Breakfield and Burkey are a hugely popular and prolific writing duo – authors of the Enigma series of books. So far the main series has 12 books and Enigma Tracer is the first in the Enigma Heirs series. I can’t speak for all the books but I honestly thought this one should be classified as Young Adult techno mystery instead of techno thriller.
Within the manuscript there was just enough backstory so that I was not completely lost but I think if I had started with Enigma series book 1 – The Enigma Factor – and had read the whole series I would have enjoyed it more.
The premise of the story is interesting, a financial whiz kid is also a “black-ops-type” operative who teams up with her high-tech crew to bring a villain to justice. There is a world-class bad-guy that honestly makes my skin crawl, victims that evoke empathy and just enough suggested relationship drama to keep a reader interested. The story has environmental espionage, human trafficking, financial hijinks and character interaction that makes for a quick read. The technology used within the story was interesting, but can I say that the knowing how easy it is for someone to eavesdrop on all of a characters phone conversations just freaked me out LOL. I have too many conversations with my friends, that without context could be construed as threatening or criminal.
The story takes the reader on a whirlwind tour of the globe with stops in tourist hotspots as locations for the action and crimes. One thing I thought was really interesting was that at least half of the story takes place on a cruise ship bound for tropical points of call. It was a good plot device and didn’t call for a lot of scene description to slow down the storyline.
I do recommend this book to lovers of YA who might want to delve into the world of techno thrillers or mysteries I give this a 4-star. However I think readers of action thrillers would not find this book their cup of tea and probably will find it to be a 3½-star read. Just let me say from a book designer point of view, the ebook was beautiful and stylistic, but some of the paragraph stylings are lost on readers of ebooks who do not use the standard white background.
Recommend? I do recommend this book to lovers of YA who might want to delve into the world of techno thrillers or mysteries

Breakfield and Burkey open a new series along side their popular Enigma series - The Enigma Heirs series, and ENIGMA TRACER is Book 1. Charles V. Breakfield is a technology solutions architect (AI, cloud computing, security etc) while Rox Burkey is a business architect technologist as well as being consumed with writing fiction. Together they prove to be not only experts in the field of computers and all permutations of AI, but they also have mastered the art of composing stunning thrillers, populated with characters with whom we can identify.
For a new thriller series, the authors offer a bit of background in a Prologue 2 ½ years ago, in graduate school: ‘Gracie awoke with a start from the irritating buzzing that grew louder by the second, She rubbed her face to erase the dream that got disturbed and felt fresh air as she flung off her covers. She heard a familiar yet nearly unintelligible mumbling as if from a cave…’ – the noise source is her Mary Immaculate College in Ireland roommate, Bailey. One of the reasons the authors’ thrillers work so well is their attention to creating credible, fallible characters to initiate the tale.
To prepare for the fascinating thriller, they authors offer – ‘Phillip Pliant is the wealthy opportunist plastics dealer, and CEO of Pliant Industries. He’s also a master thief—creating a pervasive threat to the manufacturing infrastructure in the Caribbean islands markets. With the cartel as his stealth client, the naïve city leaders have been seduced, enabling the production of more than three-dimensional building materials and set the stage for massive chaos and destruction. Pliant has locked up contracts, assets, and control of any future expansion. His contacts and clients salivate over their probable financial reward—the expected profits are monstrous. Is the R-Group, now led by Gracie and the family heirs, strong enough to win against this predator? Can JJ’s CATS (Cyber Assassin Technology Services) act on the root-cause analysis in time? Will the R-Group and CATS sabotage Pliant’s plan before it’s too late? Will Gracie be able to squash Pliant and the cartels? Can the chain of islands survive the underhanded tactics and threats? Gracie never considered their lives would hang in the balance between winning and losing. Will the devious plot be uncovered in time?
The Enigma Heirs Series becomes an instant addiction with Book 1, that sort of literary commitment that underscores the pleasure of reading. Very highly recommended. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book
Enigma Tracer by Burkey and Breakfield, is a book that falls under the thriller crime genre. The story takes us through a deadly cat-and-mouse game to catch a dangerous opponent unaware. This quickly becomes a game where the stakes soon become high.
The authors, Burkey and Breakfield take time to give readers a good but interesting background to the story before delving into enchanting fast-paced events in the rest of the story. The story begins with Gracie, the heir apparent to R-Group, a family legacy, being asked by her former college friend and roommate, Bailey Smith to take up a case. Gracie promptly accepts and the two friends, along with their partners, Jeff and Keith, go undercover to embark upon a cruise to gather intel on Philip Pliant, the predatory CEO of Pliant Industries.
An important character in this story is Grace's twin brother JJ, who lends his support firmly along with a captivating cast of supporting characters from the Cyber Assassin Technology Services (CATS). The four leads will have to navigate through their demons, trust one another and work together as a team. Jeff and Keith are well-fleshed out as capable companions who are also a little jealous of their better halves' undercover positions.
I love how the characters became closer during the mission; their tenacity in handling the mission, especially Gracie and Bailey. Although it wasn't clear at first the challenges they went through helped them discover new sides to one another and drew them closer in the end. I was also intrigued by how the book discusses technology and uses all terminologies related to the subject without being boring or becoming difficult for others to understand.
I give the book a perfect rating of 5 out of 5 stars. It made a fantastic read, the suspense, and thrill of a chase were well-portrayed and the message was conveyed to readers yet filled with several unpredictable turns. The character development and relationship improvement which was birthed by the events also made it easy to connect to the story.
I highly recommend this book to lovers of thrillers, fast-paced plots, and strong action plots. It is a must-read for longtime fans of the authors.

Without a doubt, I had a great time reading this book. The writers do a fantastic job of creating vivid scenarios that immerse readers in the lively atmosphere of the cruise ship while contrasting a feeling of luxury with the ominous shadows of a secret. They create a rich tapestry of personalities that intersect in unexpected ways by introducing a wide range of people through precise prose, each of whom is hiding secrets and reasons. Enigma Tracer: Enigma Heirs-Book 1 by Charles Breakfield and Rox Burkey is a mystery book about a young lady and her crew who embark on a journey to uncover the truth behind the wicked schemes of a wealthy businessman. Gracie and Bailey are best friends and were roommates during their last years in graduate school. Later on, they separated as they were now occupied with their jobs. They still kept in touch and called one another even during work hours. One day, Bailey called Gracie about a problem involving the CEO of Pliant, who she suggested is an ecological gangster. In a plan to track down this man and find out what he is up to, the two ladies, along with their boyfriends and Gracie's twin brother, devised a way to trap Phillip Pliant. Do you think their plan would work out?
Opinion: Considering the book was captivating, I will spotlight some parts that stood out to me in the book. The book begins with a prologue that explains Gracie and her best friend's preparation for a presentation. Gracie's close friendship with her roommate seems to have started when Gracie began attending graduate school. After the graduation, Gracie felt a bit of regret, knowing full well that they would soon return to their various homes. After their separation, they still contacted one another and even worked together. The ladies made efforts to solidify their friendship by constant communication, which I view as precious. Furthermore, cooperation is one value I came to appreciate while reading, Gracie and Bailey, her best friend, together with their boyfriends, Jeff and Keith, worked together including JJ, Gracie's twin brother. Their main focus was the goal of catching the culprit using a strategy. This undeniably added more to the already captivating story. Lastly, the plot stands as the foundation of the book. With it engrossing narrative, it proved to be a unique tale. It highlighted the tactics that were planned as a bait for Phillip Pliant and also various technology which was provided by JJ to sabotage Phillip's plan. Apart from all this, it also describes the romantic relationship between Gracie and Jeff, which made the whole plot a satisfying one.
Enigma Tracer is a suspenseful thriller featuring Gracie and her family involved in an undercover detective organisation, CATS. In this world, they play heroes and save the day but relationships threatens to fall apart and they must fight to protect what they love before they lose them.
With a total of 44 chapters and 231 pages, this novel can be finished within a week. The themes mostly present is action, mystery, suspense coupled with a little bit of romance.
Brrakfield and Burkley simplify and familiarize us with CIA terms like R group, Darknet and the likes. However, the book has a very dull beginning and might get readers to lose interest immediately but events picked up in Chapter 2 and it got quite exciting. Rising from bed could be described with more vibrance and detail.
I particularly love how the authors underscore how much relationship matter. This was highlighted in the bond between Gracie and her mom and the one between her and her twin brother, JJ. I love the history switch too and different places I got to know about through the author's eye view, simply exquisite.
If there was one thing I appreciated the most, it was Jeff and Gracie's love where they both understood each other without saying so much. When their love encountered harsh condition, they agreed on giving each other the needed space and that helped them realize their true feelings and made them stronger.
Misunderstandings leads to assumptions and communication play a vital role in relationships. Breakfield and Burkley centres their attention more on the professional setting which made the character roles feel more real and believable.
It's not as gripping as expected of a supposed thriller. The book had too many characters so one might need to catch up. All in all, it's a great book for young readers who are into action sprinkled with a little romance here and there.
Enigma Tracer kicks off a new and exciting series by Breakfield and Burkey. Gracie, the heir apparent to R-Group, has taken up a case brought to her by her former college roommate, Bailey Smith. Gracie and Bailey, along with their current beaus, Jeff and Keith, go undercover to embark upon a cruise to gather intel on Philip Pliant, the predatory CEO of Pliant Industries. Using their wits and charm, along with a captivating cast of supporting characters from the Cyber Assassin Technology Services (CATS), the foursome engages in a treacherous cat-and-mouse investigation.
Authors Breakfield and Burkey do a fantastic job laying the groundwork in the opening chapters, establishing the characters and their backgrounds. Gracie and Bailey are quite likable, and their chemistry is palpable. I appreciate that they’re not two Mary Sues, as Gracie has impulse control and anger issues, and Bailey seems to struggle with alcohol. Jeff and Keith are well-fleshed out as capable companions who are also a little jealous of their better halves’ undercover positions.
Once the story gets going, Enigma Tracer is an exciting read. The dialogue between characters does a lot of heavy lifting for the exposition. The operatives discuss their dates and socialize while on their actual mission. This adds a fun layer to the story and shows that the next generation of R-Group is still young and inexperienced.
Enigma Tracer is highly recommended to fans of technothrillers, and fast-moving plots, and is a must-read for longtime fans of the authors. Dramatic, high-tech action fills the pages of this gripping story. I highly recommend readers experience the sharp writing and enthralling plot that Breakfield and Burkey bring to their series.
This was a fast-paced and enthralling technothriller. The authors managed to build an almost YA setting and tone to the writing, adding a new level of the genre to their growing series. While this book serves as the first in a brand new series, the story falls into the overall Enigma universe and while enough backstory is laid out for the reader to enjoy this book, an understanding of the first books in this world will allow the reader to really appreciate the stakes and history behind the protagonists’ role and backstory.
The authors did a wonderful job of capturing the thrills of the genre while also balancing it out with rich character growth and the emotional roller coaster that the protagonists find themselves in while trying to maintain their own balance between their personal lives and their professional lives. The ruthlessness and cold nature of the villain made him someone readers will enjoy rooting against, while the heroic journey and evolution that Gracie especially goes on will serve as a great counterbalance to the villain’s journey. The drama and passion that develops for the characters romantically serve as a great foundation for the evolution of these characters in an International technothriller setting.
The Verdict
Astonishing, heart-pounding, and entertaining as ever, authors Charles Breakfield and Rox Burkey’s “Enigma Tracer” is a must-read technothriller that meets YA international mystery that readers are not going to want to put down. The blend of the previous novel’s mythos with the modern-day characters and the rich themes and character arcs will keep fans wanting more as this epic struggle and battle unfolds.

I have not read any other books by Breakfield and Burkey and worried I would miss pieces. However, the authors did an excellent job filling in all the blanks, and I could follow along without any issues.
Enigma Tracer takes the reader on an undercover job aboard a Caribbean cruise. What I found interesting were the characters’ planning discussions before they boarded the ship. The discussions are enough to help understand the technical side of what they will be doing but don’t give away what the characters will do.
The friendships are clearly defined, and the dialogue is natural. Following the story had some twists and hardships. This is a great young adult book, especially if you are into detectives, mystery or technology.
I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review. This is not the first book by this duo that I have read. I have read others and this is part of the Enigma universe but the first in a new series. I have to say that I was not disappointed. There was a lot to take in this new set. I love Gracie. It kept me on the edge of my seat to see how it would all turn out in this first book. Wondering what is going to happen next.
