An extremely comprehensive and detailed account of the war based on extensive research and study conducted over several decades. The most glaring aspect of the book is that it endeavors to provide an unbiased account of what happened in each sector on ground by extensive use of facts and figures along with extracts from Indian accounts, which corroborate the event. It's a must read for any student of military history as the author draws myriad strategic, operational and tactical lessons along the entire length and breadth of the book.
Perhaps the most comprehensive account of Indo Pak war 1965. Essence is the dispassionate analysis of flawed strategy and failures on both sides to capitulate on fleeting oppurtunities. The author in his critique as well as commemmoration has quoted the view of high commanders about their own forces as well as their opinion about their adversaries (both sides) . A GOOD READ!
It gives a detailed account of 1965 Indo-Pak War and author, being a general in Pak Army, has very accurately analyzed each account of the major battles at the end of the chapters (Chapters named after major battles/operations conducted during 17 days long war). A very good read for those who want to see how bad were the strategists on both sides of the war. It has only one drawback of being over-detailed in which the author has given actions till company level which are undoubtedly beyond the understanding of a reader who is not familiar with organizational details of the military.
Good Book in a way, it narrates the blunders committed by both political and military leadership during the famous war. A must read to derive lessons from our history
History of Indo Pak War 1965 by Lt Gen Mahmud is a work of hard and dedicated research which pivots around reasoning, rationale and logic with out compromising on fact finding. General Officer admires the tactical valor whilst highlighting operational and strategic mistakes without blinking an eye. The chapters along with detailed maps and references stood testimony of time from both sides of the borders. The book is an absolute compass for students navigating through complex events and troubled environment of 1960s leading to war itself. From the origins of conflict to the very post mortem, General did a job extra ordinaire. Each chapter with its sub parts dives deep into small skirmishes leading to operational maneuvers with critical commentary that only sane calculated mind of “hindsight” can offer. Overall, a very good read.
