Boring Life #2

The Time Zombies Became the Least of My Worries

Rate this book
Ever since the zombie virus hit Emma’s irritatingly boring Midwestern hometown, she’s been on the run with her old best friend-turned-boyfriend Finn. On their journey, they’ve witnessed some pretty disgusting deaths, narrowly escaped life-threatening escapades that sometimes included one of their own pulling a gun on them numerous times, and redefined the definition of what makes up a family (as it turns out, soldiers and geeks can be pretty decent). They’ve even learned the disturbing truth behind the mysterious virus. But after Emma was bit by one of the infected trying to save her neighbor boy, she was told she would not have long to live.

In the thrilling sequel to The Day Zombies Ruined My Perfectly Boring Life, Finn will help to tell the story as Emma and the gang are faced with the most crucial life-changing decisions yet. They’ll come across an unfortunate group of rednecks, discover the truth of what happened to Finn’s federal agent mother, and finally see a chance at truly being safe without having to run anymore. But in the middle of it all, Emma and Finn’s relationship will soar to completely uncomfortable levels when Finn takes things one step too far. And between being injected with an unknown liquid, taking on a completely unexpected (and really agitating alliance), and being left for dead by those she loves most, Emma will realize that zombies are the least of her worries.

This is the second book in the Boring Life Series. I loved the first book in this series, but it left me feeling a little wanting. This book however picked up right where it needed to and filled in all of those lingering questions. This series has been one of the most fun reads I’ve read in a while. Jen Naumann has created a group of characters that are both fun and witty and at the same time very real.

As usual Emma’s wit and honesty made her an enjoyable character to read about. She still cracked jokes to ease her discomfort, but she’s grown up a lot by the start of this book. It was nice getting to see Emma shine and take charge. Her relationship with Finn was also fun to read about. The two of them are navigating their way through a serious relationship in the midst of all of this chaos and it was interesting watching them trying to be adults and lead this group of misfits, and yet they’re still very much teenagers.

It was also nice getting to see things through Finn’s eyes. The narration is split between Finn and Emma giving you a more rounded view of the story than we got in the first book, and I really enjoyed being in Finn's head. His concern for Emma is endearing and her push for independence shows character growth on her part. She’s not the same girl that developed amnesia when things got too tough. I also liked seeing how the two of them interpreted the same situation differently and it was easy to understand why they fought about certain things and why each of them felt the way they did at certain parts.

This book made me laugh, but it had its sad moments too. Emma and Finn lose some of the people that were closest to them and while I was sad to see some of them go Jen does a good job making their deaths feel necessary and meaningful. Like the first book, this is not your typical zombie storyline. It’s full of surprises. We also find out more about how aliens have played a role in this disaster and meet a few new faces who stir things up for Emma and her friends.

A zombie comedy with plenty of chuckles, lots of action and just the right amount of romance. Since I fell in love with the first book, The Day Zombies Ruined My Perfectly Boring Life, I was hoping the second would be just as much fun, and it was!

The story in book two begins with the gang heading out in search of an antidote. Emma has been bitten and it looks like it’s only a matter of time before she becomes infected with the alien virus and turns into a zombie. Unlike everyone else, Emma is surprisingly upbeat about the whole thing, telling her new boyfriend and best friend from childhood, Finn, to be sure to come back with some poison if he can’t find the cure.

Soon we’ve got kids flying a plane halfway across the country, the motley gang of mostly orphans battling zombies at the airport, and Emma developing a keener sense of sight, smell and book smarts, thanks to the alien stuff she injected herself with. There is never a dull moment in this book. Emma had me clutching my gut at times. She came out with so many gems that made me chuckle. What a fun protagonist.

“You are by far the strangest person I’ve ever met.” (The teenage genius doctor tells her)

“Sorry, Doc, but you know I’m already taken.”

Emma is a tough cookie, facing one crisis after the other with a healthy dose of fear but she never loses her quirky sense of humour. Then we have her other half, Finn. Finn sees himself as the long-suffering boyfriend (it’s only been a few days), sworn to protect the girl he loves, when, let’s face it, Emma can take care of herself. Finn’s typical boy way of thinking had me laughing throughout. I enjoyed the fact that the story was told from both Finn and Emma’s point of view. The author captured their individual voices well. It’s always great to hear what a guy is thinking.

The Time Zombies Became the Least of my Worries is a breeze to read. Witty and tons of fun, I dare anyone not to speed through it in a few hours. One of the best elements this book has going for it is the motley mix of young characters. The theme “Goonies Never Say Die” was in my mind throughout.

This is one of those times I would love to read another book with these characters. Pick this up for a hearty laugh.

I was so excited to read this book! This was my favorite series by Jen Naumann and she didn't disappoint.
Our fearless MC, Emma, doesn't lose any of her sarcasm and humor. She shows more maturity and strength while struggling with her unique "health issues". Finn remains the doting and adorable boyfriend who, by the end, becomes so much more.
This book is laugh out loud funny. It is quick paced and packed full of adventure. We are introduced to some very colorful, new characters that amp up the plot. ( Hello there, Candy!)
Still, our original gang of lovable misfits remain the heart of the story. Friendship, love and humor drive this makeshift family to survive. Of course, some sacrifices are made and we lose a few key members along the way.
If you are looking for a book you won't want to put down, this is it! It is fun and fresh and oh yeah, there are Zombies!

I was not a huge fan of zombie/aliens until I read this series. It was funny, sad, and many times touching. I want these books to made into a movie. I love Emma. She really grew up in the second book, which just means she not as dump as I first thought. I really had a hard time putting this book down. I laughed out loud so many times. I'm so happy I read this series because I almost skipped.
