Ryker is a young man with no future. Trapped in a world that is bleak and gray, the only life he has ever known is in the Pit, mining with the other sclaves. That is until a kind sentry named Jarvis teaches him to read and write and tells him about the God of the Ancient Christians. Though the sentry is only in Ryker’s life for a brief moment, he changes his course forever. Ryker shares this knowledge with his best friends, Priya and Remy. Meeting in the Secret Place, a hidden enclave underground, Ryker and his friends begin to read everything that they can get their hands on. One day, they find a document in a sentry’s office that shakes them to their core. They learn that the mining Pit is a government program called Extraction, implemented to bring justice to society after the Great War. The three best friends search for more answers. What is the Great War, and what does any of this have to do with them? With the help of a handsome sentry who has fallen in love with Remy, they finally discover the truth about why they are there. Sclaves are the children of evil, violent war criminals. As punishment for their crimes, the terrorists were executed, and their young children sentenced to a life of slavery in the Pit. Now, Ryker and his friends must grapple with their dark lineage and ask the question, "Do we deserve to suffer for the sins of our parents?” When Priya is caught snooping around the sentry’s office and publicly whipped, Ryker resolves that he will do whatever it takes to escape this hell with his friends and protect the girl he loves. They join forces with a gentle man named Rick and his small crew of sclaves, who have been planning their escape from the Pit. Together, they adopt a new name and dig a tunnel reaching towards the outside world. But one dark night, the sentries find the tunnel and bring upon a violent tragedy to the group. When all hope seems lost, there comes a torrential rainstorm, and the flooding exposes an alternative escape route. Every time on this perilous journey that Ryker loses hope and battles with his identity, Jesus meets him in the Secret Place with love and truth. The God of the ancient Christians leads the sclaves to freedom and a deep knowing that they are loved and important.
