Every Preacher Needs a Wife, Right? Being a preacher in the countryside is not for the faint of heart nor faith. Four inexperienced preachers face a myriad of challenges including those who figure a man of the cloth needs a wife. Can they meet the expectations of "helpful" congregants and be true to their hearts? Convincing the Circuit Preacher by Carolyn Miller Australia, 1863 -- As soon as Dorothea Maclean saw the country preacher, she knew Mr. Hammill was the man of her dreams. Now she just needs to convince her wealthy parents--and Mr. Hammill. Mail Order Minister by Kari Trumbo South Dakota, 1889 -- Olive's parents mail-ordered a preacher and prayed he'd be a husband for their daughter. The rest of the town--and Olive--have other ideas. The Mountie's Rival by Angela K. Couch Canada, 1907 -- Tired of living in his twin's shadow, Jonathan Burton is frustrated to find himself serving as a still wet-behind-the-ears preacher in the same community as his Mountie brother. How is he to find a wife when all the eligible women of the community seem enamored by his dashing brother in scarlet uniform? The Angel and the Sky Pilot by Naomi Musch Minnesota, 1910 -- A preacher with a checkered past sets off to win souls in the lumber camps like the "sky pilots" before him. But can he earn the respect of hard-living men--and still respect himself--after a local trader's daughter joins the congregation?
Fascinated by history and in love with creating fiction, Angela K Couch has been lost in writing novels most of her life. As a passionate believer in Christ, she can't help her faith from permeating the stories she tells. Often her martial arts training, love of horses, and appreciation for good romance sneaks in there as well.

Courting the Country Preacher is an engaging, inspiring collection of four sweet historical romance novellas steeped in faith penned by four very talented writers. The stories transport the reader back to four charming small towns in Canada (1907), Australia (1863), Minnesota (1905), and South Dakota (1889) with beautifully sketched settings. These well-written stories of love and hope feature captivating yet vulnerable heroines and dedicated minister heroes who were easy to connect with and root for. Each story is individually noteworthy making the collection more appealing. I enjoyed this collection and recommend it as a worthwhile read. I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley with no obligation to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The Mountie’s Rival by Angela Couch -Set in 1907 Alberta, Canada. Good story. There is a little rivalry between twin brothers Jonathan and David. I loved Jonathon and April. Good Christian Content with The Lost Sheep parable and other parables. ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
Convincing the Circuit Preacher by Carolyn Miller -I loved that this story is set in Australia, in 1863. Jonas is a widower and doesn’t want to marry again. Thea is a fun character that isn’t as ladylike as some would hope. She embarrasses herself a lot in front of Jonas. I loved this couple. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
The Angel and the Sky Pilot by Naomi Musch -This story is set in 1905, Minnesota. Everett has a bit of a past with carousing, before becoming a preacher. Angeline works with her father, who she calls “Captain” Angeline is very curious about things of the Bible and I loved how much Everett discusses it with her. I also enjoyed the lumberjack elements. Great story. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Mail Order Minister by Kari Trumbo -This story takes place in South Dakota in 1889. Olive’s parents have sent for a minister to both lead the church and possibly marry her. She is set to not marry a man her parents set her up with. Finch is attracted to Olive but doesn’t want to get entangled with someone based on his feelings ever again. But they can’t fight their feelings. I liked this story and thought it was cute. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
The Mountie’s Rival by Angela K Couch It was a good short story. It was sometimes difficult to read Jonathan’s insecurities especially regarding April. We as humans hold pastors in high regard especially for the position they have, but in the end they are also people with the same insecurities as all of us and this was a good reminder of that. It would be nice if more attention was paid to how he grew in this through his faith etc.
Convincing the Circuit Preacher by Carolyn Miller what a nice story. I really like Thea and her personality. Eliza (sister) was really really an addition to the story a very nice character that I really like. jonas and Eliza are nice together. writing style of the story was good and I definitely recommend this book.
The Angel and the Sky Pilot by Naomi Musch This story is the best of the collection. I really enjoyed it. The way it is written but also the storyline. Angel and everett their story is beautiful. The way faith is incorporated made me think a lot and is certainly inspiring. The bond between angel and captain is beautiful, especially in that time. I will definitely keep an eye on Naomi Musch and see what else she has written.
Mail Order Minister by Kari Trumbo It was nice how the story had started with such a topic. You often see this nowadays where there is a split in the church. It was a good story. I was bothered by certain characters in the story. It certainly makes me think about my own willingness to forgive others.
all in all this is a collection I would recommend. One story appealed to me more than the other but that is to be expected and that differs per person.
Courting the Country Preacher is a charming collection blending romance, faith, and hope in the most delightful way. Four stories, four different preachers, and four unique locations, yet each tale carries the same heartwarming message—faith guides us through even the most unexpected turns in life. The authors, Angela K. Couch, Carolyn Miller, Naomi Musch, and Kari Trumbo, have woven together beautifully crafted novellas that whisk you back to a time when small-town churches were the heartbeat of the community.
I love how each story showcases not only the preachers’ personal journeys of faith but also the challenge of balancing God’s calling with the tug of the heartstrings. From the far reaches of Australia in 1863, where a determined woman seeks to win over both a preacher and her tenacious family, to the South Dakota plains in 1889, to the Minnesota lumber camps in 1905, to the rugged wilderness of Canada in 1907, where a preacher struggles to step out of his Mountie brother’s shadow—every story is a refreshing reminder of God’s grace, guidance, mercy, and love!
While the sweet romances had me smiling, it was the faith woven into each page that made this collection stand out. I found myself cheering for these men of God, navigating love while remaining anchored to their mission to serve. There’s something so comforting about seeing these characters lean on prayer, trust in God’s timing, and step forward in faith even when the odds seem stacked against them.
Each novella is entertaining, brimming with moments of lightheartedness alongside the deeper spiritual reflections. The settings, whether deep in the Minnesota woods or among the South Dakota plains, added richness to the reading experience, making the historical backdrop just as captivating as the characters themselves. You could almost feel the bite of the cold air in the lumber camps or hear the faint clop of horses on dirt roads in these small towns.
At its heart, Courting the Country Preacher celebrates the beautiful interlacing of love and faith. This collection will have you laughing, reflecting, and holding your breath as you watch each couple face obstacles and find their way to one another. If you’re looking for an uplifting, faith-filled read with the perfect blend of history and romance, I highly recommend giving this one a spot on your pages.
I received a digital ARC of Courting the Country Preacher from Barbour Publishing and NetGalley. I am not required to write a positive review in any way or for any reason. My honest and unbiased opinions expressed in this book review are my own. My review focuses on the writing style, the pacing, and the story’s content, ensuring transparency and reliability.
This collection of stories were so enjoyable. I kept thinking that each of these sweet novellas set in different western towns would make a great made for TV show. I felt each one had vivid settings. I appreciate the fact that each were clean and sweet romances. I recommend this book of novellas to anyone who loves western stories with an inspirational message and likeable characters. *I was given a copy of this book by the publisher and this is my honest opinion.
The Mountie's Rival - Rowley, Alberta, Canada (1907) Convincing the Circuit Preacher - Picton, New South Wales, Australia (1863) The Angel and the Sky Pilot - Northern Minnesota (1905) Mail-Order Minister Baker's Nook, South Dakota (1889)
These stories are sweet romances. There is religion and faith throughout each story. Some of the stories put more of an emphasis on this than others. I liked that each story was a different time and location. I don't read many stories that take place in either Canada or Australia, especially Australia. Each story has some drama and a happy ending. Some were more drama filled than others.
This anthology was an enjoyable read. It was interesting to read such a unique collection of historical romances with preachers as the main characters.
The Mountie's Rival by Angela K Couch
Jonathan Burton has arrived in a small town to start his position as the new preacher, when he realizes his brother has also been stationed there as the local Mountie. He is frustrated to once again have to share his life and the attention of pretty, quiet April with his more popular brother.
I loved the descriptions of this little community and the people in it, especially from April's view at the top of the water tower. While I did feel that Jonathan's character was a bit worldly for a preacher, it was a good reminder that preachers are just as flawed as the rest of us, and I can't expect decades of hard-earned wisdom from a young, new preacher. The development of his relationship with April was very sweet, and I wish this had been a full-sized novel. It could easily have been fleshed out into a longer story, and there were a few areas that were rushed or never received a resolution. I would like to read more of this author's work.
Convincing the Circuit Preacher by Carolyn Miller
Jonas Hamill is temporarily filling in for the local reverend. As a widower who lost his wife and child to a fire, he has spent the past 3 years as a circuit rider, avoiding deeper relationships and the commitment that comes with being the pastor of a church. When he meets Dorothea "Thea" Maclean, he tries not to fall for her and risk his heart again.
I enjoyed the fact that this story was set in Australia. I don't think I've ever read a novel set in that country before, except for On the Beach by Nevil Shute. My favorite character was Eliza (and Henry!). I liked the basic fact plot of the story, but too much of it felt glossed-over and rushed, and there didn't seem to be enough plot or character development. The dinner scene with Aunt Agatha was a good example. She is known as a strict, disapproving, judgmental woman, and she treats Thea as would be expected. But then all of a sudden, in the middle of a conversation with Thea, Aunt Agatha has a miraculous personality transplant and becomes kind, faithful, and loving. It didn't fit at all. Despite these negatives, I enjoyed reading the story and would like to read some of her full-length works.
The Angel and the Sky Pilot by Naomi Musch
This was a fantastic story!! I loved it so much, and it is my favorite so far. Everett Shepherd is a circuit preacher whom God has called to the lumberjack camps of northern Minnesota. As a former lumberjack himself, he is well acquainted with the rough, immoral life that most jacks live. Angeline "Angel" Adair is the daughter of a local merchant and has a strong desire to know more about heaven and God. Everett and Angel spend time together while he answers her questions and helps her to study Scripture. As Everett finds himself falling for Angel, he also struggles to forgive himself for his sinful past, even though he knows God has already forgiven him.
The faith aspect of this story was top-notch. I loved how deeply the author dove into so many areas of spiritual life and the struggles we face. Everett struggled with temptation, forgiveness, and not giving in to the reactions of the flesh as he faced hurdles to reaching the men around him. It is worth buying this book for this story alone. I can't wait to read more of her work! I appreciated the historical note that explains how this story was inspired by real-life "sky pilots" who shared the Gospel with the lumberjacks of Minnesota's Northwoods.
Mail-Order Minister by Kari Trumbo
After a church split, the town of Baker's Nook is left with two churches and no preachers. Each church has a man on his way to town to become their new preacher, and one of these men is Finch Presly. He was hired sight unseen by Mr & Mrs Torey, the only elders left in the church. The Toreys prayed fervently not just for the right man to fill the pulpit but one to hopefully also be a potential husband for their daughter, Olive. Unbeknownst to them, Olive is aware of their hopes for a match between herself and Rev Presly and is adamant that she will keep her distance and not fall prey to what she considers an arranged marriage. Finch is determined to remain a bachelor after being jilted by his former bethrothed. Despite their efforts to remain aloof from each other, they end up spending an abundant amount of time together as Olive is manipulated into showing Finch around town to introduce him to the residents of Baker's Nook, and then ends up spending her days helping him to prepare the neglected church for its first service with the new preacher. They start to fall for each other, and tensions rise as the new church's preacher changes his mind about taking the job and elders from the church approach Finch to convince him to be their new preacher, but with one requirement - he must marry one of their daughters!
This story did a good job of showing the ways small-town dynamics can play out after a church split and how misunderstandings, rumors, and gossip can cause a lot of damage. I appreciated the themes of repentance and forgiveness in this story. Some of the aspects of the plot were rather ridiculous, but it was still a sweet story, and I like how the author pulled it together in the end.
Thank you NetGalley and Barbour Publishing for providing an advanced copy for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
I'm not one for a lot of fiction or romance, but this book of 4 shorter stories was a good experience. Some of the stories need to be continued. ;) Set in history, the characters and the action are realistic and believable. It was fairly clean, though there are scenes with kissing before marriage and suggested passion.
COURTING THE COUNTRY PREACHER: FOUR STORIES OF FAITH, HOPE...AND FALLING IN LOVE by ANGELA K. COUCH, CAROLYN MILLER, NAOMI MUSCH, AND KARI TRUMBO
The Mountie's Rival by Angela K. Couch
Set in Rowley, Alberta, Canada, 1907
This is the charming story of Jonathan Burton who is a rural preacher who has fears. Fears of not being enough for his congregation, he fears competition with his brother who is a Mountie.
April Harvey is the daughter of the town drunk. She is always trying to prove to the townsfolk, that she is not the same as her father. She has a lifelong guilt for a decision that she made.
I like how the author takes these two imperfect people and shows them that they are good enough and proceeds to make their lives better.
A quote from this story and it is true. Kindness is key.
Convincing the Circuit Preacher by Carolyn Miller
Set in New South Wales, Australia, 1863
Jonas Hamill is the local circuit preacher who is filling in for a regular preacher in a town near his circuit. He is a widower who never desires to marry again.
Dorothea "Thea" MacLean is an unmarried woman who lives with her parents. She thinks there isn't much hope in her finding someone to love and marry.
It's interesting how God can take your impossible seeming life and change it to something possible and believable.
A sweet quote. But faith in God brings joy and hope. A woman of her aunt's vintage. I like this.
The Angel and the Sky Pilot by Naomi Musch
Set in North Minnesota, 1905
Everett Shepherd is a preacher who used to work in the timber industry. He plans on going to several logging camps and spreading God's word among the workers.
Angeline Adair is the daughter of Captain Adair, who owns the local mercantile. She works in the store for her father and fends off the unwanted attentions of the loggers.
Captain Adair calls Everett a Sky Pilot, that's what the loggers call preachers. I think it sounds sweet.
Mail-Order Minister by Kari Trumbo
Set in Baker's Nook, South Dakota, 1889
Olive Torey's parents are looking for a preacher for their newly formed church. Their church had recently split into two factions They hope to get the new pastor interested in Olive, their unmarried daughter.
Reverend Finch Presly has no idea that the elders of the newly formed church want him to marry their daughter. He doesn't want to marry her, but they keep running into each other in town.
I like how each story is a complete story, though each is a short story, you are not left hanging and they are good for a "quick read." Highly recommend.
I am thankful for the complimentary copy of #CourtingtheCountryPreacher from #BarbourFiction #BarbourPublishing I was under no obligation to post a review.
I just finished these four delightful stories, and I enjoyed each one! I've previously read several books written by Carolyn Miller, so I knew I'd like her story, and I've read at least one other book by Kari Trumbo, so I was also pretty sure of hers. The other two authors, I knew by name only. First up was Angela K. Couch with The Mountie's Rival, then Carolyn Miller's Convincing the Circuit Preacher, followed by Naomi Musch with The Angel and the Sky Pilot, and finally Kari Trumbo's Mail-Order Minister.
Growing up in his twin brother's shadow, Jonathan Burton takes his first pastoral posting far from home, only to find his Mountie brother seated in the pews on his first Sunday in the pulpit. Jonathan is looking for a wife, but how will he ever find the right one when every woman in town flocks to his brother? When the one woman he's interested in appears to turn to his brother, will moving away be the answer, or will he find that helping her will change the course of his life?
Thea Maclean has spurned every man who has tried to court her, including some that her father has specifically introduced her to as possibilities. Meeting the new circuit preacher causes her to finally see a man she could love, but what will it take to convince her father - and Mr. Hamilll that he is the best match for her?
Everett Shepherd knows what it is like to have God step in and turn his life around. His checkered past gives him unique insight into the hearts of the lost. When he's called to minister to the lumberjacks at Camp 13, he expects some push back. He doesn't expect to meet Angeline Adair and her father on his way to the camp, nor does he expect her excitement to hear him preach. Her hunger for the Word of God, and her beauty hook his heart. But if she knew the man he had been, could she ever love the man he is now?
The last story closely resembles a mail-order bride story, except it's the minister who is sent for by mail, and yes, the church elders who sent for him hope that he will marry their daughter, whose independent spirit has turned her against every man who has shown interest. As town gossip turns against them, can their building friendship turn to more?
I'm not sure I can pick a favorite here, but I especially liked The Angel and the Sky Pilot and Mail-Order Minister. Both showed the difficulties these men could face in working out their call from the Lord. I can't imagine just walking into a lumber camp, bedding down in the barracks with the other lumberjacks, and expecting them to listen to anything I had to say. And, having recently been a part of a church that split, I know the pain involved on both sides and walking that tightrope with grace as Finch Presly did in Mail-Order Minister made me respect his character. I enjoyed all of the stories, but these two stand out to me. I also love that each story can be read in a few hours, so I basically read the whole book in about 3 evenings. I definitely recommend this one!
I received this book free through #NetGalley and every opinion here is mine.
These four stories show a preacher's life can be anything but dull.
Up first is, "The Mountie's Rival," by Angela K. Couch, set in Canada, 1907.
When Jonathan arrives for his first preaching assignment, he finds his brother, David, is posted there as a Mountie.
April works as the pastor's maid and cook. Unknown to each other, April and Jonathan feel an immediate attraction.
April is the talk of the town because of her drunken father, so she believes Jonathan will never have any interest in her. Jonathan thinks April would only have eyes for his brother, David.
Will they ever see what is plain to everyone else?
Second is, "Convincing the Circuit Preacher," by Carolyn Miller, set in Australia, 1863,
From the minute Thea and new preacher, Jonas, met, the two were smitten with each other. But Thea's father had no intention of his daughter being involved with a poor pastor.
After warning Jonas to stay away, her dad packed Thea off to another town to stay with a maiden aunt. Thea thought that would be the end for the two of them, but God can make a way when there seems to be no way.
The third installment is, "The Angel and the Sky Pilot," by Naomi Musch set in Minnesota, 1905.
Everett, a former rough and tumble logger, has become a Christian, and turned his life around. Now that he has returned to minister to the loggers, the men test him in many ways, especially physically. The camp trouble maker, Mick, leads the charge against him.
Everett has fallen in love with Angel, but dangerous Mick loves her, too. Mick holds nothing back while trying to get rid of Everett.
Mick hopes he can chase Everett off once and for all, and keep Angel for himself.
The fourth is, "Mail Order Minister," by Kari Trumbo set in South Dakota, 1889.
Pastor Presley arrives to find his new church is reeling from a split, and half the town is not speaking to one another. Vicious rumors abound, and they want to force the pastor to marry a horrible gossip. Besides not wanting an arranged marriage, the pastor has already lost his heart to another.
Can anything good come out of all this trouble, and will true love win out in the end, even though it does not look like it can.
Sometimes quirky, but always entertaining, discover the different situations a minister can find himself in. Faith plays a part in each story. Fans of romance, and intriguing tales will enjoy this five-star book.
Thank you, Barbour Books, for providing Tickmenot with a book to review. Opinions are my own.
Four stories of women throughout the years past, who fell in love with a man of the cloth.
The Mountie's Rival by Angela K. Couch
Jonathan is excited to be starting a new life apart from the shadow of his twin brother, but things don't exactly go to plan.
He finds a friend in an unexpected source in the daughter of the town drunk. April is a strong Christian, used to being looked down on because of her family, she does her best help the people of the town without them knowing.
This was a charming romance, with captivating main characters and strong faith. I liked how Jonathan and April found each other, and found someone who saw their true selves.
Convincing the Circuit Preacher by Carolyn Miller
It's love at first sight for Dorothea Maclean when she sets eyes on the local circuit preacher. She just has convince him--and her family.
A sweet romance, set in Australia with a class difference relationship. I liked how supportive her sister was of her and Mr. Hammill. And I liked how she matures and grows into the role of a supportive spouse of a man of the cloth.
The Angel and the Sky Pilot by Naomi Musch
Everett is determined to make the most of his second chance, serving as a clergy man to the rough and tumble men of the logging camp. He catches the eyes of the trader's daughter, but finds that he has some competition as women are few and far between in this male dominated territory.
A well written read with good relationship building and themes of faith, I liked how Angeline and her father also grow closer too. I liked the setting of the logging camp, and how Angel and Sky Pilot bond through questions about faith. Great interaction, highly enjoyable.
Mail Order Minister by Kari Trumbo
A small town church is looking for a new pastor, but so is the other church in town. Olive's parents have matchmaking on their mind, but she isn't so sure.
A cute small town, prairie romance with strong faith. I like dhow Olive and Finch become friends, and how they get to know each other throughout the story. A cute rea with, great characters.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I had an ARC for this book, but this is my voluntary and honest opinion of each of the four stories in this book. The Mountie’s Rival - Angela K Couch Jonathan is the new pastor of the local church. April is the daughter of the town drunk but she knows everyone in town and who is in need, and tries to see each is helped in some way. Jonathan falls for her, but thinks his brother David is interested in her. An interesting and touching story about love, kindness, and keeping God’s ways. Convincing the Circuit Preacher – Carolyn Miller Jonas Hamill is a circuit preacher, but fills in for several weeks in one place where he meets the Mcclean family. Oldest daughter Dorothea finds him attractive and he seems to be interested in her. She is the first one he has been interested in since his wife and child died in a fire, but there are several things against their union. A unique and interesting story about love, others opinions, and prejudices. The Angel and the Sky Pilot – Naomi Musch Everett Shepherd is called to take God to the lumber camps in the northwest. He is a former lumberjack himself, but has to prove himself before the men will listen to him. On the way he meets Angeline Adiar who lives with her father who has a store near the camps. She is interested in learning more about God and the Bible because her mother was a believer. The two find they love each other and plan to marry. This is an uplifting story about overcoming odds, earning trust, and sharing God’s love. Mail Order Minister – Kari Trumbo Finch Parsley is the new pastor at a church that split in two. The daughter of the remaining elder, Olive Torey is charged with introducing him to the townspeople. She ends up helping to prepare the church for use by cleaning and painting it, and they become friends in the process. When the other church loses the pastor who was coming, they approach Finch with an offer to also be their pastor, but he must marry a certain woman from that church. He isn’t interested in her, and she is in love with another man. The problem must be solved. This is an interesting and touching book about relationships, courting, and solving problems in life.
I enjoyed this collections of novellas. Each of was very unique and entertaining. I received a complimentary copy from the publisher and these are my voluntary and honest opinions. I was not required to leave a positive review.
The Mountie’s Rival
In this endearing story, twin brothers, David and Jonathan, and a young woman, April, struggle with feeling “good enough” in life. They always compare themselves to each other or look at themselves through someone else’s eyes. But they learn they are enough because God values each one; we are all His “one lost sheep” that He is seeking to come home. This was a new author to me; her style is very easy to read and the plot flows very well. I enjoyed it very much.
Convincing the Circuit Preacher
Thea and Jonas both learn that God works all things for their good, even the bad and hard times. Anger and misunderstanding of others block their path to the future, but trusting God with their whole life will blast the way clear. This was a new author to me, but I found her writing was very interesting and engaging. I could feel the turmoil and the joy that her characters faced throughout the story.
The Angel and the Sky Pilot
Everett’s story vividly conveys how God can completely change a man’s life from darkness and wrong to truth and light. Everett’s understanding of the lumberjack lifestyle enabled him to reach the men and gain their respect. Angel’s searching for truth brought out more of his compassionate side. Their story was very gentle and tender as they learn to trust God. This was again a new author to me. She gave much scripture within the story, and I could feel Everett’s desire to reach the men and do what is right. It was a very well-written story.
Mail-order Minister
Finch and Olive both learn to have faith in God for their future and to let their feelings for the other be known. God changes hearts when the path is His will. Their journey is a little rocky in places, but things work out for their good. This was a sweet story, clean and wholesome.
Since this book is a collection of four novellas by four different authors, it’s a bit tricky to rate, but I’ll do my best.
The Mountie’s Rival by Angela K Couch was enjoyable and featured a humorous “meet cute.” Filled with flawed and believable characters, the story held my attention. The conflict between the brothers and April’s relationship with her father kept me guessing as to how everything would be resolved. I rate this story 3.5 stars.
Convincing the Circuit Preacher by Carolyn Miller was my least favorite of the four stories. I’ve read this author’s work before and enjoyed it, but I just couldn’t connect with the characters (with one exception) in this story. I felt that the plot was a bit disjointed, the conversation was stilted at times, and that the research included wasn’t well integrated into the plot. I did, however, thoroughly enjoy the antics and wit of Eliza – she was a delight! I’m sorry to say, though, that I rate this story 2.5 stars.
The Angel and the Sky Pilot by Naomi Musch was my favorite of the four novellas. The character development was good, especially for a novella. I enjoyed the romance between Everett and Angeline, and learning about the life of the workers in a lumber camp, as well as at the trading station. The faith content was very well done. My rating is 3.75, but since that’s not a valid rating I’ll give it 4 stars.
Mail Order Minister by Kari Trumbo was enjoyable, but I found the plot to be weak. I didn’t understand the intense animosity and gossip rampant within the two congregations and townsfolk. The decisions that Finch had to make toward the end of the story seemed implausible. My rating is 3 stars.
I received an advance reader copy of this book from Net Galley. A positive review was not required and the opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. I hope additional editing was completed before publication.
-book description on Goodreads/Amazon
I really enjoy these anthology books because I usually discover some great stories along with new-to-me authors. Of course, it also feeds my hopeless romantic heart as well as my soul with the faith thread through each story. My favorite thing about all these is that the man (a preacher is this case) is the one who needs a wife instead of the other way around. It’s so fun to read about! Each story has obstacles for the hero & heroine to overcome through faith & love to develop into the happily-ever-after I look forward to in the end.
While I enjoyed all these equally well, I think if I were to pick one that stood out to me, it would be Kari Trumbo’s ‘Mail- order Minister’. Those are my all-time favorite troupes…again, a mail-order groom instead of bride! I loved seeing Reverend Finch Presley overcoming the heartache in his last serious love interest, to finding his way in the congregation God placed him into, to finally opening his heart to love Olive Torey. Such a sweet & satisfying ending to a great set of books!
If you’re looking for something different, look no further than Courting the Country Preacher and enjoy the ride!
*I received a complimentary copy from Barbour Publishing and wasn’t obligated to leave a favorable review. All opinions are my own *
I enjoyed these 4 novellas! The romances were sweet, faith-filled historicals.
Angela K Couch's Canadian romance, "The Mountie's Rival", was my first read by this author. I enjoyed seeing April and Jonathan's friendship grow, even with the difficulties in their lives (especially April's troubles). Their familial issues fed my sympathy and I appreciated how things turned out in the end.
Carolyn Miller's Australian romance, "Convincing the Circuit Preacher" was a wonderful read, especially since I'm an Aussie and appreciate local history being weaved into a story. Thea and Jonas shared some faith-building conversations, and I enjoyed seeing their romance bloom.
Naomi Musch's wintry romance "The Angel and the Sky Pilot", was a fascinating read as a first-time reader of this author. Angeline and Everett's story with the woodsmen of Northern Minnesota kept me captivated. There were great biblical truths weaved into this faith-filled romance, as well as great characters (some to love, others... not so much) and a realistic representation of what life might've been like in 1905.
Kari Trumbo's country USA romance, "Mail-Order Minister", dealt with the tricky situation of what might happen after a church split. Olive and Finch navigated fractured friendships, prejudices and quarrels on their journey to reunite the town, so their relationship was a joy to see unfold.
This is a collection of 4 Christian romance novels set at different times and in different countries. They're general sweet romances, where both preacher and future wife like and admire each other from the start, but something stands in their way that needs to be resolved before they can get together. One gal is the daughter of the town's main drunk and criminal and tries to counter being tarred with the same brush by being a quietly caring, hardworking Christian woman. Another gal is one of the few single women in the area and has several admirers, so the preacher has to figure out how to win the respect of the lumberjacks while handling her unwanted suitor's attempts to run him off.
The main characters were complex and likable, though some of the characters in Trumbo's story didn't quite come across as realistic. The romantic pair supported and built each other up. Three of the historical settings were based on real places or situations, giving a nice feel for the place and time. Each story had a Christian message about dealing with others. There was no sex or bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this romance collection.
I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.
As a devoted fan of Christian romance and stories set in the 1900s, "Courting the Country Preacher" is a delightful anthology that beautifully combines both passions. Each novella brings to life the challenges and joys faced by women navigating love and faith in a time of societal change.
The collaboration among these talented authors shines through, with each story offering a unique perspective on romance, community, and devotion. The richly drawn characters and their heartfelt journeys tugged at my heartstrings, making me root for their happiness.
I particularly loved how the authors intertwined faith with everyday life, showcasing the importance of trust in God amidst romantic pursuits. The historical settings were vividly depicted, transporting me to a simpler time filled with charm and hope.
Overall, "Courting the Country Preacher" is a wonderful addition to the Christian romance genre, perfect for anyone who shares my love for faith-filled stories set in the past!
Thank you to NetGalley for a copy of this ARC in return for my honest review.
What a delightful set of stories! These four authors put together a collection of stories about country preachers and it is a joy to read. Each of the four short stories is set in a different place and slightly different time (between 1863 and 1907). From the small town to the lumber camps, the stories are wildly different from each other and such fun to read. From a “mail order preacher” to one trying to live in a way that his rough and ready past won’t follow him, each story shows the human side of preachers and their simple desire to live for God, teaching others His Word. Each of these preachers starts out single, but as the title sort of gives away, we get to read the story of their courting. Each is quite different but so enjoyable. There is no bad language, no situations you might feel you have to skip over. Just simple romance stories befitting such a title. I don’t know if I had read any of these authors except Carolyn Miller prior but I was not disappointed. All four authors write beautiful stories that are more than worth your time.
Very sweet collection of novellas about preachers finding their match. I liked the diverse settings in each novella. One was set in Canada, another Australia, one in northern Minnesota and the last in South Dakota. Each novella had the right length, amount of angst and a sweet romance.
Every time I pick up one of these novella collections by Barbour I'm always happy with the story quality and writing. In this one, the four authors do a fantastic job with the stories and though the stories aren't connected by characters, they all are connected by the men being preachers. The stories being drastically different doesn't take away from the book at all. It's nice for the reader to be able to read part of it, go to something else and then come back. That's what makes novellas like this one an excellent addition to my home library.
Thank you to Barbour Publishing for the opportunity to read an ARC of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
Story 1, The Mountie's Rival by Angela K Couch: Jonathan Burton is assigned to his first church only to learn his Mountie twin brother and rival has been assigned to the same town! When a drunk breaks up Jonathan's first church service, Jonathan does not realize he is the father of the attractive young woman who cleans the parsonage and does his laundry. Some members of the congregation look down on April while parading their daughters in front of the parson but Jonathan soon learns the kindness that lives in April's heart. Story 2, Convincing the Circuit Preacher by Carolyn Miller: Dorothea Maclean is first attracted to the young minister's looks but then then to his message. She definitely has his attention when her younger sister brings a baby possum to church! Dorothea's wealthy parents have higher expectations for a future son-in-law than a minister! You will enjoy this humorous story. Story 3, The Angel and the Sky Pilot by Naomi Musch: Everett feels God has called him to minister in a lumber camp although he doesn't feel qualified. Everett has to prove himself before many of the men will listen to him. He has an easier time proving himself to the daughter of the local trading post owner! Story 4, Mail Order Minister by Kari Trumbo: Elders in a small church in South Dakota contact a potential pastor who they feel would make the best husband for their daughter causing all kinds of problems. God works things out better than anyone could have expected. I received a complimentary e-book of Courting the Country Preacher through Net Galley. This is my honest opinion.
This book includes 4 historical stories of preachers finding their wife. They all were enjoyable, but I preferred the ones that were set in North America better than the one that was in Australia. They each had different storylines and settings that made it a great collection to have together. You didn't feel like you were reading the same story with minor changes. I think my favorite one was the lumberjack preacher...The Angel and the Sky Pilot by Naomi Musch. It was something I hadn't really thought of before that a preacher would take on! Overall, I recommend picking up this collection of clean inspirational stories! I received and advance copy from NetGalley. That in no way influenced my review.
🍪Characters and Details : The characters in these collection of stories utterly had my heart! Angela, Carolyn, Naomi, and Kari have such a gift for weaving tales of true love from the past! The characters are built of faith, perseverance, and an abundance of love! The characters definitely get through a lot of challenges with love being their goal.
🍨Extra Compliments: I really admired all the men in the stories! They all brought their own personalities that mixed well in the story! I felt as if I had multiple ice cream sundaes in front of me! And they all melted perfectly! The descriptions of the time periods made me feel as if I was watching a film! A film I can watch over and over!
The collection of stories was great! I loved reading each of them and getting to know each preacher and his journey to where God had led him. I also enjoyed the paths each one took to find their bride, as it seems to be understood that all preachers need a wife:) I also enjoyed reading about each woman God placed in each preacher's path. I would be hard-pressed to pick a favorite as each author did an excellent job with each story and I wanted to keep reading to find out how each person in the story allowed their faith to guide their path even through unexpected twists and turns. I highly recommend this book!!
Thanks to Net Galley and Barbour for the reader's galley in return for an honest review of this book.
Courting the Country Preacher is a collection of novellas written by four authors, with settings in the late 1800s and early 1900s, each in a small town of a different country. With engaging storytelling each of the authors has given readers a delightful historical romance with characters who are realistic and relatable. Readers who love to read charming love stories of couples overcoming difficulties will not want to miss this collection. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I was given a complimentary copy of the book through NetGalley and was not required to write a positive review. The opinions are my own.
Four stories of sweet romance involving a Preacher. These stories take place back in horse and buggy times, but all became page turners as you wondered how things could possibly work out.
We have four different authors and four completely different locations. As I was reading and wanting to know the ending, I really didn't want to leave, wanting to stay involved in the lives of the people I now cared about!
These are novelas, each taking a quarter of the book, but when you finish one, I was ready to read another, they are very good!
I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Barbour, and was not required to give a positive review.
These are clean, Christian historical stories. There are four stories in the book.
I really enjoyed the characters and how they interacted and faced adversity. I liked that there were different areas: Canada, Australia, and USA (Minnesota and South Dakota). Each of the preachers are new to the profession and are trying to make sure they do things the right way. They consult God in their decisions. I appreciated the fact that they are clean stories, but also show that not everything is positive. They can make with prayer.
Be ready to sit down and read. You won’t want to put it down.
I received a copy from NetGalley and am leaving an honest review.
I loved the variety of stories within this collection. While they each followed a preacher and the stirring of love, they were based in different places (and a couple in different countries) and offered a different perspective of love, God's calling, and forgiveness.
I will admit I wasn't expecting a story set in Canada, much less one set in Australia, but it was nice to have stories set in places beyond the U.S. I would be more than willing to read more stories based in any of the authors' places as I feel there would be plenty to tell. Highly recommended and the stories were just long enough without dragging on or feeling rushed.
