I appreciated the attempt to show a character struggling to obey scripture. But there were too many glaring problems. The romance itself was the biggest one. Cassie and Jacob were so hot and cold, it was like every other paragraph one of them was storming out, then thinking about marrying them, then crying, then thinking they didn't deserve the other, et cetera. The constant back and forth was giving me whiplash. Then you add in all the secrets, lies, omissions, jealousy, insecurities... ugh.
Then there were the issues with scripture. When Patrick first announces his intentions, he owns that the verse referred to a man's widow. By the end of the book both he and Cassie seem to have forgotten this? Not to mention the fact that she initially rebuffs him by stating the passage refers to Old Testament. Why did she not stand firm on this? Not to mention the fact that the verse states the man's obligation to the woman. She is not required to accept. All of this is irrelevant. Cassie states that she's been told her soul hangs in the balance if she doesn't comply... She should know that there is only one Way to God, to Heaven, for salvation. And if she didn't, then the author should have taught her.
Her struggle to follow the commandment to honor her parents was not flushed out either. Honoring your parents is not simply obeying their every single command. And her duty to obey Christ and His directions come first.
I had other issues with the plot and subplots and the characters and their histories, but these were the most important ones.

Eliza Haddon has groomed her daughter since birth to be every inch the lady. Whether Cassie is capable of doing anything useful is of no consequence. After all, Cassie will marry well and that will be that. However, life has a way of upsetting the best laid plans. In the wake of the Civil War Cassie has lost both her father and fiancee. All that's left for her and her mother to do now is track down a maverick uncle who might be able to give them something of a better life. On their search for the man mother and daughter stop off in a town. Self-conscious of her shortcomings when it comes to work Cassie goes job-hunting so the Haddons will not have to rely on the charity of friends and family. She finds work with Jacob West, a local businessman. When she fails at the simplest task Jacob still gives her a second chance. Overcoming obstacles in the workplace isn't all she has to face up to either. Eliza has made it quite clear she is not fond of how far her daughter has fallen. Imagine a lady working as kitchen help. Scandalous! But Cassie soldiers on and in the process must show she does have some backbone.
I shall be brutally honest. When I started Love's Sweet Beginning I hated it. In fact I couldn't wait to get to the end of it so it could over and done with. The characters struck me as being nitwits and Cassie was just so extremely inept it wasn't funny - it was frustrating. However, it does pay to persist with some books and so I did. After about 100 pages the story line began to pick up. Cassie was showing some grit, Jacob agonized over his past coming to light and some villains entered the scene. Both Cassie and Jacob fought their own battles on two fronts while butting heads with one another (Jacob has some, shall we say, trust issues). Gradually the plot comes together and ends with a bang.

The characters were a little flat and the story dragged in so many areas; I think it could have lost about 100 pages and still not have missed anything. The whole incident with Cassie's dead fiancee's brother was a wee bit absurd. I find it difficult to believe even he could be as stupid as he was.

Cassie and her mother have nothing but each other after the death of Cassie's father. They were staying with Cassie's father's brother but they have overstayed their welcome. Cassie's mother has a plan that they will go to her brother's place in Noble Springs. Only when they arrive nothing goes as planned. Cassie decides to get a job. Her boss, Jacob West will need more convincing that Cassie is the right woman for the job.
Love's Sweet Journey is the third book in the Sisters at Heart series. This book can be read as a stand alone novel. I instantly fell in love with Cassie. She was not wilting flower. She has a back bone and was not afraid to stand up for what she wanted. While I know this book was about the romance between Cassie and Jacob, I did not feel the connection. Well not right away. In fact they hardly interacted in any romantic way until about mid-way of the story.
Also to be honest, I was so glad when Cassie's mother disappeared for a while in the story. She was uptight and unfriendly. She got on my nerves. Overall another winner for Mrs. Shorey.

Of the three books, I think this one is my favorite. I loved Cassie's determination to not be told she can't do something. Her mother is quite the piece of work and I sympathized with Cassie getting so frustrated with Patrick! What a pain!
All in all this was a good conclusion to the three part series.

Love’s Sweet Beginning was such a joy to read. It was one of those books that just flowed for me. It was also a book that was full of characters that I found myself thinking about when I had to set the book down and attend to something else in the real world! My mind would keep working its way back to Cassie Haddon and Jacob West and all that was going on in their lives!
Although this is the third book in a series, I believe you could easily read this book and understand what is going on without having read the first two books. The characters from the earlier books are present in this story and you will have a deeper appreciation for the lives they are living if you have read the first two books. But, once again, the author has done a great job of making this book part of a series, yet able to be read on its own as well.
The main character, Cassie, has been raised in a wealthy household all of her life. Now that the Civil War is over, and their family’s situation has changed, she finds herself in need of making a life-changing decision. She must learn how to earn a living. She has a lot of perseverance and is willing to do whatever it takes to make a home for herself and her mother. Ah, her mother…this woman drove me crazy in the book. She was just so manipulative and I kept wondering how Cassie would ever be able to get out from under her thumb.
Jacob runs the local grocery store, which also houses a restaurant. He isn’t excited to hire Cassie for many reasons, one being the attraction he feels toward her. Jacob is a bit older than Cassie and we find that he has some secrets from his past. The author does a very good job of creating characters that have had to overcome extreme situations.
I enjoyed watching the characters grow throughout the book. Cassie had to grow in not only learning how to make her way in the world, but in her understanding of God’s word and her own worth in God’s eyes. She was also so respectful of her mother, even during very trying situations. I loved watching Jacob grow in his understanding of God’s love for him and the fact that he truly was a new man. The past was in the past. The love story was sweet and there were some frustrating situations for Cassie and Jacob to work through during this story that kept the plot moving and very interesting all the way to the end.

Love's Sweet Beginning is the third book in Shorey's "Sisters at Heart" series. Having previously read and enjoyed the first two books, I was looking forward to this story and I really liked it!
Cassie's character was very interesting. I liked how she grew as a person and started to take control of her life and make her own choices. I also liked Jacob and his other employees.
I liked how Love's Sweet Beginning had a little bit of intrigue in the story. It was fun trying to guess what had happened in some of the characters' pasts.
Like the second book in this series, I liked how this story included the main characters from the previous books. It's always nice to see what's going on in the lives of characters from previous novels. That's one of my favorite things about series. :) The only problem I had was that it's been a while since I've read the other books, so it was a little difficult to try and remember who everyone was.
All in all, Love's Sweet Beginning was an enjoyable read. I liked the characters, story, and historical elements. If you enjoy historical romance novels, I think you'll like this book.

LOVE'S SWEET BEGINNING by Ann Shorey is a wonderful inspirational Historical Romance 1868 Noble Springs, Missouri #3 in the "Sisters at Hearts" but can be read as a stand alone. Although, I would recommend reading the others in this series, because it is a great series. See, "Where Wildflowers Bloom" and "When the Heart Heals". You will not regret your choices!

This story takes place in Noble Springs Kansas. A town that is growing now that the railroad has arrived. We find that there are several towns that stage coach is the only means of transportation, but quickly changing as the rail lines increase across the West.
We have a young woman, who was born with a "silver spoon" in her mouth, but since her father's death and the Civil War, now have no financial support. Her Mother has had them mooching off relatives for quite awhile. Mother Haddon, doesn't want to lift a finger to help or earn her keep, and demands that her daughter Cassie do the same.
Can't you just picture this family coming to your home, and wanting you to wait on them! Ya right! Cassie does seem to have some gumption, and is willing to lend the hand, much to her Mother's disgust. Now you can picture, and your are probably right, a woman of culture, venturing into a restaurant to work. She probably knows where the knives and forks go.
We also have a man, who has lost at love, but has established himself in the grocery and restaurant business, but will his past catch up with him? Is he going to be able to find happiness, or will a face from the past come to haunt him?
Throughout the book, I see God's hand leading, as long as they are will to listen. I really enjoyed reading this book, and wish I could have lingered here a bit longer.

Welcome back to Noble Springs, Missouri! This trip we get to focus on Cassie Haddon and her mother. They have moved to Noble Springs to try and find their new normal after the war. They come from a very privileged background but the Civil War changed all of that. In order to survive Cassie has decided that she needs to obtain a job. The problem is that her life of luxury left her with very few practical skills. In fact the only job she is able to secure is at the town grocery store. Her employer is Jacob West who has a heart of gold and obviously the patience of a saint because Cassie is really not an ideal employee.
This third book in the series is just as great as the previous two. We get to catch up with the main characters from the first two books and move the story line along in this third book. I really enjoyed the three main women and the way they became 'sisters at heart'. If you are a fan of romantic historical fiction I think you will enjoy this series and this particular book. While each of these books can be read as stand alone titles they are wonderful together as a series and allow you to get a continuous and complete story!

Love’s Sweet Beginning is the third book in the Sister’s at Heart Series by Ann Shorey. This is the first book that I have read out of this series. As I started reading this book, I felt lost that I haven’t read the other two books before this one. But after reading several chapters I became intriqued with what I was reading.
Cassie Haddon has always been used to having everything done for her. Never having to lift a finger for anything, she is what we say spoiled rotten. After her and her mom move to Noble Springs to find her uncle, she is left to support them both. Cassie goes to the Mr. West and pleads for a job, and he gives her a chance.

This was such a sweet story. Since Ann Shorey is a new author to me, I did not know what to expect. I was also a little apprehensive that this was the third book in a series. Even though I have not read the previous books in the Sisters at Heart series, I had no problem keeping up with the events in the book. It did, however, make me curious enough to read about Faith and Rosemary's stories. The plot was not fast paced or adventurous, but it was not boring either. The author had me intrigued and trying to figure out Jacob's past. The romance between Jacob and Cassie was well thought out and so sweet. Who knew such a gruff person could be so sweet to the woman he loved!

Great Ending to a Swell Series!

This was my least favorite book in the trilogy. There was no chemistry between the hero and heroine and the heroine's mother was a crybaby.

Author Ann Shorey is known for her inspirational romances based on faith and her new book is no exception. Love's Sweet Beginning is the third book in Shorey's Sisters at Heart series. Shorey's knack for characterization and attention to detail make her writing expressive and poignant. She draws her readers in with engaging characters and holds their attention with her message of hope and love. Shorey's ability to write stories that completely transport the reader to another time and place is a rare gift in historical romance. A great addition to the series.
What I liked:
I love a good series, for a lot of reasons and the Sisters at Heart series is a well written example of why. A great setting, with lots of potential for conflict and change. Characters that have a reason to grow and adapt and an underlying message of faith. All of these thing come together to make Ann Shorey's books both relevant and realistic even though they are set in the past. Readers who are expecting the typical Christian fiction read may be surprised at her ability to make them take a deeper look at what's in their hearts.
Shorey puts this series in the middle of a historical time period that is fraught with change and difficulty. The Civil War has ravaged the land and it's people and that provides the background for drastic change within the story or within a character. Setting is extremely important in historical romance and I think Shorey really took that into consideration. In Love's Sweet Beginning, the change or conflict centers around Cassie's relationship with her mother and her own sense of self that is emerging. The setting seems to enhance the the idea of her spreading her wings and making a life of her own. Very well done.
Both Cassie and Jacob are trying to outlive their pasts, so to speak. Cassie has always relied on others to provide for her and make her comfortable. It was what was expected and she has no skills with which to change it. Her mother is domineering and commanding and Cassie's abilities are limited by her mothers behavior. Jacob is a grocer in a small Western town who has secrets of his own to keep. But like anyone else he not only wants love but needs it. I thought Shorey did an amazing job of showing how both of these characters changed and grew throughout the story. Cassie begins to see her own potential, to try new things, to defy the conventions that have trapped her. Jacob finds himself not only willing to find love, but open to how much it will change his life. And throughout that underlying theme of hope weaves the story together.
Shorey isn't shy about letting the reader know that Cassie is a woman of faith, that she puts her trust in the Lord and not in herself. The changes she makes in her life are only a reflection of God showing her, her own worth and how that is projected into everything she does. Shorey doesn't hit the reader over the head with it. She doesn't preach. She lets the story itself speak the message she wants to convey and that's what makes inspirational romance so enjoyable for many readers. Things don't just magically happen. The Lord uses circumstances and situations to bring about change and that is very clear in this book.
What I didn't like:
I didn't like Cassie's mother and I doubt many readers will either, but in this case that's a good thing. I believe that's exactly what Shorey was going for with this character. She was unfriendly, unyielding and somewhat ungrateful. But she provides the catalyst Cassie needs to find herself and to set her on the path to becoming the woman she truly wanted to be. I'm glad I didn't like her. She wasn't a villain, she was discord personified and very important to the story.
Bottom Line:
This book is about change and how if affects our lives. it was a romance with an underlying theme. I loved the relationship between Cassie and Jacob and how each of them transformed throughout the book. The setting was simply amazing and the characters were engaging and believable. This is the second book in a grouping that, while they aren’t my normal genre to read, I thought I would read in an attempt to broaden my reading lists. So if you like to visit my page to get some insight into what men enjoy reading, hang onto your thoughts as some of these books may surprise even me. This book is book 3 in the “Sisters of Heart” series by Ann Shorey. While it may be the 3rd in the series, this book can be read as a stand-alone. You do see some of the characters from the first 2 books, but you are provided enough back story to not be lost.
Now that the war is over, Cassie and her mother have traveled from family to family as they try to make ends meet. As they are nearing the end of any support, Cassie finds a job working for a local grocery store when the owner, Jacob, gives her a chance even though she has no work experience at all. Cassie tries to honor her mother’s wishes of not working at the store, but she knows this job is her only chance to provide for them. As she continues to balance work and obeying her mother, Cassie grows into a strong independent woman. Jacob knows that offering Cassie the job is a stretch, but she does need the work and he does need the help. Patient and kind-hearted, Jacob is there to help Cassie and her mother through their tough times. Will this job be enough to help Cassie provide support for her mother? Will Jacob regret giving Cassie the chance at the job? Will there be more to their relationship than just boss/employee? Stand in line if you want to know the answers to these and other questions and BUY THE BOOK!
This is a typical “Girl meets Guy”, “Girl and Guy like each other” and “It all ends Happily Ever After”. There’s not much intrigue, it’s a pretty straight forward romance novel. The characters and the dilemmas they face are realistic. You get to see a lot of growth in the character of Cassie as the author progresses her from a young lady that gets everything served to her to one that is independent and strong-willed. There were times that I thought Cassie could have been more outspoken, at least early in the book, but then I realized that during the era that the book was written, women didn’t really speak out on things. All in all, it is a very solid plot, with some interesting characters. The kind of story that allows you to feel complete once you finish.
Is this a "guy's book"? Quite honestly, no. The setting of the book is post-civil war, which might bring images of dead bodies, attacks and gore. But with this book, you won’t find any of those sights. Although I know that this book will be well received by the women in my church library, this is one book that the men will steer clear of.

Cassey is 25 and doesn't have any useful skills. Raised in the South prior to the Civil War she was taught how to manage a household of servants, how to look and act like a lady. When her father is killed during the war they lose everything due to war and live with different family members. When her uncle tells them they have to go, her mother can only think of one brother that she heard was west. When they depart Cassey is astonished that her mother didn't have any money other than the train tickets. When they arrive at their destination they find that the man they thought would be her uncle was a stranger with a similar name. They are forced to depend on Cassie's friends for a place to stay. Unfortunately, Cassie's friend is expecting a baby with in a couple of weeks. Cassie decides that being a lady hasn't provided any useful skills but she goes to the grocer who also has the adjoining restaurant. He hires her but she isn't a waitress. Cassie is put to working in the kitchen. When she finds a shed and her friends and co-workers all chip in to give her things to make the shack into a home. Her mother is shocked that her daughter has sunk so low as to work as a kitchen helper, moving her into a shack plus having to share a corn husk bed together. Something is happening all through the book. Cassie goes from a spoiled rich young lady to a very independent and stubborn young woman and develops skills to support both herself and her mother. Jacob West is her employer and soon becomes a friend. As she makes new friends, her mother decides on match making. These two people come from different backgrounds on the social ladder and both make wrong assumptions about the other. This book is about learning to accept yourself and others for what they are, learning to forgive, to depend on God and for Cassie - she learns that she isn't lazy nor just a spoiled girl. She makes new friends, romance is in the air and just enough happening to keep you interested in the story.

Cassie Haddon was born with the proverbial “silver spoon”. The end of the Civil war changed her and her mother from wealthy aristocrats to homeless average people with no skills to support themselves. After overstaying their welcome at her uncle’s they are forced to move. Her mother refuses to accept her loss of status and lifestyle, but Cassie takes a realistic point of view, especially after she overheard her uncle call her “useless”.
Her mother uses the last of their money for tickets to Noble Springs, Missouri on a hear-say that her brother is living there. An old friend of Cassie’s, Rosemary Stewart, invites them to stay with her and her husband Elijah. Cassie is angry and humiliated to realize her mother plans to put down roots and take advantage of the Stewart’s hospitality permanently. This and her uncle’s declaring her “useless” spurs her do get a job to support her and her mother.
She applies at Jake West’s restaurant as a waitress. Her persistence and spunk persuade him to hire her. Having never worked in her life she has a real learning experience. Her mother is not only horrified at her working, but down right angry when Cassie rents them a little 2 room cabin in town.
Throughout the book Cassie shows courage, perseverance, and character, as she faces her mother’s conniving and manipulation, not to mention the many mistakes she makes as she learns to make a new life for herself. Mutual respect soon draws Jake and Cassie together and they find themselves falling in love. Her lack of confidence and His secret from his past keep them from declaring their feelings at first.
They had much in common in spite of their very different backgrounds. Jake had grown up poor and neglected, whereas Cassie was raised rich and overly pampered, yet both of them were striving to overcome their pasts through hard work and honesty.
I loved the way Cassie was always double checking her choices and actions by God’s Word. I also admired her respect and patience with her mother’s selfishness and scheming. It was wonderful to see a story where the spoilt rich girl becomes a godly woman of substance. Expect lots of surprises and glitches throughout the story! I appreciated the godliness and integrity of the main characters. An enjoyable book. Although have not read the other two books I never felt I was missing part of the story. I look forward to reading them now!

Her pattern has been to comply with anything her mother wants; Cassie doesn’t know her own mind or opinion. That will change under the pressure of resolving where they are going to live and how are they to going to support themselves. Cassie finds along the way that she is stronger than anyone knew - especially herself.
She meets Jacob, an intriguing man with a mysterious past. Then she meets her fiancé’s brother, Patrick. The tug of war begins! Patrick is convinced by a preacher that he should marry Cassie out of obligation to his deceased brother. This was a hard sell for me and for Cassie.
Cassie’s mother has a surprising past of her own, with many twists and turns. How will going their separate ways work out?
As Cassie’s journey unfolds, a sweet love story intertwines several secrets. More than one character moves from a life of pretense into real relationship.
Details of this post Civil War historical piece were delightful. The characters were developed well and the small town came alive in my imagination.
Cassie did grow by overcoming obstacles and became her own person. I loved how Ms. Shorey highlighted Cassie honoring her mother because I think honor, for the most part, is missing in our American culture. I don’t know how many will relate to Cassie who started as a blank slate, jumping to every whim of her mother’s. It was sheer necessity that broke Cassie free from matriarchal control with her mother’s poor decisions to venture out into independence and self.
Ms. Shorey had me wanting to help people in very practical ways who are going thru hard times. Jacob being helped in his past’s dire straights was pivotal to this entire story. He pays it forward by helping Cassie and then Wash and Becca, recently freed slaves. This was inspiring to me!
I didn’t want to put this book down. It wasn’t fast paced, but kept me captivated and wanting to read more.
I agree with Ms. Shorey. Life hands all of us good times and hard. Without the confidence of God being involved in our lives and weaving everything into something truly special, a person would be at the whim of heartache and despair in life.

Details of this post Civil War historical piece were delightful. The characters were developed well and the small town came alive in my imagination.
Cassie did grow by overcoming obstacles and became her own person. I loved how Ms. Shorey highlighted Cassie honoring her mother because I think honor, for the most part, is missing in our American culture. I don’t know how many will relate to Cassie who started as a blank slate, jumping to every whim of her mother’s. It was sheer necessity that broke Cassie free from matriarchal control with her mother’s poor decisions to venture out into independence and self.
Ms. Shorey had me wanting to help people in very practical ways who are going thru hard times. Jacob being helped in his past’s dire straights was pivotal to this entire story. He pays it forward by helping Cassie and then Wash and Becca, recently freed slaves. This was inspiring to me!
I didn’t want to put this book down. It wasn’t fast paced, but kept me captivated and wanting to read more.
I agree with Ms. Shorey. Life hands all of us good times and hard. Without the confidence of God being involved in our lives and weaving everything into something truly special, a person would be at the whim of heartache and despair in life.

Sweet historical romance.
Love’s Sweet Beginning is the final book in Ann Shorey’s Sisters at Heart series. I have not read the others and was concerned that might make it confusing. I am very happy to say that it was not confusing in the least and Love’s Sweet Beginning stands very well on its own.
I really liked Cassie, her determination to make a life for herself and learn everything she needed. I enjoyed seeing her come out of her shell and become more outspoken and bold. She was never intentionally rude or hurtful, but was not afraid to speak her mind, something I admire. It is quite a struggle to balance that in life and mostly likely more so in a character. I applaud Ms. Shorey’s excellent handling of it.
The writing was superb and I was quickly drawn into the story. I was so engrossed in it that I often found it difficult to put down and finished it in less than a day. The story is fast paced and didn’t lag anywhere, which was a relief. I often read suspense and thought this might seem boring, but it wasn’t at all! I fell in love with the characters and had to know how it was all going to work out!
This spiritual aspect is focused on Cassie’s desire to honor her mother and Jacob’s need for forgiveness. While I enjoyed the forgiveness part, I felt Ms. Shorey could have perhaps gone into more detail about honoring your parents. I often wanted to yell at Cassie for once again catering to her mother, who seemed to be taking advantage of Cassie’s dedication to her. I really wanted Cassie to find a balance between honoring her mother and giving into her every whim. I was happy to see them finally work that out in the end.
I also felt as though Jacob’s troubles were stretched out too far though the book. It took until almost the end for him to finally tell Cassie the truth, because he was so afraid of her reaction, which was so anti-climatic it was almost laughable. I understand there needed to be some conflict for the story to move on, but I think Ms. Shorey could have come up with something more interesting, or at least made it a little more important to the outcome. This is the reason for the 4 instead of 5 stars.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a sweet historical romance.

Love's Sweet Beginning: Sisters at Heart Series book 3***** by Ann Shorey
After the War between the States and the death of her father, Cassie Haddon and her mother, Eliza Bingham have been staying with family. However, they have worn out their welcome and have been asked to leave. The only place Eliza can think of going is to find her brother, Rand Carter, who was living in Noble Springs the last she heard. So they leave St. Louis by train and travel to Noble Springs only to learn that it is not Rand but another man with a similar name. Cassie's friend opens her home to her and her mother for a time. Cassie does not want to impose any longer than needed and seeks employment at a restaurant. Of course, being raised in a privileged home with servants, Cassie has no skills but she is willing to learn. Once she has saved enough money she plans for her and her mother to move into their own place. But Eliza has different plans, she is going to move to Price City to live with her brother and insists Cassie comes with her.
Jacob West, owner of the West & Riley grocery store and restaurant, remembers Cassie and her self-absorbed mother from when they passed through Noble Springs the year before. He is surprised when Cassie applies for a job in his restaurant. They soon learn, however, that she is not a waitress but is actually good at baking pies. Cassie is hopeful that she can make a good living and secure a place for her and her mother soon. But things don't go as hoped as her mother is determined to set Cassie up with an unwanted suitor. Cassie struggles a fine line in trying to make a new life for herself and hopefully her mother and honoring her mother. Further complications follow with a fire and misunderstandings. Cassie learns secrets from her mother's past. Jacob is fearful that his past will be revealed ending any chance of a life between him and Cassie. Cassie and Jacob learn that the most important thing they can do is to trust God and His leading in their lives.
Love's Sweet Beginning is a lovely story with real-to-life characters that warm your heart and some who need a good talking to. As in real life, the characters face challenges, complications, anger and problems trusting. But the also have good friends, encouragement, forgiveness, love and faith....a good recipe for life.

Jacob never planned to hire more help for his restaurant/grocery but Cassie's determination and spirit manage to convince him that she's asset and not a hinderance. But Jacob is hiding from his past - a past that he fears could destroy everything he has accomplished in Nobel Springs and a possibility of a future with Cassie.
Fearing that Cassie may never rise above the servant role she has taken, her mother begins manipulating to secure the future she envisions for her daughter - a future that includes wealth, prestige, and luxury. But a future without the assurance of love isn't in Cassie's plans, but how can she fight for the future she desires and still honor her mother?
As Cassie and Jacob work towards their continued success they must come to terms with the issues that are keeping them apart before they can discover all that the future has to offer them. Secrets from the past must be laid to rest and there are definitely some interesting ones that are revealed throughout the book.
The Sisters at Heart series of books can be stand-alone books, but by reading them all you will have more fully developed characters whom one will see grow throughout the series. Love's Sweet Beginnings is an enlightening glimpse at the railroad industry at its beginnings and the expansion that it brought with it as it moved west. The status of the recently freed slaves is also explored and presented in the presence of two characters. All-in-all this is a well-written book that capture your attention and provide a welcome week-end distraction.

Love's Sweet Beginning is the third book in Ann Shorey's series Sisters at Heart, and the story is as sweet as the title and cover suggest.
Cassie is one of those people you want to cheer on because she's just so doggone nice. Each time she succeeded in doing something she didn't think she could do, it brought on a smile. She's so proud of herself and I was proud for her.
The story begins three years after the end of the Civil War and is told mostly through Cassie's point-of-view. Jacob's point-of-view pops in here and there, especially as he's dealing with a threat from his past and his jealousy over a possible rival for Cassie's affection. He's a successful businessman now and well-respected in the town of Noble Springs, but if who he used to be comes to light, he fears that might change.
The secondary characters stole the show for me. Cassie's mother is one we'd all be glad NOT to have. But Ms. Shorey gave her readers an antagonist with a motivation that raises sympathy even when we don't like her. Jacob's cook, Jenny Fielder, is a nice touch. She's crotchety and protective of her kitchen. The plight of Wash and Becca provides an opportunity to admire them and the hero and heroine.
I enjoyed this book and liked the writing and the characters. However, being a reader who savors suspense, I would have liked a little more of it in connection to Jacob's situation. It ended a bit too easily for me. As well, I wanted more from his point of view. I wanted to get to know him better.
Also, though it never bored me or seemed slow, I felt a shorter word count would have fit the story better. (Have you ever been in a movie you're really enjoying, yet trying to see your watch in the dark and wondering how much time was left?) Others, I'm sure, will find Cassie's struggle and romance sigh-worthy and long for more.
So if your reading taste runs to good writing and a gentle romance, I definitely recommend Love's Sweet Beginning.

Love's Sweet Beginning is the third of the Sisters at Heart series and my favorite. I have wanted to read Cassie's story since she came on the scene in Where Wildflowers Bloom, the first book. Cassie Haddon has come from a privileged background but has found on hard times during the Civil War. Since the death of her father and then her fiance she and her mother have fallen on hard times. Cassie basically has no skills but is willing to work hard to learn rather than to depend on the charity of others. Her mother on the other hand since the first book has been whiney, manipulative and conniving. She had a short-lived marriage to a man who treated Cassie badly. Her mother only married Mr. Bingley because she was used to the finer things in life that Mr. Bingley could provide. Cassie and her mother for a short time live with Rosemary and her husband but Rosemary is expecting a baby and Cassie doesn't want to impose herself and her mother on Rosemary any longer so she takes a job as a cook in Jacob's restaurant. She's not very good at it and gets dismissed the first day but she is determined to make a way so goes back and he reluctantly lets her continue working. She eventually finds housing in a cabin but that is not good enough for her complaining mother. Her mother moves to be near a brother in another town. Cassie eventually proves her worth as a pastry chef and by the middle of the book she and the restaurant owner have started developing feelings for each other but her job is jeopardized by her mother manipulating her to come visit her in the other town. Her mother even connives to get her hooked up with the brother of her dead fiance. She does not love the man but he constantly pursues her even though she has rebuffed his advances.
Jacob has his own secrets that he feels that if revealed could jeopardize his relationship with Cassie and his reputation in town.
As I said I loved this book and hate to see the series end. I hope the author has another great series in mind lined up. I love reading her historical fiction.

Love's Sweet Beginning by Ann Shorey is set in America during the historical time period right after the Civil War.
Before The War Between the States, Cassie had servants to do everything for her so she knew precious little of any value. Her uncle, with whom they are living, has deemed her " useless." As much as it hurts, Cassie knows it is true. They must leave, however, because her and her mother had long outstayed their welcome. They didn't own a home and had precious little on which to live. Without relatives or friends, they were homeless.
After finding a friend with whom to stay, Cassie realizes she is going to have to get a job. Their options had run out, and it was the only one left to her. Cassie approaches the local grocer for a job. She starts on a temporary basis. Her mother does not at all approve. Can she manage to keep her job with no skills? Will she be able to provide for her and her mother? Is perhaps love in her future?
This is a wonderful story of a young lady whose hard work, courage, and tenacity gets her through such difficult times. I found myself cheering for her as she tries so hard to please her employer, keep her job, and become so valuable that he can't fire her. Cassie is a wonderful young lady, and she even surprises herself as she begins to bloom once out of the shadow of her mother. Jacob has his faults, but he is very compassionate. I must say, very patient as well. This was a well written story that had a nice pace to it. It wasn't too fast, but in no way did it drag. The surrounding characters add well to the story. Cassie, however, makes it shine. The closer I got to the end, the harder it was to put down. The story builds as one turns the pages. It's a sweet story, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. This was my first read of Ann Shorey. I will definitely be reading more.
