It's been a hot minute since i read a "MNLAAV" light novel and i figured "eh. why not? i'm already 12 volumes deep. let's keep going"
So volume 13 focuses on Cezar, a secret love interest from the second game in the series. He's basically a prince from another nation who falls in love with Katarina. Because of course he does. my GOD this lady has like a 25 charisma. she's literally the equivalent of a dnd point buy with no maximum and every single stat except for dex, con, and charisma is an 8 and she dumped everything into those 3 with making her charisma a 25.
This is also kind of a doubled edged sword though. Sure Katarina is nice, but she is SO incredibly bad at reading people who are into her, that it's beyond believable. I mean, i know i've been accused of being dense on this topic, but my god. Compared to her, i'm Sherlock Holmes. 90% of the cast is in love with her and she is only aware of two because they flat out said it to her. It gets annoying after a while.
That being said, the plot for this one isn't anything special to write home about. it's about Katarina hanging out with Cezar, getting to know him, taking him around town, making him feel better about his past, and he ends up falling in love with her. That's really all this volume has. there's a LITTLE towards the end with Katarina's dark magic going out of control for a minute, but that gets easily resolved.
I feel like, 13 novels in, the author is really trying to stretch this out. The whole "Katarina hasn't picked someone yet" schtick, all while introducing a new guy into the mix, is getting a little old. she already has (and this is just from memory) Keith, Jeordo, Maria, Mary, Sophia, Nicol, Sora, Rafael and now Cezar all in love with her. and honestly, i'm sure i missed a few. my GOD we don't need to keep adding onto the pile. There's some intrigue with Sarah (evil lady) and dark magic, but the author spent SO MUCH TIME going over Cezar and his backstory in this one, we barely got to move the main premise along at all. It really feels like he's stalling for time.
This brings us to the elephant in the room. Katarina's romance. After 13 volumes of this, i've been able to really think about who makes the most sense for her to end up with. There's two schools of thoughts on this.
1. She picks someone 2. She picks no one and spends her life as her own wacky self.
Let's start with #2. This is an entirely viable option. Maybe she doesn't want to romance anyone as she doesn't wish to lose anyone. Maybe she turns everyone down and says she wishes to be free. That's entirely plausible and can work with this kind of story. A lot of characters and fans would be disappointed by this, but being the free spirit she is, i could see her being beholden to no single person. She's more a force of nature rather than a love interest.
The first option. So when it boils down to it, Katarina needs from a partner 1. someone who doesn't get insanely jealous when she's helping/being friends with other people.
Let's make a list of the people who are currently in love with her (from the main cast).
Keith, Jeordo, Maria, Mary, Sophia, Nicol, Sora, Rafael, Cezar
so in order to pick who makes the most sense, let's start eliminating some.
Keith and Jeordo are off the list immediately. Both of them are WAY too jealous and protective and if they were in a relationship with her, would stifle her immensely. always worrying and wanting to put her in a gilded cage which 100% wouldn't work for Katarina. Also removing Mary because she's just crazy and is also very jealous.
Cezar is also off the list, because Katarina would never leave her home country, leaving all of her friends behind. just wouldn't happen.
That leaves Maria, Sophia, Sora, Rafael, and Nicol.
I feel any of these COULD work, but you also need someone who knows how to deal with her and her wackiness. you need a combination of letting her be herself, but also putting your foot down when she's being DANGEROUSLY naive. not so much as being authoritarian, but speaking concerns. Unfortunately, i don't feel like Nicol or Sophia could handle this.
That leaves Maria, Sora, and Rafael. Then there needs to be RAW PHYSICAL ATTRACTION. Just the concept that Katarina would THINK they're attractive and want to be with them. That removes Raphael.
So, when all is said and done, from the previous 13 books in total, i feel that either Maria or Sora would honestly be the best for her. Jeordo is by FAR the worst and would be an AWFUL match, but either Maria or Sora are great options to be honest.
I know the author JUST released volume 16 like... a week ago, but i really wonder how many of these are left. The author is really grasping at straws, publishing copious amounts of filler in these later volumes rather than continuing with the dark magic story (literally less than 20% was about the main plot)
The writing style was fine as per usual, characters were in character, and everything was FINE, it was just so much status quo. Not bad, and i'll keep reading more, but MY GOD can we finish this story?
I kinda feel like Keith was being too controlling as he demanded Katarina tell him everything and forbade her from meeting with Cezar. True some of his reasons are valid as Katarina is like a danger magnet, and he is definitely worrying about another rival, but this was just so annoying.
Ah yes, another new harem member, and interesting broader things happening politically. Continues to be a wonderful easy read. Compulsory heterosexuality still sucks.
