An epic adventure with pirates, princesses and dragons – what a trio, I was sold the moment I read the blurb! Honestly wow, what a story this was. A great combination of spice and sincerity, with forbidden romance and found family as key tropes.
My family was responsible for all the pain inflicted on him. How deep did those wounds go? Is he really the last leviathan? How lonely.
[ Contains some spoilers ]

PLOT SUMMARY
22-year-old Maeve Cross, princess of Farlight Isles, hates her life: forced to do her father’s bidding and marry a horrible abusive lord and pirate hunter, Nathaniel Pike, in exchange for an army. Resolved to choose her own destiny and belong to nobody, Maeve flees her just-wedded husband and stows away on the pirate ship The Ollipheist.

It is not long before she is found and brought to the captain, the mysterious grumpy but flirtatious Leviathan. Maeve keeps the secret of who she is, scared of being ransomed or, worse, returned back to the monstrous Pike, but discovers Leviathan’s own great secret: that he can shapeshift into a sea dragon, is the last of his family line, and that he has a vendetta against her family, particularly her tyrannical father.

The more she spends time out at sea, the more secrets burst to the surface, and the more time she spends bandying words with Leviathan, the more attracted to each other they get. They decide to hook up to get their longing out their system, which only worsens matters as real feelings emerge. But time is running out, with Nathaniel hot on their heels.

This is told from the first-person past-tense dual POV of Maeve and Leviathan.

OVERALL OPINIONS
Anacostia is a screenwriter with a background in filmmaking, so it is no wonder I felt this could be made into a film. Also, she is a real one for growing up with The Lord of the Rings trilogy. I have a lot of respect for people like that.

This is Book 1 of The Guardians of Farlight Isles series.

I raced through this because it was so good! Anacostia has a way with words that made me want to join in the swashbuckling adventure. Some moments really made me feel like “this needs to be a film”. It was fast-paced and I loved the storyline, how strong Maeve is as a character who only gets stronger as the book goes on, the chemistry between her and Leviathan, the friends made along the way, and the secrets that get revealed though all quite predictable.

I have not properly read a pirate book in a while but pirates have long been a favourite of mine. This is all thanks to OUAT’s Captain Hook and Pirates of the Carribean’s Captain Jack Sparrow – and was I the only one who had a crush on Muppet Treasure Island’s Long John Silver? Anyways, I am so glad I was one of the lucky 30 people out of 149 to win this in a giveaway, because what a find! You could say it was treasure.

On my tbr list of pirate books, I have “Fable” by Adrienne Young (though it is a YA which is hit or miss for me these days, I should still like to have a go – plus the cover is gorgeous), “Second Star to the Left” by Megan van Dyke (a Peter Pan retelling where Tink falls in love with Hook), and “Daughter of the Pirate King” by Tricia Levenseller (YA book I should have read ages ago).

The storyline is similar to The Night Ends with Fire by K.X. Song, another ARC I received coming out July 2nd. The chief similarity is that both main female characters are to be married to abusive husbands but both decide to escape and take fate into their own hands, and get freedom (for Maeve here it is by stowing away on the pirate ship, for Meilin in TNEwF it is by joining the army in her father’s place).

<< Writing >>
I loved the wording/descriptions, in the first chapter especially. Very poetic.
Take the opening lines: “My life ends today.” an interesting choice of words that hooks the reader in and is repeated a few times. This is because the life she has, albeit not a great one already, is not going to be her own when she marries. This depressing imagery is continued as she describes the wedding veil “The cream-hued lace over my face could’ve been a hanging rope. It would probably feel the same.” – here we see she feels that she is going to her death.

There is a good mixture of funny moments, serious moments and steamy moments.

The name of the ship is clever as The Ollipheist is akin to the Irish word Oilliphéist meaning sea serpent/monster.

<< Positives >>
🠚Strong female character. I cannot emphasise this one enough. None of it felt too forced either.
🠚A very wholesome crew. I like that instead of them being mean or condescending everyone is so friendly and it means that Maeve does not feel so lonely anymore. That was a lovely touch. Gunner was my favourite crewmate. It is nice that through this Maeve gets a motherly figure in the form of Seabird, the mother she should have had. She is so lovely!
🠚The spice! Ooft, it was off the charts. This book was really steamy, oh my goodness. Some of the best I have read in ages. Pirate with a touch of 50 Shades.

<< Negatives >>
🠚 There was not enough action for this book to be as long as it was. I accept this is the case as it is Book 1 of a series, and a starting book is always a lot slower as it introduces the world, themes, people, the overall plot. Are there a few characters I wish we could see the backs of already? Absolutely. I am very eager for Book 2.
🠚 The world-building could do with more depth. Don’t get me wrong there was a lot of information, but I felt pieces of history were missing for example how the elves came to live in certain parts. Ideally, having a prologue/chapter giving a history of the world would help.
🠚 No map! I see she has one on her Instagram account which I hope she will put into her final version of the book.

CHARACTERS
-ˋˏ ꒰ Maeve꒱ ˎˊ-
↳ cue the songs “labour” by Paris Paloma and “Little Girl Gone” by CHINCILLA as her theme music.
I adore Maeve. A fellow short queen at 5ft 2. She stands up for herself, is selfless and learns how to fight back. She asks so many questions all the time, which I relate to. It is nice that Levi ends up indulging them and finds it quite endearing.
“No one will save you.” He was right. I had to do it myself
-ˋˏ ꒰ Leviathan꒱ ˎˊ-
↳ A captain who is a cat person, plays the violin to destress himself, protects, attacks and loves you back? Sign me up! There were a lot of aspects of Levi that I liked: every time he smiled/smirked and we got those dimples, his overall charm, his sexy side. Something about the way he pinches her chin between his thumb and pointer finger did things to me!
I wish we saw more of him acting like a captain, intimidating the crew. I wanted more tension.
I loved seeing his more vulnerable side, how he is so protective over Maeve and hates how people have made her feel like property.
“Captain Leviathan is not a man you lie to. He’s done worse for less.”
PLAYLIST
For Honor & Hoist the Colours - Peyton Parrish | Shiver My Timbers - Muppet Treasure Island | My Jolly Sailor Bold - Ashley Serena | Black Sea - Natasha Blume | labour - Paris Paloma | Little Girl Gone - CHINCILLA

FAV QUOTES
• I hated status. The parties. The complete apathy toward anyone deemed lesser. The obsession with power. It turned men into monsters.
“Burn in Hell!” “Which one?” he asked, crooking an eyebrow. “If you’re going to threaten me, at least be more specific.”
“A woman shouldn’t do men’s work.” Watch me.
Even the goddess of the sea—Cliohde—wouldn’t stand between a leviathan and something they wanted.
• Of course the next woman who got me going would be the heir to a murderer.
• I never fit in at the castle. Not once. But here… it felt right. Like I was among friends. I didn’t feel lonely. I felt accepted.
• The way she looked at everything with a sense of wonderment made her naivety more obvious, but it also made her incredibly endearing.
“Has anyone ever told you that you have a filthy mouth?”… His eyes glinted deviously, a dimple puncturing his cheek. “Oh, sweetheart, this is tame in comparison to the things I plan on saying to you tonight.”
• “My name.” “Ronin,” “Good girl…Now scream it.
– dayum!
“Thank you.” “For what, sweetheart?” he asked. “For taking care of me.”
• “What does the handbook say about this?” “There is nothing in the handbook about this!”
“A Princess rescuing a dragon,” she added, a small giggle following. “Seemed imperative.”

~The Last Leviathan~

"Pirates don't do favors sweetheart, but we reward good work."

Rating: 4 out of 5
Spice: 10 out of 5 like hot damn
Romance: 3.5 out of 5
Emotional Damage: 5 out of 5 this was a rollercoaster! We are kept on the edge of our seat from the very beginning. The bombshells, the suspense, the intrigue, the spice *internal squealing*, all of it was amazing.

This is an honest, spoiler free review on an advanced readers copy of The Last Leviathan that I received from Netgalley.

I LOVE PIRATES! PIRATES ARE HAWT! I AM A SIMP! I am also oh so cringy.

I love a good book that takes me back to my Pirates of the Carribean phase. This was just the first book in the series, and I am genuinely shocked on how much it delivered. As the beginning installment to The Guardians of Farlight Isles series it does not start slowly at all. We are not gradually introduced to this universe in a painfully boring way. We are absolutely thrown into a swashbuckling adventure that keeps you on your toes and panting for more (in more ways than one).

The plot is *chefs kiss*. I loved our main character Maeve, she was not your average damsel in distress, she got down and dirty with the other pirates and enjoyed it and I adored that about her. At the end of this story, we are left in suspense with so many questions about Maes background that I can't wait to have book two in my hands for some muthaflipping answers!!

Leviathan was one helluva man, a captain of my heart, and absolutely drool worthy. He was such an amazing character, and the magical elements in this story with him were so insanely good that I also can't wait for how his story plays out in book two.

These two together? Pour some water on me please. These two went at it like rabbits! I love the dynamic they had with the slight enemies to reluctant allies with benefits. I love a slow burn on the romance front and we were definitely left sated as they caved in oh so many times to their attraction. *Queue aggressive fanning*

The only disappointing thing for me in this first book was Leviathan did not give off the Captain persona I was expecting. I definitely felt like we could have had more moments with him living up to this role rather than what we got, and he felt a lot younger than I would expect a man in his early thirties to portray. The ending left an opening to see that growth in book two for sure though.

Overall this was a great start to a promising series by Anacostia Miller and I can't wait to get my hands on book 2!

>I was the second review! So exciting!<

Thanks to NetGalley and the Publisher for ARC. I received my copy in exchange of an honest review.

The Last Leviathan, first book in The Guardian of Farlight Isles series follows Maeve, a young princess who is forced to marry a man that she hates the most. So she escapes in her wedding night and gets into a pirate ship which is leading by Captain Leviathan, a mysterious man who can be the greatest enemy for Meave, or maybe her savior?!
I always enjoy reading Pirate books. They're like having a journey on sea with a band of people who gives you feeling of being with your intimate friends. Navigating, fighting, having drinks on deck, playing cards with the crew, meeting some sea creatures like Sirens, Merrows and Leviathans, these are all the things that I expect from a Pirate book that hopefully I found in this book.
I liked the characters and their connections but I wasn't ok with how the storyline and the plot was going on. It felt rudimentary and irrational. I mean... Look at how Maeve and Ronin attracted each other from the first sight, or how soon Maeve, an imprisoned princess for whole of her life, gets into the crew and learned to live on a pirate ship and even fighting. Is that so easy to take a sword and leading a rescue mission?! Well, I can't stand this part at all.
After all, I like to see what's gonna happen in upcoming books so I'll pick them up.

Plot: ⭐⭐/5
Characters: ⭐⭐⭐/5
Writing: ⭐⭐⭐/5
World building: ⭐⭐/5

As a fan of fantasy books, this was my first venture into pirate themed fantasy despite having some on my tbr and what an adventure it was!

This is the debut novel in this series and is a dual POV between Maeve, a princess, and Leviathan, a pirate captain. When Mae stows away on a pirate ship to avoid a forced marriage by her father, the king, and a generally terrible person, she finds herself under threat of becoming a prisoner all over again.

As the fmc who lived her life as a princess locked in a tower you can't help but fall in love with Mae as she's not afraid to pull her weight and speak her mind standing up to people who underestimate her! Captain Leviathan appears as a hardened pirate captain, but as harsh as he seems, there's a softness there too.

As the story progresses, feelings change, true identities are revealed, and everyone's fighting for their lives! This story was thrilling, and I just couldn't put it down, devouring it in one day.

Thanks to netgalley and Hot tree publishing for an arc of this story for my honest review. I can't wait to see where this series takes us next and is a definite must-read and has made its way to being one of my favourite reads so far this year.

I loved this book! So much! I cannot wait for book two!
I quickly found myself lost in this world and really struggled to put it down! If you love fantasy, you’ll enjoy this one!!

“Are you going to turn into a dragon right now? Ooh! Ooh! Can I ride on your back?”
“I’m not a fucking pony.”
“So I can’t ride you?”
“Not on my back.”

First off, a huge thanks to Hot Tree Publishing and the ever-talented Anacostia Miller for the ARC of "The Last Leviathan". It's book one of "The Guardians of Farlight Isles" series, and if this book is any indication, I’m all in for the whole ride.

Let's get one thing straight: this book is like a roller coaster ride through a magical zoo during mating season. It's wild, spicy hot, and full of surprises. Think enemies to lovers but with a twist—like if Romeo and Juliet were both part-time dragon tamers and full-time sass masters.

Our protagonist has a bit of a Cinderella complex. "I never fit in at the Castle. Not once. But here... it felt right. Like I was among friends. I didn't feel lonely. I felt accepted." Ah, the sweet taste of belonging! But don't be fooled; this isn't your grandma's fairy tale. No, no. This is a tale where the prince might be a shape-shifting leviathan and the fairy godmother is probably a sarcastic phoenix.

The magical creatures in this book deserve their own reality TV show. From seductive sirens to brooding dragons, the world-building is as rich as a double-chocolate fudge cake. And the romance? Let’s just say it’s hot enough to light a dragon’s breath. The enemies-to-lovers trope is executed perfectly, with enough banter to keep you chuckling and enough chemistry to steam up your glasses.

Anacostia Miller knows how to keep you on the edge of your seat, flipping pages faster than you can say "magical mayhem." The plot twists are like unexpected guests at a party—sometimes shocking, but always bringing a lot of excitement.

If you're looking for a book that combines heart-pounding action, swoon-worthy romance, and a world teeming with fantastical beasts, "The Last Leviathan" is your ticket to a magical adventure. Highly recommend!

And seriously, who wouldn't want to dive into a book where you can laugh, cry, and occasionally wonder if your Kindle might actually catch fire from all the spicy scenes? Go grab it now and join the madness of Farlight Isles!

It's been a while since I've read a pirate-themed romance, but it's my first time reading a story with a blend of dragons and other mystical creatures. It made "The Last Levithan" such a memorable story.

Maeve, the FMC, is unlike other princesses readers may come across in other traditional fantasy stories. I loved her strong character and personality. And being on a ship with Captain Leviathan and his crew was not something either of them expected. The opposites attract vibe runs deep with these two, and so does their attraction to each other.

"The Last Levithan" was an exciting story. It was so full of detailed imagery that I felt as though I was fully immersed in the story and its world. I loved the characters, as well as the romance that was built between Maeve and Levithan. And the spice was a delightful bonus as well. Who knew a pirate could speak like that? I loved every moment of it.

Thank you, Hot Tree Publishing and Author Anacostia Miller, for the gifted advance reader copy of "The Last Levithan." I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Was a tad bit nervous for this because it was my first time venturing into the worlds of non ya fantasy, pirates in any media, romance, and spicy books!! But I was immediately hooked. Can’t believe how fast I flew through it! The fact that I couldn’t stop picturing it as a tv show, and myself as the fmc should be ample proof of how much I loved it🤣 Need more immediately 😭😭😭

Review: The Last Leviathan
✨: 3.75/5
Genre: romantasy
1️⃣ emoji: 🏴‍☠️
Format: ARC NetGalley

Princess Maeve Cross has been bartered off in marriage to a royal A, if you know what I mean. She escapes en route to the honeymoon, and stows away on a departing pirate ship. The ship is led by Captain Leviathan, named after the magical water dragons that were hunted to extinction to steal their magical powers. Turns out Maeve’s daddy, the king, is actually more of a tyrant, which is news to sheltered Maeve. Captain Leviathan isn’t so happy to find the daughter of the hated king as a stowaway on his boat. Luckily, they’re both super hot, and are going to fall in love.

➕: I really like the plot! Lots of twists, cool magic.

➖: The romance was a bit over the top. I’m more of a slow burn gal- this was way too predictable, lots of cheese. Lots of sex scenes if you’re into that. I could have done with a little less and gotten back to the actually pretty good plot.

Aye aye Capt! 🏴‍☠️
---

In case you don't know, I love romantasy about pirates and sirens. And this is exactly giving you pirates, sirens, Elfs, sea dragon, mermaids, and more.

We follow Maeve Cross, who's a princess and forced to be married with a rich, awful, and abusive guy with an exchange of armies for the king. Then, Mae decided to run away and eventually meet the Captain Leviathan.

So, basically the premises are everything I love, and yet I feel so disappointed with this book. It feels underwhelming. It feels raw and like a written draft that needs to be written more. I know it's all fantasy and fiction, but I want some realistic details like how Maeve didn't feel nauseous or sick even a bit meanwhile she has never been in a ship before
I think the world building and magical system, need more work, it confused me quite much.

Plot feels rushed, romance feels like an instant-love, and I'm a fan of slow born, so 😬 I just couldn't care more about romance between main characters. The political plot actually interests me more, but unfortunately, it wasn't explored well.
When you heard of "pirates" you expect some action stuff going on, tension, and all that, but no. I didn't get that from this book, which MAKES ME CRAZY, I WANT TO LOVE THIS BOOK SO MUCH. Maybe it's not for me 😔 and the "kind of mystery twist" at the end, very underwhelming, I didn't really care what's going to happen in the next book.

As it's adult fiction, apparently there's a lot of smut scenes going on. I have no beef with smut lovers, and I don't really mind if as long as it's not over the top, dominating the book, and not making me cringe. This one, I cringed a lot. You'll expect the horniest two being and smuts everywhere.

But if you think, a pirates, sirens, elfs, magic, smuts, 'no one can touch you' kind of guy, very fast paced, intrigue you enough, you might wanna give it a try.

Thank you, NetGalley, Hot Tree Publishing, and Anacostia Miller, for providing me with this ARC in exchange for honest review.

The princess and the pirate. Maeve is a princess but learns to live in freedom with the help of some of my new favorite characters. After all, pirates don't do favors but do reward good work.
I love the worldbuilding, the characters, the story and Maeve and Leviathan together. The characters are all very relatable and I love that we get to know them so well but that some keep being so mysterious. I just need te next book now, please and thank you?

I received this ARC from the author and NetGalley but my opinions are definitely my own.

I’m going to say that this was one of my very favorite reads of the year. Dang it, I loved everything about this book so much! I’m trying to collect my thoughts. Every time this book got to a plot point where I would think “dang this is where it loses me” because I thought I had predicted the next turn, it totally spun in a different, extremely satisfying direction. READ THIS BOOK! Seriously.. read this book.

Maeve is a princess, kept secluded and naive to be used as a pawn in her father’s ploy for power. As she’s traded off into a forced marriage, one that she immediately realizes will come with extreme violence, she takes the first opportunity to run- as a stowaway on a pirate ship. The captain takes some reluctant pity on her and sends her to work with his crew and most trusted officers. Maeve must keep her true identity a secret long enough to gain her freedom, but after Captain Leviathan saves her life her secret is out and he will ransom her back to the husband and kingdom she would do anything to escape. The thread that binds their two histories together is tragic and traumatic, but Leviathan is able to realize Maeve is an innocent pawn in her family’s monstrosities. While they both try to shut down the draw they feel to one another, but Maeve and Captain Leviathan can’t help but gravitate towards one another amid insults, banter and headstrong wills… and that is all the first half! Revelations, ambush, kidnapping, rescue efforts, love story gah! It has it all.

Pirates, fae, elves, sea beasts, sea dragons, magic, true enemies to lovers, slow burn, action, found family, forced marriage, forced proximity, banter, spice (that fits into the plot so well and doesn’t overwhelm it), political intrigue. The writing is so good, so smooth and the dialogue and banter is just top notch. The pace of the plot is perfect, we get some really great side characters, love the world building. Cannot wait for the rest of this series. This book makes me so excited to see where the story will go and to get more world building and back stories!

So very thankful to get to read this ARC! Thank you to the author Acostia Miller and Xpresso Book Tours for allowing me to read and review.

I’m so glad I came across this book - what a fun, surprising, sea-faring adventure! Pirates and sea monsters and villains, oh my.

The story grips you from the first few pages and the author does a fantastic job of making it feel immersive - you can feel, smell, and visualize what’s happening (but those details don’t weigh the story down at all). The pacing is fast and the bread crumb reveals about characters and plot points had me flying through this because I was so intrigued and HAD to know what was next. A few points I literally gasped and said *WHAT* out loud.

Probably my favorite element was the crew. There were so many unexpected layers to this cast, they were very diverse and such a strong found family 😍 I loved how natural it was that there were queer and disabled people, and various races (elf, merrow, human, leviathan, and other sea creates, etc) in this world. I’m really looking forward to learning more about them all and their stories.

This was a romantasy with a fast burn attraction and slow burn romance between two feisty and fierce characters 🤌🏻 Lots of open door spice (🔥🥵), but the author does an excellent job with content warnings in the beginning of the book so you know what you are getting into (or want to skip).

I enjoyed this wild ride so much I didn’t want the story to end and can’t wait for the next installment!

Pirates, sirens, magic, greed, power and intrigue make The Last Leviathan a exciting read.

The story centres around Maeve Cross a princess hidden away and then married off to the highest bidder. She has spent her life aching for freedom with an intense longing for the sea she didn’t understand.. Taking her destiny in her own hands for the first time in her life, she runs and stows away on a pirate ship.

Captain Leviathan has three goals in life: keep his crew alive, fill their pockets, and protect them from the Cross family of tyrants. He never accounted for Maeve. Not once.

Try as they might to deny the attraction they have for each other fate has other plans. Mysteries surrounding Farlight Isles start to unravel like a loose thread. Every new thread leaves Maeve questioning who she really is.

Slow burning with lots of spice, this was a fast-paced read with a solid storyline that hooked me in. I loved how strong and unapologetic Mae was and while I appreciated Levi’s many sides and his vulnerability, I wish we had a little more of his perspective earlier on to give more depth to his captaincy role and who he was pre Mae. But the way he protected and treated her…so good!

This is Book One in The Guardians of Farlight Isles series. I’m jumping straight into Book Two, The Monarchs, which is releasing tomorrow, the 21st of Jan. I can’t wait to see how the story unfolds.

Thank you to Hot Tree Publishing for a gifted digital copy to read.

Enemies to lovers
Found Family
Rag tag team
Banter
Intrigue
Magical creatures

Imagine this: a runaway princess, a pirate captain with more secrets than a magician's hat, and a mysterious princess who's as enigmatic as a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma. Toss in some enemies-to-lovers drama, a crew of misfits, and enough witty banter to rival a Shakespearean comedy and voilà! You've got yourself a recipe for a wild ride at sea!

Our leading lady is a force of nature – strong, resilient, and ready to take on the seven seas with a swashbuckling spirit. And let's not forget our dashing male protagonist, whose charm is as captivating as the call of a siren. I can't get enough of Levi.

And the character development? Each character, from the main stars to the quirky sidekicks, gets their moment to shine. By the time you reach the final pages, you'll feel like you've grown alongside them.

As you close the final chapter, a sense of excitement fills the air like confetti at a carnival. You can't help but wonder where the next twist of fate will take you alongside these delightful characters. With hearts brimming with anticipation and imagination soaring, I eagerly await the next chapter in this extraordinary journey.

I am definitely adding this author to my must-read list. Great job with this book. It ticked all my boxes.

First off, shout out to Anacostia Miller, Hot Tree Publishing and NetGalley for giving me the chance to check out the Last Leviathan! I really enjoyed this book and I’m excited to see where this series goes.

Things I liked about it:
The cast of characters were enjoyable and fresh. Big fan of Mae’s character development, plus I mean, you can’t go wrong with Levi. Overall, story was intriguing and kept me interested and I enjoyed the concept of the book.

Things that fell flat for me:
The flow of the books was a bit stop and go and the beginning seemed a bit rushed. I hope in the next books we get some more back story for our main characters.

Overall my rating for this is a 3.75 out of 5 stars. Great first start and so much potential here!

Pirate romantasy, lots of different fantasy characters. The heat and connection between Mae and Levi is amazing. I can't wait to continue the story.
Fmc that's grows strong, don't need no man but is happy with one. Mmc wants to be the alpha, is used to it, but is willing to let Mae grow, fight by his side, and show his vulnerability to her.

Rating: 4.75/5
Spicy: 3/5

This book was so captivating to me and got me hooked from the very beginning! I typically struggle at the beginning with lots of books but I did not have that problem with this one. This book I read quick and kept me interested and wanting to know more the entire time! Loved this book and am super excited for book 2!

This book is about a princess named Maeve that is forced to marry a lord who runs away from her marriage for only to hide on a pirate ship and fall in love with the captain Levi. This book focuses a lot on healing their childhood traumas together and starting a fresh life together.

From the thrilling adventures on the high seas to the heartwarming relationships that develop between the characters, every page kept me hooked. The diverse cast of characters added depth and richness to the story, showcasing a variety of backgrounds and experiences. I loved how the theme of found family played a significant role in driving the narrative forward, highlighting the importance of love and connection beyond blood ties. The romantic elements were beautifully written, filled with passion and longing that had me swooning at every turn. Let's also include, the romantic scenes had some spice that I was drinking up.Overall, this book was a captivating and enchanting read that left me eagerly anticipating more from this talented author. Princesses, pirates, shapeshifters, sea-creatures, fae, and elves? all in the SAME book?! YES PLEASE!!

The headstrong, feisty Princess Runaway with a secret past, The stubborn, haughty Pirate Captain with a dangerous secret (and smile), the fun-loving tight-knit family of a crew, and the saucy little snippets of lies, betrayals and scandals of coup.

Talk about absolutely AMAZING!!, from the witty banter, to the steamy romance, to the pulse-pounding action, The Last Leviathan had it all from start to finish! A book with an ending that has me so excited for the next one. Anacostia Miller know how to write daring, charming and ridiculously hilarious character is just the right way.

The Guardians of the Farlight Isles is a series that will now be on my "Take-To-The-Grave" list!!

Maeve hears voices coming from the alley and hides as she watches crates being loaded to deliver to the waiting ship. She waits until they have headed back inside before opening one of the crates. It is full of pots and pans but she was able to squeeze inside before the men returned.

When Maeve feels the roll of the waves she waits a bit before she peeks out from the crate to see she is in some kind of storeroom. As soon as she gets out of the crate she can't strip fast enough. She may be down to her bloomers, but she refuses to wear the wedding dress any longer.

Now she just hopes that they are far enough away from shore when they realize they have a stowaway. A royal stowaway who just escaped from the evil man her father had sold her off to.

I absolutely loved this book! It is very well written and the characters are fully developed and relatable. Maeve is a princess who has been hidden away from the public eye her whole life. Levi is a pirate captain who lost everything at the hands of Maeve's father and he is livid to find her on his ship.

This fantasy romance is action-packed, full of danger and smoking hot. This book is full of surprises as this story unfolds. Maeve knew that her father and new husband were monsters, but she is horrified at their true crimes - especially when she learns the truth of her birth.

For those who don't like cliffhangers be aware this book is an HFN and not the end of their story. Highly recommend and can't wait to see what comes next.

Here is my honest review in exchange for an advanced reader copy.

This was my first pirate romance book. I haven’t dealt with this part of fantasy outside of Peter Pan and Pirate of the Caribbean 🤣 but let me just say WOW! I don’t want to give anything away so I will quickly say that Mae, badass. Levi, does he have a brother?! Plot, I can’t wait for the book 2. And spice, heavy on it.

Highly recommend ♥️

Mae and Levi have an amazing sexual dynamic that really had me craving their next scene. But the book goes beyond their relationship and keeps the reader engaged in the plot itself. The book had me really locked in really wondering what would happen next. I’m excited for book two and really hope that one will have a lot of world building. This series could really make a wonderful TV series as the world the author builds could be abundantly expansive and beautiful on screen. Pirates and sea creatures are a breath of fresh air for the fantasy genre, as vampires and zombies have become platitudinous recently, it’s nice to see something new and unique. I really want to see what Mae is. Is she simply an elf or is she something more?

I’d say romance novels are typically geared more towards women, but as a man, I must say that I throughly enjoyed all the adventure and sex in this book, it was balanced very nicely. The adventure didn’t feel like an afterthought to the sex and the sex didn’t feel like an afterthought to the adventure, it all worked quite well and organically together. Excellent job blending those two, Miller.

Bottom line, very good debut novel for Miller and I’m really hoping to see copies of this in bookstores and on bookshelves!

Originally five stars but after reading the sequel there’s no way that holds up.

Thank you to NetGalley and Hot Tree Books for an eARC of this novel!

Not to be that person, but I need the next book immediately! This was so good! It hooked me from the start, and I was so thankful that I trusted my gut and requested this book. I read it in one sitting (with a dinner break). It has a lot of elements I love, like pirates, enemies to lovers, and dragons. I enjoyed the dynamics and strong characterization of every character. My only complaint is that I really hate when characters use pet names that are "typical". If they fit the character, eh, but it's fine. But I will never find someone who says sweetheart or darling very hot. I know this is a personal thing, but it happened so often that I just was drawn out of so many scenes.

This was not what I expected, but in the best way!

When we first meet Maeve in the beginning of this story, she is being prepared for marriage to a cruel man. She is a little spitfire of a young woman, but she sees her future going downhill should she sail away with him to his homeland after their wedding. So she seizes her opportunity to run away and stows away among crates that are to be loaded onto a ship.

But it turns out that she is loaded onto a pirate ship rather than one of the military vessels that she expected. Instead of being tossed overboard, she is given the opportunity to work hard and essentially earn her keep among the crew. As she lives among them, she starts developing friendships with most (or at least being on friendly terms) except for with Captain Leviathan. With him, she is unable to contain her inner brat, which forms the base of their banter.

Throughout this story, Maeve has nightmares that don’t make sense. She only knows that these nightmares have been there for most of her life. This, along with her accelerated healing, gives hints that there’s more to her than what we (or even she) know! And while she attempts to lie to Leviathan in order to keep her known identity a secret, she’s not the only keeping secrets on the ship.

I loved the banter between Maeve and Levi! While it starts with him as the tough captain and her as the bratty stowaway, they maintain this despite developing deeper feelings for the other.

“Such a brat.”
“You like it.”

Their first kiss was soooo steamy! And while they try to continue to keep their distance despite the obvious attraction, Maeve finally asks for what she wants when they’ve reached Levi and the crew’s home base. So they are then determined to keep their relationship strictly physical. But every one of the crew knows that what they have runs deeper than that. And when it’s time for them to leave with Maeve staying behind, I was honestly surprised that Levi left with just a note. It was very “have a nice summer” that was written in your yearbook in school.

The climax of this story is very intense as Levi’s secret is revealed to Maeve’s husband, who is a pirate hunter, and Maeve’s father, who hunted Levi’s family nearly to extinction. I loved that instead of being a damsel in distress, Maeve was able to take her new skills and rescue Levi and the crew instead!

I loved the found family with Maeve and Levi’s crew, and the little differences in the friendships she develops with each of them. I also loved that Maeve didn’t lose her inner fire, but also needed to develop her skills over time! She wasn’t immediately great at everything. The magic in this story was very understated, but it brought a new level of depth to this pirate romantasy. And obviously the romance between her and Levi was absolutely everything!! I can’t wait to see her continue to learn more about her past and how her relationship with Levi develops in the next book!

Definitely check this book out if you love Romantasy, fish out of water, older man/younger woman, lovers in denial, insta-lust, first love, runaway bride, love/hate, everyone can see it, scars from the past, found family, banter, forced proximity, and a fast burn attraction but slow burn romance.

Words can't describe how much love I have for this story and its characters. I devoured this book and hated every second I had to put it down for stupid human needs, like sleep. The story blurb intrigued me when I first read it and I thought a Rapunzel like princess escaping onto a scoundrel pirate ship could be interesting. This delivered so much more and I am frothing at the mouth for the next book. The author teed the second book up so you know what's coming next as a general idea, which I appreciated having a tiny bit of resolution before the ending; I don't know if I could take another consecutive cliffhanger book.

Let's talk characters: Many times I will read a action packed romance and love the MMC, but hesitate with my feelings on the FMC. Often times they are whiny, naive, unable to save themselves, and fit the definition of damsel in distress. While there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, as I feel sometimes a story requires that, it is utterly refreshing when the FMC is absolutely loyal, fierce, unapologetic, and willing to put in the work. Maeve has to be hands down one of my favorite FMCs I've ever had the pleasure of being introduced to; total girl crush material. She is a princess that has been taught nothing but how to become a dutiful wife, whose only purpose in life is to be used for others' pleasure. Yet at a mere 22 years old, this woman is smart, resourceful, reliable, and doesn't care if she gets some dirt on her hands. She fights to earn her place among the crew, continually eager to learn more as she feels more and more at home. She may have been ignorantly raised, as Wraith noted, but she is hard-working and doesn't expect others to do anything for her due to her name or status. When she gets kicked out (literally and figuratively), she gets back up and strives to fight for her place again. It is extremely admirable, and I could keep going on and on about her, but trust me when I say it is impossible not to love her.

Moving on to Mae's found family, I am in love with them. They might be rough around the edges, but they are equally formidable, yet kind in their own special ways. Levi is droolworthy in every sense of the word; the idea of his tattoo reminded me of a webcomic I adore, yet it was still different enough. I have some theories on where book #2 will take us, as well as the truth around Mae, and I thoroughly look forward to reading it when it comes out. I want to continue seeing fearless kick-a$$ women, like Wraith, Boats, Seabird and Mae, save themselves and not wither at the mere existence of violence. There have been many books that I fall in love with and eagerly await additional books, but there are very few that will remain with me; The Last Leviathan certainly falls into the latter category. It had everything I could want: enemies to lovers, slow burn, anger turning to lust, magical creatures, a good mystery, and holy hell, some steamy spice. I can't even come up with a single thing wrong with this book. Just go read it and see for yourself!!

I had the opportunity to receive a free copy of this book via the publisher and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Pirates of the Caribbean with magic, mystical beings, and spice.

Maeve Cross has always felt trapped in a life she never wanted, bound by the expectations of her tyrannical family and an arranged marriage. Yearning for freedom, she stows away on a pirate ship, escaping her oppressive fate. Captain Leviathan, a pirate with his own set of goals, never planned for Maeve to enter his world. As the two are drawn together by fate, they struggle with their growing attraction, knowing their differences—Maeve is the daughter of a powerful tyrant, and Leviathan is a man scorned by her family. As mysteries unfold around the Farlight Isles, Maeve is forced to question everything she’s known, finding that the only constant in her world may be the pirate captain by her side.

This fantastical adventure grabs you from the first page and doesn’t let go, as the stakes couldn’t be higher: arranged marriages, abusive husbands, stowaways, sea creature attacks, kidnappings, and death - this book truly has it all. The action is non-stop, and I was constantly flipping pages, trying to keep up with the twists and turns. The side characters provide hilarious quips and comedic relief that lighten the tension without taking away from the high-octane drama.

The world-building in The Last Leviathan is spectacular. This isn’t just a pirate romance - it’s a whole new world brimming with elves, sirens, sea dragons, fae, and more magical creatures. The fantastical elements elevate the story to something unique and fresh, making it a true escape.

Maeve is a compelling character. She’s been stuck in a life she never wanted, but her journey of growth and self-discovery is inspiring. Watching her break free from the constraints of her destiny, explore new skills, learn to love, and find her voice made her one of the most dynamic characters I’ve read in a long time.

The dual POV shift later in the book adds a layer of complexity that I loved. The twist that comes with it is absolutely jaw-dropping, and getting into the mind of a character with more history and knowledge compared to the unreliable narrator creates such rich layers of tension. It was such a brilliant move.

And then there’s the romance between Maeve and Levi. From untrustworthy strangers to enemies to lovers, their journey is electric. The banter between them is *chef’s kiss, and their chemistry is undeniable. Their attraction builds slowly but steadily, and when the heat turns up, it’s spicy. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions, and I couldn’t wait to see where their tumultuous path would lead.

This book is everything I want in an adventure: heart-stopping moments, deep characters, and a romance that’ll leave you breathless. Highly, highly recommend and I cannot wait to read book two!

I'd like to thank NetGalley, Hot Tree Publishing, and the author Anacostia Miller for providing me with this ARC in exchange for honest review.

⭐️ 3 / 5
🌶 4 / 5

The plot:

This book follows the FMC Maeve, who follows a runaway princess, who along her journey meets our dear Captain Leviathan. Initially, I was drawn by the premise of this book, mostly because it checked all the boxes in terms of tropes, but it fell kind of flat. I had a hard time connecting with both our main characters, but also with the story itself. At some point it did feel like I was reading a script, as the monologue felt very forced or clipped at times, and that threw me a little bit off.

There were some things in the book that drew me out of the storytelling, such as why Maeve did not fall ill with seasickness considering she'd been sheltered for most of her life, and therefore have never been on a ship before. The book focused more on other parts of the storytelling, which is completely fine, but for me, I get drawn into books when the descriptions seem "realistic" (in a fantasy / fiction-way) in terms of feelings and such.

The romance is very insta-loveish, which is fine in some cases, but this felt a tad bit rushed. As this books is an adult fantasy novel, it does contain spicy scenes, which I am a sucker for. I do think the author wrote these very well, but they did seem to overtake the plot at some point. There is a very fine line between too much-smut and just the right amount - unfortunately this did end up being too much (not in terms of smut, but in terms of the plot itself).

The world building:

I also really would have liked some more world building. There was next to none in this book, but again, the author chose another another direction with other focuspoints, which again is fine - I am just used to reading books with vivid descriptions of the world I am reading about.

My overall rating is:

I did want to love this book, but it just did not do it for me. I liked the premise, and I do think the author did a good job. I just was not that hooked. I do believe that I, as the reader, could feel that the author put a lot of work into writing the book, and I will read the 2nd book when it comes out, just because I liked the plot. But it is safe to say that I wasn't blown away by The Last Leviathan. The plot is what gives my rating another .5 stars.

If you love books with found-family, a runaway princess, an overprotective pirate captain and insta-love, this book is just right for you, and you should give it a try.
