Dominic Skinner, director of makeup artistry at MAC cosmetics and judge on Britain’s tv show Glow Up, has created a holy grail for cosmetic creativity. You will not find “what everyone on tik tok is doing” here, instead you’ll be able to unlock creative and authentic looks on your own. It’s about enabling self learning and development.

This book is broken down into three sections:

Experiment - where Dominic explains different, repeatable exercises for people to unlock their creativity and find inspiration for the basis of a creative makeup look

Create the Look - where Dominic shows how he himself took inspiration from each experiment and refined it into a more wearable, defined look

Sharpen your skills - where Dominic shows different makeup application techniques to help achieve a desired look, similarly to the explanations they give for how to “beat the seat” on Glow Up.

In a world of copy and paste, I found this book so refreshing. Unlike any other time We are living in an era where we are able to experiment with self expression. This is a book I can go back to time and time again to always come up with new, inspired, unique looks. Dominic’s simple explanations are easy to follow and beneficial to all who love makeup, whatever their skill level may be. He used a wide, inclusive range of beautiful models, so no matter who you are you will see someone with similar features in the beautiful, bold photography by Linda Shakesby.

I really like Dominic Skinner, ever since I started watching the first episode of 'Glow Up' - I love his wit and his extravagance so was excited to get reading this book.
However, I was left a little overwhelmed by the make up in the photographs. They were of course very lavish and daring, but I was expecting something I could do myself for a night out and not something as garish as this style. The photos are absolutely stunning thought!

I enjoyed looking at the images, but it's not something I would be trying myself.

Approachable for the non-professional, with instruction and photos that inspire. Beautiful colors, it was pure enjoyment to read and learn from this book!
