I created a new shelf because of this book's heroine. The shelf is "Heroine-dumber-n-dirt". This shelf has been needed for a while, but this book gave me the motivation needed for it.

I got this book because I thought it would be alien romance. It really wasn't...to me. It's multiple alien races on this one world, battles, intrigue, betrayal and one super annoying heroine. Not that the hero was much better.

Hero is The Overloard over all the other warriors for his land. He is the biggest, baddest blah blah blah. You know.
He and his top 15 Warlords are betrayed by the Overlord's Uncle and another power hungry Warlord. They are falsely accused of heinous crimes and poisoned.
The Overlord's mother saves them by swapping the poison with a 'forever sleep' drug. All of them fall down in an indignant rage expecting death.

Story swaps to Mikayla, of the snake people. She has been given the Overlord's mother's diary. She uses it to find where the 16 guys have been stashed in her land, still in their forever sleep. Venom from one of her people can wake them.

She wakes them, they're all kind of jerks to her because they don't care for her race. She explains she needs a mate to help rid herself of the original betraying Warlord is now trying to force her to mate him.

(yawn) The first few chapters were a slog. I had to force myself to keep reading.

The Overlord takes her up on it, and they're quickly mated. He's like a robot. His race don't show affection, don't believe in foreplay, don't care if women enjoy sex etc...

I began to giggle every time I'd read how one of Vaan's warriors would put his hand on his sword, or pull his sword when Mikayla would try to kiss Vaan or play with his hair. The knee-jerk response to grab their swords got real old.

Mikayla on the other hand was like a petulant little dumb princess with her snits. Even AFTER she lies to go out shopping and one of the warlords almost dies defending her, she still pouts over wanting to "get out".

Big battle at the end, good guys win (of course).

World building is good in this start to the series. I enjoyed that Vaan is not a great lover in the beginning, but becomes a quick study when Mikayla isn't afraid to let him know that she is less than satisfied with his rutting. Vaan's issues are believable with the cultural differences described-even though it makes me think that there has to be an explanation at some point why Kabanian women seemingly don't participate or enjoy sex. 'Cause come on-poor women if that's true! I will definitely continue with this series. There are a few personal preference issues with Mikayla not using the best judgement at times, but it wasn't bad enough to make me dislike her. I listened to the audio version and the narrator, Michael Pauley, was enjoyable. I will look for more of his narrations.

More complete review to come.

I choose to read this because I just LOVE SF romance, but instead I got a fantasy romance! LOL

Anyhow, I enjoyed this book even if there's nothing new here.

It was just a nice relaxing read with a true feel of fantasy romance!

I liked the idea of a race with foked toungue, fags and venom! Like serpent-people! LOL

Also the idea of the symbiotic bug that covers the Warriors' bodies with armor! Really nice! :)

The heroine is somewhat naive and sometimes stupid and the hero is a typical chest-beating brute, but together they function well!

lots of potential but just felt like it was missing something

I loved the originality with this story. My problem was that I didn't quite fall for the characters. The chemistry was lacking. To be honest I found Van to be unworthy of Mikayla. I also found the plot to be choppy. I felt the characters and storyline lacked intensity for me personally. I won't personally be continuing this series.

Mikayla S'Apul is relying on the myth that Overlord Vaan Galip and his 15 Kabanian Warlords didn't die in a coup attempt three years ago. That they were instead placed into a trance like deep sleep waiting to be woken under the right circumstances. If anyone needs to believe in this myth it's Mikayla as Warlord Theni, Vaan's replacement, intends to force Mikayla to join with him to increase his power grid and attack the Desanis.

Overlord Vaan Galip is undeniably the most feared warrior on the planet which is why his enemies used the cowardly means of poison to kill him and his most trusted core of Warlords. However, instead of death, he's placed into stasis only to awaken through the efforts of a Raasa female who demands a True Union mating as her reward. Honor means everything to Vaan so he agrees, though he expects treachery and deception.

When a common enemy threatens, Vaan and Mikayla learn the true depth of what it means to be bound not only by marriage but by honor.

* * * * *

This was a read that has the same flavor as many of Johanna Lindsey's Warlord/Viking type books though Honor Bound's setting has a primitive alien planet civilization. But warlords are warlords which is probably why I enjoyed this book so much. Stick in the mud alpha men who think the world revolves around them meet the one female who give them a total reality check.....

I really liked the two main characters though I do have to say that the secondary cast of characters brought a lot to the table themselves. I did look to see if there were additional installments that would feature each of the warlords separately only to find there isn't... so far. Crossing my fingers that the author considers this as there is so much promise there.

The marriage of convenience premise is always intriguing to me. Can't say that I enjoyed the 'wedding'/'wedding night' much but as it does work in the overall story line plot I had high hopes that revenge would be sweet. And it was. :D. Just don't expect anything beyond a steamy romance as there isn't any adult content scenes whatsover. Personally, I would have liked more intimacy and bedroom action to have come through but in the end it's the author who knows her characters so it is what it is ... and I liked it.

I did have issues with the editorial side of things that were unfortunate. There were also scene cuts that didn't transition well and a lack of depth in the actual world building. When an author features warlords and such that take place on Earth, readers generally have a knowledge base to pull from. When it takes place in some other galaxy/planet, readers need the basics to be properly addressed. If not, it can get very confusing which was the case for me. Also. The coccar. I wanted and NEEDED to know so much more about the coccar than was provided. That's probably my biggest gripe. Overall, I would therefore have giving this a 3.5 rating but as it was more positive than negative I bumped it up to a 4.

I enjoyed this sci-fi YA romance from a new to me author. While it wasn't the best example of Warlord romance I've read, it had enough of a grab for me that I will definitely be picking up the second installment The Overlord's Heir.

This was a pleasant surprise especially since I love Paranormal romance so much!!
Not only did I get my PNR fix but I also got some of the angst I crave in reads..
The world building was imaginative and the story had a nice flow that kept me up through the night wanting to see what happened till the end..

Mikayla and Vaan came together for mere convenience and both for their own reason's.. It was sad and heartbreaking to watch how Mikayla struggled with the terms of never having the proper mating she longed for due to duty.
Vaan had me going back and forth with how I felt about his arrogant manners, he was all about vengeance and his Kabanian brother's, a warrior!!

Mikayla - Raasa race sensual and peaceful somewhat snakelike..
 photo f522d004-b782-4516-8e49-7be87a1dcd11_zps4e9671b5.jpg

Vaan - Kabanian race Overlord to their fierce warriors..
 photo b72a6061-6a49-45ec-8093-ea5a96fbe58b_zpsbb718a9d.jpg
So many times I cringed at Vaan's ignorant insincerity and cheered at Mikayla's subtle ways of getting what she wanted.……… But the ending with its HEA was so much sweeter for it...

Definitely left me with a smile on my face and curious to know if there will be more.......

Really enjoyed this book, although the shaky editing sometimes pulled me out of the story. A few typos are okay and understandable, but when I have to reread whole paragraphs to figure out what word the author was trying to use, it does detract from the story.
But overall, great story, fun, quick read.

This reminded me in a very good way of Elizabeth Vaughan's Chronicles of the Warlands. Great descriptions of clashes in culture and a wonderful romance. There were however quite a few grammatical and word use errors. I am still giving it a 5 though because I really enjoyed it.

For a 1st book in a series, IMO, the world building could have been more elaborate.
I don’t know if this series has come after another series, but it felt that way.
A lot of terms were introduced in the first couple of chapters, with just brief descriptions and not the kind of elaborate explanation that one would ordinarily expect from a first book in a series, that too in a science fiction/ futuristic plot.

Another aspect was the fact that quite a few terms that the author has used in the book, are used in one or more Indian languages. For eg -
Su-Su was the word used for the leader of the Raasa people.( made me cringe 🤦🏻‍♀️ every time it was used. Susu is a word which is very commonly and colloquially used for referring to urine in Hindi!!!!)
Ba’asi was the word used for the equivalent of the priest of the Raasa people. ( another cringe worthy usage. Baasi refers to stale / leftover / old food in Hindi)
Sakar was the word used for the poison secreted by the Raasa. ( Shakar / Sakhar/ Sakkarai is sugar in Hindi / Marathi / Tamil)
Kutthra was the description for the Ceremonial way Kabanians honored their brides by shortening their hair as a visible reminder to all that they were taken. (A dog is called Kuttha in Hindi and Kutthra in Marathi.)

Overall an okay read.

Great Story, But LOTS of Grammatical Errors

I love the stories written by Michelle Howard, but she REALLY needs to invest in an editor and proofreader. I couldn’t believe the number of missing or incorrectly placed commas and periods, the number of short choppy phrases utilized as sentences, the improper word usage and misspelled words. I almost gave up reading this book by the end of the second chapter, but finally got past that (past and passed are 2 words the author continuously confuses) and managed to persevere to the point where the story took over.

As for the story, it was an interesting tale and I’ve ordered the next two books so I can continue reading. (I think this must have been the first or one of the earliest books written by Ms. Howard.) It begins with the male protagonist, the Overlord, being poisoned, along with 15 of his Warlords, by his uncle and a renegade Warlord. Three years later, along comes the female protagonist who awakens the warriors, with the stipulation that the last one to be awakened join her as a true mate. The man she mistakenly thinks is the Overlord agrees. But it turns out that the last to be awakened is, in fact, the Overlord.

The tale is a tender love story between a battle hardened warrior who doesn’t know the first thing about love and a feisty woman who won’t settle for anything less. It’s a great book if you can manage to get past the problems described above.

I normally read paranormal romances but this one caught my eye. The heroine was smart, brave and dealt with her problems head on. The hero was intelligent and adapted to his new circumstances without a problem. A small example: part of his people's marriage ceremonies included the female cutting the male's hair short so other females would know he was taken. The heroine wanted to keep his hair long (the men of her race are all bald). When he found out this was important to her, he allowed his hair to stay long. It may sound silly but it showed that he was concerned with her feelings and was flexible. He was willing to go against tradition to make her happy. One of my favorite parts of the book was the epilogue. Spoiler***The heroine is trying to sneak out of the compound. The men are begging her to stop trying to go riding (she is pregnant). You find out that she snuck off recently and fell off her ride. The warriors were all punished for letting her get out. So was one of her people who was supposed to guard the gate. The banter back and forth between the warriors and her was amusing and clever. I hope the author plans on writing more books in this universe. Maybe one with the hero's brother? I will be keeping my eye on this author.

This book had everything I'm looking for in a science fiction / fantasy romance. A great alpha hero with hot warrior brothers (please, can we have some more?), a likable heroine (perhaps naive at times, but who earnestly tries to make her Truebond work) and enough world building and plot to make it fun. I think it's self - published, but I'm not sure. If it is, there aren't any of the issues with narrative flow or editing that you sometimes see. Will definitely read more in this series. There are going to be more, right? :-)

Lots of very clever world building going on in this story. I loved all the way the author described the different species. The give and take between the H/h were very well done and it was facinating watching them trying to learn how to deal with each other. It helped that they were both coming from a place of trying to make the relationship work to the best of their ability.

*spoiler* One of my favorite parts is that the hero hasn't been around women at all and unlike most heroes in other books is not a 'perfect lover' to start with. How the heroine deals with that is delicious!

I absolutely loved this story and could not put it down once I began reading. The author took us to a world of romance with enough dash of fantasy elements to provide an interesting angle. Romance readers will love this book even if they're not a fantasy/sci fi fan. I loved the main couple and their give and take relationship. Considering the circumstances of their joining together it probably wasn't easy on either end. I can't wait to read more from this author.

I normally like alien books. But the hero spends the first half of the book trying to finish sex as quickly as possible because that's his culture. And he keeps telling the heroine to lie still and not move. The heroine is never sexually satisfied. So she tells the chef to give the hero bland food so she can get his attention.

And I lost interest at that point. I don't want to read about a hero who can't make his woman happy for half the book.

Miki and Vaan book is good at plot building and letting the characters develop. I wasn’t sure about reading it initially because I read some of the reviews that talked about how Miki seemed ver weak in character but I think that is because the story is laid out from a perspective where two individuals don’t understand each other’s culture and lead to misunderstandings. Also miki is not from a warrior culture which is what the point of the book is about.

Wow! new author to me. I loved the idea behind the story. It draws you in from the very beginning and doesn't ever let you go. When it ended I just wanted to sit and pout! I felt like I could just keep reading forever. I loved the world and hope to see many more warlords fine their matches! I finished this in one sitting and honestly the time flew by.

Summary: Barbarian romance between two alien species - Mikayla seeks protection for her people while Vaan seeks vengeance against those who want him dead. In reality this book is an exercise in how long you can survive a plot with a misogynistic asshole hero who doesn't start to change his ways until about 65% through the book and never fully gets rid of his superiority complex and disdain for his mate's freewill. Some sex scenes (mostly "lie back and think of England" scenes where the female gets no pleasure) and somehow a romance despite a hero who is as unlikeable as possible. Science fiction but only because there are aliens: do not expect advanced tech or civilisations.

I am a bit obsessed with Michelle Howard. I have read almost every single book that she's ever written. This series is new to me and I have to say that book one started off a little bit suspect to me but then it grew on me. Then started off as an ass but he slowly began to see the error of his way. There was a part in the book where I wanted to wash my hands of Vaan and just say I will not entertain the shenanigans from you and you deserve to be alone and mean by yourself. I am glad that I continued the story because when Vaan and Mikayla actually got to bond, their love story was very well written. I I am glad that Michelle wrote the story like it is because if from the very beginning everything was fine it wouldn't have felt real to me.

Throughout this book there is that one character who is completely and utterly suspect. He knows he is suspect and so does Vann but Mikayla sees the good in everyone and that kind of annoyed me throughout the book. Everybody seen that the guy was not good but she wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt multiple times. In the end she could have died and I am glad that she finally got to see him for who he really is. I'm going to continue the series because I need to figure out what is going on and also I need to figure out what's going to happen with the other 15 Warlords.

Two starts because I read it to the end but I regretted finishing it.
First, the story was not too bad. It is a, you could say, inter-species love story of some sort. What I seriously disliked are the really bad spelling mistakes, grammar errors, half-finished sentences, missing verbs and all the other stuff that you could easily clean up with a simple editing program.
Then there is the grave nonsense in the content. For example, Miki, who is the female protagonist, is described in detail as poikilotherm and reptile-like. Then there is a scene where she sweats because it is hot. What is this nonsense???? In another scene she wears a full-coverage body armor that protects her from a sword strike. When she starts running in this armor she feels the cold win on her naked forearms. Mistakes like these were everywhere and mind-boggling. They constantly pulled me out of enjoying the story. Michelle Howard wrote a nice story but it really begs for an editor.

The premise sets this up to be a pretty good book with a decent concept, the biggest downfall however is the heroine.
The heroine Mikayla was annoying af and I almost DNF in like the second chapter just because of her.
Although both aliens and apparently common for different species to exist in the story’s settings, ‘Miki’ was rude and disrespectful of the warlords differing culture, then went onto want a wedding asap then complained she didn’t wear a nice sari because it was rushed.
Most annoying though, she snuck out knowing the protagonist was going to ?attack, her guard was almost killed, and from this she apparently was able to win all the Overlord’s men over and get their respect (the one who almost died was one of them btw). Make is make sense.
Even the bloody epilogue annoyed the hell out of me.
