Salvation

You get to the point where you can just say it. There was never anything special about me, except my father is rich and important. That's why it happened.

It was just a normal Tuesday afternoon. I was twenty-three and thinking about my new designer boots. They kidnapped me for ransom. They raped me before I was rescued. My therapist says that talking about it means I'm starting to heal.

I don't really think I am.

It's even harder to talk about Gideon. He couldn’t save me when it really mattered, so he keeps trying to save me now. He refuses to give up on me, and I can’t make him understand. There are some things you just can’t be saved from.

Salvation is a love story that follows a difficult path of healing after sexual assault. It is a true romance, but it addresses very hard issues, including rape and attempted suicide. The novel is not, however, about captivity and violence. It is about love, healing, and hope.

This is an emotional and raw exploration of trauma, slow healing, and love in the aftermath of sexual assault.

While the book deals with heavy topics, including rape and attempted suicide, it is ultimately a story about survival and the devotion of a man who refuses to let her suffer alone.
I want you to heal. Baby, I want you to heal a little more every day. But it’s not because I think you need to be better or different. It’s because I want you to keep remembering who you already are. Not the distorted version of yourself in your mind. I want you to see what I see. Because that’s really you.”

This is not an easy read, but it’s a deeply emotional one. It doesn’t offer a neat resolution or a miraculous transformation, it offers something more authentic. It’s a story about love and about the difficult, messy path to healing.

* Thank you Claire, for bringing this story to my attention.

Different than any other Noelle Adams book.

Usually her books do not deal with very traumatic experiences.

I mean, yes, she does tackle a lot of important topics and introduces some angst in her novels that way, but never in terms of trauma and abuse (in all its forms), so this was new.

I thought it was done very well in my opinion.

Recovery is not a straight line, but a jumbled mess of a trajectory and there are ups and downs and sometimes it all feels futile while other times the will to overcome the past gets stronger than the nightmares (which she had a lot of)

It wasn’t a pleasant read but it wasn’t extremely heavy either, mostly because it dealt with the “after”.

It could definitely be triggering for some so I’d recommend this with caution. It wasn’t dark but it was realistic and maybe sometimes that can be more triggering.

The world isn't the one I used to think it was, where the hero rides in to save the day at the very last minute. It's so much harder and deeper and uglier and more beautiful than that. Because the truth is just this - sometimes no one can save us, but salvation might come anyway.

"Salvation" was the truest, most authentic Noelle Adam's book I've read so far. Going into it I didn't know what to expect. Taking into consideration the previous books I've read I was prepared for something shallow, only scratching the surface on the trauma, and intensified on the romance part. But I was wrong. The whole book could be a theatrical monologue, since it's build only through the heroine's POV, but it was so colorful and emotional and deep, and every thought and action justified and well planned. It is obvious that the author did a lot of research for the plot and the heroine's emotions and what she went through after the . But it also exploits the struggles of the people near the victim that often can't push through the trauma to offer their support.
And as the blurb is accurately stating: The novel is not about captivity and violence. It is about love, healing, and hope.
If there's ever only one book you'll read from this author, then it should be this one. I know it has a dark theme but in my opinion it's her best work.

5 Saving Stars!!!

I finished this week over a week ago, and I am STILL thinking about it. I really loved it and I don't think I rated it highly enough. Sooo, I am 5 staring this bitch...it deserves it!!

4.5 Saving Stars!!!

This book was pretty awesome! I don't know what I was expecting because I (sadly) was not familiar with this author previously. It's a fairly dark, very gripping story of a girl overcoming serious abuse and the depression that followed, and the man who failed to to save her the one time it mattered most.

From the moment this book began, it snatched me. Diana is a young, innocent, twenty-something year old girl, who is just minding her own business one day when she gets grabbed by a couple of men and thrown in the trunk of a car. Unbeknownst to her at the time, but she is being kidnapped for ransom. Her father is a powerful executive that the kidnappers are seeking money from. She ends up locked up in a room with Gideon, an undercover FBI agent who's cover has just been blown by the Albanian gang that they are both being held captive by. These two form an instant connection in the face of fear and the will to survive. Diana instinctually feels like Gideon is someone that she can trust. Their bond is quickly shattered though, when three of the kidnappers burst into the room with full intent to hurt Diana. Gideon fights to protect her, but fails, and the outcome will mark Diana's life forever.

Castings:

 photo imagejpg1_zpsb806d96b.jpg

When I first started reading this book, I had to go back and read the blurb again, because I was thinking, did I miss that this is a captivity story? It starts out that way, but it really isn't. It's about mainly Diana, but Gideon as well, overcoming the things that happened to them while in captivity.

This book reminded me a lot of Fading by E.K. Blair in some ways. So, yes, there is rape involved along with several other dark themes. Diana's struggle to overcome the things that happened to her is a very difficult one, and one that she doesn't believe that she has any hope of succeeding in.

Re-enter Gideon Walker. OMG, ladies!!! Gideon is what takes this book from good, to great, for me! This man now permanently resides on my "hero" as well as on my "book boyfriend" shelves. I LOOOOVVVEEEDDD Gideon!! Not only is he a hot as HELL FBI agent, but he has a heart of gold, and the way that he is with Diana just melted my heart!!! Gideon is struggling too. He is carrying around a gigantic amount of guilt over his idea that he failed Diana in protecting her. As a result, he has vowed to himself to protect her from here on out, no matter what. Diana thinks that she is just a "project" to Gideon and that once he fixes her up, that he will be on his way. But we as the reader can see how wrong this is, and just how far his depth of feeling goes for her.

"I can't leave you alone, Diana. I failed you once, and I'm not going to fail you again."

"When I look at you, I'm not seeing someone who's broken and who needs to be fixed. I see someone who is so good and so beautiful and so much stronger than she's ever believed. She's been through hell and still found her way back." - Gideon

It was so heartbreaking to be in Diana's head through all of this. She feels disgusting to the point that she can't even stand the sight of herself and is continuously trying to punish herself because she feels that this is what she deserves. She will not allow the notion of any kind of happiness or future beyond this world of pain into her head. She just wants it all to stop. She feels 500 pounds of pain, disgust, self-loathing, and fear on a daily basis.

 photo SalvationTeaser_zps2a614cfe.jpg

Following the captivity scenes in the beginning, this is really a story about overcoming abuse and healing. It's a love story as well, of course. :) There was no outside drama or contributors pulling these two apart. In fact, they spend the majority of the book "together," first as friends, and then later...well, I won't go into all that and spoil anything.

I loved Diana. She is a strong heroine who broke my heart. Her depression is so deep and I really FELT it to my core... like, you really get it. And for every step back that she took, Gideon was there to try to help her take a step forward.

This is just a beautiful story!! I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did. There is some definite swoony steam as well...trust me, but it is a slow burn in getting there, understandably so. Just know that when the story gets there, my heart was being squeezed almost to the point of bursting!!

This is a quick read which some people will appreciate. I personally thought there was about 100 more pages of story in there to be told. But I like a nice, long book personally. I would've liked to have seen a few things expanded on further like But all in all, this was a great book that I will be recommending to others. Definitely not an easy read and at times, it will rip you apart, but it is SO WORTH IT!!

Again, I had never read Noelle Adams' work previous to this book, but I was very impressed with her writing style. This book reads more like a journal at times which I kinda liked. It made me feel closer to the Diana, I think. I would've loved to have had Gideon's POV as well, just as a bonus, but the story did well without it.

I just love stories of heroism and if you do too, I really think that you will enjoy this one! My overlying thought the whole time I was reading this book was that it seriously deserves more recognition!

This is unlike anything else I’ve ever read. It deals with a serious, dark topic that many may choose to avoid. It’s raw and it’s real and I was captivated by Diana and the honesty that is her story.

I have to admit, while I read this book I wondered if this wasn’t based on this author’s own experiences. That’s how very realistic and in touch this story is. To learn that it was not her own story but that of other women, made my respect for Ms. Adams’ talent escalate to untold heights.

I seriously have to remind myself that Diana is not a real character. Her story is written in such a way that I feel as if she is alive and well, walking and talking and living her life after all the struggles she faced.

I did not connect completely with Gideon, which is unusual for me with this author’s heroes. However, I believe I would not have had as strong of a reaction to Diana had I been allowed into Gideon’s thoughts. That doesn’t mean I didn’t absolutely love Gideon, because there is no doubt that he was there for her all along the way, even in the worst of times. The event that changed Diana also changed him and I hurt for the struggles he had regarding his own issues as well as those he had regarding Diana.

I can’t express how much this book affected me. It opened my eyes in a way that other, darker, more sinister books on this topic have not. My first book by Ms. Adams was Listed, and it has remained with me for years. Salvation will definitely be taking up residence beside it.

An emotional roller coaster.
This book was gritty, raw and beautiful. It was realistic and at times difficult to read because of the hard topic. But I’m glad I read it.

Gideon Walker, the man you are!
And Dianna is a true warrior.

Raw and emotional are the words that come to mind when I think of this book. Diana's journey is such a rollercoaster ride of emotions. I find the best writers to be the ones that can make you feel everything the characters are going through and Noelle Adams made that happen for me with Salvation. This book is now sitting on my favorites shelf.

The story starts right from the first page.....Diana is walking down a city street when she's grabbed by two men and thrown into a trunk. She ends up locked in a room with Gideon, an undercover FBI agent that has been compromised. Fear and the will to survive leads to an instant connection. When three of the kidnappers burst in to the room to take Diana, Gideon tries to fight them off but he's unable to. Diana is raped by several of the bad men. Thankfully, they are rescued before any further damage can be inflicted on either one of them.
"Sometimes the strongest thing you can do is survive."
Naturally Diana falls into a state of depression and can't cope. At one point she attempts to take her own life. Gideon is insistent on spending time with her because of the connection he feels and wants to help her get back on track. She feels like she can't be the girl she was before the attack, a girl who loved shoes, enjoyed her job, had sex and dated. So many things trigger that horrible day and unleash the demons in her head. Gideon is extremely patient and supportive, not to mention sexy, and I found it impossible not to fall for him. It truly broke my heart when Diana pushed him away, even into the arms of other women, before realizing she deserves to be happy. Gideon helps her see herself the way he does, as a strong, brave and beautiful woman. What an amazing story about love and healing.

This is my first book from this author’s Noelle Adams pen name, but I’ve read a lot of books under her Claire Kent pen name. It's a well done and emotional "trauma recovery" romance, but it's not for everyone - it's not a pleasant read, and it's got topics not everyone can read about.

Diana (23) randomly gets kidnapped by Albanian mobsters one day. She lives a normal life and isn’t involved in that world, but her estranged father is, so it's his fault this happened. While she’s being held in a basement, she meets Gideon (he’s like 28 or 29), an FBI agent who had been undercover. The mobsters rape her and Gideon tries and fails to save her. (The rape is shown on the page but the details are vague, it's not that explicit). The rest of the book is her recovering from her ordeal, Gideon slowly bonding with her and becoming part of her life, and eventually them getting together.

There’s a lot of hurt / comfort vibes, and Gideon is a dreamy hero. This reminded me of Still Beating a little bit, in the sense that the couple goes through a harrowing ordeal together, and then they recover together – and, this book isn’t afraid to dig into the ugliness of the recovery. They don’t get together fast, Diana has setbacks, she pushes Gideon away a lot. The story digs into her poor mental health. It almost gets to feel like too much for a romance novel - Diana's behavior is realistic, but she did frustrate me at times with how hard she pushed him away. But it feels very realistic for someone recovering from the ordeal she went through. It’s an emotionally heavy book, but the romance is tender and supportive. If you like the kind of scenes where they fall asleep on the phone with each other, this is your book. This also does a good job of showing us their mundane conversations without making them boring. And, doing a mixture of showing them on the page and telling us "we had dinner and talked." A good book alternates showing and telling, but a lot of romances don't get that balance right. This nails the right balance.

Similar to this author’s Claire Kent books, this has a close focus on the couple. Side characters aren’t given much development. Like, if you want Diana to have a reckoning with her father (since it was his fault she got kidnapped), you'll be disappointed. There's no follow through on that, her father doesn't even appear on the page. Normally I might complain about that, but this author makes it work. She’s good at dropping you into the story and getting the action started immediately with minimal build-up - but her writing is efficient, so it doesn't need more. And her stories have no extra frills or unnecessary padding outside of the close focus on the couple and the romance.

It’s also single POV, heroine-only. I like that. Too many books are dual POV just because everyone else is doing that, not because it truly suits the story. I like trying to guess what the hero is thinking and feeling, along with the heroine. In this book, the lack of POV from Gideon meant that I sort of agreed with Diana when she thought he was helping her out of guilt, and she was just his project and he felt the need to fix her. Part of me wanted his POV so that I could understand why he kept returning to her if it wasn’t out of guilt – but, it’s also part of the journey of this book to figure out his true feelings. This was a well done and powerful read, but not a good one if you're in the mood for "light."

This was a hard book to review as the story covers such a sensitive and heartbreaking subject. I struggled to finish it and nearly stopped reading by 70% but didn't want to write a review without giving the author and subject the respect they deserve however, no matter how well written or researched I thought this book was, I just couldn't get myself to be onboard with the protagonist Dianna.

I understand that she went through an unthinkable ordeal and at the beginning, I even admired her and liked/understood her thought processes along with the way she tried to cope after that horrible incident. I actually never disliked her per say, but I did tire of the constant wallowing and endless (and at times self-harming) mind games she played with the H Gideon (whether unknowingly or not). I am aware that everyone's coping mechanism works differently. I am also aware that going into this book wasn't going to be a light stroll in the park however, after reading other much darker, disturbing stories about the same topic matter, I have learnt that I prefer my heroines a bit more considerate, with a little more substance. I would rather not have to go through 70% of a book with the heroine consciously or unconsciously mind effing with the hero so selfishly (with her attraction to him and need for him to be around - but demands for him date others - but gets jealous when he dates, but tells him she can't be with any man - but goes to a club after seeing him on a date and gets with a random in a back alley because she's jealous) - and the list goes on. I totally understand the constant pity party and fickle indecisions but it did get pretty repetitive and irritating after 80-90% of the book. The H was so patient and genuine but that just irritated me even more because I struggled to understand how his feelings developed deeper than just guilt or unconditional friendship. Without Gideon's POV or enough protagonist character development (outside of her inner struggles), I found that I started to slowly disengage from both characters and the storyline due to my growing irritation towards Dianna. To me, it just seemed like a never ending repetition of Dianna's pity party and at times; fickle reactions.

Not to take away from the author's talent, I absolutely admired the backbone and heart that she had to research and write such a conceptually heavy and well intended story. I just wished there were more relatable qualities, dialogue or even background story of the h & H for me to relate or connect further than I did. I definitely give the author props for her realistic ending in the last 10-15% of the book, where she shows us that although the heroine found her HEA, she will still face inner battles and it's not as cut & dry to move on as we'd all like to believe. The stars for this review is low because personally, I just couldn't bond with the book or characters. This has no reflection on the admiration I have for the author or other people that have endured such painful situations.

I used to like books and movies where the hero rides in to save the day.

Sure, the stories were usually romanticized and over-the-top, but they still felt real to me. The world needs saving, but justice and sacrifice really mean something. The person who lives them out should be able to make a difference in the world.

I stopped believing any of that on Tuesdsay, March 11 at about four o'clock in the afternoon...

Salvation by Noelle Adams was an intense, emotional story that details a young woman’s struggle after being brutally raped. While I was immediately drawn in by the blurb, I hesitated to start the book because of the difficult subject matter. I tend to shy away from some of the more emotional reads but decided to give this one a try and am glad I did.

We tell ourselves stories-over and over again- about how help comes just in the nick of time, about how we get saved at the very last moment, about how the bomb is defused with only a few seconds left on the timer. I was still scared, but something inside me believed that would be my story too.

This was bad. It was really, really bad. But I would still somehow be okay.

While I don’t want to give too much away in my review, I do want to say that while the issue of sexual abuse/rape is never easy to read about, the author did not spend a lot of time on the actual rape, there are no graphic details, etc. The sexual assault happens very early on in the book and my initial thought was that the author missed an opportunity by not spending more time on the actual “event”. As difficult as it would have been to read about, I thought by not giving more details about the actual experience the heroine goes through, the reader misses out on what should have been the most intense moments in the story. As I continued to read though the story became less about the actual rape and more about the journey the heroine, Diana, must take to learn to live after her attack and the relationship she has with FBI Agent, Gideon.

The many struggles Diana goes through are heartbreaking, the nightmares and desire to self harm...The struggle she has to discover and understand who she is after the rape compared to who she was before was very well done.

In your mind, is the Diana who was raped the Diana you used to be or the Diana you are now?

I had no idea how to answer that....

While I felt for Diana the whole story, I have to admit the real star of this book for me was Gideon. I throw the term “hero” around a lot in the reviews I do but Gideon is a true hero, in every way. His steadfast devotion, his desire to protect and care for Diana, his loyalty and patience make him the ultimate hero. I absolutely loved him and admired his actions, from beginning to end. Ultimate book boyfriend, right here!

Salvation is a stand-alone novel and is told from Diana’s point of view. At times it read almost like a diary. While I would have loved some of the book to have been from Gideon's perspective, I thought the POV worked as it was written. This is my first book by Noelle Adams and I despite the difficult story line, I enjoyed it and will definitely read more from this author.

4.5 healing stars.

Diana is a normal girl living in the city, working at an ideal job and enjoying her life. There is nothing really all that special about her, nothing that would make her a target, well except that her father has a lot of money and ticked off the wrong people. That is why Diana finds herself being kidnapped and thrown in the trunk of a car and taken to a house filled with an Albanian gang. She is thrown into a room to wait when she finds she is not alone in that room.

Gideon is an undercover FBI agent who has been working to bring down this gang when his cover was blown and now he is waiting to be killed. The last thing he expected was to have a scared innocent woman thrown into the room with him. Gideon vows to protect her in any way he can and he does try, but when he is only one man against many the outcome is doomed.

Diana never expected to be kidnapped and raped. She also never expected a complete stranger to fight so hard to save her both the day it happened and all the days after.

Wow, this story was wonderful. IT is real and not glossed over. The story is not so much about the rape but the aftermath, and learning to live again. Gideon feels guilty he couldn't stop them from hurting Diana but he saves her several times after that night. Their relationship develops slowly and is so loving and healing on both sides that you can't help but to see how fantastic these characters are. Gideons love and honesty is heart warming. He never expected to fall for Diana but he knows that after meeting her that fateful day his life would be changed forever. This is a story of survival and finding happiness again and becoming whole again even when it seems that is not possible.

Update: I must’ve been in a different headspace when I wrote the first review because upon a second skim, I did roll my eyes at times. It’s true that I appreciate the story but the way it was written sometimes grated on my nerves.

There’s too much narration at parts, too much explaining and not enough showing. I wanted to be immersed in what was happening at several times and that was hard to do when the protagonist was just summarizing what happened instead of letting us experience it for ourselves.

“I had a nap and it was very nice. When I woke up Gideon was looking at me in a strange way but I didn’t think anything of it. We talked for a while and it was easy. I didn’t think about the demons.”

This isn’t an actual quote, but it’s an example of the kind of surface skimming that takes place. There were plenty of moments I wanted to experience for myself.

Other than that, I meant every word of my previous review.
—-

There’s not much I can say about this book except that it’s worth every star. What a refreshingly realistic portrayal of healing and blossoming love in the aftermath of a severe sexual trauma. There was no cringe, there was no eye rolling.

I did get frustrated with our protagonist at times but it’s only because the way things unfolded were so true-to-life. People who have gone through a trauma often have setbacks and it’s not always a steady perfect incline towards healing. If it were a line graph it would go up and down and all around and that’s what we got.

But I have to rave about the dialogue. I have to rave about the dialogue and how completely realistic it was, I felt like I was actually reading conversations that have taken place.

Anyway not much point in me going on about how much I loved this. Just read it. It’s a refreshingly blunt and honest take on a sensitive subject that is often handled very poorly in literature.

This novel introduces us two scarred persons.
Diana,is daughter of the rich and famous father, was kidnapped and raped
and there is Gideon,FBI agent, who tried to help her but failed
and this is their story after that.

Gideon, he's very lovable. he's kind, mature, smart and much more. In the beginning, his act of kindness toward Diana make me very curious about his motive. Is this the expression of guilt or else ? and yes this is sth that Diana is curious toooo. But when the story goes on ,he changed maybe little but anyway he changed.I thinks that maybe he just feel guilt toward her in the first place but his feeling has gradually change. He is perfect for Diana. he's very caring and sweet.

and Diana , she has been fighting with her inner demon in this story,
she was scarred and broke and she lost her old self. she's like the broken glassed that has been picked up and fixed and yes, she will never be the same. She need Gideon but she tried to push him away consciously and subconsciously, fortunately that Gideon is insistence.
well, that made me love him more :).

This couple is perfect. They gradually changed each other and themselves in the good way. I love when they hugged, cuddled or kissed.
Their relationship isn't passionate ,it's always warm and tender.

and this explain their relationship the best

"You’re my heart and my partner and my lover and my helper and the best friend I’ve ever had in the world.”

His expression twisted slightly as he continued, as if he had to control deep emotion too. “You’re my hope for the future and my call to be a better man and I do hope one day you’ll be my wife.”

well, Gideon, I gave you my heart :P

this novel contains many emotion...despair,love,hope and this is very well-written. I absolutely recommend this .

SALVATION is an absolutely remarkable book. It's emotionally challenging to read, but the perseverance of these characters was extraordinary.

Diana was a twenty three year old girl without a care in the world when her worst nightmare happened. Taken, because of who her father was, she soon learned that everything that she thought was important no longer was and she needed to fight to survive. Her one salvation that night came in the form of undercover FBI agent Gideon. With a blown cover, Gideon is as much a captive as Diana, but he manages to give her a small coping mechanism to get through what was about to happen.

Noelle Adams gives us a powerful story of two people trying to dig out from under the shear ugliness of they endured. That one night changed both of their lives forever, leaving a permanent mark. But, as they discover, it also gave them each other. Their relationship, which grew out of an unlikely friendship, proved many things to Diana and Gideon. Diana learned to trust again. To understand that yes, she was beautiful despite what happened to her. And that some is absolutely worthy to love, Gideon's changes may not have been at the forefront of the story, but we saw him communicating more. Sharing his feelings and learning to trust that Diana would tell him when she needed something.

This is by no means an easy read. The author puts us in that basement with Diana and Gideon, forces us to follow Diana into that other room and endure her pain with her. Because of that, I was invested in these characters. I wanted to cry with them. Rage when they did. And fell for these characters long before they fell for each other. If you can get through the first chapter, I promise this is a book that absolutely makes going through the first chapter worth it.

My heart ached for Diana. But I swooned for Gideon. Such a great guy. Understanding, patient and hot!

This particular story was both easy and hard to read for me.

Easy because it flowed well and hard because of the topics that it undertook with realism, understanding as well as compassion for what Diana lived through.

The reason the book was easier to read as well is very simple it did not use graphic descriptions of either the rape itself or Diana's suicide attempt. Instead the emotions she felt were used to connect the reader with Diana throughout the book.

It was a long journey of ongoing healing with the addition of also dealing with allowing Gideon closer and closer to her both mentally and physically.

For Diana, and the reader, the journey was fraught with emotions both negative as well as positive.

I will say that reading this one once will be enough as it will stick with me now forever.

3.5 stars. I think it was really well done. After mulling it over, I wish Gideon had a tiny bit more of a personality.

This was a really well done romance that handles a very serious topic. I thought her journey and struggles felt very really and nothing was magically fixed. This was a tough read because it wasn't a straight journey to recovery, but there were backslides and deviations. I thought Gideon was such a sweet and patient hero for Diana. He got frustrated and angry with her sometimes, but he was always there for her.

This is not a typical romance where its all sunshine once they figure out they love each other. Its a very real story about what happens next and how to live life after trauma. It does have a HEA.

Not dnfing just pausing for now.

Sometimes I like to read depressing shit when I’m depressed. Kinda like when you listen to sad music when you’re already sad.
But I need to pause this for now and finish it when I’m either in a numb or stronger headspace. I didn’t realise reading about someone’s mental would affect mine so much.

It’s a testament to how well the author writes though

This was such a great read. The first chapter was such an amazing opening. It jumped right into the story while still allowing the reader to feel for the characters. It seemed so different from her other books, more real. Absolutely loved it. It was a nice change.
