Okay, let's see, I really loved the book, I didn't want to put it down, except I had to because of real life. Lol. I loved Dante and Rockys story! Rocky drove me insane because she was so back and forth with Dante! She always wanted the truth but then would act hysterical when he told it to her! I loved how Dante was so sweet but hated how he was so secretive all the time. But you can defiantly tell how much he loves Rocky. I also loved Nat and Aiden. They are the perfect couple! They are also such great friends to Dante and rocky and genuinely care about their happiness and well being. That what I loved about them. And that their love is so strong for each other, even if they are just teenagers. All in all I loved the book and can't wait to finish the whole series!

I really enjoyed reading this book! As someone who grew up in the town where the story takes place, it was exciting to read about the characters going to the same places that I have. The characters felt so real and relatable. Rocky bugged me sometimes with her reactions and how she acted but it made me realize that, oops, I acted like that when I was her age too. Learning about Dante's past made me sympathize with him and to me, if an author can make me do that then they have talent. The relationship between Rocky and Dante was so intense, which is how so many young relationships can be. For her first novel, I think Calista Smith did a brilliant job. I can't wait for book 2!

Amidst a terrible scandal, Raquel's parents get divorced and she has to switch schools. Switching schools your senior year is not something anyone wants to go through but luckily, Raquel has one of her closest friends by her side. Raquel has plan after plan all lined up for her after she graduates but little did she know that everything in her life would be thrown off track by a handsome man named Dante.

Breaking Down follows Raquel though her tumultuous senior year of high school. That this book occurs during high school is an important thing to remember because I think that some book reviewers have lost sight of that little point. High school is full of drama, especially with teenage girls (especially) because they are fickle, moody creatures that no one understands, not even themselves. And I bet that a lot of girls (and women) can relate to this book ... the immaturity, the rash decision making, the drama (oh, the drama) over things that seem so minute and miniscule now were life changing issues at the time. That being said ... the conversations were a little immature at times, even for these teenagers. There is one saying that occurred quite frequently in the book and while I understand WHY it was being said, it still grated on my nerves each time I saw it ... it was "swear to bears". Raquel and her best friend said this all the time because they didn't like saying "swear to God". I personally don't like saying that either but the repetitiousness with which it showed up was a little much. But then again these are teenage girls saying this and that makes it understandable. Let's move on ... I've run this topic into the ground.

I found Raquel's love interest ... interesting. It took me a long time to really warm up to Dante. But the conversations between these two ... well ... we've all had that one guy in high school that makes us girls nervous and excited and flustered. I really loved the realism put into their relationship. It took me back a little bit to those carefree days of young love. It was interesting to watch their love ebb and flow on the pages.

This was a pretty good book. But. You knew there was going to be one, there always seems to be with my reviews. There was A LOT going on. A. Lot. This one book could easily have been multiple books if the issues were fleshed out a bit more. The story also jumped around a little bit and that made it feel jerky and stilted in places when I think that it could have flowed a little smoother. I would probably read something else by this author, I believe that this is her first book and it would be cool to see how her writing has changed and evolved.

Oh, one last thing ... no girl, woman, or child should EVER say this about a guy/man ... "This guy has no idea how scrumptious he is." That is never okay. No self-respecting man would ever take that as a compliment and no one uses the word scrumptious unless they are talking about their grandma's oatmeal cookies.

Wow..umm..ok.. I'm trying to really find the right words to descride this book. It was all over the palace when it comes to emotions. It took me to really...the oh hell no...to ok that's what I'm talking about...to ohh come one!...then to wow! Yes it seems confusing but this book fucking rocked!

Raquel "Rocky", moves to a new school her senior year, she's had a hell of a hard time at her old school, and I definitely felt for the girl, she didn't deserve what happens to her, but she this beautiful girl and so shy that u can't even imagine what people really think. Starting over isn't so bad for her though, but Dante is a major loop.... Rocky isn't the type of girl I think is ready for what she feels, think about it girls this is high school love, not that happily afters don't exist, but this is what ever girl hates to go wrong. I felt for her fried for, her, wished I could hold her hand too. Rocky is one amazing character. And the only time I see her real age come out is when she is with her BFF, but that's most lie any girls from 1-100 yrs old, if u can't be fun and happy with ur girls, who can you have fun with??!?!

Dante, ohh goodness, what to say? He's an arrogant ass, is first Nd foremost. He sees Raquel I I felt the automatic connection. But with a man that looks like him, there's bound to be road blocks before you can actually have the man. I loved him and then wanted to choke him sooooooo many times in this book, but he is such a genuine character, you can't help but to like him in the end.

This is a story of young love that can go right or wrong, what these two characters have to face is a definite flash back of so many of my own and my friends loves that have came and went. We were all Rocky once and there a Dante for all of us. You can't just NOT fall completely into this story though. The prologue has you saying "well dan" while the ending has you curing and then taking a breath to come to terms with what could possibly come next. I'm STILL reeling from this story and OMG Calista I wanna just kiss ur face for this story. I'm very intrigued where she could possibly go from here.

Overall Rating 5+ Stars (Should be 10)

So I got this book as part of Calista’s Blog tour and O.M.G, I’m so glad I signed up for this tour. This author is brilliant and very talented. It is her debut novel and I was not disappointed at all. I was quite intrigued on page one, then I start to read chapter after chapter and I was not able to put this book down. I was quite pleased with the author’s writing style.
Raquel (Rocky) at the beginning of the book was going through something horrible, something a teen should never have to go through. It broke my heart. So she start new at another school, where she meets Dante. At first I really didn’t like him, but after I kept reading I fell in love with him. Raquel and Dante start a on again off again relationship. This romance is not what you expect. It is not all roses and hearts, the romance is a heart breaking one. They go through so much together, and by the end of the book all you want to do is smack Raquel. About the last 20% of this book I UGLY CRIED!! This book ripped my heart in half. I just can’t wait until the next book, because I really want to know what will happen with these characters. The secondary characters are AMAZING!! Nat, Aidan, and Val you will fall in love with them also.
This book is the best book I’ve read in a LONG time, it was definitely a page turner, and I promise you this book is a MUST read. It will have you laughing and crying all at the same time. Yes some part will have you pissed off as well. In my opinion this book deserves more than 5 stars. Hats off to a brand new author who will definitely surprise you and make you fall in love with her as well!! Thank you Calista for writing this amazing book.

*I received this book for review from the author, this in no way affects my thoughts expressed in this review*

I was so excited when I was invited to be a part of this blog tour! I had been wanting to read Breaking Down for such a long time and for one reason or another, I hadn't gotten to. There was just something about it that drew me to it, and I knew I had to read it when I had a lot of free time because I had a feeling that it was going to be one of those "have to read in one sitting" books, I'm sure y'all know what I'm talking about, right? Well, I was definitely right! I could not put it down.

I absolutely loved Rocky! She was such a strong character, although at times when(no spoilers, but) misunderstandings or things along those lines occurred I just wanted to Gibbs slap her upside the head and be like "girl, come on now! Get it together!" She goes through a lot before and during this book, and I feel like she is really brave person. She is lucky, I have to say, to have a friend like Natalia. She's always there when she needs her, and, quite frankly, helps her keep her head on straight. Then there is Dante. What is there to be said of Dante? Like Rocky I absolutely love him but, again like Rocky, sometimes he needs a little sense knocked into him. It seems like the word conspires to keep those two apart, yet all throughout the book you can't help but root for them.

I'm not going to give anything away, but darn it I'm anxious for the sequel! There is a huge cliffhanger type ending that has me ready to read Breaking Away right now. Like, right now. I definitely recommend this book, it's a new favorite!

A Beautiful Coming of Age Story by
Breaking Down by Calista Smith is a beautiful love story, but also a coming of age story.

Raquel, nicknamed "Rocky" is an average teenage girl dealing with a not so average past. Her best friend Natalia helped her to overcome the experience. Because of Rocky’s parents divorcing, she and her mother re-locate, causing her to attend a new school for her senior year. This is the year Rocky will live up to her nickname. Fortunately, Natalia will be attending the same school and will be a loving support for Rocky, even if she doesn’t realize it, as she travels the uncertain terrain of self-awareness, self-respect, and reliance.
Rocky falls in love with Dante, a gorgeous, popular fellow who is fawned over by every girl in school.
I enjoyed following the emotion growth of these two as they faced the challenges before them. By the end of the book, I was both wiping tears and cheering Rocky’s strength as she stood by her decisions.
Ms. Smith has impressed me with her story telling ability. Breaking Down is well crafted, insightful, and totally absorbing. I look forward to reading every book in this series. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys YA as well as any parent that has forgotten what it is like to be young and in love.

This is a sweet if not, teenage drama filled coming of age story. For a Young Adult book it can get steamy but fairly typical for teenagers. The characters are well developed and I could feel the intense friendship between Rocky and her friend Natalia. Also, the love interest of Dante was well written and as a reader I understood why Rocky was attracted to him. He was cocky but lovable.
The writing itself started off rough and quickly recovered as if the author found her stride after a few chapters. Also, I feel like the reason for Rocky’s move and why she has trouble confiding in people could have been expanded upon. Rocky was emotionally traumatized by a teacher at her previous school but the author just gave a page or two to this. Whereas later she writes on and on about how Rocky will eventually confide in Dante or that she wants to talk to Dante but can’t. The fights start to get repetitive where I just wanted to grab Rocky by the shoulders and shake her or at least tell Dante to walk away.
I started to lose count how many fights they had. While that is quite typical of teenagers, as a reader of fiction it can become grating. But, other than that Breaking Down was a good, sweet coming of age book that I think teenagers and some young adults would like. So, I give it four out of five stars.

This is a YA/coming of age novel. The beginning for me starred off a little slow, but quickly picked up.

Raquel, or Rocky, as they call her, is extremely close with her bff Nat. Rock has a string attraction to Dante. They get together only to break up. Even when they aren't together, the still want each other. Rock has some things in her past the she isn't proud of.

Dante is completely swoon worthy yet brooding. His past is not something he likes to talk about. Rocky, is all he wants.

When they are finally together for what seems to be the last time, a horrific accident happens that is neither of their faults. Rocky keeps pushing everyone way.

I was really super pissed off that the book ended the way it did!!!! Yup, super mad!!! Just when another turn of events occur, the ending happened!!! No! I need more!!! Asap!!!

I think the author got stronger in her writing as she went on. I really liked the story and cannot wait to read the next part... which I hope is soon!!?!?!

It would be, oh so easy, to talk about the story - but I won't. Rocky, Dante, and Natalia were all credible characters. This is a complex coming of age story in which traumatic events, pasts, and quest for love play intricate roles.

The writing improved as the story moved along, the characters developed nicely, from Rocky with a troubled life to Dante with a past he would rather not talk about. The author made sure her writing was engaging throughout by twisting plots and placing tense events. There has to be a sequel, due to the way this story ended. I will definitely be going back for more and look forward to seeing how this young couple, Rocky and Dante, develop...Oh, young love...

Heart wrenching and addictive.
This exceptional young adult story will draw you in and keep you turning pages. The characters are complex and real. The situations are at times painful, at other times touching, and always entertaining. The book is a well done and complete coming of age story. As such, it is not unusual that it has some unresolved elements that leave you wanting more. Boy does it ever leave you wanting more! I’m actually quite anxious to read the next installment, but I won’t say why. You’ll have to read it for yourself. You won’t be disappointed.

Okay my review is pretty much sweet and short and to the point. To be honest, when I first started reading this book, I didn't think I would get reeled in as much as I did. I could completely relate to all the characters. I pretty much fell in love with Dante right along with Rocky. Great start to what I know will be an awesome series. I cannot wait until the next book comes out and see where all their stories go. Very well written and I am looking forward to see what else this talented author has in store for us.

A free copy of this book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.

There are readers who are going to love Breaking Down. I know this, and I’m glad about it, but I just can’t count myself among that group.

It’s not that this story doesn’t have its merits. The characters grew on me over time, and by the end of the story I had become invested in the romance. Still, there were several elements that stood in the way of this book really clicking for me.

1) Everything happens too fast. In the very first chapter, within minutes of meeting one another, Dante and Rocky are engaged in a flirtatious pillow fight, feeling jolts of electricity when they touch, and making out on their friend’s couch. Where’s the build-up? Where’s the plausibility? I had barely been introduced to the main character, didn’t have an inkling about what the setting was, and had seen no real plotting aside from the prologue. I had no solid ground to stand on before I was thrown into an abrupt and foundation-less romance.

It was frustrating to me how quickly Rocky fell for Dante. There’s a point early on in the book where she refers to him as “the guy I’ve begun to fall in love with.” All I could think was, “Whoa, honey, slow down! You barely know the guy. The two of you have had precisely one real conversation. Other than that and sticking his tongue down your throat on two occasions, he’s done nothing but confuse you and send you mixed signals. How are you in love?”

2) It’s all about the romance. And nothing else. I like love stories, but love alone can’t sustain an entire book. There need to be interesting subplots and well-rounded, fleshed out supporting characters. Also, the main characters need to have lives outside of their relationship – they need to seem like real people. In Breaking Down, it feels like the romance is the entirety of Rocky and Dante’s lives. I would have liked to see more meaningful scenes with Rocky and her parents, or have gotten some idea of what Dante’s hobbies were. Although the reader is told that Rocky wants to be in the Peace Corps and that Dante is planning to enlist in the military, it’s just that – telling, not showing.

Every character besides Dante and Rocky seems to exist only to contribute to the romance, whether to move the romance along, serve as an obstacle to the romance, or simply give Rocky a chance to talk about the romance. This is a shame, as the supporting characters have a lot of potential. I enjoyed the scenes with Rocky’s mom, Malachi, Val, and even Dante’s dad, and I would have liked to see more of them. Unfortunately, they didn’t seem to get any page time unless it had to do with Dante and Rocky’s relationship.

3) Drama, drama, and more drama. Rocky and Dante are ridiculously high maintenance. They keep secrets from each other, play mind games, allow themselves to be swayed by rumors and jealousy, and get caught up in he-said-she-said misunderstandings. They can’t trust each other and have shouting matches in the school hallways. There are several instances of trembling knees and tear-filled eyes and people storming angrily out of restaurants and classrooms.

And oh, the mixed signals that Dante and Rocky send one another! One minute Dante will be giving Rocky the cold shoulder, and the next he’ll be sending her flirtatious texts – while his girlfriend’s sitting right next to him, no less. Sometimes they’ll be chilly acquaintances, sometimes soul mates, and sometimes people who are “in love but not good for one another” and are therefore just friends (yeah, ok, sure). There’s one scene in particular that made me throw my hands up in annoyance and befuddlement: moments after telling Rocky that they should content themselves with simply being friends, Dante links his pinky with hers – their old symbol of affection and togetherness. Not only does he continue to hold her hand in plain sight of his girlfriend, he adamantly refuses to let go, even when Rocky struggles to pull free of his grip. All of the drama and mixed messages are just too much; in the words of YouTube sensation Sweet Brown, “Ain’t nobody got time for that!”

4) It took a while for me to fall for Dante. There can be a fine line between confident and arrogant, but in Dante’s case he falls firmly on the side of arrogance, no ifs, ands, or buts about it. To give you an idea of how full of himself he is, he’s a snippet from when he catches Rocky checking him out:

“‘Take a picture, it lasts longer!’

Wow that wasn’t a daydream at all. ‘What? Oh, What? No, I, my phone, and I-‘….

‘No really, take a picture.’ Dante lifts his white t-shirt to reveal his chiseled abs and flashes a smile….”

It’s not just Dante’s arrogance that got to me; it’s his whole frame of mind. There’s a scene where he gets angry at Rocky and calls her a stupid bitch, and at another point in the book he orders Rocky not to wear dresses for other guys – EVEN THOUGH HE ISN’T DATING HER AND IN FACT HAS A GIRLFRIEND OF HIS OWN. Speaking of girlfriends, there’s a point when – referring to his ex – he says something along the lines of, “Oh, I feel bad for her. She lets guys use her, me included.” You might think this means that he’s regretting his behavior towards his ex, but no – he goes on using her, knowing full well what he’s doing. Classy, Dante. Glad you have principles.

In summary, Breaking Down just wasn’t the book for me. I did eventually grow to like Dante, and the drama dissipated a bit by the end of the novel (which was great, by the way), but it wasn’t enough to turn the book around for me.

Goodreads Teaser:
"Raquel, "Rocky" as her friends call her, is an introverted girl, on the brink of turning eighteen. They soon realize that things aren't always what they seem and find themselves forging an intense bond. But when life continues to hand them obstacle after obstacle, can their new found love help save her or will she finally find herself Breaking Down?"

This is a sweet story, filled with rich emotions and some complicated characters. The premise of this book holds a great deal of potential, however I felt that not all of it was realized in the delivery. The main character wasn't as consistent I felt she should be. To me Rocky's behavior and emotional responses were to erratic to feel realistic. I understand that her character needed to be somewhat emotionally unstable, but I found the way she would swing from being totally irrational to wise beyond her years a bit over the top.

While Dante had his own hidden issues, he remained fairly consistent in his behavior, slowly growing over the course of the book. Of course, that growth came with Rocky's help, yet those scenes rang much truer for me than Rocky's personal scenes. I still felt that there was more going on with Rocky than we were shown, but given that there is at least one more book in the series that is okay.

The story is told from Rocky's point of view, which allows for some interesting insights. However I found the leaps from diary-style to live action a bit stilted, but I am admittedly hypercritical of transitions, so others may not have any issue with these transitions. I do wish that Rocky's ethnic background had been more fully explored, as opposed to the occasional references that were made. The same is true for Dante's ethnicity and history, but again, with a sequel coming soon I'm hopeful that these issues will be addressed in further detail.

The supporting characters, particularly Natalia - Nat for short, are quite well rounded and entertaining. They bring a lot to the story, helping move the story along and giving it added depth and credence. Malachi is also a great character, and one I hope gets a lot more page time in the next book, as I think he could be a sterling character to follow and learn more about.

I did like how the story came full circle for Rocky, returning her to where she began this particular journey. And it will be interesting to see how things are handled in the sequel, assuming that Rocky and Dante are the main characters in the sequel. But with the title of 'Breaking Away' it could well be that Aiden and Natalia are the feature characters. Though there were some things that didn't work for me, overall the story is sweet, and the pacing is well done. I think that as a debut book this is a solid start, and Smith shows a lot of promise. I expect she'll develop into quite a good writer as she gains more experience, and that her readers will enjoy going on that journey with her.

Would like to thank Calista Smith for gifting me this book for a honest review.

We are introduced to Rocky in High School, when she is involved in a huge, serious scandal with a teacher, which was not her fault, but has to deal with a lot from other students and with the separation of her parents moves away with her mom to start her senior year at a new school. Luckily for her she is going to start school with her best friend Nat at her side.

One evening while hanging out with her friend Nat and her boyfriend Aiden she has an encounter with Dante, Aiden's best friend. Dante has a girlfriend but that doesn't stop him from flirting with Rocky. Rocky is a shy, sweet girl and she doesn't want trouble, but she is very attracted to Dante.

So this is where my dilemma starts it was really hard for me to like Dante....

he was a bit selfish and full of himself and sometimes just plain mean. I had to keep telling myself that this is high school and he has had it rough and he tends to close off and feels he doesnt deserve Rocky. I must say he messes up quiet a bit with Rocky, he kept things from her, but Rocky was no saint in with holding information either. One thing I did like about Dante is he never pressures Rocky about sleeping with him he respected that she was a virgin and waited. I also had to give it to Rocky for staying strong for awhile too. Both just kept too many things from each other and so many problems could of been avoided if they just would of talked it out. There was no trust.

"I love him. I cant help that. I know he loves me too, mom. He does. He just has so much from his past that haunts him. It's like every time he gets a fighting chance those skeletons pop out of the closet and try to pull him back in there with them."

So then Rocky decides that she is going make up this fake relationship with Malachi her friend to help Dante move on, but she doesnt want Dante to move on and she still loves him. Right this is going to really work. I did not see the point of this she was just hurting Dante and herself really. Oh and Dante doesnt waste anytime going back to his ex, who has only caused problems in their relationship.

Okay so Iam all over the place here jumping from my likes and dislikes, going back to likes, I liked that we get to read about Rocky and Dante from the beginning of the school year, through their ups and down, their make up and break up too finally graduation. So Graduation things are looking good for Dante and Rocky now, lots of things are happening, but then disaster strikes Rocky and Dante, effecting more Rocky and she is going through a very hard situation and she is struggling horribly. So around here is where Dante won me over, he really stepped up here

He was all about Rocky and helping her. But Rocky is suffering too much and then Dante starts to push her, he wanted her to decide something about their future together like now or never and she just was not ready and he of course did not take things well. Rocky just pretty much lets him leave for boot camp and decides she needs to get away. Overall great start to the series, cant wait to read the next book.

***** I was lucky to recieve this book from the author for an honest review****

I give breaking down 4 stars****

***NOTE This book contains strong language, mature topics and sexual content.**

This book is a mix between YA/Contemporary romance. Raquel 'Rocky', is a teenager with a tough past, causing her to move schools and try to deal with her issues. Dante, a smooth player with problems of his own, puts himself in Rocky's life with his so-sure-cocky and humourous personality that you can't help smile at. They are both heading into their senior year in school and planning their future, but that doesn't stop their attraction. Raquel and Dante are attracted to eachother instantly, and from the get-go Raquel senses Dante's trouble, and maybe she is right, considering he has got a girlfriend while trying to win over Raquel.

So I wasn't sure what I was going to make of this book..considering all I read is New adult romance books..yes fifty shades has ruined me lol!! I, however was still excited about reading it as I haven't read something in this genre in a long while.

I loved dante!! bloody hell even as a teenager/ eighteen year old he is so smooth and will have you smirking at his quick wit and also breaking your heart at the hurt he hides behind with his humour. He pushes raquel and he loves it! As much as he was a player and cocky at times he was so damn sweet!! I loved Natalia, her friensdship with Raquel was so special and she was so sassy and that complemented Raquels character so well! Natalia and her boyfriend Aiden, are friends with Dante and that's how he and Raquel come to be in one anothers lives..and the whirlwind begins!!

I liked how sweet this book could be but even though they were young it was so intense at times! This is a coming of age story, I love how it shows all different sides of young love, it was very well done by Calista. I was surprised how much I liked this but I did.

However, I liked Raquel, but she did get on my nerves..I usually get immensely pissed off at the Alpha in a book but I kind of love that but Raquel was pissing me off big time! she seemed so whiny, I didn't get some of her choices.. her friendship with shaun? I didn't get it. That girl didn't make the greatest of decisions. I am used to a certain genre, and a way with books so Dante and Raquel's relationship, when others were involved (without giving much away) wasn't my favourite and just didn't particularly enjoy that in the book. BUT I did enjoy it and thought it was a good story and done well.

*I recieved this book from the author in exchange for my honest opinion*

I don't know where to start! Breaking Down had me all over the place! I'm pretty sure I almost threw my kindle 15 times before I finished it!

I think by the middle of the book I was texting my friend and telling him this book is killing me! I loved it! I loved the characters! They are totally relateable!

Blurb:
Raquel, "Rocky" as her friends call her, is an introverted girl, on the brink of turning eighteen. Having already been dealt a bad hand recently, her life gets even more complicated when her parent's divorce forces her to relocate with her mom to the city of Rancho Cucamonga, California. She will be facing her senior year in a new high school. Fortunately Natalia, her best friend since birth, will be there. It's the one thing keeping Rocky from completely going off the deep end.

She plans to stay focused on her future, which includes trying to join the Peace Corps. Then in walks Dante. He's cocky, handsome, well-built, popular and so not her type. She is determined to keep her distance. The last thing she needs is someone prying into her past. Dante loves a challenge though, and when his relentless pursuit captures her attention, she just can't stop herself from falling for him. They soon realize that things aren't always what they seem and find themselves forging an intense bond. But when life continues to hand them obstacle after obstacle, can their new found love help save her or will she finally find herself Breaking Down?

At the beginning of the book I could feel the connection between Rocky & Dante. Let me tell you.. I wanted to slap Dante so many times! Then of course Rocky got on my nerves a bit the way she was acting. I know shes a teenager but she came off kind of whiny.

I loved the intensity of Rocky & Dante!

Rocky is such a complex character and it just made her feel "real" to me.

Dante is totally swoon worthy! I admit at the beginning his attitude turned me off but I came around! I guess I found out he had a reason for his actions.

I don't know what else to say without spoilers! I love this book! I think by the time I finished it..it was one of my favorites. When a book can get me sooo worked up..whether its screaming at the characters or wanting to throw my kindle at the situations they are put in..then I know its a good book!

This was my first book from Calista Smith and it will definitely not be my LAST!

Wow! Breaking Down reminded me of how much drama and angst there really is in high school. Rocky begins her senior year in a new town but with her best friend, Nat. She’s switched schools after an incident at her old school forces her and her mother to leave. Trying to put her past and her parent’s recent divorce behind her, she looks to her senior year with excitement. When she meets Dante, Nat’s boyfriend, Aiden’s best friend, she’s blown away. As time passes and they spend more time together, they realize they have a really strong connection, but their road to happiness will be bumpy, especially when their pasts and certain people, get involved.

I loved the storyline, but it was filled with lots of angst and drama. In the beginning, Dante was a jerk, and I wasn’t sure if I was going to like him or not. However, as his walls began to crumble, I ended up loving him. Rocky probably ended up irritating me even more. I loved her. She had a great heart, but she didn’t give it freely much to anyone, except for Nat. Dante really ended up being a great guy who truly loved Rocky, and I had mixed feelings about her by the end of the book. I was mad at her, but yet I was proud of her. She was growing and maturing, doing exactly what she needed to be doing.

Breaking Down truly depicts what it’s like to be a teenager. I remember feeling like I knew exactly what I wanted, yet I didn’t have a clue. Rocky and Dante are in the exact same place, but she has a lot of soul searching to do. It’s easy to get lost in the angst and drama of the book, but Smith does a great job of telling a deeper story. Not dealing with your past and not dealing with that grief and all the emotions take a toll, and you break down. You have to look deep within yourself and figure out who you really are. So, Rocky and Dante’s story is not over, and I’m anxiously looking forward to seeing where their journey takes them.

**I received this book from the author in exchange for my honest review**

There are several things I liked about this book, and several things I disliked about it. I liked the storyline, it had huge amounts of potential, there's obvious talent, and it has the ability to keep you reading, even when you figure you can't take anymore of the characters and want to quit.

I almost DNF this a few times. Here's why.. the characters. I didn't like the characters at all, Rocky made me want to reach through the book and poke her in the eyeball, every other page or so. I don't like story-lines that have people breaking and making up, constantly, fighting and not talking it out until later, then continuing on with their relationship like nothing happened. I had a hard time believing that Rocky was that naive to think that she wasn't leading Shaun on. She is in a group of friends that are sexually active, have coed sleepovers, drink at dances, and have criminal records, she can't possibly be that naive. I also wish there were more world buildup. It was almost halfway through the book before I realized that Rocky was mexican. Dante I maybe guessed was black, because of the name, but even then wasn't all together sure because I've seen the name in a few books. Also I got confused several times because of names. there was a Mel, Melinda, Melissa. There was Nat and Natalia, there was Rock and Raquel. I still dunno who Mel and Melinda and Melissa were half the time, and the characters kept jumping back and forth between nicknames and given names, half the time I was like..wait..what?

All that being said, I didn't DNF it, I read it, it kept me up most of the night wanting to know how it'll end up. There are a lot of 5 star reviews out there for this book, the points I listed about the fighting and naivity and stuff like that is what brought it down for me, and it's just my opinion only, other people love this book, so give it a shot!

I loved the premise of this book.

Raquel Garcia moves and starts going to a different school. There she meets Dante. I was never sure what to think of Dante until the very end. He has a girlfriend and then he doesn't. He wants Rocky, but then he does some things that make you think otherwise. I did not like the name calling. It was too early in the story and not enough connection for Dante to get so angry and start calling Raquel names.

I think the writing was not polished enough since sometimes I felt like the feelings and thoughts of Raquel were all over the place. In the beginning, things moved slowly and then sped up so quickly that I I had to think about what was happening. Something tragic happens in Raquel and Dante’s lives and they are faced with other decisions. I had a huge dislike for Nat, the best friend. There are a few things that happen in the story, but I cannot exactly go through them since they will give away a lot that happens towards the end. However, because of these “things” I am still not sure what to think of either of the main characters. They are seniors in high school, but decisions of commitment are forced on them. I did not understand any of that and why it had to be that way. Some of the verbiage felt awkward and I also think that a lot inner dialogue could have been eliminated which would have made the story flow at a better pace. I think that parts of the story were not executed properly.

I was given an ARC book for an honest review free of persuasion from the author or anyone else affiliated with this book

WARNING CONTAINS SOME SPOILERS AND ADULT CONTENT

In this book you meet Raquel and Dante. Raquel and Dante are instantly attracted to one another. Their relationship right from the beginning is a rocky one. This book tells the story of their love, trials, and tribulations.
In the beginning of the book, Raquel and her mom move due to a divorce between Raquel's mom and dad. They move to the same town that Raquel's best friend Natalia lives in. This happens the summer before her senior year. She will be in a new school for her senior year, but is determined to make the best of it.
Enter Dante,a boy ever girl wants. However, Raquel meets Dante for the first time at Nat's boyfriend's, Aiden, house. Dante happens to have another girlfriend at the time. Nat tells Raquel to stay away from Dante because he has a reputation for being a playboy. Raquel tries to listen but is pulled in by the chemistry felt between the two.
Are Raquel and Dante destined to be together? Is this an epic love or a massive failure from the start?
This book has a lot of ups and downs. You are taken on a emotional roller coaster while reading the story of their relationship. I really enjoyed this book. It will pull you in and make you keep the pages turning to find out what happens next. I am looking forward to reading book two in the Breaking Series!

Raquel "Rocky" Garcia has just had her world turned upside down after a scandal has rocked her world, her parents have split and she moves with her move to a new town to be with her best friend Natalie for senior year. As she tries to leave the past behind her she finds herself still struggling with decisions and the "high school" life with boys.

Dante King is known as a player and is the best friend of Aiden, Natalie's boyfriend. Dante has had his own struggles in his personal life but something brings him to Raquel.

As Dante and Raquel deal with all the issues of high school there are secrets kept from each of them and a revolving door on their relationship. As both struggle to figure out what they need they cause each other pain but need to figure out what keeps bringing them back together.

I enjoyed this book but I had to constantly remind myself that they were high school students as at many times I was getting so frustrated with their actions and decisions.

The back and forth that was consistent through out the book was getting a bit much but it all came down to the fact that neither was completely honest with the other and there were so many secrets kept from the other.

There were definitely a few super sad moments in the book and I'm interested to see where everything goes as the book ends on such a sad note and I hope that everyone is able to get some closure.

Meet Rocky, a seventeen year old, forced to change schools after an incident that wasn't her fault caused her to be bullied viciously by her peers. She only has one friend left in that area and he's standing by her. She starts her new school and then Dante catches her eyes and whatever she tries to do, it seems that they are destined to spend their lives together. Through ups and downs, lies and distrust, they seem to come through them all stronger every time. The problem is that they both have serious plans for what they want to do after high school, and they both involve going out around the world for various reasons.

From the moment I started reading I knew that this was a book series I was going to want to see through to the end. Written from Rocky's point of view, her inner most thoughts and feelings are lain bare across the page and while she is telling the world one thing, it is obvious to the reader that she means something completely different. Well written and fast paced, you'll find yourself laughing and crying whilst reading this book. I know that when I read the last page, I wanted to be sure that I was able to find the next in the series because I am desperate to know how this ends, and you will be too! Highly recommended, great book and an awesome romance!

I was given a copy of Breaking Down in exchange for and honest review and truly enjoyed the book from beginning to end.

I felt the main character Raquel's emotions as she struggled with the feelings she developed for a boy in her new high school named Dante that was a known player. Not wanting to get hurt but unable to get over Dante, Raquel acted like a typical teenage girl by pushing the one who broke her heart away yet always going back to him out of love. Raquel was lucky to have good friends by her side when she was down, but facing reality was not always easy; especially with a troubled past. I won't mention what made Raquel break down in the end, but encourage you to find out for yourself.

The story and dialogue between all the characters were realistic and the book in general was very well written. I highly recommend it for those who like romantic dramas.

I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series because I have become attached to the characters and like the author's style.

Breaking down by Calista Smith pulled me in and seduced me with the realistic characters and the intriguing plotline. It was easy to get absorbed into the story. Tugged on my heartstrings every step of the way. I felt this to be relatable which made it that much more entertaining.

The vivid descriptions and dialog made this a really good read. The emotional ups and downs had me biting my nails. Was hard not to get wrapped up into the drama. That is what I love about a good book. Makes you feel all different kinds of things and at the same time takes you away from your own life.

Breaking Down is a great escape. One that I enjoyed from beginning to end. Pleased to know that there is more on the horizon.

Quote ~

I struggle with my feelings. I’m torn again with Dante. Is he setting her straight? Is he sparing my feelings? Does he still love her? Does she have something on him? Is he keeping something else from me? I hate that once again Dante and I are in a predicament and I am the one left hurt, I can’t help but hear my mom’s words and wonder if she was right…”

I don't usually gravitate to YA books but I happened to win this book in a contest. I have mixed feelings about this book that I'm giving it a 3.5 star rating. I did like the characters but got very confused with their names & nicknames & many similarities in the nick names. It got totally confusing for me.

I also couldn't take the drama. It was way to much for me but I am a 42 year old grown woman, not a high schooler. I found myself wanting to smack some of these characters for their immature behavior but then I'm sure my friends & I were just as bad all those eons ago in school.

I did love the storyline as well as the growth you could see happening in the characters. I loved how after having a major life changing event take place those that needed to took it very seriously & tried to make the best decisions they could with the circumstances being what the were.

I will definitely read the next one in the series when it comes out because I just have to know how it works out for them!!

Breaking Down
by Calista Smith

An emotional teenage rollercoaster of love and loss.

I was provided with an copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Raquel is a girl trying to rebuild her life. After being mercilessly bullied in her own school to the point that the happy family she grew up in falls apart, she is anxious to be starting a new life in a new school.

Dante is a popular attractive male with a reputation of being a womanizer. When he meets Raquel however sparks start to fly. Will he be faithful to her and develop a relationship with her, or will he fall back into his relationship with his ex-girlfriend because it was comfortable.

Overall I thought it was a good read. Both characters have personality defects that at times made this writer want to read into the book and shake them. It was a very emotional read and a good start to a new series.
