An excellent dark series by leonidaslion. I took the suggested short-cut reading Heart of a Wolf, Strength of a Bear, and Interlude: Veritas before proceeding to the major work The Fetters of Fenrir.
'The world teeters on the edge of night, and the hunters are stuck watching the light fade from the sky. Scattered. Divided in mind and spirit. But there are other things in the night, keeping watch on the ridges and slipping through the low grass. John's boys, standing shoulder to shoulder against the coming darkness.'
Leonidaslion is a legend in the SPN fandom. When I read her arguably most famous story "The Bright Lights of Disturbia" for the first time it was also one of my first long fics in fandom and I had no idea what I was in for. Wordcounts meant nothing to me and I kept breathlessly reading the fic every chance I got on my phone, wondering 'how long is this thing?!' while also not wanting it to end.
It completely blew my mind and cemented my status as fic addict from that point on. It also traumatized me a little because Leonidaslion is unparalleled in her ability to not only twist the knife but make you feel it. She can do whump like nobodies business but it's the area of emotional devastation where she goes in for the kill.
This is all a long-winded way to say that I was scared of this monster of a story before reading it. By the time I tackled it I had read every single thing she had ever written and carefully saved until I would have the time and emotional fortitude to tackle it.
While the summary is not really helpful the tags do paint a pretty grim but intriguing picture. I mean animal spirits and a host of dark!fic tags in the hands of Leonidaslion - what is this fic actually about?
I'm here to tell you that it's one of the most epic stories the SPN has to offer. Epic in terms of wordcount as well as in scope.
I would definitely recommend following the reading order at the top of the series page and will try to give a not spoilery overview of what to expect. One thing I can already say is that it is at once not as bad as the dark tags make it seem and yet exactly as bad as expected. Since the story consists of so many parts it is possible to actually skip the 'on-screen' non-con and still enjoy the story as long as you're ok with the show level violence and some torture. And the Dean!whump of course :)
The first 12 parts of the series are Leonidaslion doing what she likes best: Retelling the first season of the show with her own added AU twist. "Heart of a Wolf" actually starts pre-series with Sam still at Stanford and Dean and John hunting. It sets everything in motion and actually gives me the best kinds of shivers on every re-read, knowing what is to come.
Reading the first couple of episodes of the show through Leonidaslions Wincest-coloured glasses and with the added twist laying over everything like a dark shadow is an amazing experience and I kind of wish she had filled in even more blanks.
"The Fetters of Fenrir" clocks in at a whopping 200K words and some change and forms the main part of the Verse.
'How far would you go to reclaim the other half of your soul?' - the answer, when it comes to Winchester brothers at least, has always been 'to hell and back'.
There is no way to talk about this without spoiling the fuck out of the amazing twists and turn so I'm going to say this: It is entirely told from Sam's perspective. The dark!fic tags come into play here and Dean will break your heart too many times to count. He goes through hell and then some but there is no sexual violence on-screen except in some short flashbacks.
It is not a spoiler to say that Sam gets reunited with the other half of his soul at the end of their ordeal :)
The next branch of fics are a couple of stories filling in the blanks after Fetters of Fenrir and I love Leonidaslion for giving them to us. I appreciate that she takes her topics seriously and gives us insight into the necessary healing after the harrowing experiences.
'Gates of Gamr' is a collection of timestamps after Fetters of Fenrir and the first branch marked during the Arena is pretty much where the hurt lives. It details Dean's personal hell from his perspective and I would advise to read the tags carefully and skip it if you need to.
The timestamps after that are the reason why I described this story as epic in scope at the beginning. This is where the Winchesters go from hunters to legends and where the true magic of this series lies. It's a shame that the author only sketched this out in scattered time-stamps and yet at the same time it feels perfect.
I re-read this epic once a year and keep being suprised and moved all over again by the talent and creativity that went into making this.
It's an utter fandom classic that deserves easily as much love as Leonidaslions other famous works.
This is hands down THE BEST Supernatural fanfiction I've ever read. This is the 3rd time I've read it since it was published. I recommend it to all my friends when they ask for good fanfics. I think if this were written as an original story and not a fanfic, it would have taken off and gotten very popular. The writing is just amazing. Every character is depicted as they are in the TV show and that's my biggest problem with many fanfics. I need to feel like it's something that could actually happen. There needs to be a build up and a background and a feasible plot. This story accomplished all that and more. It's a long read, too. I would guess around 400-500 pages, if not more on a kindle. If you only ever read one SPN fanfiction, make it this one.
For 1000 points, Alex, who is absolutely foolish for putting off this masterpiece for months? It would be a cold day in hell before leonidaslion writes a bad fic. Other than the abruptness of Sam's attraction at the beginning, I love, love, LOVE this, especially for not leaving me with nothing but my eyes to weep with.
