Each person inherits an ancient genetic code from their biological parents. Unfortunately, not all humans are created equal. For some humans like Karis Kenzie the lottery of genes give some people exceptional powers. Karis and her best friend, Kaleb Wood, must survive a life altering event which will take them on a roller coaster ride of emotions including trust, romance, and extensive training in order to rescue her family.
The summary lays out the book pretty well, so I won't go into that much detail regarding the story. However, be aware this story ends with a major cliffhanger and I have no idea when the next book will be out. Kelly, the author, does a good job developing her characters (even if the feelings of "liking someone" came about a little too soon in some cases-IMO). I remember being a teenager and having crushes, but not that fast or deep. Regardless, the story is interesting and the dialogue is good. I really liked Kaleb and his loyalty to Karis.
There were numerous typos and grammatical errors; which for some people are a big deal and not for others. For me, it pulls me out of a story faster than you can blink. Fortunately, the story was interesting enough that I wanted to keep reading and see if my guesses as to Karis's power were correct as well as the other suspicions I had developed. Sure enough, they were. I think that anyone who reads paranormal books or any type of suspense books will easily guess exactly what is going on. Since so many authors use the exact same technique for the "big betrayal" or "big shocker" it's now no longer a surprise. However, Kelly, still manages to put her own twist on it which I did appreciate.
I think Kelly has the potential to write some very good books. I believe this is her debut novel. I think with a proofreader or editor she will tighten up her stories and really pull her readers into her world. As for me, while I found the book to be a quick read I don't know if I will continue with the series or not. I read so many books a day that a book really has to jump out and grab me. This was IMO a 3 star book for me in regards to grabbing my interest, but that's just my personal preference. Which is why I gave it 4 stars, I think other readers will find it to be an enjoyable read.
Karis was one of the humans who inherited an ancient genetic code from their biological parents on her sixteenth birthday. however, not all humans inherited one of these four powers - sight, force, strength, and maker skills. eager to get rid of her boring life, Karis looked forward to her birthday, waiting for the change that will transform her life. still days from turning sixteen, Karis found her house ambushed by two animal looking humans. Kaleb, her best friend saved her and they were sent off to a special school attended by students with powers, where they would be safer than living among the humans. soon Karis found out that her father had been working on a project to enhance their powers and there were people who wanted to get their hands on it.
i received a free e-book from the author in exchanged for a review. the book started off being a very smooth read. well, until Kaleb started to annoy me with his handsome, ladies' man front. although things got better following Titanium's appearance, it went downhill immediately when Karis fell for both guys like some typical teenage girl. since then, she had gone off my favorite character list. despite that little flaw, i found myself captivated throughout the book. from the escape, to the learning, it was actually fun to see how the duo grew. it was a pity that the truly delicious part that involved Karis finally using some powers was only available for the last 20 percent of the book. but hopefully that signifies a promising second installment!
Note: I received a copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.
I can’t give this book more than two stars in good conscience. If it weren’t for the interesting story line, I would’ve given it one star.
When I read the synopsis, I was very eager to read this book. YA, paranormal, and super powers – it’s exactly what I go for. But after reading the first page, I nearly abandoned the book all together. Grammar issues do really bother me, but it was more than that. I think what bothered me the most was being told something in the narration, then hearing the characters talk about it ad nauseam, especially minor details that don’t matter. The length was entirely too long for what actually happened, due to over-narration and over-wordy dialogue that, as others pointed out, sounds unnatural. The main character, Karis, is not likeable. She is a classic victim, and she doesn’t seem to progress at all by the end of the novel.
In its current configuration, I can’t recommend this book. After a line by line edit, a careful review of the dialogue by actually speaking the written words, and consideration for character development and motives, I might change my mind. This book has potential – I loved the powers and the school, but what I read feels more like a rough draft than a completed novel.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review (Lovers of Paranormal)
I would give this 3.5 stars.
I really enjoyed the story and the concept. It felt very fresh and a new take on paranormal fantasy.
The author was quick to take you into the action. It was fast paced, but in a good way. I devoured it pretty quickly, and there were points where I just couldn't put it down. However, there were points in the story where elements were rushed and certain points not explained as well as they perhaps could have been.
It took me a while to like Karis, I felt she was particularly whiny at times. Her relationship with Kaleb felt forced to begin with, however by the end I enjoyed watching them progress and actually came to like her more because of this.
The thing that I felt let the book down was the writing itself. Unfortunately, I found the writing style very clumsy at times. It didn't flow as well as other books I have previously read in this genre. If the writing was polished up, which a good editor could do, I would definitely rate this 4.5 stars.
I would very much like to read the next in the series to see how the story unfolds.
I received a copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review so here we go....
Wishful Deviltry is a young adult paranormal book. I generally like to read paranormal books. I always find them exciting. This book is right up my alley.
The book has dynamic characters, that you can sometimes relate to. And want to make you read more about what is happening to them. I think that the relationships between karis, kaleb and titanium took a huge place in this book. Which is ok ,who doesn’t love a bit of romance, but sometimes it took a little bit the cliché route. But I don’t mind.
Anyway the book end with a cliffhanger, I just love that. But now I have the problem that I want to know what is going to happen further.
So for my general conclusion: ‘ Wishfull Deviltry’ is a book that you should definitely read when you are a YA reader. This book has it all the romance the action. You should put it on your to read list!
I received this book for a review. I thought this book had a good plot and I loved how the characters were unique, different and not all from the same age and group. It was a great fantasy book to read and easy to follow.
Very good Teen Paranormal book. I enjoyed each characters personalities. Loved that there were different cultured characters, it made the personalities different and not boring. Very good read.
