The Nurses of Eastby End

Rate this book
Rachel Norris wants to forge a new life and career. And she wants to forget her past.

When Rachel qualifies as nurse, she does so because she wants to help others and make a difference. But she is also running from a past life that must stay hidden forever.

Completing her training, Rachel moves to London but misses home desperately, so when she hears about an opportunity to train as a district nurse in a village near Rochdale, she seizes the opportunity, even though it will take her closer to the trouble she left behind. She knows nothing about Eastby End and she is shocked to find it a little more than a slum. It's clear she will need to work hard and keep her wits about her to win the trust of the villagers.

Joss Townley has been reluctantly working in his father's factory but is dismayed at the conditions the workers endure. When his father dies, he sells up immediately to begin travelling but is called home by his mother in an emergency - in order to save the family's fortune he must take on a house in a place called Eastby End. He has no idea what he has bought, and is appalled to see his new neighbours' misery and anger. A meeting with the mayor, Walter Crossley, gives him direction and focus for the first time in his life, and brings him into contact with Rachel.

Can they both survive life in Eastby End? Or will it be the making of them?

My comments:

I was planning to start the music hall series, however as I started reading that book due to how much I enjoyed Dubaly lake eastby end kept calling to me and I found I could not concentrate on the other book even though I was enjoying the story. Therefor I decided to come back and read eastby end straight away and am I glad I did.

This book was amazing, I loved Rachel's character from the start and my heart went out to her for what she'd been through. I loved Joss as a character as well, again he was caring from the start and both wanted to help others. It was lovely to meet new characters such as Hanny, Theo and lally plus reconnect with Walter and Flaura. I'm already a few chapters into the second book already so that review will hopefully come tomorrow or Thursday depending on when i finish. A 5 star read for me and highly recommend. I would advise reading Dubely lake first before this series as characters from that series are mentioned.

How does Anna do it? I read lots of genres and authors and without fail, they do go through a slump and some of their books aren't good. Not Anna though. I've read all her books and every single one is brilliant.

The Nurses of Eastby End is the first in a new series and I devoured it in a day.

It features the wonderful Walter Crossley and a few other characters from her Silver Wishes series but introduces new characters Rachel, Joss and Adam who arrive to live in Eastby End - the rougher part of Olindale. Together they are horrified at the conditions and vow to turn the area around.

It's the first book of an exciting new series and sets out the story so well. I can't wait to find out how it progresses.

Another winner from the very talented Anna.

This book from Anna Jacob’s was a page turner for me. I don’t enjoy the last book from Anna as much but this one was lovely. Based around 1886, a young girl gets pregnant . Someone takes her in and helps her find her feet and a career she loves in Nursing.

Some of the things that happen in the village and decisions made by normal householders in setting up funds to benefit the village surprised me and it felt very unreal to me, would this have really happened. ?
But there were some interesting story lines in the book which kept me interested and want to keep turning the pages I need to find book 2 in the series now

This book follows the same Anna Jacobs formula as most of her others. Poor, good-hearted people receive surprise inheritances and try to help the local poor. Young people meet and fall in love. Bad guys with evil intentions are thwarted. Crazy people die accidentally.

The language is simple and old-fashioned, but a pleasant interlude and a quick read, in between other more challenging literature.

the one about the nurses in eastby end except there was only one nurse. but she got her happy ending. it seems all the men in this book are very very rich with several houses that are run down and belong to poor people, and one very big house that they choose to live in after getting their inheritance after all their dads died… there is also a murder. everything happens and is resolved in the last 60 pages.. good book but i probably wouldn’t rush to read another

I don't normally read romance stories but I enjoyed this one - I might look for others in the series to see how life is made better for the poorest in their community
