I’m supposed to be meeting with Emory’s dragon Court and amazing them with my suave wit and shining intellect. Instead I’m on the trail of a kidnapper. Someone has stolen away a centaur teenager, Alfie, from a magical circus. The circus master has hired me and Gato to find out who took him – hopefully before Alfie swims with the fishes.
The problem is, no one in the circus is who they say they are. The Other Circus is a front for a magical underground, helping those that want to leave their magical lives far behind. They’ve spent years keeping their heads down and their mouths shut and it’s going to take more than asking nicely to get this bunch to crack.
The clock is ticking, not just to find Alfie, but also for me to impress Emory’s dragon Court. When I finally meet them, I’m going to have to pass through a series of consort challenges before they’ll recognise me as Emory’s intended mate. Oh, and they won’t tell me what’s a challenge, and what’s not. Nothing is what it seems, but luckily I come with an inbuilt lie detector. I’m itching to prove to the standoffish dragon-shifters that I’m more than a pretty face but finding Alfie has to come first.
I’m juggling things as best I can, but all it will take is one wrong move to bring everything crashing down on my head …
I liked these books, but there was reference to Hess in the last book that I had missed & I guess I have missed a book. The adventures are so twisty & turny. I was happy to see a main character come back from the dead and sorry to see another die. But overall I really enjoyed these books. Love Emory and Jinx and the final finale was a great ending.
Challenge of the Court is the next part in the Other series and picks up from Book 4, Glimmer of Deception. Whilst it is not necessary, you do probably get a bit more out of this series if you have also read Glimmer of Christmas, and the Other Wolf series that follows Jinx’s best friend Lucy, who was turned into a werewolf to save her life in Glimmer of Death. In this book, our main character, Jessica Sharp, or Jinx (only her family and close friends get to call her Jessica), has been engaged to Emory, the Prime Elite of the Dragons, as well as many of the other sentient creatures of the Other. However, to be accepted by the Dragons, and actually allowed to become his Mate, and thus the Prima of the Dragons, Jinx must pass several challenges as deemed by Emory’s Court. It has taken a long time to set up a time for everyone to come together and meet between the different schedules of Emory, Jinx and the members of the Court, but finally a date has been set. At the start of the book, Jinx is just finishing up a job at a circus, one that supposedly has members of the Other using magic in its acts, and she has been sent to uncover them as a P.I., rather than using a member of the Connection. Jinx makes some interesting discoveries (I’ll let you read about that, no spoilers), but whilst she is there, she is approached by the head of the Circus, to ask for help, as one of his younger members has been kidnapped by the looks of it. Jinx finds herself in a quandary, the young teenager who has been taken, is actually a centaur who was hiding at the circus as it is a front for different people from the Other who have gone into hiding. They stay in the common so that no one knows that they are Other, so young Alfie just appeared as a teenage boy, not a centaur. Jinx can’t leave a missing child, but she also can’t leave the challenge, and so, she takes on both. Using Hess, her assistant who is still desperately trying to redeem herself, to do a lot of the leg work for her, Jinx starts a full-on hunt for the teenage boy, whilst at the same time, heading off to the challenge. On heading to the castle which houses the Court, she comes across Shirdal, the Griffin. Bastion is otherwise detained, busy with Lucy and so has asked Shirdal to come and look after Jinx. Shirdal is a brilliant character, all Griffins are assassins, they have an urge to kill, they can’t stop it, like we need to breath, they have to kill, they can’t help it. So, to alleviate that, they act as assassins. Most work under a code in which they won’t do certain things (No innocents, kids etc). Shirdal however, has turned to the light, and has given up killing, but it is painful for him, so he drinks to dull the pain, and is almost constantly drunk, well, that is the appearance he gives off anyway. He can go from slobbering drunk, to deadly assassin in the time it takes you to blink. But his dialogue is hilarious. He offers his services as bodyguard to Jinx, and she willingly accepts his services and friendship. Once at the castle, Jinx is subject to some pretty petty and pathetic ‘challenges’, things that are nothing but insulting, not only to her and Emory, but to the people involved. She calls out those involved, telling them they are pathetic, and if they want to challenge her, do it – and unwittingly walks right into a trap that has been set for her by a malicious Dragon, the Mother of Greg Manners who hates her for turning her son into a werewolf. And so, Jinx now faces a true Challenge, one not seen for several hundred years, and one that may just cost her everything, including her very life. And she still has to find a missing teenager yet!! This is everything you have come to expect from Heather G Harris, faced paced, fun, action, with magic, and lots of sarcastic wit that will have you laughing so hard you will lose your place (this is not a book to be listened to in public). As with all her books, the world building is just outstanding, from the different locations, to the various magical beings and the magic itself. The thing I really love about this story, is that it is so immersive, you really feel like this is an actual story, when Jinx relates something, you know she has done it (like jumping out of a helicopter to parachute), and you have to wonder if the Author has actually done it? Then there are emotional aspects to the story and you really feel them to – it is powerful writing and exceptionally well done. I love to, that whilst there is romance in her books, she doesn’t feel the need to get carried away, it is subtle, keeping it fun. Harris has a really clever writing style, and whilst she does confront things like death, and loss of loved ones (I mean, characters die, it is Urban Fantasy!!), she is both supportive of her characters, but also has a wicked sense of humour in other parts of the book to balance it out. Whilst the story is told from Jinx’s point of view, we get to see so many wonderful characters, Emory, Nate, Shirdal, Amber (have to love Amber!!), and of course Gato. There are a lot of other great characters (too many to list), but each one is brought to life with so much realism, you feel you know them so well! Betrayal of the Court picks up from the events of book 1 in the series, and finds Jinx facing a multitude of different things coming at her from all different directions as she is trying to prepare for her wedding. At the start of the book, Jinx is at a murder scene in the quiet town of Portmeirion where 2 Satyr have been bludgeoned to death. A third Satyr has escaped death, and is a sort of witness to the murders, although he didn’t actually see who killed them. The two Satyr’s who have died however, seem to have a pretty sordid past, (I should add for anyone that has triggers with Sexual Assault – just be careful, there is nothing graphic, but read with care), and Jinx seems to understand why they have ended up as they have, but still needs to work out who did it. At the same time, the Eye of Ebrel has been stolen from the Dragonhoard, a multi-million-dollar gem that has significant relevance to the Dragons as it is tied to different prophecies about their future wellbeing. And whilst Jinx has passed the Challenges and been accepted as the potential Prima of the Dragon Elite, Emory’s decision to aid Lucy in her recent conflict, and the subsequent outcome that saw the Gargoyle’s being turned into Brethren has to be judged by the Dragon Court. If this is not enough, the Anti-Crea movement continues to become more active, with Jinx being one of their main targets. Even with Shirdal at her side, Jinx suddenly finds that things are becoming quite uncomfortable in the Other Realm, as there seems to be enemies on all sides. But when she discovers that a good portion of this could be due to a Demon’s influence, the hunt begins to find the Demon before it is too late. Betrayal of the Court is a little darker than the previous incarnations of the Other Realm, as we see the Anti-Crea movement really starting to put a lot more pressure on Emory and the Creatures, and this is having significant blow back on Jinx. In this book, there are a lot of different story-lines all converging towards a thrilling end to the 6th book in the Other Realm series, as Jinx and Emory try desperately to hold everything together, including the role of Prime Elite. The Other Realm Series has always been a standout in the Urban Fantasy Genre, with its unique main character who is not just the standard magic using P.I., but she has an intelligence, and wit (sarcastic wit!) to her that makes this story hilarious, during what are some incredibly tense or even tragic moments, taking the edge off of things, and making it a really fun read, whilst at the same time, keeping it at an adult level. Harris does a marvelous job of hinting at sexual relationships between the characters, without boring us with pages of graphic detail, (again, just some wicked humour that leaves you laughing out loud at the most inappropriate times, especially if you are listening to the audiobook!). The magic and combat sequences are beautifully detailed to provide some riveting scenes that leave you with no doubt what has happened, fully immersing you in the story, and her world-building is outstanding, from the generic world, to the stunning vistas of the Other World. Harris has created this magical place that is both unique, but, at the same time, pulls on all of the elements we know from the fantasy genre so we can still indulge that core love of fantasy. However, the best aspect of her work is her Character writing, with these gritty, intriguing people who are so incredibly realistic, with attributes and personalities you can see in people from real life (even if they are magical beings!) It makes the story that much more believable and so much more fun. And that is what this is all about, exceptional story-telling for escapism with outstanding characters and some stunning world-building. This is another episode in a story not to be missed, as Jinx and Emory have to face a whole slew of new challenges before they can have their wedding. Revival of the Court opens with the Wedding of the Century, you are cordially invited to the wedding of Jinx and Emory! It is all set to happen, Jinx and Emory are exchanging vows, everything is beautiful. And then the Connection arrive, dozens of agents come to arrest Jinx on trumped up charges that she was acting as a fake agent of the Connection when she worked with Stone originally. With Stone dead, and his reports doctored to state that Jinx was not deputised, she is arrested, but rather than being taken back to the Connection to be processed, she is instead whisked away to an Anti-Crea black site. This has been their ploy all along, to separate Emory and Her, so that they can finally get Jinx and torture her. (I should note that anyone who has triggers for torture, suggested sexual assault – should read with care). Jinx finds herself trapped, isolated, and at the hands of mad-men, hellbent on making the last hours of her life a living nightmare. I don’t want to give away spoilers, you will have to read it to find out if Jinx escapes. In the meantime, Emory and the rest of the group are not only desperately trying to find Jinx (Hell hath no fury like an Enraged Dragon Scorned), but there is a Daemon on Earth, causing utter havoc – targeting creatures, and it is only Emory and the gang that can stop it, before it unleashes a terrible toll using the Anti-Crea movement as its tool. This is quite a dark chapter in the Other Realm series, a lot more adult than the other books in the series, as Jinx is taken to some really dark and nasty places. With Emory having being removed as the Prime Elite in the previous book, he is already feeling removed from power, and the impact of what happens to Jinx brings him undone. It is a fascinating start to this book as we almost see our two most powerful characters taken out of play and some incredibly powerful players on the other side moving around and taking control, or making dangerous moves. Everything that Emory, Jinx, and even others such as Lucy, and other creatures have begun to build begins to crumble as the Daemon starts to unleash its final plan. This is Harris at her best, as we see Jinx alone, desperate, and frightened. But this is a dangerous thing, for Jinx does not curl into the corner, she comes out fighting. We get to see a side of Jinx we haven’t seen before though, one in which she is not playing from a hand of strength. We also get to see her allies without her and Emory, having to use their skills, to come together and rally not only to find her, but to protect Emory and all of the creatures. This is an epic final part to the series, and sees the culmination of several different storylines all coming together. It continues to be one of the best Urban Fantasy series on the market today, with brilliant characters, stunning world building, thrilling magic and combat, and a storyline that leaves you unable to put the book down. Most of all, it is just a great FUN read, something that a lot of stories have forgotten how to do, Harris has created a magical story that is so good to immerse and lose yourself in..
Oh my goodness, I absolutely loved listening to this set of the three books in the other realm court series. The characters were amazingly written, the storyline was perfect with its twist and turns, and the narrator did a phenomenal job! I thoroughly enjoyed this set of books!
I have read all these books (and the previous ones) individually and now I got to binge read them! Woohoo! What a win! As it is, this series is one of the few I reread at least once a year, I CAN'T get these outstanding characters, I CAN'T get this outstanding world, I CAN'T get this incredibly compelling series out of my head! It's lodged, firmly, in my DNA, it's a world I carry around me constantly, with much delight!
My favourite PI and her amazeballs hell hound Gato and their unique crime solving are on the prowl again and this time, they land smack bang into a circus. But it's not just ANY circus, it's a circus of outcasts, of those hiding from the Connection, well, and from anyone that would, you know, end them.... and it's up to Jess to solve yet another mystery, yet another murder or two...Right from the opening chapter, these books really grabbed me, although, Heather's books always do. She's a force of nature with her ingenious writing style, stirring up a massive tornado, gaining momentum and power and depositing me gently once it dissipates. With the magnificent array of characters, the incredible pacing, terrific plot and superb world building, it's an almost impossible task to put any of her books down. I get caught up, entangled, each and every time. This series reiterates how much I love Jess and her snark! As I was reading the series, all my love for this fabulous character, Jess, came crashing down on me, totally overwhelming me in how full my heart was, alternating between feeling like a proud mama at her growth throughout the series and wanting to be her bestie! Absolutely adore her! As I do the beautiful love she and Emory share, he's the dream boyfriend, gorgeous, tough, tender, understanding, loving and he's the head honcho of the supernatural world, and it definitely isn't a hindrance that he's super rich.
Talk about great characters! Every imaginable shifter, Dragons, Gargoyles, Griffins, Centaurs, Wolves, Ogres, and more. So diverse and firmly team Jess, if I ever needed anyone to help me survive a potentially deadly challenge, I'd call on Shirdal, Amber, Jack and Nate too! Which reminds me, yes, Jess has to "prove worthy" of being Emory's Prima in the Dragon Court through an antiquated trial where the stakes are high, really high. Life or death high...all manufactured by a very devious Elizabeth, who I honestly wanted to bop her on the nose. There were a few scenes, one where the seer has a predicament or two, had my heart nearly stopping! No, it's true, all sorts of scenarios were chasing around my head. With one safely resolved, the other will had me gnawing at my fingertips until it came to pass and the other with a Phoenix, so tense but a visual delight. And I have to pay homage to Amber, I absolutely adore her! She's really a special character. She's a witch I really would love to befriend, not only because she's so cool but also because she NEEDS a friend. She has this aura of stoicism and business like approach, so friends are not a commodity she has. She doesn't let people in, being abrasive and snarky at every turn but I love the soft spot she has for Jess, although she'd deny that emphatically!
I love Jess's sleuthing! This series has it in abundance, her PI skills are fabulous. Jess has grown incredibly throughout the series, from her beginning in The Other Realm to this series, one can't help but be a tad in awe of what she has accomplished. I love how her powers keep growing, I absolutely love everything about her. Her BFF Lucy is awesome! When Lucy organises a party for Jess, I was smiling and giggling the entire time. I LOVE the addition of Indy! Although Gato has his hands full with her... she's added an extra element of fun.I had a smile on my face the entire time I was reading this series, an impending wedding always evokes feelings of peace and happiness, although....Heather lulling us into a false sense of security, so when it DOES hit the fan, oh boy does it hit hard! And splatters everyone in it's proverbial path. And twists? You want twists? They can't get any better, my jaw dropped in disbelief, at one particular scene and no, I'm not going to tell you... just know this, I'm not sure who was more astonished, me or Jinx! There's a quote that really stood out to me, how delightful is this? " They say vengeance is a dish best served cold, but clearly they haven't met my fiery dragon". I love how "normal" Jess is in this book, she's vulnerable and afraid, not something that she's used to. But things, as they inevitably do, go from bad to worse, way way worse! I'm reeling from certain events, my brain feels like it's filled with cotton candy, all hazy and fluffy!
So,to wrap it up, a real rollercoaster ride, thrilling, exciting, intoxicating, rousing, sometimes hair raising but always fun. Heather definitely upped the ante in this series, It was superb! I can't tell you how many times I chuckled and I laughed out loud, a lot! The humour throughout was magnificent! So well placed I didn't see it coming until I snorted! Not very lady like but heck, when you read it you'll get it! It's impossible NOT to snort laugh! By the same token, I had this gnawing in my gut from the tension and I even shed a tear or two! The Anti Crea, the Connection, the mystery and the drama at full throttle, Jess has no option but to put her imminent wedding plans on hold...YES! WEDDING! To the superbly dashing Emory and the HEA is one so beautifully warming, my heart threatened to implode with happiness
What an outstanding series and way to read this series/collection! I was able to watch the characters develop their powers, continue to work through deep personal issues and deal with betrayal and shocking twists in their lives through all the stages in their journey. Without stopping.
All the stories flow together seamlessly and reading them becomes a joyful marathon experience, shortened only because my dog has needs and I wanted coffee.
I don’t want to give away more of the many plot lines described than are listed in the blurbs because Harris delivers characters that are so much more complex and interesting than they initially appear to be.
We get a long overdue visit and meeting with the Dragon Court, complete with locations, lots of politics and historical or just ancient beings. Trials, mysteries, and more importantly , engaging new characters and threats to Emory and Jinx’s relationship and lives, as well as the status quo of the otherworldly beings by the anti-beast faction.
This has everything one could want, and written so fantastically. Action, suspense, mystery, romance, and much more.
And the ending is so satisfying I was left grinning with deep delight.
My bookshelf is groaning in anticipation because I’ve already decided I need these in hardback.
Love, love, love this and the preceding omnibus too. Grab these up!
I started the first book of this series, Challenge of the Court, as a single book, but then this omnibus version was released so I traded my one book in for the whole series in one. I love omnibus editions! The best part is finishing one book and starting right into the next without having to do anything except turn the page.
About the series itself — I loved this second installment of Jinx and Emory’s love story. It’s gonna be so hard to talk about it here without dropping any spoilers! I can say that the action is bigger, the romance is both better AND more complicated (exes coming out of the woodwork, flirty mermen and griffins, among others), and the stakes are higher than ever. Also, the hilarious relationship between Shirdal and Reynard is *chef’s kiss*.
Not gonna lie — the heartbreak is also bigger. But that’s what happens when you fall in love with the Prime Elite. The bad guys get badder, too. But luckily, Jinx discovers that she collects bonds like a dragon hoards gold. Her friends and allies surprise them all. But then, so do her betrayers.
We are back with Jinx and Emory as our main protagonists, with some now known side-characters as side kicks. This omnibus is full of magic, fantasy, mystery and some fade-to-black romance. It's as the other books, fast-paced without being rushed with great world building and some real what the heck moments as the story have some interesting twist and turns! There is an HEA at the end but it is not a smooth ride to get their and there is some major stuff happening in between the beginning and the end of the story. Another great installment in the HGH's Other world series. I am sooo hooked and in love with this world and the characters stories and struggles challenges they are facing and that I just cannot stop reading/listening to these books. Highly recommend! But start with the prequel (Glimmer of dragons) and then just enjoy the ride of this series, 'cause it's freaking awesome!
When you come to a new author you never know what to expect. Sometimes it's not so good, sometimes it's good and every now and then you read something that is just fabulous. For me, the first book I read of Heather's left me smiling so much and searching for anymore she had written. These books do not disappoint in any way shape or form. I enjoy the world she has created, I love Jinx, Emory, Lucy, Amber Lea, Gato, and others. Their interactions with one another, the way the friendships built between them. I love that it's set in England and Wales. I enjoyed the way the story developed and moved along. For me, it was such a joy to read. Long may it continue.
This story line has developed steadily from start to finish. I like the way this trilogy (like the first collection) was published. It flows seamlessly from one story to the next without the distraction of additional covers and credits. Heather Harrison has developed a unique worldview that draws the reader into it. There is pain, and hope, and happiness throughout. The characters are well written, the problems are unlike other worlds and the final solutions are rewarding. Enjoy the read.
This whole series is amazing! I love the character development, the setting, the world building, and the personalities of the characters.
Heather G Harris does an excellent job of spinning a tale with characters who are individuals in a world I would love to live in.
I hope you love Jax and Emory ad much as I do. If so, check out the other couples I'm the same world Lucy and Greg (aka Manners), and Amber and Bastion.
A great read, the story line is fast and inventive. Only once did i feel that something was not well concluded.
Great characters and settings, but...
The consistent usage of American slang in the books broke the narrative. That, ,along with a French gargoyle/black seraphim who only had a French accent twice put me off. It interrupted the story for me, and it made me long for an editor or beta reader or another writer to help fix this.
Jinx gets to push the limits again and again and nothings stopping her. There are always some out there trying to take her and her family down, but she's not going to let that happen. She's fighting with an ever growing arsenal, and she has truth on her side. Emory isn't going to let her do it alone either, and his support is making her stronger. Together, they're protecting the creatures of the Other.
I've lost track of how many times I've read the jinx series. its so unbelievably easy to make the whole world disappear while immersing yourself completely in the magic, the wickedness, love, betrayal, and tantalising twists and turns. As with All Heather G Harris's series, it comes to a beautifully wrapped up conclusion that makes you want to throw your kindle/phone/ book across the room because that can't possibly be the end of it! Cmon.... it can't right?!
These are the continuation of Jess (Jinx) as she travels to the dragon court. There are people after her as usual, and as usual she takes care of it. She gets injured but gets up and lives to fight another day. There is a big battle, some fatalities but in the end it's a good ending. I like the characters and the friendships that are in the books. I suggest these are all read in order. Highly recommended.
So many twists and turns -incredible characters, great dialog, the drama, the mystery and the surprises!! Jinx & Emery are the perfect couple and it becomes a challenge to stay together with so many distractions, evil factions everywhere!! Wonderful story not to be missed!!
Compelling, hilarious, feel-good, entertaining, thought-provoking, gut-wrenching, emotionally satisfying, sad, funny…
Politics, personalities, investigations, action, human/creature error, undermining the status quo, surprises, wedding planning, and everything else you can throw in the pot—or plot? Delightful!
The ending sucked. Mainly because it was the end. So far I've finished this series and the other wolf series. I seriously hope the author revisits both series to add to the series and give glimpses into each characters life. The other witch series is next and I'm hoping it carries all the character forward.
This is a fantastic series. Jinx has a kidnapping to solve but all is not what it seems. The dragons are putting her through her paces and Elizabeth Manners tricks her into a life threatening situation. I loved the friendships in this series, that really shines through in the writing!
I’ve enjoyed this series and I’m sorry that it ended! Heather G Harris is a wonderful writer with a great imagination. I look forward to reading more of Heather’s stories.
I absolutely loved this whole series from start to finish. I loved the snarky, brave, intelligent, and loving characters. The villains were evil, despicable so we could cheer when they died. There are creative twists and turns and the world building was fantastic.
Another great story in this ongoing series. The drama the suspense and the entry made for compelling reading and listening. I can’t wait to read the next book now as always the narration was excellent.
The other realm is awesome, love Jinx ,Emory ,but most importantly Gato . I laughed and cried. Was almost sad to finally reach the end, though hopefully this is not the end for Jess and co
This series had me laughing and had me in tears. That is saying a lot. The saddest part is that it is over and I had to come back to the real world. Thank you for sharing your world with us because it is an amazing world.
Totally captivating. The storyline kept me riveted and I was enthralled by how well the characters were depicted. Great plot twist on the villain. I usually can sort out the bad guy, but not this time! Very well done!
Jessica solves several paranormal deaths in the community. Her hellhound Gato helps her navigate back in time. She and her paranormal friends have great adventures to keep you interested. And romance is provided by her boyfriend, who is also a dragon !!!!
I've loved everything I've read by Heather. I do blame her for keeping me up all night to read just one more chapter! I currently live a hermit like life due to cancer whacked immune system and her books transform me to an "Other" world.
Such a great high note to end on! My but my heart hurts for the losses. So beautifully done ! I'm getting the next set on Amazon, can't wait to see what's up next for Lucy, and then Amber!
And Gato, Emory, Lucy, Nate, Shirdal, Raynard, Mike and the whole team are as unique and as awesome as each other. A well earned ending, not without some melancholy-loved it and all the Others set in the Other!
Absolutely loved this series! I love the characters and the plots. I had difficulty putting them down and ended up reading them pretty quickly. Jinx, Prime, Lucy, Amber, they’re all amazing as are the stories that branch off from each series.
