On the last night of a boring assignment, government agent Dean Dilton’s search for excitement leads him to the enigmatic Marlow, a bank robber on the run.
When the two meet up via a dating app in the desolate town of Paradise, a once-prosperous roadside destination for honeymooners, their night takes a dark and dangerous turn.
Falsely arrested on charges of deviant behavior, Dean and Marlow find themselves at the mercy of a hot-tempered hangman judge who swiftly condemns them to a lifetime of cruel and unusual punishment.
With trouble mounting and new threats lurking around every corner, Dean and Marlow must put aside their differences and work together—or they’re never going to make it out of Paradise alive.
Retro horror author Stephanie Sparks writes stories reminiscent of classic '70s and '80s slasher and monster movies. She loves scream queens, final girls, and the masked maniacs who stalk them. Her books feature action, thrills, dark humor, and sarcasm. She prefers cats to people and when she's not lost in a paperback from hell or listening to 1980s movie soundtracks, she's daydreaming ideas for her next book or writing furiously. She's currently working on her next novel.
Stephanie Sparks never disappoints. I have loved every single one of her books.
This story puts together a very unlikely pair in the middle of the US, in a desolated town called Paradise.
They meet through a dating app and decide to meet at the only diner in town. A federal agent and a criminal will have to join forces to quite literally survive the night.
Excellent writing and a fast paced story full of action and twists. The further we dive into the story, the more disturbing it gets.
The book also offers great body horror as we are used to from Stephanie and many violent and bloody moments.
This is a fun and intense ride to hell. The relationship between Dean and Marlowe was just exquisite. Such a dysfunctional funny pair that brought me so much joy in such a dark story.
A true story about survival and the darkest and more disturbing corners of the human mind.
This is one wild ride! Federal Agent Dean and con-woman Marlowe use a dating app and meet in a motel room in Paradise. They are arrested and sentenced to 40 years hard labour. Of course, they escape and they run into all sorts of trouble trying to get out of this small town built on a toxic waste dump.
This is simply hilarious. Full of slapstick shenanigans and a horror-filled plot. Think of a police officer who can't die, hellhounds and a house full of deadly booby traps. The chemistry between Dean and Marlowe is perfect and I felt anxious about their survival in this high stakes quest for freedom. This is straight out silliness and not my next favourite book but will certainly keep you entertained.
Stephanie Sparks' novel One Helluva Night hit all the right notes for me. If you've read the blurb, you know it's a heartfelt tribute to the 1991 movie Nothing But Trouble. It's funny, feels fresh, and each paragraph comes up with something weird or crazy that keeps you invested in the characters. And it doesn't let go until you've reached the final chapter.
It must have been one helluva challenge to write it. If you like your weirdness over the top and completely off the rocker, this is a novel you don't want to miss!
