Since I've finish the second season of the anime yesterday (and what an ending that was!), I finally decided to continue reading the manga, 'cause there is no possible way I'll be able to wait a whole year for season 3.
Just like the first volume, I really enjoyed this one. There was a lot of scenes here that weren't in the anime, so it was interesting and fun to read. Also it was interesting to find out more stuff about ghouls. The characters are amazing, and artwork is really good. Can't wait to continue on with the series.
Definitely better written and more developed than the first volume. I think the storyline involving Kaneki's relationship with both sides and showing that humans and ghouls have a shared interest in staying alive is such a strong point for this series. It's way more difficult to condemn something because it's acting according to its nature and not just killing for fun or sport.
I'm really starting to like Touka too - and completely unrelated, she kind of reminds me of The Lost Girl from the Rot & Ruin series, especially when she threatens to kill somebody.
Now I really don't regret giving this a second chance!
I swear I want to put some sense into Ken. He seriously need to understand he's not only a human anymore. That'd do him some good. I love how we can see being a ghoul doesn't mean being entirely bad - though people think so. It's more black and white : some ghouls kill to feed, some don't; some ghouls like humans, some don't . . . they're not the same. Definitely interested to see what's gonna happen next with the inspectors!
It’s nice seeing the difference between the manga and the anime. Things are definitely becoming more fleshed (excuse the pun) out. Also beautiful artwork. These covers are so well done and interesting.
Shy Ken Kaneki is thrilled to go on a date with the beautiful Rize. But it turns out that she’s only interested in his body—eating it, that is. When a morally questionable rescue transforms him into the first half-human half-Ghoul hybrid, Ken is drawn into the dark and violent world of Ghouls, which exists alongside our own.
I LOVE the cover of this volume of Tokyo Ghoul vol 2 - it is so freaking gorgeous! I wish all character covers were so pretty... and the fact Touka is a ghoul is pretty ironic considering. We meet Yomo, a new character who introduces to Ken what Anteiku does so that peaceful ghouls can eat without killing anyone. I love when character design works so well to make us understand a character. The masks make this feel a lot more horrorish than the previous volume too. I also found the ghoul investigators more horrifying in their character designs. You can tell from the art that some are monsters worse than ghouls and that others are doing a duty, a job. Overall the art suits the manga very well independently of the battle frames.
The story settles Ken more into his life as a ghoul and he works for Anteiku... they teach him how to eat human food, something he needs to practice now. We are introduces to the ghoul investigators, the ones from this ward and ones from corporate. Ken sees them in action when a couple of peaceful ghouls are located in their ward. It's pretty brutal and you see that the doves, the investigators are the enemies of the ghouls. Ken has to consider what part he is going to play now that he straddles both the human and the ghoul worlds. This attack pretty much decides him as he witnesses the rules of Anteiku in action and sees how torn up Touka is by the situation.
I really love how Touka teaches Ken through comparison. Her reactions to everything is from the POV of a ghoul, and they contrast Ken's POV as an ex-human. We see that she feels just as keenly to lose someone she knows. That she feels impotent and must act despite the consequences. It really builds sympathy in Ken but also the reader as we consider that the monsters on the other side might just be trying to survive as well and feel as strongly as a human does. To that end I like that neither the ghoul or the human side is positioned as the villains of the Tokyo Ghoul series. No there are good and bad on both sides.
I was startled at how tense and caught up in the story I am... normally at vol 2 the mangaka is still setting up the story and hasn't had enough time to totally suck us into the story yet. With Tokyo Ghoul vol 2 I feel like I was already totally captured by vol 1 and Ken Kaneki's oh so personal journey. I think we really get to see the ghouls through Ken's eyes... this is a world he HAS to be a part of, he wasn't given a choice but that is how it is. He is willing to try to understand ghouls and that makes it all so much more compelling as we can see the logic in his conclusions free of the fear of being one of their victims.
I'm surprised to be saying this but I will be continuing to read the series after Tokyo Ghoul vol 2. I want to get the full sense of Ken and see how he grows into being a ghoul and what humanity he retains in such a brutal and harsh world. To say this is an epic journey is to look forward to the journey the Tokyo Ghoul series just very barely reveals in the first two volumes!

🖤Generally, I love the idea that there’s no bad guys; it’s only people that do what they think is right. You just can’t blame anyone (unless it’s Mado— this guy... he’s pure evil. I wonder what’s his story... no one with their right mind would be so cruel).
After the events of last volume Kankei is trying to figure out what to do. He learns to balance his life as a ghoul and pretend to be human he must master that. He also learns what the Ghouls in this section of the city do to protect themselves and not have the government hunt them. This volume really focuses on the bigger world building parts and giving some in-look on how it all works. There's also a major death that helps build up character in new ways and give them a reason to fear or love them.
Good: The art is working out better now and the fights are looking cleaner. This volume also contains good plot advancements for the overall picture and really loving the investigation team Doves and how they work. A good villain to the ghouls. Also my girl is always kicking ass and has a great fight scene here.
Bad: It's a slower building chapter with lots of parts so it feels like Kankei doesn't grow much. I know this happens later (Due to watching the anime) but I can see people getting frustrated with his views on the world.
Overall another really great volume. My favorite part of Tokyo Ghoul has always been the world and it's interesting section break up and outlook on Ghouls and Humans and how different we are yet so alike. A 3.5 out of 5.
This second volume was even better than the first, and that's saying something! The art is still more than amazing, and we're getting to know all the characters better. (Can I just say how much I love Touka? Yes, she may be bloodthirsty and vengeful, but that's what makes her so great, isn't it?) There was also some extra content that we didn't get to see in the anime, which made me really excited, and now we've also met my lovely Uta with his mildly terrifying eyes, and my n.1 nemesis, aka Mado-san. *cracks knuckles* On to the next one I go!
2024 review: the introduction of the mask, the gore, the investigators (who after reading death note, remind me of L and his team), and the moral dillemmas of Kaneki. chef's kiss.
This is getting better and better. I love the art style! some mangas have awesome storyline but an art style that's hard to get into, but this one is amazing. This volume goes deeper into the "Ghoul" community and their laws, and we begin to see how the "Ghoul Department" at the police are hunting them. The dilemma Kaneki lives, I've lived it with him, he doesn't know what to feel towards Ghouls. They eat humans, but they still have feelings and some of them have grown closer to him. I love to see the struggle he goes through coping with his situation, and the pace is well-done.
Soprattutto, Ken e Touka. Secondo me è geniale questo manga.
A me il terzo ^^
I'm rapidly falling in love with this series and the art style
It's only a couple of hours later and I feel like I need to up my previous rating from 4.25 to at least 4.5 because I can't stop thinking about everything that happened in thos volume and drove the story and plot forwards. This was too good to just be a four star read - both regarding my enjoyment the objective content. I'm so into this series and I'm more than glad I already borrowed the next 5 or 6 volumes from the library so I can binge read them...!!
Since I've already seen the anime I know what happens and I can follow the story easily and it's a quick read. I'm loving it all so far, since I know that Kaneki's character development is slow-paced but so amazing. So far, it hasn't let me down. There isn't that much action yet, but rather getting to know the characters. I don't mind, since I think it's such a cool world.
With the start of what is sure to be a constant moral conundrum, this volume delved deeper into the world of Tokyo’s ghouls, exploring not only how they operated, but also the conflicts and dangers they faced.
This volume skilfully turned the tables, going quite a ways towards humanising ghouls and dehumanising humans through the inclusion of the new characters: the government agents, aka the doves. Interestingly, despite the doves’ hypocritical stance on justice and having no qualms about killing ghouls that are technically children, the manga didn’t shy away from exploring this or attempt to do it half-heartedly, instead it gave the main investigator, Amon, a solid and relevant motivation for his actions. This was confusing to say the least as that meant there wasn’t a clear antagonist, but that also worked in this vol’s favour because it really makes the reader think and engage with the content.
The art was much the same as Tokyo Ghoul, Vol. 1—that is to say, pretty good—and, noticeably, the action art was slightly more readable this time, so there was some improvement on that front.
The character progression was stark and it went hand in hand with the plot’s fast pacing. The protagonist, Kaneki, became bolder by the end and, though it was sad to see him constantly beaten down by all he witnessed in this vol, it was nothing new as it seems, judging by the previous vol too, that the trend for this manga is for him to endure horrible things happening around him. Well, he is a human-turned-ghoul, after all, so miserableness seems par for the course!

I was finally able to pick up the second volume of Tokyo Ghoul! I just got back from vacation about a week ago and during that vacation, i read absolutely nothing. I've been trying to get back into the reading groove and I've decided to jump back in slowly with some manga! I've wanted to get into this series for a while now and I read the first volume a little earlier this year! Now I need to pick up the third one ASAP. I'm still waiting for big things to happen, but I can feel this story is going to pick up the pace soon!
It gets more Dark and Emotional at the same time. In this volume we get to see how ghouls shares emotions like humans too. They also wants to protect their loved ones, want to get revenge when their loved ones get killed by the ghoul investigators.
But for me it's a little difficult to relate the ghouls to human. Even if they share our emotions. They eat us. Can you imagine? How can we feel something for them when all they want to do is eat us. I mean if a human isn't allowed to eat meat, they can still survive on vegetables but for the ghouls they can eat nothing but Us in order to be alive. Ughhhh.
And Kaneki is still figuring out how to eat. Untill now he still hasn't eaten any human meat, which is pretty amazing. Don't know how he can keep it up after all. I really feel sad for him💔 [image error]
Like vol. 1 this was so good. One of the things I loved most about this volume is that we are discovering a lot more about ghouls. We get to meet more characters who are just as intriguing as the characters seen in the first book. Also, I liked that this book has a darker concept, and I can’t wait to see that continue because it makes the story thrilling. I also liked the storyline still had Kaneki’s struggle with both his human and ghoul side. I also loved seeing more of Touka especially since her POV is so different. And the art in this series is so beautiful just like the covers.
Liked this even more than the first one. Kaneki is finally realizing how everything is not always black and white and not every Ghoul is a monster. This volume shows how they are creatures with feelings and capable of love
