At a remote farm in Denmark, two visions of the future clash: one of a world without violence, the other of a path to paradise soaked in blood. Will Canute seize Ketil's land by force, and can Thorfinn stay true to his oath?

King Canute's quest to build a heaven on Earth will not be bloodless. His schemes have made Ketil and his sons into fugitives, barely escaping the king's clutches aboard Leif Ericson's ship. Chaos welcomes Ketil home, where an escaped slave has butchered his hired muscle. Beset by betrayal on all sides, there may be no way out for Ketil, yet Thorfinn finally has his freedom. He and Einar could leave the slaver to his fate...but the son of Thors feels bound to Denmark by his unfinished business with Canute.

“Far to the west, across the Great Sea…
there is a place called Vinland.
It is warm.. and fertile… Far from the slave trade and the fires of war.
There, you will be able to live without pain.”

Poor, poor Arnheid. When I watched the anime, that “home” scene literally made me burst into tears, which rarely happens to me. Her story is the ultimate “what could have been”, and it just makes me more upset the more I think about it. I’m glad that she is at least happy with her husband and children in the afterlife.

On a lighter note, I now have a new favorite character, Gudrid, who I can relate to in.. literally every aspect of her character. Doesn’t want to get married or become a housewife? Wants to travel the world? Stabs a dude? Well maybe not that last one but go queen, yes yes yes. THORFINN!!! Fight for her so she can get on the boat PLEASE!!!

Anyway..
It’s stories like theirs that remind me of how truly difficult it was to be a woman in those times. I am forever grateful I can make my own living, not have to marry for necessity, and travel wherever I please.

The true highs and lows of growth.

Vinland isn't a battle seinin like people think it is. The violence in a book like this is harsh, but it's the result of people trying to take something they feel entitled too, and it's always ugly. With probably some of the best drama and events of the Slave arc here, I was hooked. From the physical battle that seems very one sided, to promise made, and long awaited reunion of Canute and Thorfinn.

I didn't expect how Thorfinn would get to Canute or how their eventual confrontation would result how it does, but I loved how it kept me guessing. The Slave arc ends in the way it should. The start of the Expedition arc is much slower, and I did grasp the metaphor it was going for, but it just seemed slow to me. I'm sure it picks up with more story.

Vinland Saga is such a fascinating experience for me. I find it to be very similar to Berserk and other Seinen in that its greatest strengths lie in the calmer moments in between the action despite the masterful art making up the action. Where I think Vinland Saga struggles the most is in the fact that the action exists primarily as a means of conveying the horrors of violence and very rarely as a means of anything else. That ends up meaning that volumes such as this one soar above others due to a greater lack of those moments of action.

This volume of Vinland Saga veers a little farther from realism and suffers for it. The charm of this story for me is how our heroes grapple with the ugly society and beautiful country they live in, not the art in the battle scenes or whatever. This one is very on the nose, just as slow paced as usual and adds some silly shonen battle elements. Yukimura is good enough that he shouldn't need a free cargo of exotic trade goods or a second marriage alliance with the same family or a guy with a whirling chain attack or a guy crying in a barrel for weeks.

That being said, the end of the farm arc is absolutely incredible and worthy to stand up next to Kindred as a modern slave narrative that exposes the lie of the benevolent master. The inspiring speeches and declarations of intent from the main characters are great, when they get to them.

Farmland saga was indeed, peak. Great character development, themes, and execution. It goes without saying Thorfinn's development was fantastic, but several other characters have great arcs even Olmar. The climax was a great way to deliver the overall measage of the arc and I was glad to see that Canute is going to be a interesting layered character and not just descend into villainy. This arc got better and better as it went on and it fully cements Vinland Saga as "great" for me.

Too many important and incredibly written things happened in this book for me to pick one to joke about. It makes me so happy to see how far Thorfinn has come, him finally taking on the lessons his father had tried to teach him and using the knowledge to strive for something better than the world's current state is so amazingly heartwarming.

I totally ship Thorfinn and Gudrid.

Thorfin grows so much as a character being a slave on ketils farm. Then he gets free from slavery, goes home and asks einar his new friend from slavery and Leif to start vinland with him.
