Serenity: Firefly Class 03-K64 - It's Never Easy is a comic book that was released by Dark Horse Comics on May 5, 2012 for Free Comic Book Day. The comic was written by Zack Whedon and penciled by Fábio Moon. It was released alongside a Star Wars story also written by Zack Whedon. The story is set when Zoë Alleyne Washburne was pregnant, and tells of an attempt to steal the Serenity by a prospective passenger.
Zack Whedon (born August 14, 1979) is an American screenwriter ('Deadwood', 'Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog' and 'Fringe') and Comic Book writer ('Dr. Horrible and Other Horrible Stories', 'Terminator: 2029 to 1984' and Firefly/serenity's 'The Shepherd's Tale').
He graduated in 2002 with a film degree from Wesleyan University where he served as president of the Eclectic Society. Zack is from a family of writers: he is the son of screenwriter Tom Whedon, grandson of screenwriter John Whedon, and the brother of screenwriter/musician Jed Whedon and producer/director/writer Joss Whedon.
His first professional work in television was as a production assistant on his brother Joss Whedon's series, 'Angel'.
He is best known for his work, alongside his brothers Joss Whedon and Jed Whedon, on the parody musical 'Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog' which he co-created and co-wrote.
Missed a couple of the Serenity series graphic ovels the first time around. This is a little vignette where Mal waits, while the crew heads into town for a cargo pick-up, yet trouble still tracks him down.
The art was crappy. Enough to offset this cute little story getting a better rating. Not much to it, almost just a sketch. But Mal is definitely Mal and River, River. And Jayne and Zoe and Simon were good enough.
Mal oh Mal... He never changes, does he? And he can thank River for being alive also! :) I love these details of life at Serenity, I'm really enjoying these!
This is another very short Serenity story that takes place sometime after the events of the movie. A pregnant Zoe takes the crew to deliver their cargo while Mal watches the Serenity. I'm not entirely sure on how she won the argument that she got to make the delivery while pregnant but...reasons? Apparently it boiled down to Mal always getting into a gunfight.
Of course things don't go as planned and someone ends up having to save Malcolm's ass. It ended up being quite funny and I thoroughly enjoyed the story (short as it was) and the classic Whedon humor. HOWEVER, what brings this down a star is the artwork. It is seriously ugly and I have no idea why they went with that style. So...worth a read if you can ignore the bad artwork.
I started at the end of the series and I'll have to work my way back because this little comic book really met my need for more Firefly in my life. And like always, I still need more. If you're a fan of Firefly and Serenity, then take a look!
short, sweet & straight to the point. Loved it. But then I think most of the parts with quirky River in them are good. She keeps you guessing at times.
