Absolutely gorgeous and informative coffee table style book about curating vintage items that tell black stories and black history. Highly recommend for anyone who has an interest in anything vintage, antiques, black history and culture.
"... remembering the past as we create new ways to imagine and make the future."
I got so much more than I bargained for from this beautifully curated, coffee table style book of Black vintage items and cultural ephemera. Jannah Handy and Kiyanna Stewart are the entrepreneurs behind the Brooklyn based vintage shop BLK MKT Vintage. This book expands on their mission to curate vintage objects that tell Black stories and honor those who have come before us. “Doing this work saves pieces from ending up in the metaphorical wastebasket of history.”
With over 300 photos of vintage pieces, the book also features interviews with Black archivists, artists, memory workers and collectors - including a dope foreword from Spike Lee. The writing is informative, warm, and inviting. The photographs tell a story all their own. I enjoyed this glimpse into their private collection and appreciate the tips and tricks on how to begin my own collection. I wish I understood the importance of preserving family items and other important cultural items from a young age because my family had some gems. This has made me think more intentionally about what’s been passed down, what continues to pass down, and what I’ll eventually be passing down to my family. Highly recommend!
