This came into my life at a great time. I am working hard to unlearn many cut-corners and errors in my artistic practice. I am self taught and work from references mostly and have become proficient at this, but there are foundational skills I have missed while teaching myself.
This is a great reentry into paint and paper, practicing skills in color and texture work as well as shapes. I love the tactile feel and experience of these prompts. It is fun and specific and is actually teaching me skills that I will be able to add to my artistic strengths.
Most of my work is digital, because my fear of messing up on paper is palpable and hinders the boldness of my brushstrokes. Layers also are a godsend to me in digital work. This book serves as a sort of antidote to that fear, because the stakes are low, and also, the activities have so much texture and implied layers to them. I love these exercises and will practice them often.
I have enjoyed working through Kate’s book‘Creative Abstract Watercolour: The beginner’s guide to expressive and imaginative painting This book really brought me a lot of joy, as I loved the patterns and colours in each project. I felt a great sense of achievement as I worked through new techniques to develop my art skills. Just a brilliant book and highly recommend to anyone looking for a fun and creative activity.
One of the rough parts of buying art books for Kindle is that, even with a decent preview, the art and artistic style of the actual projects isn’t viewable. This is not my style at all. And I’m sure I’d support the use of the word “abstract” — which is a pretty well recognized artistic style — in the title. Oh well. You win some; you lose some.
