About the author

I am an educator, author and traveller. My writings have appeared in The Speaking Tree (Times of India), Woman’s Era, Alive, Infinithoughts, SivanaSpirit, Women’s Web, EfictionIndia and Induswomanwriting. My stories and poems have been anthologized widely. I write a weekly editorial, Odds and Evens, for a Social Journalism platform called Different Truths. I am also an eminent book reviewer and have been reviewing books for Penguin, Rupa, Hachette India and Half Baked Beans for more than half a decade.

Salad days book is collection of short stories each depicted a different type and story of individuals. The book took me through loss, destiny , sacrifice and societal problems of love. All the stories are concise and easy to read. This book definitely took me through a roller coaster of emotions from heartwarming stories to heartbreak i experienced all.

After looking at the cover and title of the book, you might assume it's a collection of salad recipes. However, it's actually a heartfelt anthology of beautiful love stories. Having read the book, I can't help but appreciate the author's innovative approach to its cover. I admire how she has ingeniously incorporated one of Shakespeare's idioms, "Salad Days," which refers to the period of youth and inexperience, as the title of the book.

Salad Days is a sincere effort to show everyone that love is something you can't touch or hold. It's also something you can't resist. Even when you don't expect it, love can suddenly show up in your life and make you rethink all the practical choices you've made.

I liked the author's skillful storytelling and the vivid imagery that brings each love story to life. The book is in the style of old-school love letters type of tales with a pinch of Shakespearean charm. Each story in it is sweet yet magical in its own way. If you relish dancing to the music of love and attraction, this is a book meant for you. 

A Silver Lining to Burnt Toast: This story is about a common obsession we share: big, fat weddings. We never accept simple weddings, but we always desire marriages with a huge number of people in an extravagant setup, about which everyone speaks. This story is about one such marriage between Zayn and Nidhi. Grab the book to read about the celebration and chaos in this love marriage. 

Blind Luck: This is a tale between Purab and Preeshi, where twilight brought hope, letters brought back memories, and bottles carried messages of love. I really wish this was my story, but, alas, my Romeo is not a reader. 

Salad Days: This will be my favorite story in this book. It's a nostalgic memory of the one who was a timeless and resilient lover. 'A woman's heart is a deep ocean of secrets'—this s story shares these words. 

The Quixotic Vacation:  This is the most painful story in this book. A girl was emotionally abused by her uncle after she lost her parents in an accident, and today the young woman struggles in her journey through life. 

The Whimsical Flautist: 'Here was the flautist who had stolen my soul with his music. And here was I, the mad artist who had already started painting a fairytale in my mind.' This is a glimpse of that mysterious tale of attraction.

Rendezvous with Happenstance is about digital conversation and its feelings. Good Riddance is an enemy to lovers of the of the romance of creative professionals. Untethered Hearts is the last story in this book, but also a very unique one; this is about a NO after some strong attraction.

Anthology of contemporary romance set in India

This is an anthology of eight really short stories on the general theme of love. These contemporary romances are set on a diverse set of characters and themes. They range from societal demands on relationships to finding about ones grandma's long lost first love, from love blooming in a bookstore to love losing out to pragmatism. Each of these stories is easy to read with the entire book not taking more than an hour and half to complete.

I liked each of these stories and especially their varied natures. I loved the strong characters. There is an aroma of feminism in this book, the right kind of feminism. This is apparent in the strong female leads, their practical approach to life and their struggle with societal norms. That is one aspect of three book which captivated me. However, I was disappointed in the abrupt yet pithy endings. This made the stories read more like chapters than making them whole in their own rights.

Overall this is a nice one time read that can be completed in one sitting. It's a book that makes one introspect and interpret love in contemporary India.

The stories are a mixed bag including love, happiness, separation, longing and unrequited love. From a couple's struggles to overcome their families' opposition to their union to an unexpected connection with a stranger. A grandmother's tale of sacrificing love and the reconnection with an old flame, each story takes a unique look at love. The stories more often than not don't end in a happy ending and often with an unexpected twist.

What sets this collection apart is the ability to blend dreamy romance with a touch of reality. The stories are like poetry expressed in prose, often offering just a glimpse into the lives of the characters and the way they deal with the life's complexities. The endings are abrupt at times, but each making you ponder.

Overall "Salad Days" is an engrossing collection of stories taking the readers on an emotional journey with unique stories and powerful narration. A great read overall.

There are eight different stories in this book showcasing different forms of love. The portrayal of societal challenges to love stories is showcased in Zayn and Nithya's story, where the couple decides to marry despite being from different castes.

Also, there was another story of two people where the male is an imposter and shows the betrayal in a relationship.

Like these two, all the stories show different forms of love and all one was good to read.

The writing is simple and easy to understand. The only problem I felt was many of the stories didn't have a proper ending and were in a rush. Like the story got a good build-up and ended abruptly. But definitely, for one who loves to read short stories, this will be a great read.

A beautiful collection of eight heartfelt stories full of nuances of human emotions. The stories are youthful and energetic. They are quick paced yet embrace human feelings to the fullest. The stories make you feel love , loss , unfulfilled love , societal judgements etc. It is a complete spectrum of emotions.

The eight stories all discuss a different aspect of love. From the first story of Nitya and Zain who marry despite reservations of their families due to the difference in their castes to Rendezvous with Happenstance where the story does not end as expected, every story brings something different to the table.

My favorite story was the namealike of the book “Salad Days”. It is a beautiful story of a love story that could have been.

What caught my attention was how elegantly the author has coined the introduction. The title and its significance is so beautiful. It ties the whole book together. The titles of the stories are intriguing too.

This is a short and very sweet read for readers who want some heartwarming short stories which feel like a hug.

Once I opened this book, I closed it when I finished it. The book is a short stories collection but it is a short book as well and any type of reader can read it. The most important part is the execution of the stories or storytelling is done so well that no one will leave the book after the first story.
Stories are different from each other but somewhere at the center of the story is surprised love and emotions.
Salad Days is one of the stories of this book but being a fan of enemies to lovers trope, I loved the story called "Good Riddance". I would like to share one quote from the story which will show the author's creativity - "Against all odds, our contrasting approaches sparked a realisation - beneath the surface-level clashes lay a shared dedication to our respective realms of creativity." This sentence may sound interesting. Still, the more interesting part was the emotion behind it. The portrayal of emotions and the depth of words make this book a page-turner.
The AI-generated pictures at the beginning of every chapter are very cute and relevant.

There were eight (very) brief romance stories in this book. The stories were so very short that they just came off as corny, even if I do believe that at least a couple of them might have benefited from being lengthier.

This anthology contains stories with a variety of characters and places. They had relevant, actual problems. The surroundings were very unique; in fact, I thought this was the book's best part. The author has a gift for describing scenarios, and they were varied and engaging.

The writing style is engaging and easy to read, making it an ideal read for a lazy afternoon. The characters are well-developed, and the romance is cute and heartwarming. The author has done an excellent job of creating a beautiful world that readers will want to immerse themselves in.

To conclude, these are feel-good shorties that can be read over coffee in the morning or with a nightcap before bed and all will put a smile on your face.

‘Salad Days’ by Enakshi. J is a collection of eight different short love stories flourishing different flavours of love. Written in simple language yet cleverly, the author has done a marvellous job in showcasing the realistic side of the society. The stories went smoothly and effortlessly and sculpted in such a way such that you could experience the whole book from a window sill. This book has a lingering effect after you’re done reading it and all the stories keep playing like a slideshow inside your head. Salad Days is a collection of short stories, consists of eight chapters. Zayn and Nitya wanted to marry each other, the half part of the story revolves around them.

It depicted the cast system as Nitya's parents wanted to impose their own choice prohibited her to marry a person of her own choice.

The book is only of eighty-four pages but it shot a show of an Indian culture based on class system.
There is a subplot in the book presenting another fiction.

Although I captured the blink of feminism here, but I can say the ending was not happy.
