Gwen Shafer lives alone with her daughter Carly and has been training her to be a hunter since she was a small child. They each have the same birthmark, which designates them as being very special indeed. Gwen tells Carly stories about the things she must be ready to fight. But the most important thing is what is called "Shai". She is a sin eater, she eats the souls of people and leaves them as "empties", zombie like creatures that in turn kill anything else it can find.
Gwene is relentless about Carly's training and her memorizing certain instructions which includes a phone number.... Carly does not believe in monsters or " The Order", but very soon she will be grateful for knowing all of it because life as she knows it is about to change forever when Shai takes over Gwen's soul and Carly is forced to kill her own mother.......The Hunt is on with a vengeance.
This is a fast paced and twisted race against a mythical Greek Goddess, the Shai, who will take any form, devour and over run even the Order itself to get to Carly, the one marked by prophecy to defeat Shai.....
This is not another zombie story. It is however, full of surprises right to the very end. I was totally taken in and captivated by all of the characters, who some held their own surprises, and not all good ones at that! I was knocked sideways by some that I never saw coming at all.
Trust me, this book is worth the read.
