Well, the blurb sounded quirky and the price was right, but I had a hard time finishing it.

I just felt disconnected from the story despite the fact that it seemed well written and had very few editing errors.

There was a lot going on for such a short read. I felt the focus should have been on the interaction between the H/h.

Amazing start but in the end a disappointing read.

I downloaded this back in September 2013 but just never got round to reading it, while searching for another book I noticed this and thought I'd check out the first couple of pages and that was it I was gone I couldn't believe I hadn't read this earlier.
Adam is the first alpha, he's three thousand years old, the things he's seen and done and he's spend three thousand years searching for his mate...I mean really could this book start any better?
I literally couldn't believe I'd had this book all this time and never read it.
Cassie is just 23 and her life is looking miserable she's being forced to take part in an arranged marriage to the cruel and vicious Lucius to save her pack.
I had such high hopes but this book didn't go in the direction I wanted and I was disappointed from the first moment we met Adam, I wanted a strong confident alpha, I mean come on he's three thousand years old he must be nearly invincible and fearless but no he's homeless and he seemed weak and well...disappointing.
When I'm reading a book like this I want a strong dominant lead and I actually cringed as Adam says "I smell him! I have to leave! Don't you understand, he'll kill me when he finds me!" So not the strong dominant type then, you have to wonder what he's been doing for three thousand years.
At that line I nearly stopped reading, I should have done but I figured he was injured when he's fit again he'll show them, or so I hoped.
Another thing I like about shifter books is the sense of pack and honour all looking after each other with the alpha as guide, yes you get 'baddies' obviously otherwise the stories would be pretty boring but in this book I didn't like how the wolves were and I don't just mean Lucius I mean the council as well.
So while this book started out incredibly well and showed such promise in the end all I felt was disappointed.

OK - the premise (of Adam being the FIRST first alpha werewolf) was good, as was the arranged marriage between Cassie and Lucius - but.....

There was no real character development: Cassie comes across as a down-trodden female reluctant to stand up for herself before her mother and the (obnoxious) Lucius - but she does redeem herself eventually :) Adam should be more than he appears (IMHO), and the fact that he allows himself to be caught in (ridiculous) circumstances does not support his (supposed) alpha-ness.

I'm happy with the "true mate" trope; I'm happy with Lucius' ending, but Evelyn (Cassie's mother) seems to get away unscathed (not good).

For a Free Read from Amazon, this was fair, but I hope (and wish) for better from the author. The only real quibble I have is the 'past' and 'present' scenes: they could have been presented slightly different (and better) - it was jarring (aka pulled me out of the story) - but I persevered :)

I'm not really sure how to start on this review. I'd say its a solid 3.5 star read. Not great, but pretty good and worth the time for sure. I got this as an amazon freebie, and as most of us know, those can really be a hit or miss. This was a book I'm glad I actually took the time to read. The only thing I love more than smut is paranormal smut, and this book did have its share for such a quick/fast read. I think that this series does have some potential. It was a different sort of paranormal romance, but I can't really complain there. I was pleased with how this ended, and the fact that it didn’t have a halfa**ed ending with a cliffhanger. For that reason alone, I think I'm going to give the next book in this series a shot. It has definite possibilities, and I look forward to seeing how it plays out.

How much did I pay: Freebie
Would I recommend: For free or low priced, sure
Will I read more in series: I'm going to give the next book a try

This was a great concept but poorly executed. It's improbable to have a society of beings who are centuries old acting like scared petulant children. The villain was true to form and on keeping with an alpha predator but no one else was. The eldest came across as inexperienced and young which is a real problem because he's supposed to be older than Christ. His alpha mojo should be rolling off him in waves, but no it doesn't. Furthermore, the women in this story are caricatures, there is no true depth to any of them. Again, good concept but poorly executed.

This story needs a themetune, so I pick The Phoenix by Fall Out Boy.
This was a pretty short read and I can't say that I expected any more. It was pretty good, lots of drama, I won't say it was exceptional but it was a very enjoyable read. The editing was good, the writing was pretty good and the overall plot was interesting. It blended 2 pretty overused plots together and created a story that was somewhat unique.

Free read but not one will be revisiting as all the characters felt like they were going through the motions and did not particularly care about any of them except Cassies' dad who should have gotten a better deal before his finally selfless act of love.

This book through me for a bit of a loop. It is using some of the patriarchs from the bible as main characters and to explain the existence of werewolves.

The first alpha is Adam (as in Adam and the Garden of Eden) and other werewolves in biblical history include Noah, Jacob, Benjamin and other long lived people talked about in the Old Testament. The author also references passages/verses from the Old Testament. Even though the other figures are mentioned there is very little done with them as characters in this short story.

The male lead (Adam) is a 3000 year old unmated lone werewolf and his female lead (Cassie) is a 23 year old modern girl who is slated to marry an abusive pack alpha.

Adam has roamed the world, never established a pack of his own and avoided other werewolves in general. It was a little disappointing that the lead female was a Cassie and not an Eve or an equivalent to Eve. If the author went through all of the trouble to make the biblical connection then why not weave the biblical characters closer together to make the story more believable.

Also, the is using the verses/scriptures to support her tale or at least the background of Adam is okay but authors must be sure to convey correct information when using other sources in supporting their tales. It is understandable that the author could not focus on the other children of Jacob or the children that Jacob and Rachel produced. It would have been worthwhile to note that Benjamin wasn’t the only child of the pairing and that the other son (Joseph) according to the author’s reasoning would have been werewolf as well. The author also mentions Noah is a werewolf because he is long lived, but Noah is a descendent of the Biblical Adam. I do understand the author’s attempt to break these connections to make Adam (biblical or not) a standalone character. The material base is too broad to be used in a short story format.

Unfortunately, I did not have any favorite characters in this tale. I did like that the female lead (Cassie) came into her own in the last sequence of the story but there wasn’t anything of either lead character to draw the reader in. My major issue was Adam an him being a virtual ‘weakling’ against other werewolves. The book is titled “The First Alpha” and Adam’s character did not deliver that. He was scared of the other Alpha and he wasn’t as strong as a 3000 year werewolf should or would be. If he was the oldest werewolf walking all other wolves should quake in their boots as soon as he approaches. Instead of an alpha his character displayed characteristics of a beta.

Like most novellas the story was rushed and so the ending was rushed.

For a short novel that had so much potential this was a disappointing read.

Description:

dam has waited an eternity for his mate. After three thousand years of searching he's almost lost hope that he'll ever find her... almost convinced himself that God has forsaken him.

Cassie is miserable. At just 23 the buxom, beautiful werewolf has found herself caught up in her mother's Machiavellian power struggles, forced into an arranged marriage with the cruel, violent alpha of the Ironclaws, Lucius. When the Long Night arrives Cassie will become his property, to do with as he will.

Imprisoned in Lucius' summer home with Megan, a gutter-minded 400 year old teenager, and Rutherford, a senile housekeeper who can't remember where he left his trousers, Cassie has resigned herself to her fate. She'd never dare go against her mother, and to reject Lucius would lead the weak Darkfangs into war against the mighty Ironclaws. Cassie knows she has no choice but to sacrifice her happiness for her tribe...

... And then she picks up a scent on the breeze.

The First Alpha is a tale of love against all odds; of betrayal, scheming and intrigue, and of two souls linked together across time.

My Thoughts:

Cons: Character development was poor so we didn't connect with the characters
No chemistry between the love interests
confusing back story on the mating of werewolves

Pros: Wonderful premise of where werewolves came from.
Loved the idea of Adam and would have loved to have him share some of it
Cassie.
For the mate of an alpha Cassie had no spine. Her decisions were stupid and
a great deal of the angst would have avoided if she thought about what she
was doing.

Overall: I was disappointed I thought by spending so much time on Adam's background and that the title was directly related to this we would have more use of it in the actual story line. It was a complete waste as all it did in the end was say why he was stronger than the bad wolf. Lucius the badguy created more emotion than the mcs...

I give this book a 2.5 star rating. Ican't give it a recommendation but can wish the writer would go back and rewrite the story in a novel format and I think she would have a winner on her hands.

The reading style was okay, and the synopsis was interesting but unfortunately the story didn't live up to my expectations. In this book, a werewolf becomes a mortal after they meet their soul mate and produce a child. In that sense, this is different from other werewolf books that I’ve read. Lycanthropy is considered a curse and finding their natural mate is the number one aspiration in every werewolf's life. Becoming mortal is considered to be their reward for reproducing.

Cassie is a 23 year old werewolf who has been raised by her power hungry single mother Evelyn. Evelyn's tribe is much weaker than their neighbouring tribe and in order to protect their tribe, she makes a deal with Lucius, the vicious Alpha of the strongest neighbouring tribe. The deal means that Cassie has been promised to Lucius and they will be married on the next Long Night (full moon).

Adam is a three thousand year old werewolf who has travelled everywhere in the world and throughout the centuries in search of his fated mate. Most werewolves find their true mate within a century and Adam believes that he has been condemned to forever walk the earth. Until the day he is injured by a hunter and is set upon by a group of feral dogs who chase him onto Lucius' land and into the path of Cassie. Cassie nurses Adam back to health against her better judgment and after an ‘accidental’ kiss, discovers that Adam is her soul mate.

Fast forward a little and Cassie and Adam go on the run from Lucius which doesn’t last long. They are captured and returned just in time for Cassie’s marriage to Lucius. There are a couple of twists before the end but the ending was rather mediocre best. It’s okay for a quick read, but it didn’t light my fire.

I gave this 3 stars but I feel more like 2.5 stars. I can't really decide where I should go with this. I liked the premise of the story and it did move along at a nice pace, but still it was lacking in some ways. I would have liked if the characters were fleshed out more, particularly the character of Lucius. We are told he is a cruel and sadistic guy but we don't really get to see enough of him to get to explore that. Then there is Megan who is there one minute and gone the next but seems to have an important role in what is going on, no development of who she is or why she did what she did.

The idea behind the story is good and I did enjoy it. Adam has wandered for 3000 years looking for his mate and has not found her in all those years. Cassie is 23 years old and has been given to the cruel 500 year old Alpha Lucius by her mother to cement a treaty which would save their tribe from disappearing. When Adam and Cassie meet they know they are fated for each other, but the question is can they get away from what has been planned for Cassie since she was a child?

Cassie seems like a weak, whiny wolf with no common sense but then morphs into this strong woman all of a sudden and there should have been more. Adam is way older than Lucius but does not really seem as dominant as you would expect from a wolf of his age, though he is said to feel like an Alpha. This has introduced them and I would like to see more to see if the characters can be brought more to the front and made more interesting.

A quick read with a nice story that may pique your interest.

Action adventure read featuring one of the first wolf shapeshifters ever in existance (Adam) who has yet to find his mate. Had moments of well written action adventure scenes but between my confusion with time periods and the premise that it's possible to claim any available female to mate with or waiting for one's "true" mate to come into your life (even if it takes centuries) things didn't work for me. Also, I had issues with the heroine.

I feel it takes a certain quality to be the mate of an alpha. A strong or domineering alpha, heck even a psychopathic abusive one, should have an strong mate (whether it be physical or mental) so the bloodline remains strong. Even if the female is forced to mate the alpha I feel a backbone is necessary. Cassie didn't work for me in that regard. She was way too sweet, loving, and submissive.

As to the actual romance between Adam and Cassie. The one YA quality scene between the two was enjoyable but failed to portray that Adam had waited for as long as he did for Cassie who was a virgin. It might have seemed magical but for me the chemistry between the two was off.

So while I think the overall story line was interesting it was the character development and life mate premise that were problematic.

I was apprehensive to read The First Alpha, because I seldom read paranormal novels, but when I saw the super $0.99 deal, I couldn't resist. Plus, with a cover like that, how bad could it be?

Cassie is miserable as Lucius' future bride. She has only her Lucius-approved friend, Megan, and Rutherford, a housekeeper who is somewhat comically losing his mind, for company. But things change when she meets lone wolf Adam. I felt for Adam, he has been looking for his true mate for thousands of year. He watched his friends find their other halves and live the rest of their lives in happiness. As the reader, you want Adam to find his HEA.

I feel like lovers of the paranormal genre, or someone looking for a quick, easy read would like this a lot better than I did. The premise for the plot line was good, but I think something was lost in translation. I would have liked it better if there was more of a chance to develop the characters. The only other issue I had was that the story would switch between past and present so quickly, without any warning, that it took away from the story. Other than that, the plot was quick moving and the ending was somewhat fulfilling, with a possibility for the story to continue in another novel.
Overall, 3 Stars for The First Alpha.

The premise sounded interesting and the first few pages were very well written and drew me in. The rest was predictable and felt rushed. The story was incredibly short and I lost my enthusiasm about halfway through it, although I did finish it.

I thought the heroin was weak, gullible, indecisive, uninteresting and I could not believe that 1) she could not scent her own father (she's a wolf...hello! and that was never explained) and 2) she did not even consider the possibility that the girl who followed her everywhere wasn't a plant by someone to keep tabs on her.

Furthermore, I guess I expected the alpha's history and age to come into play. It was only discussed as an afterthought. He was thousands of years old! That is what made him so interesting, but like I said, this was treated as an afterthought and he ended up chained to a concrete barrier and having to be rescued by his lover. Such a frustrating situation for such an interesting...and old...wolf!

The story had amazing potential and I was just so disappointed when it fizzled out. I truly hate leaving bad reviews, but there really isn't anything I can say to recommend this series. I will say that the best parts of the story were when Adam reminisced about his past and when the author talked about his loneliness.

This was OK. I probably would have bumped it up a star if it were a free book. But, it was just OK. I didn't really feel the connection between the two characters at all. *shrugs* I usually like stories about mates, but for some reason this one was lacking something, for me.

My favorite character though was definitely Rutherford.

An elderly man stood in the doorway, supporting himself on a steel framed walker, his shoulders hunched over with age. He wore a jaunty knitted sweater covered with pictures of snowmen, despite the fact that it was midsummer, and a pair of baggy white boxer shorts. He'd clearly forgotten his trousers again.

"Cassie was up all night pouring raw eggs in your mouth, in any case. Never seen such a display. She went off for a nap a while ago, so I thought I'd sit in and wait in case you crapped out a cake."

The story was great. Felt like a great start to a series. However, it was rushed and just as the drama was heated it was over and so was the story. Perhaps there is a series that will continue to build upon the details we were introduced to in this book.

As in:
Adam and his new found mate
The other tribes and how Adam's take over effects the pack and surrounding tribes
Why her and how does her story line build
Adam takes her without a typical customary ceremony or as a gentlemen. He just simply takes what he deems as his. Just seems odd for an old fashioned guy and supposed good guy.

Lots of questions and that's just a few of mine.

Adams story is rich with history being 3000 years old but gets cut off in this book. Seems odd he is without a pack and so vulnerable vs strong as his age would suggest!

3 1/2 stars. This was a very quick, fast paced story. The storyline was very entertaining, had some twists I wasn't expecting, and lots of action. I'm not giving it more stars simply for the reason I wish the story was longer to develop. Because of its length, things happened fast. I did think the writing style was decent--it had good flowing dialogue. There was also a lot of jumping back and forth with the timeline for explanations--this I found a little confusing. I also enjoyed the characters--although I liked the heroine a bit more than the hero. She seemed to be emotionally stronger of the two--she actually had to help the hero a couple of times. I guess I was expecting some sort of "super alpha" given his advanced age. I think I really would have loved it if it was longer, and laid out a little more simpler.

Urgh I kept at it but at 60% I pulled the plug when I came across this horror:

I was sitting on a commuter train when I read that - the shame!

Adam changes his name to Robert at one point.

The book has spelling mistakes and bad grammar. It's a pity because I kind of liked the story with Adam being THE Adam and her mother's scheming but it was badly written. Who in their right minds refers to a man's phallus and/or member? I mean really?

I enjoyed Thw First Alpha, but it took me a little while to get really absorbed into it.
I enjoyed the back story of Cassie's mother offering her as a virgin bride to the alpha to keep peace. And there was some unexpected twists in regards to Megan and how she ended up involved in the debacle. Also her real father being revealed was a nice one.

I can't say that I didn't enjoy the story, because I did. I felt it was cliche in places, for example - love after sleeping together one time. I get they're bonded mates, but I thought there should have been some more hesitation and apprehension towards leaving with Adam, whether she could trust him, whether he would really protect her etc.

I think if there were more to carry on with, I would read them, at least to give the series a try.

This is a very interesting book I found it to be a fast pace read. The story line is great easy to follow and quite enjoyable the different pov what made this book even better for me.
Evelyn is a college student that is promise to an evil alpha by her mother. Her friend Megan is always around to make sure she is safe from danger. She follows her to college and also to Lucius house to keep her company so she would know a least one person in the Ironclaw pack. There's so much she does not know about her life that so comes to light when she meetss the mysterious Adam when he's being chased by wild dogs. Evelyn is captivated by his presents when she first sees the grey wolf and the strength he brings with him.

This story revolves around Cassie who is pledged to marry an Alpha of one of the Five Tribes. She dreads this mating and longs for her true mate. Adam is the First Alpha. He has waited thousands of years to find his mate. Suddenly, he comes upon Cassie and finds her. What follows is their journey to become mates.

It's a fair read and at only 140 pages, it can be read in an hour or two. I liked the story, but felt it was rushed and there was more that could have been told. The ending was also abrupt. While it was a pleasant way to enjoy a couple of hours, I really feel with some expansion, this story could be great.

I bought this because of the rave reviews on Kindle. I had to force myself to finish it. Large parts of the story was told to us. The hopping around of time lines did this book no favors. Every time some suspense built up it was explained immediately by a flashback - only they weren't true flashbacks being from a different POV sometimes. Adam needed to be more alpha, Cassie needed to be less slow in picking up what was going on and Evelyn and Megan needed to have the reasons for their actions explained.
Skimmed again: if anything I'd revise the review downward ( that's what I get for playing Russian roulette with kindle books to reread)

First one for me by K.A. Taylor. Love the scripts but missed feeling in the characters and the tension, feeling between the main characters. Also the end battle was more a script for a movie action scene than a book. To much detail and hard to imagine while reading. It is hard to enjoy a book if you have to picture the scene before you. I would have cancelled the iron spike part and battle who should rule the pack. Can't they not just end happy or with a hind to a second book (if there is going to be one)

This shows promise for a new series.

I enjoy shifter books so gave this one a try.

There were several plot holes that just didn't add up for me. BUT, it was still an interesting premise. I'd certainly read another one in the series.

I'll be keeping an eye out for more from her.

This was a okay read, I mean I really liked it, but Adam was kind of lame. I understood, he is one of the first alpha and is over three thousand years old. Shouldn't he be more powerful. He was a wimp and not a bad ass. I imagined him to be more powerful, for God's sake, he knew Jacob, Rachel and Benjamin(from the Bibel).
The rest of the story was fantastic and I enjoyed the main character Cassie.
I would recommend this book on a rainy day, enjoy.
