After being dumped on graduation day by the love of his life, Harry Boyd, Micah Lewis returned to the sleepy village he grew up in. Living next door to his mother wasn’t his best idea, granted, but when your heart was broken, there really was no place like home.

Six years later, secure and content in his job as midwife for a local birthing centre, the last person he expected to move into Lilac Cottage across the street from him, was Harry Boyd. Seeing Harry again sends Micah into a tailspin and opens wounds he thought had long since healed. Although Harry himself isn’t the only issue Micah has to face. That would be Harry’s very beautiful and very pregnant partner, Selena.

I live in Leigh on Sea, a small seaside town just outside London on the coast of Essex, about ten minutes from Southend, which boasts the longest pier in the world. I live with my husband and two ever-growing children, who I let think are the boss of me; along with two dogs who actually are.

As the wonderful Beatrix Potter said, “There is something delicious about writing the first words of a new story. You never quite know where they’ll take you.” I know exactly what she means.

***2.5 Things That Make You Go HMMMMM Stars***

Where to start with this book? It was quite the awkward read. I'm not entirely sure that the author knew what to do with the plot of this book. Nothing fully clicked. Some things...things actually relevant to the story were glazed over, while others that had NOTHING to do with ANYTHING were described in detail.

Micah is a midwife. He moved back home to his quaint little village after Harry broke his heart on their graduation day from university. And he's been licking his wounds for six long years. The book opens with Micah delivering the baby of his best friend Sarah. And you get it all. Dilation. Fingers all up in the business. Delivering and weighing the placenta. And ooops, isn't it funny that she shit during labor?!?

Not the beginning I was expecting, but I did love Micah and Sarah's easy and funny banter so I kept plugging along thinking it was just a bump in the road. We soon find out that Micah has a hilariously meddling mother that he happens to live next door to. And then enter Harry. Harry is the love of Micah's life.....who now happens to move in across the street with Selena.

We get a very brief description of how Harry and Micah met and are told they had three wonderfully, gloriously blissful years at university. Then Harry up and left on graduation day without any explanation. Nothing further. Nothing to connect me to their past relationship, no emotional tie to their history. I just kind of thought....well, that sucks.

Moving on. Micah and Harry see each other and it's a bit uncomfortable for them both. Harry wants to explain what happened, but Micah feels weird because of Selena. And then Harry explains who Selena is. And I did not see THAT coming!

So there we have our first, WTF moment.

As Harry continues explaining what happened the book takes a turn into another WTF? It goes dark and ugly. And definitely NOT what I was expecting. The backstory of Harry's life and the circumstances of his disappearance and subsequent reappearance felt forced, awkward and misplaced. Just an odd fit to the vibe of the story, if that makes sense. It was too over the top in its ugliness for the direction the author was going in up to that point. And because of this, it certainly didn't evoke the emotion from me that it should have.

And it's just as bumpy the rest of the book. It became this wannabe charming second chance love story with this weird dark and ugly cloud hanging over it. The puzzle pieces just didn't fit. After finishing the book I could see where the author wanted to go, but the execution was just not there. Oh, and did I mention there was another birthing scene thrown in (almost an entire chapter this time!). This one has Micah with his hand up a woman's business keeping the child from suffocating with the cord wrapped around its neck. Yep...all the details were there. And it has absolutely nothing to do with anything. Just a random day in the life of Micah thrown in.

So as you can see by my jumpy review....this was a weird one. No clear direction. Poor execution. A lack of a true connection to the characters. Bizarre plot. And if I'm being totally honest, the true star of this show is Micha's mother! And THAT'S saying something when I'm suppose to be reading an M/M romance!

More a 2.5 ish read for me.

I had such high hopes for this one. It sounded just right for me. But sadly after a promising start this one went in a everything but the kitchen sink direction.

Rambling ahead

Sorry for the ramble. This should have been a fun read, sweet and simple, but for me it was just a bit too much in a space to small.

Honestly, I really love the title of this book. It fits the book and possibly new readers to the author. Anyone who has read some of her previous works know that she likes to surprise her readers. And if I'm honest, I was surprised! I knew the blurb was misleading, but it never crossed my mind that Selena was who she was. Not once. But I thought it was actually a nice twist on something that could have been really obvious to me.

Micah and Harry were a sweet couple. They'd been together in college, but then Harry dumped Micah, leaving him heartbroken. And then they meet six years later when Harry moves to Micah's home village. Things are complicated because it looks like Harry has a pregnant wife... but as I said, things are not as they seem and Selena is not who she first appears to be. I was actually pleasantly surprised when Harry told Micah who she was. And once everything is out there, the two men reconcile. After that, we get a mixture of fun, sweet, and dark scenes. But the dark ones flowed really well with the overall story.

Also, I loved the whole thing with Harry's dad. It added some drama to the story and it explained the whole Harry breaking up with Micah thing, and it also meant Harry was still a likable character. Which doesn't always happen when a character breaks up with someone who loves him. But I do know not everyone will agree with me and some of what happened to Harry is quite dark, so people should be aware of that.

Overall, this was a very interesting and entertaining story. I enjoyed watching Micah and Harry come together again. I loved waiting to see what would happen, and I was glad when I finished this book with a smile on my face.

* Contains a SPOILER.*
* A very British tale of a male midwife and his lost love returning with many surprises.

* We get funny banter, terrific birthing scenes, hot sexiness, and it's interesting and parts seem realistic. We have tall, blue-eyed Harry, who disappeared

from Micah's life years ago. Energetic, sweet Micah, is a midwife, and loves his job.

These two are very hot together, and once we hear why Harry left, we understand. This is well written with a flowing storyline.
*

Later in the book when his dad and two thugs show up, I held my breath.

It is a wonderful love story, and the guys are sizzling together. Plus the peripheral people are great, too ! But I was conflicted over the abuse of Harry, by his own Dad.
We do get to have our men saved, and a happy ending is what they need.
ENJOY !

This is what village life in the UK should be like but invariably isn't. 4.25 stars from me.

 photo goldenstars1_zps04c380be.jpg

Micah and Harry, ah Micah and Harry swoon!! Micah is a midwife at the local birthing centre and still lives in the village of Lower Mowbury in the Cotswolds...see pics

 photo un-expected2_zpsbf27aabd.jpg

AND

 photo un-expected1_zps8dfda324.jpg

for typical Cotswold villages.

Micah had a 3 year affair with Harry at Uni and was expecting it to be forever - he feels Harry's the love of his life, but on graduation day Harry drops the bomb...'I've only been using you, this hasn't meant anything blah, blah, blah' and walks out of Micah's life. Devastated, confused and hurting, Micah returns home to his mum Jenny and the village he left behind and eventually things settle down and he resigns himself to what's happened. The friends that he grew up with support him (Sarah, I 'heart' you, snark personified!!) and we pick the story up 6 years later.

Sarah's in the birthing centre producing little Algernon (poor little so-and-so) with some fairly ripe language and choice phrases coming from her mouth, and Micah who has already over-run his shift to stay with his best friend while she's giving birth, feels he can go home and get a rest. Unfortunately, his mum is in his kitchen putting the finishing touches to some food she wants to take across to the new neighbours and Micah is under orders to go with her...they introduce themselves to Selena (who happens to be pregnant herself) and a very familiar voice croaks 'Micah??'. Yes, you've guessed it, the new neighbour is Harry!! Rather than faint on the spot or start throwing punches, Micah leaves the house immediately and is followed by Harry who wants to explain everything. After a lot of explaining...none of which I'm going into now, they are reconciled and of course Harry stops the night....

 photo images4_zpseeb0cc25.jpg

This story was funny, sweet, full of nosy neighbours and friends and interfering mothers BUT there were darker elements to it and a complete controlling s**t of a father!!

I dislike the martyr storyline but this went too far. Nope, sorry:(

2.5 stars. Meh.

Micah and Harry were together in college for 3 years. Then Harry breaks Micah's heart by telling him at graduation that it was all an experiment and he's going back to real life now.

Fast forward 6 years and Harry moves in across the street from Micah. He's so sorry. He's always loved Micah.

Although this book had its cute moments, and steamy smexy times, I lost count of the eye rolls. This was one big cliché after another. And my GR friends know how I feel about all the martyr bullshit.

This was so much fun and so stinking sweet. My first from the author and I am in love with her wit.

I want to move to Little Mowbury. I used to think Cornwall was the prime UK destination from all the books I have read that talk about the seaside location but the residents of Little Mowbury stole my heart and I want to live in a cottage that has a name and where I get...

... the joys of living in the arse-end of nowhere, where every one knows your bloody business.

This story was not predictable nor expected, not to me at least. I thought it would be played out differently with the timeline and I am glad my expectations were turned assed up, because this was so good.

Told from the POV of Micah Lewis, we begin as the midwife is delivering his best friends baby. Micah is that midwife, by the way, and his bed side manner is one I would have loved to have at the birth of my sons. He has charm and snark and it's adorable. Micah is such a good man that it broke my heart when one Harry Boyd comes back in to his life. Getting the small flashback of Harry breaking Micah's heart, made me want to punch Harry. But there is more to Harry than Micah has ever known and when Harry lets that out, I saw red and wanted to punch someone else. Ugh. Why are assholes... assholes? Not Harry, but when you get his reason for staying away you will want to punch someone too or draw and quarter them or wish the likes of Black Jack Randall and his whip on them.

And yet, while that is in the story you also get these sweet, romantic, hot and plain old swoon worthy moments between the boys. You also get the amazing moments with Micah's mother, Jenny, and the residents of the village. They are characters who deserve mention becasue they are just amazing and silly and so much damn fun.

I love that we get to meet the boys who will be in book 2 and I am curious how Tom and Jason do in this village full of folks who know your every move in and out of bed and how the town manages with a different author.

A review by The Blogger Girls.

I can honestly say I was really surprised I enjoyed this one so much. It was completely unexpected. LOL! I’m a fan of Ms. Worrall, but I don’t generally enjoy babies or children in my stories, which is where my hesitation came from.

Micah, the midwife, is a really sweet guy, with a great sense of humor. He has his life basically together after what he thought was the love of his life, dumped him hard on their college graduation day. Some of my favorite scenes are with Micah and his friend, Sarah, whom the story opens up as Micah is delivering her sixth baby. They share a great friendship loaded with funny dialog.

Anyway, Micah’s ex, Harry, moves in across the street with what appears to be a very pregnant wife. But, all is totally not as it seems, nor was anything about Harry and Micah’s breakup apparently. So, there are a lot of un-expecteds happening throughout this story.

These two get a second chance, even though they hit some bumps before they reach the end. They made a really sweet couple, and I found it didn’t take long before I was cheering and rooting for them. Throw in some really great/crazy townsfolk and family members, and this is just an all-around feel-good read. The resolution at the end seemed a bit rushed after the pacing of the rest of the story, but it was a well written, enjoyable read.

I wish I liked this one better than I did. I had such high hopes. I'm a HUGE Lisa Worrall fan and remain so but this one was a dud for me. Why? Harry and Micah. I get that Harry dumped Micah for a reason (I'll even go so far as to say a noble reason) but the bottom line is that it DESTROYED Micah. And for the next six years (count 'em S-I-X mo'fo years), he suffered that rejection. So, it challenges the bounds of reason that one (count it, O-N-E) convo can resolve and dissolve all that hurt. Um, nope. I didn't buy it. Plus, if Harry was so noble, why wasn't he honest with Micah to begin with? Ugh. It just irked me.

Secondly, Micah swung from distrustful and pissed off (rightly so) at Harry to oh-you-are-the-love-of-my-life. Are those rays of sunshine beaming from your ass? Yuck. I'm all for romance but this was sickly sweet, which was especially unpalatable given that I hadn't bought the lickety-split reunion to begin with.

Lastly, the showdown with big, bad, and abusive. What. Was. Up. With. That? The to the rescue? Holding pitch forks pots, pans, and price guns? Really?!? Ridiculous.

Bottom line: I LOVE Lisa Worrall's work. I just didn't care for this one.

I HATE to say this. I mean, really I do, because I am a HUGE fan of Lisa Worrall and I wanted to rate this higher. With that said, I have to give Un-Expected a 3. Why? I'll tell you, but first what I did really enjoy. The small town! EEK! I am from a small town, where everyone knows everyone, so it brought back some memories (like the bar scene when Maggie called Sarah!) Bestie Sarah, yeah, I loved her. Some may find her annoying, but I loved her. The midwifery job. I had a midwife for my first daughter, then moved to a state where they are illegal (I know, a shame), but I really enjoyed the birthing scenes.

What I didn't like? Too much sex for the sake of sex. I think I am getting old, since I just said that.

What else? Let's see here, Micah and Harry are a perfect closeted couple at uni. Graduation day comes along and bam Harry dumps Micah. SIX years later, Harry moves to the small town Micah lives with a tragic story.

A name change bothered me: Harold Wainwright became Harry Boyd III.

Tom and Jason????

Overall, I think if Micah and Harry took their time and talked more I would have liked this more. But, it was just too much too fast for me. I guess I like groveling too much ;)

A quick read, easy on the angst despite alluding to a traumatic event. As an English person it was a refreshing theme to see so many English terms and references scattered about. I'm not convinced forgiveness would be so quick in coming but it was still a well written fun read.

There was lots I liked about this - the small town scenario, the humorous interfering neighbours and friends (not to mention mothers!) and the midwife as a job.

I really liked Micah, but I think we could have got to know Harry better. He was only ever apologetic or horny. I would have liked to have seen more sides of him.

I found Harry's dad side plot a little too melodramatic and since a lot of the romance depended on that element of the narrative, this took a bit away from the relationship for me. I found it difficult to believe Selena would emerge so intact, so healthy.

There was a moment late in the book where Maggie's chef was called 'Rich', even though he had left and been replaced by Jason previously, so again that pulled me out of the moment.

But there was humour, and pathos and two boys finding their way back to each other. I loved all that.

Gosh, I liked this book well enough. I finished it a few days ago and have been very busy ever since. Now? I just remember it was kinda sweet, and silly in parts... particularly at the end and pretty unbelievable and actually, now that I think more on it, sort of ticked me off. I guess this is a 2.5 star read for me.

The situation in which these characters find themselves in is my biggest issue. The reason for the big dumping/separation between the MC's. The fact that Harry let this shit continue to happen, even after college, astounded me. I know it happens, but I have a hard time believing that he never went for help.

Okay. That's enough. If I go on, I'll end up telling you too much and spoil the whole damn book.

One thing I really liked about this book was the gay man being a midwife idea. So many books portray gay men as being afraid of or disgusted by a female's body and this was a cute and refreshing change.

I thought this book had potential that was never actually realized. The initial conflict was resolved way too early, and not much else was left to hold my interest after that. The remaining conflict was predictable.

Even so this was a quick, easy read with a sweet HEA.

While Harry and Micah are hot and definitely belong together, they made up way too freaking easy for me. Micah should have made it way harder for Harry to get back in his good graces. I loved the idea of not only a midwife, but a gay one at that!

Original Blog Post: http://headouttheoven.blogspot.com/20...

This had a huge promise, based on the blurb. It was a bit unexpected at the end.

Here we have Micah Lewis, a midwife in the village of Little Mowbury, where the life was lazy, sleepy, relaxed. The only exciting thing happening in his life was when his mother unexpected drops into his home. Blame him for this when he gave her the key. When a couple moves into the house across the street, it raised the bar of excitement. Until he meets the pair.

Harry Boyd was Micah's ex. The same man who left without a notice, breaking his heart and ruining it for anyone else. Now he is back and wants Micah back. Will Micah allow him into his heart once more?

The life and career of Micah are fully explored in this tale of romance rekindled. The readers are up for some interesting and gross details which were hilarious if they were not so real and dangerous.

The two men's romance was very HOT! They missed out on their enjoyment for six years and are more than making up for it. Their friends and family were all thumbs up so there was really no angst going on, nor any drama to ruin the romance.

There was a nice twist to the story here and it would not do right to ruin things. It is unexpected and it made up for an interesting read. The reasons behind it sets the course of Harry's decision over his relationship with Micah all those years ago.

Harry's father is the one individual who has made a huge impact on both these men's lives and it seems that he is past all sense of morality or even logic. He will go through any lengths to ruin the relationship.

And here I am now having a bit of a problem on some details. Harry did explain that his father was one Harold Wainwright, a powerful member of parliament. Boyd was Harry's grandmother's maiden name and he had used that name while in university with Micah. This was still the name he used. Thing is, at the peak of the drama, this same father was referred to, several times, as Harold Boyd III. This is where I scratch my head and just give up.

That is a small detail and really, it does not ruin the story. What does ruin it for me is: the story felt rushed and there were just too many erotic scenes between the Harry and Micah (which were well written) but did not really contribute much to the development of their story. Which is really a pity, as this had a lot of promise.

REVIEWED FOR PRISM BOOK ALLIANCE

This book encompasses what you imagine village life is like perfectly.
Micah and Harry met at University and after 3 years as a couple Micah is in love and believes he has found his forever. Nothing comes as more of a shock to the young man when after the graduation ceremony he finds Harry packed and leaving. Harry tells Micah it was fun whilst it lasted but he isn’t what he wants and walks out of the door.
Micah is taken home to by his mother and it is a long road of recovery to get over the rejection and heartbreak. Six years later he still lives in his small home village and works as a midwife. When he pops over the road one morning with his mother to welcome the new neighbours the bottom of his world drops out when he discovers Harry and a very pregnant woman.
Micah is clearly not as over Harry as he thinks and spends the next 2 weeks avoiding the man. He is angry, hurt and feeling the heartbreak all over again when Harry finally plucks up the courage to speak to him, telling him the truth of six years ago and who the very pregnant Selena really is. Once the truth is out there Harry and Micah are left to try and put back together what they started all those years ago. They obviously both still love each other and very soon things are better between them than they ever were.
The story of Harrys past is one of abuse, rape and horrendous physical violence. In an ideal world this would never catch up with him again and they would all live happily ever after....but obviously that is not the case!! This is where some magnificent secondary characters come into the story. The village pensioners were a fantastic lot and when they came in to rescue the day the picture they created in my mind had me unable to stop laughing.
This was a story of coming back together and fighting past demons to get to their HEA and that twitching net curtains are sometimes a very good thing!!!

Micah is a midwife for his small English village. The story begins with Micah helping his best friends, Sarah and Gary, birth their baby. I loved the relationship Micah has with Sarah – they are more like brother and sister, with all the bickering and snarkiness overlying loyalty of steel. They were awesome together. Micah is godfather to this new life and all is going well.

This happiness is dampened when his meddling mother drags him over to meet the new neighbors, a lovely couple. When Micah comes face to face with the man who ripped out his heart on graduation day it’s all he can do to maintain a brave face. Kudos to his mom, Jenny, for not lashing into Harry right then and there.

We get the story of how Harry and Micah met in college, their relationship and then how Harry was the cruelest, coldest man on the planet when he ended it. I read it thinking, Harry will never be able to redeem himself after these words.

Of course, there is more to the story than meets the eye. It is here that I questioned a bit, because they were so in love in college yet Harry never once even mentioned his family? I understand why they wouldn’t visit or anything but keeping something that big, well, I wondered how committed Harry was back then. The bigger issue for me was just that Micah gave in too quickly. Micah has been heartbroken for six years! I felt like there needed to be more than the one big conversation about it and then everything was okay. I wish Sarah had been there for it – she would have made Harry squirm.

The whole reason behind Harry’s actions is a bad one related to his family and I wondered how someone like this was in a position of power.

I admit I loved the midwife aspects of the story! Micah is good at what he does and the whole thing was so interesting.

Enjoyed this MM Love story and found it totally un-expected!! The story line was good and the characters were well developed. A story of a love lost 6 years prior only to find each other again. Micah was devastated when Harry walked out of his life with no explanation and he never got over that loss. When Harry shows back into his life with his mother pregnant, the whole story comes to light! The two still loved each other...Harry and his mother had been abused by his father, who was an important man in government, they had to get away. They ended up across the street which is where Harry wanted to be. The only place Harry felt safe was with Micah... There are some dramatic parts of the story, but the best part is their love mending both of their lives.. Sweet story, heartwarming..

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.5 stars

I dearly enjoyed this story. It was a sweet story of meant to be and reconciliation. This author took a pretty common storyline and made it her own, which is always a plus for me. I enjoyed the tension and love in this book. Second chances and family are the theme of this story. The struggles and issues that these men face are affected by their past, and how they handle them this time around will affect their future. I was drawn into this story from the first scene and glue to the page until the last. I enjoyed it immensely.

I loved this book!! Actually what I really loved was the village, one where you can't sneeze without everyone passing you tissues. The sense of humour that runs through this book is just fantastic, I may have snorted more than a couple of times. I love Harry and Micah, and Micah's Mum and ..... look just assume I love everyone. The boys story was a little heartbreaking, Harry's devotion to his Mum amazing and his Dad did deserve those extra kicks, I could have given him a few myself! This really did conjure up images of England for me, just a total joy :-)

This book was good... it could have been great, but it also could have been a whole lot worse. Micah and Harry were lovers at uni until the day that Harry just up and walked out leaving Micah devastated and trying to forget him for the next 6 years. This is the story of their reconnecting... and the reasons behind Harry leaving to begin with. There are some really tragic parts to this story, along with some really great moments. Definitely worth the read and I'm looking forward to the sequel.

Lovely Beginning to a Sweet Series

Micah and Harry together again, what a confrontation awaits! Well, not really, because Harry is not as bad as Micah remembers and Micah is not as astute as he thinks.

This tale, somewhat convoluted in plot, is still loaded with terrifically developed characters who will make you laugh, shed a tear, and keep turning the pages. A very unique setting in a very unique village with a very unique plot twist. Delicious!

I liked the humor in this book - some of the dialogue was priceless, so if you can by-pass the quick reconciliation between lovers that parted for 6 years, you'll have fun with this one. I really enjoyed the village life shown in this story and the quaint and funny characters created for a meddling small town.

Sweet little story...

Thoroughly enjoyed this sweet and romantic story. Micah & Harry are the protagonists but the cast of characters made this story such a treat...I laughed so hard at one point, I think I hurt me. I enjoyed the apparent real life scenarios, particularly Micah's midwife work and the relationship with his mother and his car....a great romantic story...

Great characters, cute, funny, sad and some angst thrown in. No sex overload, fits within the context of the story. I just wish it was longer and there was a little more depth. This is the first book of a series but can be enjoyed as a stand alone; the main characters got their HEA.
