A new quarantine erected in the middle of the night seals off his neighborhood from the rest of the city. But Nick isn’t sick and his family isn’t, either. In fact, no one seems to be sick. More disturbing still, rumors circulate that quarantines on distant Grounds are becoming permanent, the affected people never heard from again.
If he stays, he risks his family becoming sick or worse. The only way out is to break laws that carry a penalty of death. Fearing for his life and the safety of his family, Nick joins forces with a local group. But can he trust anyone with the lives of his family?
Seven hundred years ago, a city walled itself off from the rest of earth's population, becoming N. Aarde. Decades after first containment, N. Aarde expanded upward, becoming a world unto itself. The inhabitants of this city-world have boomed to over eighty million people, but the history of why the world was built and what lies outside has been lost. This world is Nick's world.

As an English major, I read a lot of books. The concept of Sky 1-Foundation really intrigued me because it told an apocalyptic story in a way that I have never seen approached before. The concept of why everyone is housed in levels and the hierarchy caste made me immediately want to read more. The story is set in a future where there is more population than space available. The story hearkens back to mysterious illnesses that could wipe out a whole section of people at a time. In order to contain this threat, whole levels are closed off. There is mostly vague rumors and lack of understanding why and what is happening in the levels below.
The main character, Nick, teams up with a group of ragtag like-minded people hoping to escape to the higher levels as well. He conspires with them in order to save his child and wife from the same fate as those in the lower levels. The only way for people to survive is to move upward. Most save everything they have to buy their way up more levels, knowing that the more space they put between themselves and the bottom levels, the better their life will be. Choosing to break their way into the upper levels is a serious crime.
The characters themselves are very real and compelling. It is rare that I read a book that really makes me as a reader become invested in their outcome. There is a sense of urgency to the actions of all the characters in the story. Hanging over their heads is the very real threat of quarantines. As a reader I identified with Nick’s struggles to save his child. Some of the characters are extremely frustrating, such as Nick’s manipulative wife, Jane. I find it very well-written when I feel emotions towards the words and actions of the characters. The characters are also real in the sense that many of them have flaws and questionable choices ahead.
Sky-1 Foundation is extremely action packed. I knew it was in the thriller genre, but I was surprised to find the characters in action so quickly. The first part of the book focuses on the group’s plot to break their way into higher levels to avoid future quarantines. There is a section of the novel with people filling gated sections to change levels that was really eye-opening as to the desperation of the citizens.
Throughout the novel, there are constant moral and ethical dilemas that really create a gray area for the reader. Nick faces many choices to save his child that he might not have been prepared to make. Also, his wife seems so irredeemable, that it made me question if his previous sacrifices for her were worth it. The love for a child and protecting the future can make one capable of moving mountains, in Nick’s case.
The way the book was presented left me with so many questions that I can not wait to see how the rest of the series progresses. I am really interested to learn more about the history of the world, what the diseases are, and what is really going on in the upper and lower levels.
Overall, Sky-1 Foundation is a great book if you enjoy fast-paced thrillers and don’t mind a little confusion at first trying to keep track of the characters. The storyline is perfect for those who love an apocalyptic thriller with a twist.
I received this novel free for the purpose of review.
Wow! Where do I even start with this book? The one thing I can say with absolute certainty is that this book will grip you in it's talons and won't let you go until you finish it. From the first page where we meet Nick Burke and learn of his situation to the last pages where...well you'll have to read and find out...the action keeps you immersed in Nick's story.
This is the synopsis provided for the book:
In a post-apocalyptic world, Nick Burke has been allotted 389 square feet of living space by the government. Disease spreads quickly when people are packed together so tightly. Quarantines have been imposed in an effort to contain the spread of infection.
When a quarantine is imposed on Nick's Ground, he and his family are trapped. The only way out is to break laws that carry a penalty of death.
Fearing for his life and the safety of his family, Nick joins forces with a local group to move to another Ground. But can he trust his new friends?
Right off the bat you can see that this is going to be a dystopian setting so if you enjoy reading dystopians, then I would definitely recommend this book for you. What I loved about it was the action sequences-you follow Nick and his family through their journey to get to higher ground and each scene is so meticulously described that you're on the edge of your seat. I also really enjoyed that this was a more gritty dystopian-many of the books I've read in that genre have been targeted to a teenage audience so you tend to miss out on the more gritty descriptions. This was perfect for an older audience (although I think it would be completely suitable for a teenage audience). I also really liked that this book was so believable. Many times when I read a book, I end up rolling my eyes every few pages because the scenes are just so over the top or absolutely unrealistic. That definitely wasn't the case here-I could very well see this happening in a post-apocalyptic world and that's what sets this book apart from many other dystopians.
But, the best part of the book is it's part of a series! Yes, that's right-more action, more conflict, more everything! What's also great is that the author managed to solve the basic conflicts in this book, but still sets up the overall themes for the next book so your not left with a frustrating cliffhanger. Instead, your left with a sense of completeness, with just a hint of anticipation for the next book and I know I'll be looking for the next book in the series to read soon.
Anyways, I would definitely give this book a try if your into Dystopians because it's definitely one of the better ones out there!
In a society that has been separated from the rest of the Earth, for 700 years, the only way for one man to save his family, is to break the law.
The Ground is the post-apocalyptic/dystopian world in which the government runs all. As the population expands, so does the city, only here, the city expands up; as more grounds are added, those that are on the bottom become disease filled and inescapable, while those near the top are filled with more space, and greater luxuries.
In this story, we meet Nick Burke and his family. He has just 389 square feet to live in, and small spaces breed disease, and as a mandatory quarantine comes over the ground, Nick only has one choice...he must escape to a higher ground, if he wants to save his family.
Escaping is not as easy as it might seem, because if the government doesn't want you going to a higher ground, you aren't going. However, Nick isn't going to let that happen, and he joins forces with a group of men, determined to do the same as Nick...get their families to higher ground. Even if that means breaking a law, that is punishable by death.
This book is a post-apocalyptic thriller, and it lives up to it. I don't want to ruin the story, but I will say, this story doesn't end how you might imagine. It does however, leave you ready to read the next book in the series.
William Amerman does an excellent job of bringing the post-apocalyptic world to life, and I found myself on the edge of my seat wondering what turn events was next for Nick. If you are interested in reading this book, you can fine it HERE. I highly recommend it!
The Sky Series is a wonderful mix of post-apocalyptic/dystopian and a spy thriller. I love both of these genres, and I must say that Foundation combines the best parts of both! There's even a mafia-style "family!" It is written in such an incredibly engaging manner... to the point where I've gotten lost in the plot and stayed up far too late, just to find out what happens next. It moves fast, with so many twists and turns, which are especially dizzying because the narrative is delivered by several points of view! Despite the wonderful craziness which might leave you reeling, no part of the plot is confusing and everything is amazing. The characters are amazing- mainly because they are so real and very little about their relationships could be termed "perfect" in any stretch of the imagination. That's what makes it my favorite dystopian novel. Yes, favorite- Foundation has surpassed The Hunger Games, Divergent, and the whole legion of other books in this category that I have read and loved. You know why? Because the main point of the story is not romance. It's action and thrills and edge-of-your-seat what's-going-to-happen-next. PLUS it ends with a huge cliffhanger and I NEED to read the next installment, Detritus Machine, pronto. Seriously, get yourself a copy of Foundation now- like, right now!
The reason I love this book because the author (William Amerman) keeps you wanting to know more about life after hundreds of years and guessing will it ever come to this. Has the worlds population expanded so much that we need to build up into the sky? We meet characters that are involved with Nick Burke, members of this group that he has trusted to help and ensure him and his family to get emigrated to another level. Quarantine takes over his level to control this 'Malady' (sickness) that has taken over and walls are being put up all over the ground barricading people in. Every moment throughout this book is so descriptive that you feel as if you are right there along side Nick, running, dodging and attempting to help each circumstance with valor and praying he doesn't get caught.
Follow the roller coaster of events that come about through out the book with flashbacks of how they all came about and got to this point. Meet Nick, Jane (his wife), Simon (his son) and many more. They are all intertwined with each other and you get to meet each one and understand their story. One goal in mind for everyone - to get to higher ground by any means possible.
I hope you the readers enjoy it as much as I did... Enjoy!!
I read this book in one sitting. It starts out interesting and keeps your attention. It isn't often that I sit and read a book straight thru. It is very well written & very descriptive. You can feel what they are going thru to go to the next Ground Level. The struggles and roadblocks that we encounter daily when we try for something we want so bad. I could feel & relate to the frustration, love & wanting more for your husband & family that Jane goes thru. Knowing that you love your husband but want so much more for him. This is the first book I have read by William Amerman but it won't be the last & I am ready for the next book in this series. Mr Amerman is very descriptive and knows how to make you feel like you are IN the book with the characters. If you haven't read this book or anything by this author I high recommend him and this book.
I received this book free from the author & Tomoson.com for my honest & truthful review of this book. I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using www.tomoson.com Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.
Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial. When I first seen this book I thought oh no not another hunger games or divergent book, but it surprised me following these characters that I just fell in love with. Going 700 years into the future I was on the edge of my seat unable to quit reading as I felt like I was there in the book and a part of the escape group with Nick! I was drawn in loving and hating the characters and rooting for survival not wanting it to end as I turned each page. Being with this group escaping from the sickness no matter how nasty or hard things got I sat cross-legged straight up knots in my stomach as the adventure continued. When the last page came to an end I was actually sad and can only hope that William Amerman comes out with a second and that when my boys get old enough to read I can use his books to draw them in to the world of imagination!

I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. At first I wasn't thrilled with the big leap backward toward the beginning of the book, as well as the way it jumped back and forth. Once everything started coming together, I kind of understood why he chose to start that way. I felt thoroughly sorry for Nick throughout much of the book. There are so many twist and turns, but it flows well. The supporting characters are fantastic and I quite enjoyed the personalities of the females, especially.
The ending took me by surprise. I don't want to divulge too much, but...it sure didn't end the way I "hoped" it would. It was good, because it was different. I know that the next two books in the series are going to take place prior to this point, but I hope there is something in the future that will touch upon what happens to the other characters. I'm not sure whether it even could progress from there, but I felt like their stories were a bit too open-ended for that to be finished.
I received a copy of this book for review purposes. Regardless, all opinions are my own.
First of all, I have to admit this book wasn't at all what I expected...At least the first 3/4 of it, anyways. I was expecting more of a "run for your life and get out alive" type of plot, which it is later on in the book. The first portion of the book is more like a heist story, though, which isn't my cup of tea. If it is yours, though, then you'll love it.
I also had a hard time following the story and some of the actions that were going on at times. But, it may just be me. Perhaps my imagination wasn't firing on all cylinders.
Overall, I did enjoy Sky1-Foundation and I have a feeling that the 2nd and 3rd books are even better! There are all kinds of different twists going on and I can't wait to see how they come together and find out more about how the place they live in came to be. Plus, I was majorly surprised by how the first book ended, so I'm eager to see how the second one starts.
I found the concept of this book really interesting. I tend to enjoy thrillers and post-apocalyptic stories, so I was really hoping I would love this book. While the book isn't terrible, it didn't live up to my hopes.
The first part of the book can be rather confusing as the story jumps around in time. I was about a third of the way through the book before I had a good handle on the characters and storyline. Once I wasn't as confused, I started to really enjoy the story.
However, I found that the female characters ruined the book for me. They do their best to live up to negative female stereotypes. The two major female characters are either weak and manipulative or a bit crazy and manipulative. A couple other female characters are mentioned repeatedly, but are never fully introduced during this book, so I don't know for sure what kind of personalities they have.
I want to know what happens next in the series, but I don't know if it's worth reading the next book.
I was provided with a free copy in exchange for my honest opinion.
Sky 1 Foundation is right down my alley for books to enjoy and be able to zip right through to read. I am currently reading Sky 2 Detrius Machine and look forward to the third book Sky 3 Emerald Mara. I was very happy that William Amerman let me review all three of this books and hope to see more from him in the future.
Sky 1 Foundation starts right from the get go with action already taking place which makes for a good start and a good catcher of readers who are looking for action right from the beginning. Sky 1 is based on a original thought of the future and how people might try to live out or govern people in a society that has lived through war.
When a virus breaks out people rush to try and get to another level before they quarantine the level they are already on. I really don't want to go into much more you can read the what the publisher has to say below but if you like post apocalyptic books then you will enjoy this one.I received this as part of a promotion in order to facilitate a unbiased and honest review.
Order the second book with this one...you're not going to want the story to stop. the complex and detailed world that the author makes is a great backdrop for an intense thriller. you're heart will break for Nick as he navigates through a world that has become dangerous and confusing. as a father i felt for his desire to do his job and to make a better life for his family. his memories of horrible past events haunts his days as he works to set his family free. the oppressive and callous government is doing everything to control the world around him and his plans to set his family free of oppression leads him down a dangerous world. this fast paced slice of a possible world is filed with possibility if only he can get through the night. William Amerman sets a blistering pace and as the reader the next page cannot come fast enough.
i received this book in return for a honest review: all opinions are my own.
I received this book as a review for my blog, even though I did receive it for a review all my opinions are my own.
First off, I just LOVE the apocalyptic type books so I was excited to be able to read this, the beginning of the book definitely caught my attention with how it started out. It does go back and forth with time, the characters from the beginning are Nick, his wife and their son. It is set in the future but it is quite possible that this could happen within our world right now.
You learn of new friends that Nick is trusting with the future of his family, to get out of the "Ground" {basically the level that his family is on, as you get further from the lower ground the better off you are} they will be breaking laws that are punishable by death.
It is an awesome book and I won't be ruining it by putting any spoilers, I can't wait to read the next one!
Science Fiction is my love of books. How I got sucked into the world of reading. This story is a great book. This is the story of Nick and Anna. This may be the 2nd book but since it starts 10 years before the 1st it was better for me that I read this one first. I am an avid reader and I love to read before I go to bed. Well I couldn’t stop reading it. Yes 3″10 am came around and I was almost done and thought well its already 3 anyways might as well finish it. I cannot wait to get to the next book. Which from what I gather would be book 3 in the series chronologically.
**Disclosure: I received this product for free, almost free or as a gift in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
This is only mine and my family’s opinions. I will only suggest products I personally would use.**
I received a copy of this book for an honest review.
I enjoyed this book and I recommend it to folks who enjoy a twist on a future with (but a future recognizable and easy to identify with) a dystopian setting. There were a couple points were I thought emigration would have been a better choice than immigration to describe the offices on certain levels, but it was one of those nit-picky things that didn't truly affect my enjoyment of the book (and I'm not perfect... so the fault could be mine).
This is a series, but I felt the novel gave a resolution to the plot presented- the way a series should.
Purchase this book, if you are like me, you won't be disappointed. I am eagerly awaiting the next in this series.
I received a copy of this book free for review purposes.
Nick Burke's story is a fascinating one that takes us on a gripping ride through a post-apocalyptic era where citizens are fighting to rise above the world they live in. Trapped during a quarantine, Nick and his family need to escape to higher ground. And Nick has a secret that the government wants.
If you like action and edge-of-your-seat reads, Sky1 - Foundation is for you. The author has an uncanny talent for making you feel every heart-beating moment and you just might feel as though you are part of Nick's escape group! With well written flash-back scenes that fill in the gaps, he comes out with developed characters and a story line that leaves you wanting more. I can't wait for the next book in the series!
Williams Amerman's novel Sky1 - Foundation is action packed and drama filled. The plot follows main character Nicke Burke through a series of trials, tribulations and just moments of survival tactics as he tries to move his way up levels for himself and his family. Disease and mandated quarantines place him, his family and his colleagues lives at risk. What would you do to save the one's you love? This book cuts no corners and at times gives the reader "the honest dirty truth." It is pretty fast paced and was an excellent read. Looking forward to more from thrilling stories by William Amerman.
I received this book to read and honestly review. My honest opinion is that this was a phenomenally written and incredibly engaging post-apocalyptic thriller. The characters were all believable and multi-faceted. The scenery was descriptive enough that you could easily picture the details in your mind, but not so bogged down that it slowed the action. I'll admit I quite often admonished myself for skipping ahead in the story paragraphs at a time to find what happened next. If I could have read the entire book in one sitting, I would have. This book provided the perfect escape from my reality.
Finally a dystopian for adults! Are you tired of searching for a dystopian geared toward someone other than pre-teens? Well Sky1 is for you. Immediately the reader is plunged into this new world. You instantly become attached to the characters and want to know where their story leads. This book takes place in a world where humans live on different grounds or levels. With each higher level comes more space and in the case of Nick and his family, a higher ground provides safety. I couldn’t put this book down and I bet you won’t be able to either!
My wife recommended this book & for once she was right. Once I started I could not put it down. I myself am a retired vet & can see our world getting crazy like this. Always trying to outdo/outclass someone else. Just because of what "level" we are on. If you haven't read this book I strongly urge you to get it and sit down for a while because you will not want to move until you are done.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review on impartialreport.com. And honestly? I loved it! The plot wasn’t your typical rehashed story, and it kept me interested for the entire story. Of course it left me wondering at the end (not uncommon for authors who plan to release sequels). If you’re into science fiction and dystopian tales, don’t pass this one up.
