Cavalier's Gambit #1

Cavalier's Gambit

Rate this book
Wayne dreamed of piloting a thirty-foot-tall walking robot that was closer to a battle-tank than anything else.

They were called Walkers.

They were armed with laser cannons, rockets, missiles, and heavy kinetic weapons more similar to artillery pieces than guns, and everything that went with that.

Unfortunately, he had been declined military service.

His only avenue left to become a Walker Pilot was to make it happen all on his own.

Under his own power.

With his own hands.

Literally.

Working his fingers to the bone, saving all he could, and digging through junkyards and salvage pits, Wayne made it happen.

One part at a time.

He was now, finally, at the starting line.

Having built a very rough Walker that he had cobbled together himself, he scavenged a few weapons that were perfect for starting out and had just enough money to afford ammunition. His long-term dream was just about to start.

Perhaps even forming his own Walker Mercenary company and hiring people to work with him.

Except just as he finally moves forward, his home world is about to take a gigantic leap backward.

With Wayne at the center of it all, without ever truly realizing it.

Did Arand write this?

Or was it a shadow writer? I haven't seen Arand write a story before where every character stutters. Nor have I seen him write so many "I mean" statements when characters are talking. Over 50 times characters in this story started a sentence with "I mean". That's something younger writers do. Not something a writer Arand's age does.

Too many of the female characters were great looking. (All of them were great looking.)

Nobles don't and wouldn't act the way they did in this story.

It really seemed like a late teenager or someone in their early twenties write this.

This story lacks cohesion, a main theme and subsequent story arcs. It's written by the seat of the writer's literal pants...which isn't good. Like if the author, or the main characters all suffer from ADD or ADHD...
There are no maps, no inside illustrations, no character summaries, no main character descriptions, no real-world-building describing the systems (economic, social, political, geographical, religious, etc.) in place in this Sci-Fi other world. Because it's format is digital one can't even use the paper (from a traditional book version) to clean one's *ss.
I don't recommend this book or this series.

Starts out badly, gets better

Sci-fi / Harem (No sex- no sex scenes) / Battletech
I enjoyed this book by the end, but I did not like it at the start. It starts out very choppy with little to no context, flat boring characters, and no real story or point. This is a two star book for a long time.

In January of 2023 Daniel Schinhofen published a harem/ Battletech book (it sucked), followed in September of that year by John Van Stry (Who's book was worlds better, and his mecha were more like Gundam) These guys all like to riff off of each other So William D. Arand did his book too -This one here (in Feb of 2024). Expect one from Cebelius sooner or later.

Fiction writers never write out everything the character does, But they usualy indicate where the jumps are with joining sentences like "Until he went home" -or- "After that". This book is written entirely in first person present and omits those joining sentences.
Example: The character will be in battle fighting for his life, then he is on the toilet thinking about getting lunch. is this days later? weeks later? how did he get out of the battle? you never find out.
You get used to the jarring transitions (or you quit, both fine choices) It's mildly interesting to read this experiment in narrative minimalism, but only mildly.
Later in the book it settles down and reads more like a conventional book where the chops & breaks make sense.
The addition of the female mechanic also saves this book. If you can get that far you're golden. it all turns around at that point.

I quite like Arand and his pen names but something was strange about this book. It felt like an editor went through and was like "oh, were you giving context to what the main character is doing? Nah, don't need it. Explaining motivations for actions? Nah, scratch it."

In fact, as I'm writing this review I strongly believe Arand made a bet with someone that he could write Forrest Gump into one of his books. The MC casually accomplishes feats that astound everyone around him but he barely even conceives of what he's doing. He bumbles from one crazy victory to another and earns accolades out the wazoo for vaguely named reasons. He doesn't seem to care at all and seemingly keeps taking jobs just for the hell of it? It's not like he needs the money after about halfway through the book. He also doesn't seem very patriotic. The stakes were always explained poorly and I still don't really understand what was propelling the MC to move forward.

On the love interest front, MC comes onto every pretty girl that has a name and instead of being really creeped out by him they seem to love it? Its seemingly explained that the MC's honesty is refreshing and enjoyed but there's being honest and then there's spewing a bunch of verbal diarrhea about how he would really enjoy having sex with them in different positions and how he'd been stalking one of the love interests for years and would love a picture to wank one out to later. Just really strange stuff and as a fan of this genre and this author I'm pretty surprised by it.

On a positive note, I was compelled to finish the book just to see what happened so it wasn't the worst book I've ever read.

Amazing book 1

Could not put this book down. Didn’t know what to expect when I picked up this book but was already a fan of the author, so thought I would give it a chance. And so glad that I did. The main character is a person with zero filters, which makes for some hysterical interactions. Had to keep reading to find out what happens next and before I knew it I was done. Can’t wait for book 2 to come out.

Bounces around without a clear direction.

This had weak characters and a story without a solid direction. One is bag enough, but both just ruins the book.

This was so good

I love William stories. So I'm definitely biased towards him

I never got any updates about this book at all, I didn't really know what to expect going into it. This was so freaking good

Start to finish, I would hooked. Couldn't put it down, just going right through it. For real. Read this book

A strange MC, but it works

Not your typical MC, this one seems to have verbal diarrhoea but mainly in the area of telling women they are attractive, and that he would like to do more with them (although never goes through with any of it). He has outrageous luck, and with an implant he becomes a Walker pilot (think Mech Warrior). With a strange AI eating program stuck in his implant and an artificial eye enhancing him, he becomes a fearsome pilot with a bevy of attractive women that he just seems to flirt with. Plenty of witty banter and innuendo make it interesting, oh and the Mech Warrior style battles are also quite enjoyable to read. I would like another book in the series please Mr Arand.

Read it

I did not like this book
The story has potential to be very very worth reading ,but it falls short . There is way to much advancement in rank of the main character and he ain't Superman
Many plot holes and pot holes hahaha

DNF, got like 45% through and I've had enough. I'm not interested in reading about nonbinary characters

Really interesting, read this in one day

The MC goes from struggling walker pilot with a home-built bot to a licensed and in-demand pilot. Then he gets wounded and the medical compensation along with an unknown AI chip he stumbed upon has an unexpected side effect. From there he becomes a one man army during an invasion, flirts with a number of hot women and eventually finds himself being elevated to the nobility. Then his fortunes really take off.

It was interesting how insightful he is at some social clues, yet completely missing others. He has serious interest from 4 women, but one blows it. Though he talks a good game he is still taking it soooo slooooooooow in developing his relationships. No carnal relations have occurred, still the MC continues taking on high risk- high reward military missions. He seems to have missed the concept of YOLO where affairs of the heart are concerned!

As always, Mr Arand's writing is engaging, exciting and filled with multidimensional characters and excellent worldbuilding. Some of these interesting characters, as in our world, lose their lives. I look forward to sequels to this universe and also to "the honor of duty"

Boys Own adventure with big stompy robots

This book is basically a power fantasy for teenage boys, complete with giant robots, a dashing hero, and bond girl castnates, with a "Carry-On" vibe harem-buulding sub-plot that's more innuendo than anything.

The protagonist is a 6'3, handsome, a gearhead tinkerer, a natural pilot, an unintentional ladies' man - what every teenage boys wants to be.

The world-building is underdeveloped, the science soft and from a military standpoint lacks realism - it feels like it's mostly there to justify the next awesome robot fight and flirting session..don't get me started on the women. They're all beautiful, strong, and inexplicably drawn to Kai. The misogyny is real- but actually so over the top it must be satirical - right..?

But here's the thing: it's still fun! Silly, exaggerated, cringe but oh so much fun 😁

So, if you can overlook the childishness and the misogynistic undertones, Cavalier's Gambit can be a surprisingly entertaining read. Just don't expect anything deep or meaningful.

It's a Boys Own adventure with big stompy robots - enjoy it!

Hands down my favorite Arand book so far. And i've read like 4 of his series totaling like 14 or 15 books. MC was super hilarious, and the story was pretty enjoyable even if over the top. In a book a read last week i commented on the female voice narrator who i thought sucked, well this one is the exact opposite. She was wonderful, especially her voicing of Tink. Rebecca Woods i think her name is.

One complaint though was in the epilogue when those three people that MC had on his squad in his last mission all transfered over to be in his squad permanently. Like it just happens without any input by him on whether its ok or not. Wayne Hesh is the hottest ticket in the solar system, a Lord with full say so on any team he puts together and what, just anybody can join up without clearing it with him first?

I don't even know why I picked this up. I know in the back of my head I will be disappointed.

This was actually good. I enjoyed it. There were the author's usual default archetypes for women (the shy timid girl who doesn't mind sharing, the upfront girl who is down for anything, the prim and proper lady, etc, etc), but it wasn't emphasized.
When girls show up, we have the usual nonsense not-serious flirting from the protag like in other books, but the smut wasn't pushed onto you like usual, which was great.

I'm afraid that book two is where the sex starved protag goes wild.

I will pick up the sequel and hope that doesn't happen. I also hope that this doesn't go into the author's "server-verse".... But I can already see how an AI eating person can be incorporated....

The book is engaging, but as some others have said, it's almost like it doesn't know what it wants to be. I really love the idea of building a mech from spare parts, and keeping it going with whatever equipment you can find. But it only does that in the very beginning.

It really feels poorly written. There's a diverse cast of characters, that feel like a wide array of ages, but somehow the MC is the same age as all of them. As some others have said, the dialogue is not great. The flirting in combat towards the beginning of the book feels fun and like a great way to break tension. Towards the end he feels like a creep that just hits on every girl he sees. Which is basically every character in the book.

By the time I got to the end, I basically just skimmed the remaining pages. No investment in what was going on. It's not a bad book, but I think it's fair to call it a hot mess. There's fun to be had and it can be pretty engaging. But it's poorly assembled and cobbled together from bits that don't quite work together. When your writing is the same as your narrative device... xD

I really enjoyed the book's plot, even if it was one of those "The MC does everything themselves in an over the top way every time" stories.

The MC is a character the author has done before, just with a different name in a different setting. He talks to himself a lot. He has diarrhea of the mouth when talking to women, saying truly outrageous things for no reason. I don't recall exactly which one of his multiverse MCs did all of this same schtick, but it was disappointing to see a retread character.

Had fun with this one!

Add some snark, strong MC, mechs and a paper back style dime novel and what do you get: a fun read. Keep your IRL garbage, I get that everyday when I walk out the front door. Just kick back with a cold one and munchies and enjoy the book. This will not win major awards, but it is what it is: a dime store paperback novel.

Nice to find these little surprises.

I like the story, but I find I'm tired of the standard Arand MC. The obsessive flirting and the particular type of "endearments" used take up too much of the word count.

A shame, as the story overall and the action were pretty good, but I just can't give this a 5 when so much of it had my eyes nearly rolling out of my head. Not sure if there are plans for this universe to continue, but I'll give book 2 a shot should it appear.

well worth reading

I have been a fan of Battletech / Mechwarrior for decades.
I’ve read most of the books and can say that this lines up as being as good as most of them.
The comments the main character comes out with while being semi conscious from illness made me genuinely laugh out loud as I know I can relate to it.
Maybe not the same kind of wording but in the uncensored waffle because the brain is not totally in charge of the mouth .

When’s part two?

-1 for using they/them pronouns. English is a gendered language, like almost all languages on Earth. This is not so much a political statement, but a statement in protest of newspeak. Read 1984 for details.

This book does start a little disjoint and choppy, hopping from scene to scene with nary a transition to be found. But I think this is a device our author used to rush the story through the introduction phase and get onto the space opera story he wanted to write.

Very enjoyable

Arand took a story that I expected to be filled with tropes and the usual hijinks and made it his own: full of surprises, an interesting MC, and a storyline that I wasn't expecting. Very, very good.
It's easily my favorite of his stories so far.
Exciting and enjoyable. Highly recommend.

A Fun Time

Some excellent Battletech fanfic, cleaned up for publication. With an impending harem because Arand always has a harem.
Wayne pilots walking robot tanks. He's a good fighter, and sees a lot of action. Creativity, aggression, and a computing superpower help him win some impressive victories.
Recommended.

Wow? Yuppers wow it is!!!!

Ok, to start, thought you couldn't get any better? I mean c'mon all your books are great. But just when I think that stuff starts sounding the same ole same ole , you reach into that wonderful imagination of yours and write a book like this. Well done and thanks for great read.

Top quality, Great banter

As the title says, top quality book. Biggest highlight for me was the great banter and fun dialogue. The MC is absolutely one of the funnest I’ve read for quite a while. Seriously love the goofiness/ horrifically honest word vomit he spits out lol.
Looking forward to more like this.

Such good

So, another excellent Arand story, this time with cool mechs.
Think Titanfall and battletech. Though again with Arand, it's more character and interpersonal relationships heavy, which is great and terrible, I would have liked more mech; parts, system analyses, build design and descriptions... though there is plenty.
Now for the waiting game.

Space Command meets Captain Marvel

The story has that space command type of vibe with a hero who stands out like an over the top Captain Marvel but with a sort of harem. I enjoyed the story although the kinky harem talk was a little much at the end. The story had a nice flow and I had fun reading it.

An excellent space opera giant robot adventure

It’s got everything. A clueless protagonist, high tech, giant robot battles, hot chicks, bad guy and big guns. Oh, and a sorta but not really harem.

Already looking forward to the next installment so I can find out who comes out on top among the various women in his life.

Brilliant start to a me series.

William has done it again with another great book, what makes it better it's Tuesday it's the stat of a be set of books. Loved the banter the MC has with others, the works building was good look fussed to where this goes and really looking first to where this goes.

Walkers? Space? Lots of fun to be had for a loader.

The start of another fun series for William D. Arand. What do you do when the military turns you down and you don't have any real prospects for how to live in a futuristic world that spans systems?
You make your own mech, out of whatever you can cobble together.

As Expected

Arand is a talented writer, if you’ve read him before you know what to expect, and he delivers. Using “walkers” as the vehicle to carry the story took a little time for me to get used to, but it eventually works. I feel his relationships to be a bit on the juvenile side, but his characters are entertaining. It’s a fun read.
