I will admit it: I had never read Anne of Green Gables before. I have seen the different television series. I have read about the author in a Smithsonian Magazine article. I am creating a quilt of classic children’s writers and L. M. Montgomery is on it. It was about time I rectified my omission!
Anne of Green Gables is about an orphan girl taken in by an older brother and sister living on Prince Edward Island in Canada, changing their lives for the better.
I was delighted to discover the book is hilarious, heart warming, and quite forward thinking. Yes, it promotes 19th c Christian values. Anne’s antics and michiefs result in lessons learned.
I’ve learned a new and valuable lesson today. Ever since I came to Green Gables I’ve been making mistakes and each mistake has helped cure me of some shortcoming. Anne in Anne of Green Gables
This quote makes me think of advice told to my son: Make all the mistakes you can; you learn from mistakes. Perhaps Anne’s mistakes warned readers, but the novel also offers understanding that our mistakes don’t define us.
Marilla, unmarried, uptight, and strict, mellows as she see that Anne means well and has a good heart. She just needs time to grow up. Her vivid imagination distracts her from her duties. She even indulges in novel reading! Marilla was raised in a time when women’s reading novels was frowned upon.
Anne makes a bosom buddy and reading about their make believe play acting brought back warm memories of my own best friend and our own play. (We were orphans living in Scotland, riding horses and solving mysteries!)
Marilla supports Anne’s educational aspirations. “I believe in a girl being fitted to earn her own living whether she ever had to or not,” Marilla explains. Anne later states that women would make good ministers. Such radical notions!
Montgomery’s writing about the land and seasons is beautiful.
The novel’s bulk is about Anne’s childhood, but we see her mature in the end. She loses her champion, Marilla’s brother. She forgives a boy who once teased her. She gives up a dream, taking on responsibility to care for Marilla as she was cared for. She is a young adult.
This edition of the novel includes inserts, ephemera representing items from the novel that help bring Anne’s world alive. A map, period reproductions of print items, recipes, notes and letters, a greeting card, programs, and the ‘pass list’ for the Normal school. These were not included in the egalley I read, only the descriptions. I am sure that they would make this edition special.
Thanks to the publisher for a free book through NetGalley.
As a die hard Anne Shirley fan, I have always wanted a special edition version of Anne of Green Gables. I was waiting to find one that would do justice to the very first book I fell in love with, the book that made me fall in love with literature and made me such an avid reader. This is that book. It’s beautiful. I didn’t remember the story in detail anymore and as I reread this version, picking out the letters and mementos as I reached them, I remembered why I loved it so much. I cried bitter tears when Anne told Marilla how much she loved her, Matthew and her dear Green Gables, knowing what was to come not long after. Matthew was the first character I ever felt true sorrow over, and it didn’t get any easier reading it again. What a wonderful, sweet man. Oh to be Anne Shirley and be so grateful and joyful about the world. I aspire to be more like her…what a wonderfully magical book ❤️❤️❤️❤️
best regalo ever, cualquier otra edición queda en vergüenza como fan de la serie y la película me gustó poder leer la historia original, me trajo recuerdos lindos!! y me hace acordar a gente que quiero mucho 🙂↕️❤️
I imagine the hard copy version of this special edition is truly lovely, with the original story plus pockets that include recreated memorabilia of the characters, such as notes Anne and her best friend passed at school, recipes for currant wine and raspberry cordial, the debate club's program. What a creative way to make this beloved story come alive!
As someone who grew up with Anne, I didn't think I could love anything more than the classic paperbacks. This edition is a MUST for any Anne of Green Gables fans. The handwritten letters/notes included throughout the book help immerse the reader into the story. I've never added something to my A wish list so fast in my life!
If my mind permits me to make no mistake right now, I believe it was a year or more ago when I answered one of the encountered questions that if I have to choose a certain character in the book to live with instead of this reality, what would I be and it was to live the life and persona of Anne of L.M. Montgomery's “Anne of Green Gables” that I chose. And so an encounter with this classic novel’s deluxe edition is as close as living in the world of Anne.
To read a book and be indulgingly engrossed with the dreams, aspirations, and literary as well as artistic activities of the characters in the novel makes it more special. But to feed those imaginations of ours from a certain book we read with replicas of the physical copies the characters are graciously wanting us to connect with too, has a deeper and another level of joyfulness being brought about in our reading experience and this is what this genius deluxe edition of L.M. Montgomery’s novel curated by Barbara Heller entitled, “Anne of Green Gables: The Complete Novel, Featuring the Characters’ Letters and Mementos, Written and Folded by Hand” has magically created to make our journey with Anne more vivid and timeless as it is. It is perfect for an October read for it is that autumn time of the year again for a cozy coffee and a wholesome adventure with Anne, especially for those dreamers and free spirits like her.
This book comprises pockets throughout, containing replicas of 13 items from the story recreated with writings and other historical details from various talented artists. These are the notes passed between Anne and her bosom friend Diana, Map of Avonlea, Marilla’s recipes, school and town-related pamphlets, etc.
Attention to details from the pieces in the pockets are what amazes me for the handwritings were evolved as the stories go on and the pockets continue to surprise the reader with every chapter or two like it is a teleportation to the world of Anne. For the lovers of this classic book or even a beginner to this novel, I just want to say that I am glad to live where this kind of special book exists.
I got the most BEAUTIFUL edition of Anne of Green Gables from Chronicle Books in the mail last week!!!!! And I LOVE IT!!!!!!! The text is SO easy-to-read. My sister’s copy of this book had tiny, thick font, which made it incredibly hard to read. This version has smaller font, but it is easy to read!!!!!! I’ll FINALLY be able to read this book again!!!!!! There are GORGEOUS mementos inside the book!!!! I showed my favorites, but there are EVEN MORE that I didn’t show you included in the book!!!!!!!! The little mementos make it a bit hard to flip through the book and keep your place, but you can take them out and easily find where they go with the handy little index in the back that also provides a bit of context about each of the goodies!!!!! I balked a bit when I saw the price listed for this book was $40 (part of the reason I was INCREDIBLY GRATEFUL to be gifted a review copy), but after seeing how amazing this edition is… yeah, it’s worth the price. If you’re looking for a gift for someone who LOVES Anne of Green Gables, this would be PERFECT!!!!! Even if that person in need of the gift is yourself!!!!!! Now, I just need them to make the rest of the series like this!!!!!!!
I received a review copy from the publisher. My opinions are my own. A positive review was not required.
This review is solely about this particular edition of Anne of Green Gables, not the classic itself. Also, Goodreads only lists the hardcover version of this book, but I am reviewing the e-ARC.
When I first requested this e-ARC, I was excited to see Barbara Heller’s rendition of the character letters and mementos alongside the original story. However, upon receiving the e-ARC, I was disappointed to find that none of those aforementioned special features are included; instead, there are just blank spaces for where the mementos would be upon publication. I even flipped through every single page of the book to double check. Therefore this is a DNF for now since I can’t provide as accurate of a review as I would’ve liked.
With that being said, the reason why this isn’t a 1 star (like my typical DNFs) is because I have confidence that the hard copy publication is as stunning as I imagine it would be. (And you can’t go wrong with a story as beloved as Anne of Green Gables.) So I would go out and peruse a hard copy of this book to see for yourself.
Special thanks to NetGalley and Chronicle Books for providing this e-ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Anne of Green Gables: The Complete Novel, Featuring the Characters' Letters and Mementos, Written and Folded by Hand by Barbara Heller; L. M. Montgomery is available now.
I received an early ARC ecopy of this book in exchange for my honest review. This edition is a beautifully formatted and sure to be an inspiring treasure for Anne fans. The introduction by Barbara Heller, explaining not only her own love for orphan literature (especially Anne of Green Gables) but also the life of the author, Lucy Maud Montgomery. I could easily see how her difficult childhood inspired the book and I had no idea she struggled with mental health and died by suicide. Also surprising, but in a much better way, was how prolific her writing was. Montgomery not only wrote the Anne of Green Gables series but hundreds of short stories and thirteen other novels! I wish the ARC I received showed the inserts that make this book a unique and interesting edition. I would have loved to see the map of Avonlea, the Exhibition Program, and letters. Thankfully, there is a notes section in the back where Heller shares about how she did her research on the additions like her historical recipes that she gleaned the cordial recipe insert from. In all, I think any Anne fan would enjoy having this on their shelf alongside their likely already well read copy.
I am a huge fan and lover of anything and everything Anne of Green Gables. When NetGalley offered up a review copy of the special edition version with mementos I leapt at the chance to grab an early copy. The forward was a sweet acknowledgement of so many children's love for the Annie of Green Gables tales but also includes a grown-up adult perspective.
There are additional documents listed at the end of the digital book. The documents include newspaper articles and an appendices. The appendices provides information on the letters and mementos scattered throughout the the hardcover version of the book. That's the only problem with reading the electronic version of the book. The replicas from the story are not included in digital format. I would have liked to see everything included. I'm sure they are splendid, however, and purchasers of the hardcopy will be in for a treat.
Barbara Heller's addition of Anne of Green Gables into the Handwritten Classics series will delight fans of Heller and Anne, alike.
This review isn't going to be so much on Anne of Green Gables--which is one of my favorite books in the world--because I don't think I could say enough positive things on this book. But, THIS edition, while I wasn't actually able to read any of the extras--was able to see what the extras will be.
So to avoid spoilers, I'll just name a couple. The first one will be a map of Avonlea. I cannot WAIT to see what this looks like!
Another insert is a recipe card for raspberry cordial. Now I've made this before due to the Anne of Green Gables Cookbook. But I'm so excited to see if this is the same recipe and to give it a try!
The other things I want to read are the letters between Anne and Diana.
The cover is beautiful and if this is like any of the other books done by Heller, I'll be pre-ordering this one for its October release.
Anne of Green Gables is one of my favorite novels of all time. I truly appreciate the care that Barbara Heller put into this beautiful edition. I am reviewing an advance copy, so I did not have access to all of the replicas that will be added in the final print version, BUT Barbara took the time to explain her research and what each item will look like. The research and historical context for each item is exciting, and I can't wait to see what the finished copy will look like.
This collector's edition would be great for new and old Anne fans, and I will definitely be keeping an eye out for it when it is published. Thanks to Barbara Heller, Chronicle Books, and NetGalley for the chance to read and review this e-copy. My thoughts and opinions are my own.
I grew up reading and watching Anne of Green Gables so this was a pleasure to read! Barbara Heller’s inclusion of handwritten letters and mementos from the characters adds a personal touch to the story of Anne Shirley, making the reading experience more immersive than ever. Each letter feels as though it’s been plucked right from the pages of Avonlea, adding richness to Anne’s whimsical world and her relationships with those around her. The attention to detail in this edition honors the charm and spirit of the original while offering a fresh, interactive experience for both longtime fans and new readers. Thank you Barbara Heller, L. M. Montgomery, NetGalley, and Chronicle Books for this ARC!
The original novel, with no edits. I pulled out a copy of the original novel to compare and it's exactly the same, with exceptions for chapter formatting. The ARC I received did not include any of the additional letters or features which this edition advertises. The biblography looks extensive and it seems like a well researched project. I cannot tell if the letters and mementos will be included in a pocket or tucked into the book but it definitely seems interesting and I wish I had the opportunity to see them.
* Thanks to the publisher Chronicle Books via Netgalley for the ebook.
ARC review; thanks to NetGalley and Chronicle Books for the access to this ebook!
I loved Anne of Green Gables when I read it last year, so I was curious about this edition. Though it's a digital copy, I think it's beautiful. The physical hardback must be even more beautiful. I think this will be worthwhile for collectors, it's a lovely edition.
I felt hope and wonder alongside the passionate and whimsical character, Anne. This heart-warming tale was a pleasure to read. The hand-written and folded notes and momentos were beautiful inclusions that had me excited each time I came across one. Would definitely recommend to anyone who needs the comfort of a feel-good book.
Another splendid work of Barbara Heller indeed! BEG for more of this series PLZ🙏 It’s my first time reading the original novel of Anne and the reading journey was so pleasant and unforgettable. What a treasure! Thank u Barbara, for introducing wonderful works to readers. Can I wish or for the next of the series?🥺
Anne of Green Gables is still one of my favorite books of all time, but this special gorgeous edition with letters and newspapers and keepsakes has now become one of my favorite editions that I’ll go to over and over again. It’s truly a treasure!
5 stars when I was Anne’s age, all the numerous rereads and now. Barbara Heller’s edition is a gorgeous, heart warming version to transport you to Prince Edward Island for anyone who loves this story.
Me ha encantado, muy divertido. Me he reído muchísimo con este libro y en los últimos 2 capítulos he llorado mucho. Sabía que iba a seguir siendo muchísimo libro favorito y estoy muy feliz. Además es una edición preciosa con las cartas.
My ultimate comfort read and one of my all-time favourite novels. This is the ultimate ode to girls with adhd — through Anne, you can see the delight that they bring into our world. Really grateful for this special edition, which offers up letters and mementos to pour over as the story unfolds. I savoured it by limiting myself to just one chapter a day, while sitting in the morning sun sipping a cup of tea.
