Rodney Rathbone must protect his reputation as a reluctant hero when he takes on team sports, and a football bully, in this laugh-out-loud follow-up to How to Beat the Bully Without Really Trying and Call of the Bully.
When Rodney Rathbone tries out for his school football team, the outcome is incredible: he isn't cut! His father is thrilled, but Rodney isn't. And before long, Rodney starts to wonder, is it more difficult to make the team or stay on it? Especially since his arch-nemesis is now technically his teammate, and he seems ready to show Rodney who's boss. And Rodney's mother is now the restaurant reviewer for one local paper and Rodney has to go along, escargot anyone? Reluctant hero Rodney Rathbone is back in school trying to live up to his fame. Can he?
A fifth grade teacher for over 17 years in Hicksville, New York, Scott Starkey's had plenty of firsthand experience exploring the reading habits of students. The elements they enjoy best in a book — humor, suspense, and a dash of irreverence — are woven into his Rodney Rathbone novels, How to Beat the Bully Without Really Trying and its sequel, The Call of the Bully.
Best-selling author Jim Trelease notes, “Scott Starkey really understands kids, school, and the language of both,” and calls How to Beat the Bully, “terrific, very well written, and right on target.”
A graduate of Hiram College in Ohio, Scott was raised around writing. His father has authored several scholarly works and his mother, Joanne Starkey, is a longtime food critic for The New York Times. Scott’s experiences accompanying her on restaurant reviews plays a surprise role in his third Rodney Rathbone novel, due out in January 2014.
Scott received an M.A. in Elementary Education from Adelphi University and a Professional Diploma from C.W. Post University at Old Westbury, New York. In addition to his writing career, he participates in anti-bullying events and continues to lecture on the subject. His other passion is encouraging young people to read. Knowing that half the battle for parents and teachers is finding books that can hook a kid’s interest, Scott makes sure that humor and adventure are never far from the action in his middle grade novels.
Scott Starkey resides in Long Island, New York, with his wife, Judy, and their three children.
Rodney Rathbone is starting middle school and hoping it will be better this year. Things look promising when he gets recruited for the football team on his first day. His old enemy but current protector, Josh, is as well. Of course this doesn't sit well with Trevor, who's place he is taking. The coach just wants to win against the rival team and thinks Rodney and Josh are the way to go. Rodney's best friend Rishi becomes his manager and has all kinds of ideas on how to promote Rodney. Rodney is also trying to make up with his girlfriend Jessica after she broke up with him during the summer. All this on top of the fact that his mom is the new restaurant critic for the paper and has to eat at all kinds of places. One of those places really wants a good review and Boss at Mama's is making sure Rodney is going to deliver.
This story was a bit over the top crazy, but it was a fun one. There is a lot going on and most of it hard to believe. The whole Mama's storyline is beyond crazy with the weird Russian/Italian infusion food and the gangsters running the place. Rishi is so over the top you can't imagine someone like that in real life. And then there is Rodney's evil ex-teacher who is out to get him and destroy everything around him. I thought it was funny that no one could see the big picture in this book except Rodney and no one believed him when he tried to explain it. I think kids will enjoy this one, boys especially.
Rodney was getting bullied and he could not stop anything since the bullies are older than Rodney. Rodney is only 13 years old and he joined his schools football team. He is scared that Trevor would beat him up because Trevor is one of the bullies that Rodney hates. So when Trevor bullied Rodney, Rodney just ignored it and told his parents. Then his parents went to Trevors house and Trevor got in trouble and his mom told him, " Trevor you are not suppose to be bullying Rodney since he is on your football team". At the end of the book, Rodney and Trevor became friends and they didnt fight with each other.
