CAN YOU CATCH THE KILLER AND SURVIVE ENGLAND'S DEADLIEST COUNTY?
The follow-up to the hugely popular Could You Survive Midsomer?, with a winter twist.
Halloween in the beautiful county of Midsomer finds itself overshadowed by a trick or treat that takes a nasty turn. Sara McLower answers the door, and finds her life ended by a pumpkin. When villagers gather a few weeks later for her funeral, there's an understandable sense of unease.
Still, there's the festive lights switch-on to look forward to at The Windy Dog pub, overseen as always by longstanding landlady Betty Grainger. But when she flicks the light switch, it'd be fair to say that things go with a bit of a bang. It leaves not one but two serious crimes to investigate.
Which is where you come in. Step into the shoes of a detective in Midsomer, and choose your own path through the investigation. Can you get to the bottom of just what's happened, or will you end up putting your own life in jeopardy?
Your task, in this follow-up to the bestselling Could You Survive Midsomer? To solve what's gone on, arrest who needs arresting - and try to avoid coming a cropper yourself. Good luck, detective...
“Detective: you failed to survive Midsomer. But at least you went out in style…”
I'm glad someone will remember me. Even if I am just a cautionary tale.
This is a choose-your-own-adventure book, except instead of choosing between “left or right,” you’re choosing between things like “trust the suspiciously cheerful villager” or “poke around the creepy house because you have zero self preservation.” I made all the wrong choices first. Repeatedly. I’m a terrible detective. I’m pretty sure I’m the cause of most of the deaths in this book. Sorry everyone! At one point I reached an ending so quickly I just sat there thinking, “Well, shit.”
And then there are the deaths. At one point I was hit with: “As you’re eventually whisked to hospital, where the doctors valiantly attempt to save you from the squirrel rigor mortis attack...” Well, that escalated quickly.
I was also killed by a windmill ornament. I fell on it. And a yucca plant. It fell on me. At this point I’m less a detective and more a public safety warning.
The vibe nails that classic Midsomer Murders energy. Picturesque countryside, odd locals, weird village traditions, and murders that are both elaborate and weirdly personal. It’s all very charming until you realise you’ve once again failed to solve anything and are being gently told you’d make a terrible detective (which tbh feels accurate).
What I loved most is the replayability. You will go back. Not necessarily because you want to, but because your pride demands it. The book knows this and encourages this. It thrives on your stubbornness.
Tthe structure can be a bit all over the place in a slughtly less fun way. Some paths feel fleshed out, while others just end abruptly. So if you’re hoping for a perfectly crafted mystery, this might frustrate you. But if you’re here for the experience of spiralling through increasingly questionable decisions, you’re in the right place.
This was a fun book to read. You become the detective and you choose different paths to go. The performance review is nice to tell you how you did and if you get to move to one of three epilogues, my story ended at epilogue one.
So much fun! If you're a fan of the show, this is a must. At each question, I asked myself, "What would Barnaby do?" Didn't always work, but it added to the fun. Been through it thrice, and have yet to solve the murder, so maybe asking what Barnaby would do isn't working. At least I haven't been killed yet.
Det är roligt med dessa interaktiva böcker, men just den här berättelsen greppade inte riktigt tag i mig som jag hade önskat. Hade gärna ställts inför lite svårare val, men boken är definitivt väl värd en läsning.
A fun 'Choose Your Own Adventure' style book. This entry features a more festive flavour. The threads go on for longer in this book than the last one which I found better.
I wanted to like this book as I love the Midsomer Murders programme and thought it was a great idea to choose the route through the book to find out who the killer is. However if you choose the wrong route you end up at the end with no clue how you got there or the answers! I could not be bothered to go back and try again in case I ended up in the wrong place again! It was a DNF!!!!!
