Welcome to New Orleans- home of Mardi Gras, jazz music and voodoo. Eighth grader Melanie Belaforte is home for Spring break and itching for excitement. Late one night she discovers a hidden chamber and a secret journal in her deceased Aunt Florence’s bedroom. The diary contains the writings of a mad woman, along with vague clues to the whereabouts of a ruby necklace that once belonged to Cleopatra. The ruby bestows upon the wearer the power to hear other people’s thoughts- even the thoughts of the dead! And so the hunt begins. Melanie, her best friend Sybil, and a haunting specter unravel clues that take them from crumbling graveyards, to the busy streets of the French Quarter, and then into murky swamps, all to find the prize. But they need to watch out, because a murderous cult is matching them step for step, and they won’t give up, ever.

What an AMAZING series! A fantastic adventure in finding hidden gems! LOVED IT!
Sara has the Emerald Ring (read about that HERE)
Now in a place, not so far away, Melanie is home for spring break.
Among the excitement of Mardi Gras, jazz band and voodoo, Melanie finds a secret room that holds a secret journal from her late Aunt Florence.
Everyone said that Aunt Flo was crazy, even mad, and the diary might prove that as it contains the story of Flo's necklace that she claims used to belong to Cleopatra.
Aunt Flo goes on to describe how the necklace can help the wearer hear the thoughts of other people, even those who are dead.
Was Aunt Flo really crazy or could she really hear the voices she claims to have heard?
And so the adventure begins and Melanie and her best friend Sybil, follow the clues to find the missing necklace.
Go with them into "crumbling graveyards, busy streets of the French Quarter, and then into murky swamps" as they search not only for the missing necklace but the other gems that used to belong to Cleopatra.
But beware, a dangerous cult is also seeking the gems....
Can Sara, now working with Melanie, find them before they are lost forever?
The search for the rest of the jewels of Cleopatra's necklaces continues, this time in Louisiana.
Melanie is young pre-teen girl living in wealth and comfort with her mother and uncle. Her mother has big plans for Melanie's life. Things are pretty normal until Melanie discovers a secret room off of her deceased aunt's room and discovers her diary. Then ghosts begin appearing and Melanie is determined to figure out what is going. With the help of her long time friend Sybil, she is able to locate the ruby pendant her aunt was so found of, then things grow more strange and dangerous.
This is the second book of the series and while it is a continuation of the story, this book introduces a new character Melaine and the original book and characters don't even come up until halfway through the book. While the books should be read in order, this is almost a stand-alone book and fills in the past book enough to help you not be lost.
This book is a very quick and exciting read. The characters are developed just enough to help you know who they are that is also perfect and not too deep for the intended audience (10+ crowd). I appreciated that this book also brought up subjects such a prejudices and what that means for friendships.
I actually enjoyed this book even more than the first and am excited to see where the adventures continue.
This is a very clean book and great fantasy style book for the young audience it is intended for.
"The Ruby Pendant" is the perfect sequel to "The Emerald Ring." We're introduced to some great new characters who experience tons of action and adventure of their own. With New Orleans as a rich backdrop to this story, you'll be sucked into a great mystery including ghosts, a touch of voodoo, and an introduction to Cleopatra herself! I'm looking forward to the next book in the series!
