up, says his name is Ryder, and that he was sent by the employment agency to help with deliveries. Christopher, at first glance, thinks he is being robbed or going to be possibly murdered until Ryder assures him that he will do no such thing. After helping out, they agree to go on a date. Later, Ryder says that Christopher is exactly who he has been looking for in his life and that he thinks they belong together.
Which brings us to the first problem I had with this book. The insta-love in this one was a bit ridiculous. These two barely know each other and based on just a few days' worth of interaction, they know they are meant to be and will just get to know each other along the way?
Also, I really did not like Christopher, one of the MCs and the narrator. He was shallow and quick to judge others, which made me really not care for him, and I did not see at all what attracted Ryder to him. Ryder was a great MC: he was very outgoing, charming, and fun. But Christopher not so much, and I just did not believe in the attraction between these two at all.
This is a fun and very sweet Valentine's Day offering from Barry Lowe. The main character who tells the story is full of assumptions and fear (not that I can blame him after what he's been through!) but he tells it with such a sense of humor that some of his observations and comments made me laugh. The stranger who should be totally fearsome is actually really charming, and the romance that develops is as sweet as it seems unlikely. 'He Won't Send Roses' is one of the most romantic and charming Valentine's stories I have read in a while, delighting me with its charm and a heat level that was just right.
Christopher grew up knowing he'd have to run as soon as his father found out he is gay. When it happens, it still isn’t easy for him. But at least he knows where he is going: Uncle Ben is "just like him", so he figures he should give it a try. Years later, after he inherits his uncle's shop in a rough area of the city, he is confronted with an extremely rough looking delivery man and thinks his life has ended. Christopher has learned to expect the worst, but this one time, he is most definitely wrong.
Ryder, who looks like a biker, ends up helping Christopher out on one of the busiest days of the year for a florist. He is very good with the customers, but that isn’t the only surprise he has to offer. I loved discovering layer after layer of what kind of a man Ryder is, and as for the cute twist at the end? Absolutely brilliant! I laughed out loud and am still smiling.
If you like stories about men who have a haunted past yet manage to build a life for themselves, if you enjoy watching assumptions crumble before a deeper and very human truth, and if you're looking for a Valentine's story that is as sweet as it is funny and hot, then you will probably like this Valentine's short story.
Barry is known for writing raunchy erotica, but every now and then he produces a fabulous tale right from the heart. Still lots of erotic tension but a definite loving HEA. This is one of his best.
What a very sweet and funny Valentine's story. Poor Christopher has such a shitty upbringing, his mom never showers him with affection or stands up for him and his dad is a down right asshole. I hate the wholly roller types that treat their gay kids like abominations, such a load of horse shit! Christopher goes to live with his Uncle Ben, who is a loving man in all the ways that Christopher craves as a child, he is Christophers father, mother, brother, and friend. Christopher is running Bens flower shop and makes it more profitable than in the past and is content to live his life like that, only missing out on the deeper connection with another man. Then Ryder enters the shop and everything in Christopers life changes, for the better. Love the story, but wish it were longer. Loved the ending also!
Very predictable read but still very entertaining. I enjoyed see Christopher interact with Ryder and finding out who Ryder really was and what connections he had with another minor character.
I did feel a bit embarrassed for reaction Christopher had when he first laid eyes on Ryder.
