I ended up really enjoying this. It started a bit slowly, and I truly believed I might lose interest quickly but I was happily wrong (and yes, I can admit it).
The characters were likable and very contemporary. It gave a good outline of the secrets that can either bring an abrupt halt to intimate long term relationships and the fear keeping a secret creates, versus 'fessing up and taking a leap of faith. The supporting actors also had well defined personalities, with the occasional spurt of well timed humour.
The mystery element continued well, with a nicely executed couple of twists towards the end. Although I had guessed the culprit, I hadn't seen the entire picture, and that is always a fabulous boon in a mystery novel. I'm certainly looking forward to the next novel.

The first of the series, "Lone" welcomes readers to the wonders and mysteries of Akia, who happens to be the only female werewolf. Ayusso has created a story that has blended Supernatural and Criminal Minds, with individual, humorous, unique and interesting characters. I can picture every single one of them perfectly, though I look forward to having the secondary characters fleshed out, as I find that I enjoy their scenes the most. A very interesting and new take on werewolves. I am looking forward to reading the second book!

a stray and rare female werewolf who happens to be a police officer falls in love with a superior officer who happens to be a werewolf Prince. They investigate a werewolf serial killer together. this promises to be a great series! wonderful characters, good plot. First read when first published. Re-read in Feb 2019. Still a great read. Try the next 4 books as well. The concluding book is promised.. reread again in march 2021.

I was given the opportunity to read Lone, Book 1 of Danae Ayusso’s Wolves of Haven Series. This is the second book I have read by this author and was interested in seeing how she mixed things up and changed her writing to accommodate another type of series. I absolutely loved the epigraph at the beginning of her first chapter:
We are all searching for someone whose demons play well with ours.
Akia de Wolfe, is one of Boston’s finest. Working her way up through the ranks into Homicide where she felt most at home. After closing a major serial killer case she was soon given a promotion but her celebrations were short lived with a simple call from someone from her past. A call that she never wanted to receive. The caller spoke only 5 words “Father needs you. Come home.” sending Akia packing and headed back to Haven where memories of her past haunted her.
Here are a couple of excerpts from parts that I really enjoyed:
Excerpt #1:
The amused Frenchman chuckled. “What would it hurt to humor your big brother? Fae only wants to help you pick a color and stick with it… What do you call that mop on your head? Blueberry, teal, turquoise?” he asked with another chuckle, eying the questionable locks of hair standing up every which direction on the young man’s head.
“I call it Smurf in a blender, but the bottle called it Atlantic Blue,” Ulrik said, making a face, as we walked with his uncle to join the others in the dining room. “Can I get a tattoo?”
Excerpt #2:
Beowulf shook his head then pushed his hand through his falling hair. “My old friend, when did we become old men?”
Louvel refilled their glasses of wine. “The moment we took our first breaths we started to die,” he pointed out.
“Poetic yet depressing,” Beowulf said with a chuckle.
“Quand on n’a pas ce que l’on aime, Il faut aimer ce que l’on a,” he reminded him; if we have not the thing we love, then must we love the thing we have.
I really enjoyed this book, there was a little more sexual content in it then I am used to reading, but I am the type of person who is open to reading just about anything, and I really did enjoy the book.
The book is full of interesting characters, my favorite besides the main characters were Ulrik and Faelan. They have such unique personalities, and give the book an air of amusement which complimented the darker mysterious theme nicely.
I am certainly looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

She'll never be aLONE again!
This is an awesome new series - it somewhat reminded me of Law and Order meets The Originals. There are cops and bad guys, lots of blood, and some very hot wolves. Up to the very end I was still surprised, I never figured this one out! Can't wait to read the next one. Some of my favorite supporting characters were Fae and Kid. Faelan the crazy Irish chef kept me laughing at his antics trying to get his sister's boyfriend. Ulrik (aka Kid) is the youngest of the pack and is the blue hair techo know it all, lots more than he shared with us in the this first book! But enough about my thoughts, lets start at the beginning with a bit to get you hooked...
Sergeant Detective Akia de Wolfe has come a long way. From a scared child in a cage on the streets of Cambodia to her current position in the Boston police force. She loves her job, loves her boyfriend, and can't wait to get the next bad guy. Except the next bad guys is in her former small town home of Haven, Canada, population: 451. She hasn't been home in a long time and doesn't want to go, but Father has called and needs her help. Can her family and love life survive this new threat?
Favorite passages:
- Since he said it was Fate, she would let Fate decide. They flipped a coin.
- "Sounds tempting. Taking me into the woods where no one can hear you scream," she said.
- "You are safe, I promise you. As long as I breathe, never will I permit another to hurt you."
- "I like your family," he continued, his attention across the rolling estate towards the thick trees beyond the fencing. "There is something about them, even the naked kid with blue hair and balls of bald steel."

- "Stop checking me out," he snapped at him. "In case you didn't hear, I am hers."
- "There was something so beautiful about you at that moment; hair pulled back in a lopsided, messy ponytail, the little drool dribbling from your parted lips as you softly snored."
- "I've always know how you feel. Those beautiful lips of yours don't need to speak the words in order for me to hear them. I always hear you, Latria Mou, even when you don't make a sound."

This story made me think of criminal minds of super naturals. I absolutely love that show and add some hot werewolves to the mix you have something extraordinary. That is exactly what this story is extraordinary.
We all have some questionable aspects from ours pasts. Some have ones darker then others. Some have a good support system to talk it out. Other's dish out money to sit someone's couch to have it all analyzed. Then there are those who block it out. Run from it. Claim that the past is just that, the past. It's over with. Done. But then in our moments of weakness that dark part of us whispers in our ear bring forth our darkest demons. The monster inside of us all that we don't want to examine too closely incase we learn something about oneself that we would never forget or live with. The darkness that consumes not only our mind, but pollutes the light of your soul. The darkness that has you afraid of you.
No one knows that better than Akia De Wolfe. She was just a young girl who was physically, mentally, and emotionally abused when her surrogate father found her and brought her home with him. However, Akia is no ordinary girl, but the only female werewolf in the world. Nothing in the world frightens Akia more the her wolf Eve. Eve is wild, blood thirsty, dangerous, homicidal, and a psychopath. Eve is the demon in Akia. The part the Akia separated from herself as a child. The part of her that protected the child, and she wants out. Eve wants to be known to the world. She doesn't want to hide anymore, and after her introduction to a certain changeling she is in more danger then ever. Akia and Eve's future is about to get a whole lot darker and disturbing. Luckily for Akia, she is surrounded by people who love her, and will do anything and everything to protect her.
Her lover/mate Damian is perfect for Akia. He is compassionate and patient. He brings joy and laughter to Akia's life. He will also do whatever he can to make sure Eve won't hurt Akia.
Now Akia's family is great. I haven't laughed so hard with some of things they did. I really liked Kid, and I can't wait to learn more about his past. About all their past's and what they will face in the future.

Akia has worked the hardest possible in order to become Boston's finest and a name for herself. Though she doesn't want the attention her crime solving abilities bring. Things are going great in her life, she loves her job, her boyfriend is perfect for her, until she gets a call from her family. A serial killer is using her family's home as hunting grounds and chosen to set her father up as the culprit. She rushes back to clear his name and catch the actual killer.
This is a slightly different take on werewolves and I couldn't help but enjoy it. This book has mystery, action and romance packed in to it. Akia's family is quite cool, they are all quite the characters and say and do some amusing things. I got sucked in to the story straight away and am going to move on to book two as fast as possible.

I have to admit it: the cover got me, but you know what this was a great little book. Akia who seems to be the only female werewolf in the world is discovered by a Beauwolf (male wolf)as feral child who has been severely abused. She is helped to recover within a slightly insane pack of male wolves who all seem to have been rescue cases at one stage or another. She leaves for a yet to be revealed issue to become a cop and meets Damien, I don't want to say more but you can also throw in a serial killer and Evil Eve???? AS a whole I enjoyed the book and the interactions between the pack members, the book ends with a dark cloud over Akia which makes you want to read the next book.

This is a completely different Werewolf story than everything out there. The fact that there are no female wolves, the way the packs are, everything about these, and I loved it! The mystery packed in with the wolf aspect was awesome. This was a great read! Each character is interesting. Some, you'll love, they are funny and will have you cracking up. I love Fae and Ulrik. The romance is sweet, and adds some interesting aspects to the story! This is a good read!

it was ok....but it reminded me too much of Bitten by Kelley Armstrong...to the point I almost stopped reading...there were just enough changes I decided to read the rest...prolly won't read the next one though

This is the first book with werewolves. I remember reading. I didn't find it to my liking. The story had so many people/werewolves it was hard to follow. I still don't understand the plot.

It was cool!! The blurb intrigued me and I downloaded the book. I enjoyed it very much. She is in Boston PD which reminded me of Rizzoli & Isles (my fav show). The suspense loved it! Loved the writing and the hooking plot. Especially towards the end! I'm looking forward to read the next book.

Fell flat quickly
Started out very interesting,but became a weaker copy of another series about the first female werewolf. I ended up loving Damien but the FH was too ... she was not very relatable.

Really enjoyed this alternate take on werewolves. Akia is badass and so apparently is her crazy wolf. Hope to see her conquer that mountain.
