The United States has collapsed. Those citizens who are left are in one of two classes. One: Citizens who have undergone forced lobotomies, as mandated by the United Nations. Two: Those who fight against their tyranny.
Petra Kingsley falls under both classes. She falls in line with the drones, pretending her procedure worked. She’s existed among their ranks, hiding in plain sight, being worked to the bone and starved almost to death.
Lawson is a bounty hunter of sorts. His target isn’t the guilty, it’s those who are lost in the folds of a broken society.
When he spots Petra working in the masses, he stops at nothing to help her escape.
But he has no idea who exactly he’s helping—and who will now be hunting them both?
Lila Felix is full of antics and stories. She refused to go to Kindergarten after the teacher made her take a nap on the first day of school. She staged her first protest in middle school. She almost flunked out of her first semester at Pepperdine University because she was enthralled with their library and frequently was locked in. Now her husband and three children have to put up with her rebel nature in Louisiana where her days are filled with cypress trees, crawfish, and of course her books and writing. She writes about the ordinary people who fall extraordinarily in wild, true love.
In these times, the voice of another human, especially one you cared for, was magic and when they spoke to you, you sat on the edge of every word, desperate to jump onto the edge of the next. You longed for the camaraderie of others. How things had changed was astounding. ***
Running for your life is not as glamorous as some people think. Ok, nobody really thinks that. There is sicknesses that have bodily fluids flowing from all ends. Toilet paper and even toilets are hard to come by. In fact, they're damn near extinct. But when the alternative is becoming a manmade working zombie fashioned at the hands of the government...lack of toiletries ain't so bad. Not bad at all.
Petra is up to her eyeballs in sickness at the camp, constantly cleaning and taking care of others who are plagued by the illness. In her free time, she worries about Lawson and if he is ok. She also worries if he feels the same about her as she does him. Or wonders if she is just another Grainer. Someone he can help out of their situation and send on their way to a better life; never to look twice at again. But now that Lawson is back, things turn interesting. Now it is time to see how he really feels...
*** I didn’t know what exactly it was about her that sucked me in and kept me tethered. But I wanted nothing else in this tiny life than to be tethered to her. ***
I was so glad to see an ARC of Phase 2 of FORCED AUTOMY sitting in my inbox. I didn't even know she was close to getting it out yet. I immediately dug in late that night and immersed myself back into this crazy, messed up world Felix presented to us for the first time last month. I dig that she isn't sugar coating things and letting characters get away with things that normally would be hard to come by in a world that has fallen. It feels real and it feels raw and it's absolutely disgusting. I love it! And it doesn't take long to figure out the villain you're sure to hate and the characters you know you are going to love when it comes to this series.
*** I looked up to the sky but it too caused me pain in the form of a bee sting in the corner of my eye. From the position of the sun, I could see it was almost four in the afternoon. Shep taught me that. He also tried to teach me how to make fart noises with my armpits, but I formally declined. ****
The best part was the growing relationship between Lawson and Petra. There wasn't much of a relationship in Phase 1, but like I thought, Felix gave us more of them in Phase 2. More feelings to explore and more needs to be had! I love these two and look forward to just more of them together.
*** “Tell me what to do. Tell me to stay. Tell me to go. Tell me that you will be okay if I leave.” Selfishly, I answered, “I won’t.”
****
“Why are you so brave?” “Me,” I pointed to myself. “Yes, you. I think that’s the first thing I liked about you. You were gonna fillet me like a fish with that comb.” “I would’ve,” I squinted at him. “So tough—and so damned pretty. Let’s go eat frogs.” ***
After finishing this Phase I am desperately needing more. All hell is about to break loose and I am just going to kick back and grab some popcorn...because it is going to be awesome! This series is an addiction I don't want a cure for!
Ok so here’s the thing for how short this book is I would like to have a clear picture of where this book is headed and I don’t see that. I just don’t want this to turn into a hot mess in the last two short novellas because the author is trying to finish everything up really quick.
Before I start my review of this amazing story, I have to tell y'all a few things I've learned from my girl Lila's book. One: The more I read about Lawson the more I fall in love with him. I honestly didn't think I could have a favorite book boy out of all of Lila's yummy leading men, but there's just something about Law. *sigh*
Two: *Note to self* Clean out my husband's closet and begin to hoard as much medicine as humanly possible, when the hub's closet is full move on to the children's. Now when I say medicine, I mean everything from Advil to prescription drugs. The last and most important thing I learned while reading Forced Autonomy is two words TOILET PAPER. You can never have enough toilet paper, trust me y'all.......
We are thrown right back into Lila's raw and sinister world in Phase Two. Lawson is out scouting looking for any survivors he may be able to bring back to the safety of the camp, but his heart is consumed with everything Petra. He's confused and a bit lost because he's never felt this way about anyone and wonders if there is a place for love in cold world he lives in. Unable to take the distance, he caves and heads back to camp and Petra *sigh*
Meanwhile, back at camp, Petra has been going through the motions of her daily chores while trying not to think of Law (not that it's working). She becomes distracted when a nasty virus hits the camp, remember what I said about toilet paper??? *shudder* Law returns to find Petra nursing the camp back from the brink of death.
Their reunion is brief as Odin *growl* forces Law to leave camp again, the unspoken threat of harming Petra if he chooses to stay hangs in the balance. This time Petra refuses to sit idly by and watch Law leave not knowing if she'll ever see him again.
She makes a dangerous decision and sneaks off with Law. The two find an old house on the side of the road and stop to take refuge for a few days. Running water, flushing toilets, food and even puzzles for entertainment. They know they have found heaven on earth. But upon further exploration, Petra discovers the house is not the paradise she had hoped....
There are so many things I loved about this book!!! Let's start with Lawson and Petra. Lila really begins to dive into the character's feelings for each other. In Phase 2, not only are they thinking about the other person they're expressing feelings. For example, on the way back to camp, Law comes across some supplies. Not only was he thoughtful enough to grab some for Petra, he saved them so he could give them to her privately *sigh* sweet right??
Petra also reveals her feeling for Law when she begs him not to leave camp without her. This was a hard scene to read because I could feel her desperation and her fear of loosing him.
Their love is very powerful in this story because most of the population are...well man-made zombies incapable of feelings or thoughts of their own. IF you're lucky enough not to be in a zombie-like state, everyone you know is so why take the chance of loving someone when the risk of loosing them is so high?
Lila also gives us a little peek into what Law and Petra's life was like before the horror changed their life forever. It was interesting to read because it felt like another piece of a puzzle to these realistic and complicated characters.
No worries this isn't all disgusting sickness, threats and malice, Lila is a true mastermind when it comes to writing a realistic post apocalyptic story. Her characters never give up hope, no matter what savagery they may have faced in the past they know some how it will eventually all even out.
The authenticity of Forced Autonomy world is exquisite. From the smell of sickness to the longing of a true love, it will consume you. This story is extremely raw and gritty but in all of that horror and darkness, love still blooms, reigniting the faith in humanity!!
I am loving this series. Ok I am loving Lawson but I am loving the series as well.
Phase 2 takes picks up right where we left off. Lawson is away looking for more survivors to bring back to camp. While he is away he still cannot seem to get a certain someone off his mind. He decides to head back a little early because he wants to get back to camp and to Petra.
Meanwhile Petra is back at camp taking care of those who have become ill. It’s a dirty job but unfortunately for Petra someone has to do it. Lawson is never far from her mind. She needs to know that he is ok. When Lawson does come back we start to see how these two really feel about each other. But there is something or should I say someone, standing in their way. You can sense the feelings that these to have for each other but they know they they need to keep their feelings hidden. Lawson was warned in Phase 1 and that warning has not been forgotten by either one of them.
We see a little more of Odin and while I am still trying to figure him out we do get a little but of a glimpse into what is going on with him. What I do know is that he is the man that you know not to trust.
I love Petra and Lawson. I love that we see them express their feelings for each other a little more in this installment. We see the sweet side of Lawson and how much he cares for Petra. When he finds a place with supplies, he finds himself gathering items that he knows Petra will want or need. Petra and Lawson and the rest of the people at camp are just trying to survive and escape from the tyranny and what the world has now become. But you have to wonder with all that is going on in the world right now is their even room for love? I cannot wait to find out. I need the next phase to see what Ms. Felix will have in store for us, especially with the way this one ended.
This is a series I can not get enough of, in Forced Autonomy the United Nations have taken over the United States and now the U.S. looks like and is run like a third world country. After the president is assassinated the U.N. begins lobotomies on the people to control them. But there is those few that either escaped the cities before they were caught or those that the lobotomies did not work on.
Forced Autonomy is told in two-character views: Lawson and Petra. In phase 1 we are introduced to Lawson the guy who looks for those people in the cities that are hiding out or going through the motions in hope to not get caught, Lawson's job is to find them and hope they will follow him out of the city to what he feels is freedom. In Phase 1, Petra is his target and when he finally finds her she tries to shank him, but ends up believing him when he says freedom is just a short drive away. In Phase 2 we find that freedom is not always what we think it is and possibly just as worse as being under U.N. rule.
What I love about this novella series is it is fast paced, a great love story that meshes well in the story and does not take over it, and the mysteries and dangers that lurk throughout the story. When I describe this novella series to people I tell them it is similar to the show The Walking Dead without the actual zombies, meaning there is a group of people running and dodging either the U.N. or people with different interests that could harm the group, funny, one may be within the group itself.
So worth reading! Great writing and just pulls you in and refuses to let you go!
I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. Find this review and many more at http://fabulousandfun.com
I have to say that it’s kind of funny how the book world is going the opposite direction from the television world. Where once episodic television series are increasingly being consumed in binge watching sessions much like reading a whole book at once, now what would have been a whole book is being split into novella episodes so you get teased a few chapters at a time. But I digress, and I’m really just whining because the next volume isn’t out yet!! Waaaaaa
Again I find myself mostly laughing and a little grossed out by the honest views on hygiene and health in the new world. Because let’s face it, if the stuff hit the fan and we had to go back to basics of survival, the little things like maintaining basic supplies and sanitation are going to be crucial to staying alive as millions who have died on the Oregon Trail can tell you, dysentery and things like that are no joke!
Sneakily sandwiched in between the day-to-day survival, and the forbidden yet blooming relationship between Petra and Lawson is a land mine that is sure to leave your mouth open in surprise as you wrap your head around a pretty big reveal, and then really begin to question everything that’s been going on.
Between that, and the edge of your seat cliffhanger, this “Phase” of the series will leave you wanting more!
Phase 2 takes picks up right where we left off. Lawson is away looking for more survivors to bring back to camp. He decides to head back a little early because he can't get Petra off his mind. Meanwhile Petra is constantly cleaning and taking care of others who are plagued by the illness back at camp. In her free time, Petra worries about Lawson's safety and his feelings towards her. When Lawson does come back we start to see how these two really feel about each other. But there is Odin, standing in their way so they decide that they need to keep their feelings hidden from everyone.
“Tell me what to do. Tell me to stay. Tell me to go. Tell me that you will be okay if I leave.” Selfishly, I answered, “I won’t.”
I love these novella series, I'm so hooked!!! The deeper you get into this series the more you will fall in love with Petra and Lawson. And the edge of your seat cliffhangers will leave you screaming for more!
Phase 2 in this serial was pretty much on par with the first one. Petra and Law had some new issues that came up and it will be interesting to see how that goes since it ends on another cliffhanger! Thankfully the books are out and I don't have to wait to find out. Odin is getting more and more suspicious too...I'm not sure what is going to end up happening here. Again, as in the first book there were some typos, but nothing that screws up your read. The flow and writing were both on the same level as book 1. Another 3.5 book.
Lila hooked me on this series with Forced Autonomy's release. Phase 2 is simply brilliant. I love Law. He is tough, but sweet. Intense but kind. And Petra is an absolutely hilarious diva badass. I just love these two so much. I can't wait to see what Odin's psycho hind end is up to in the next installment. What a fun, yet brilliant dystopian series.
She hooked me when Petra said she would maul a small child for a bar of Irish Spring! Too freaking good. Bravo, Lila Felix.
Unfortunately I wasn't super impressed with Phase 1, but I liked it enough to read Phase 2. I'm glad I did because this episode improved a lot for me. I felt that there was too much instalove before, but I liked how this book seemed to slow it down and not make it quite as needy. And still no kissing. I look forward to the next phase.
I am so in love with the series it’s not even funny. I was a little apprehensive to start since it was not my kind of read. But all it took was a few pages into the first book and I was hooked. The deeper you get into the story, the more you will love Law and Petra. And can I just say I dislike Odin so much I want to slap the crap out of him? I can’t wait to see what happens next.
again I'm glad I finally got around to reading this series, the story keeps you interested and the characters introduced are great. and turns you didn't expect. was glad I had purchased the rest so I could keep reading as I was finished with phase 2 I really needed to get to phase 3 !!! Enjoy !!
Loved it. From page one I have been A fan. At the end I am wondering how soon until book 3? Gotta love Lawson, a protector, hunter, a man with a secret.
I really like the characters in this series. This installment wasn't as exciting as the first but still worth the read and left off on a "need to know" sort of spot.
