A really good introduction to diabetes and the internal dangers of this insidious condition. It was well set out and explained things thoroughly if you have no prior knowledge. They also take the time to explain the different diabetic medications and their side effects. Still doesn't make me want to take any meds if I can avoid it. Diet and exercise are key!!

It really kicks you into action because the only one who can change your fate is YOU!

I think the biggest takeaway is the the Blood Sugar Budget where you are allowed 42-50 points a day or 350 a week. I struggle with knowing what to eat on a daily/weekly basis in terms of servings and portions. I know for a fact that I am carb heavy and am working on that now.

The inclusion of recipes with the points already worked out is handy. I might try to make some if I am stuck for food ideas.

Very factual. Enough facts to scare you into eating better and losing those "Covid19 Pounds" to avoid developing diabetes. My 82-year old father is Type 2 Diabetic and also has chronic pancreatitis requiring taking digestive enzymes before eating anything. He recently had to have a continuous blood sugar monitor prescribed and short acting insulin before each meal. He's having a dickens of a time managing his diabetes. He is not overweight. Only weighs 140-ish pounds thanks to the pancreatitis. Before that, he was only around 165lbs.

I was disappointed that the audio version from the library did not include the PDF of recipes.

A good Guide to get you on your way to the solution

I've been diagnosed with diabetes for about 15 years now. I didn't really learn anything new in this book. However, if you're just getting diagnosed, this would be a very good book to get you started on the right path . Doctor Rodriguez writes plainly and with the terms that the average person can understand . The book does come with 100 recipes that could give you an idea on the types of meals that you should be preparing , I found this very helpful . I recommend this book to a beginner diabetic.

Well presented and understandable. Doable lifestyle changes. Ignoring your growing weight and sluggishness will lead to your demise overtime. This draws out the long dying process, if no changes are made.

The Diabetes Solution is probably one of the most comprehensive books I have read on the issue - from describing all the problems leading up to prediabets, then the different types of diabetes, how it affects the body and how it works, lifestyle and eating changes, medication options, recipes to regulate blood sugar, and exercise suggestions. About the only thing missing are images for the recipes or to help visualize the technical discussions.

The book breaks down as follows: Part One (Know your enemy): Understanding type 2 diabetes; screening for type 2 diabetes; Understanding prediabets; Complications from diabetes; Understanding medications that treat diabetes; Understanding gestational diabetes. Part 2 (Manage your diabetes): Great foods, bad foods: what you should eat; The blood sugar budget; The recipes; Move it or lose it: how exercise and improve blood sugar; How stress and sleep affect type 2 diabetes; Bariatric surgery - when all else fails; The diabetes solution. Introduction, glossary, references are also included.

For those with a family with a history of diabetes, are currently overweight/obese, or over the age of 45, this really should be mandatory reading. Really, everything is covered in this book - there are no graphs, pretty pictures, or callouts - it's all text and it is written in a very no-nonsense, no fluff, 'this is how it is' manner. There is a lot of technical information (actual biological descriptions of why diabetes happens and how it destroys the body), from how diabetes testing is done, what to expect, to whether or not it would be worth it to get medication to control pre-diabetes symptoms. It's about a 2 hour, read, though, and very informative.

Make no mistake, this is a sobering view of the problem with complete discussions of the solutions available. As long as a person isn't full blown diabetic, the disease can be prevented. But at the same time, symptoms won't show up until far too late, so the reasons to get tested early and often are manifold.

Surprisingly, I really liked a lot of the recipes. It's all normal food, nothing fancy, and includes a lot of foods we eat regularly but managed with a point system. Items that cause sugar spikes have to be eaten in more moderation than items that don't - and they are all graded on a point system that equals 50 points a day. It makes it easy to use and follow the recipes (all of which have very easy preparation).

So yes, this is a very well written and comprehensive book - from pre symptom to post diagnosis.

This is not the type of book that I typically read. However, life circumstances have caused me to take a look at diabetes and all that it entails. This book gave me the answers that I was looking for. What I found is that diabetes is not for sissies! Knowing how and, more importantly, why you should keep your blood sugar in control takes work and commitment. With a good understanding of the causes and effects of diabetes, as you will find in this book, you can make wise choices and learn the how-tos and what-for’s of taking back control of your life.

In a very methodical way, the author presents the medical facts about diabetes and pre-diabetes in non-medical way. You won’t need a medical degree in order to understand the impact and ramifications of out of control blood sugar. In this book, you will learn how to control Type 2 diabetes and possibly reverse pre-diabetes utilizing lifestyle and diet changes found in this book.

Also included in this book are 100 recipes created by Susan Wyler, RDN that will help you to learn to eat smart. Add these delicious recipes to a regime of exercise and lifestyle changes and you can control your diabetes and reverse your prediabetes.

The first part of this book explains what diabetes is, how it works, what causes it and what it does to you. It also explains what prediabetes is and how to manage it and possibly reverse it through medications, supplements, diet, exercise and getting enough sleep. The second part of the book is about how to manage your diabetes. This book has a “budget” value assigned to foods in the form of points – sort of like weight watchers points and the points correlate to the nutrients and amounts of foods that you should eat. They allow 42 to 50 points a day and you must eat a certain amount of points from some categories and not eat too many from most of the categories. Leafy greens and non-starchy vegetables are unlimited and you should eat 5 or more servings per day. Some foods are taboo – including processed meats, refined carbohydrates, fried foods, processed foods, trans fats, sugar-sweetened beverages and all artificial and alternative sweeteners. That includes the 4 drops of vanilla stevia that I put in my half cup of coffee each morning. Not sure if I am going to drop that though. It has a recipe section, and while I totally love cookbooks and recipes, I don't really like these recipes and I don't plan to make any of them. I think they are just not the kinds of foods that I like. Someone else may like them though.

Dr. Rodriguez speaks frankly about the kind of serious damage that Diabetes can do often before it is diagnosed and before there are symptoms. This fact scared me and made me realize that I had to take the consequences of Diabetes seriously.

As a recently, diagnosed prediabetic, I was seeking reliable information and this book provided just that. The authors discuss the prorgression of the disease, medications, diet treatment and much more. Susan, Wyler, a Registered Dietician and cookbook author co-authored this book. There are sample menus and 100 delicious and appealing recipes which alone make the book worth owning.

While the author briefly mentions "thin prediabetics," this book's recipes and point system are designed with weight loss in mind. I'd love for one of these diabetes-management books to offer more advice for those who already exercise and have no weight issues.

Even though the book was marketed towards Type 2 Diabetics I actually found it very informative as a Type 1 Diabetic! I originally got this book because both of my parents are pre-diabetics so i wanted to educate myself on T2D to help them if they needed any help; The book is good and I'm genuinely enjoyed reading it in my free time.
I'd definitely recommend it to people who wanna get educated on Diabetes
